Therefore, when at the end of episode 16, holding her hand and looking deep down in her eyes, he said “thank you” to her, this was the green sign that JA was waiting for. That “thank you” with everything that came together: smile, eyes expression, holding hands with that intensity (with no sign of repression in his body), doesn’t wanting to let go of her hand – means his confession, his “now, I can go to you” answer. To DH, being thankful to JA is an essential part of his love for her. So, DH saying “thank you” to JA means a confession.

JA understood his last “thank you” clearly and hopefully.

I agree so much with this:wub:

Saw this post today and I just thought, you don’t know what you’re missing!:lol:

40 min. doesn’t even begin to cover anything yet

@sadiesmith I was trying to post a screen cap of a tweet I saw on Twitter about MA. Obviously did not work copy pasting the photo. Lol. Here’s the text anyway:

Bro My Mister is so boring. Sheesh just wasted 40 minutes of my life till I had to call it quits lol. About to watch Tunnel or some anime idk

Im in no way criticising her opinion, just feel sorry that she’s gonna have to miss this gem of a show.

I tried to move on from this drama and forced myself to watch what’s wrong .. secretary kim. I fast forwarded 2 episodes in one hr. throughly unsatisfied I watched one of the initial episode of my mister just to watch dong goon eager eyes always trying to catch a glimpse of jian.

i don’t  think my heart is ready to move on from this drama yet . I might be in happy sad Melo kind of phase bc of this drama and anything fluffy is making me cringe.

Any suggestion for happy Melo drama which make ur heart happy sad at the same time ?

I tried watching it too... but ended up rewatching My Mister instead. I guess Im still looking for a continuation of the feelings/emotions from MM. Id love to watch Come and Hug me when it’s almost finished airing.

    Anyways, a few suggestions:

Go Back Couple (Gwang Il or JangKiyong is there too. I loved this drama. Its only 12 episodes but each ep. is pact full of emotions. There’s laughter, fun, friendship, tears and lessons. LOVE this.

Just Between Lovers This is another melodrama that I loved. This one is more focused on romance so you definitely won’t have lingering feelings on that side of the story unlike in MM lol (although the ending of My Mister, after rewatching a lot of times and following this forum, I can now see that its the best ending for them - a beginning of something more). This too is very sad and the lead actors acted so beautifully. It really helps a lot when the actors are able to act out their roles and give the right emotion at the right timing. It might sound like a given in all kinds of dramas but I feel like it is even more so in melodramas. The story relies so much on how the actors portray their roles brcause it’s so emotion driven.

That’s all I have melodrama wise that gives off similar feelings as MM. It’s definitely hard to move on lol. I really hope they get to work again in the future and be able to act out their chemistry again without so much criticism from other people. Almost a month on and I thought we’ve exhausted all opinions and thoughts about this drama. But its lovely to still see insights and new observations every day.

Hahaha... What is his secret?  Can he share that with LSK so LSK can stay younger looking for a good while before casting directors give up on giving him romantic roles completely?  I think it's already happening.   Boo... :bawling:

Another great thing this drama did was introducing us to lesser known, older, talented actors like Oh Na Ra, Kim Young Min, and Song Sae Byeok.

I feel like LSK was perfect for his role the way he is, he perfectly embodied DH, from looks and all! And with so many people converted in to shipping JA and DH during and after the show, it’s just a testament of how well he was able to hold himself up. He probably isn’t what others would call “as goodlooking as others” but that’s what actually adds to his charisma.

Ok I am rewatching the episodes and saw that in the beginning of ep 14 , the slipper that lj gave had black band. By end , when he became the director the slipper that he wore in his office had brown band. Are they supposed to be the same one that jian gave ? Am inseeing things ??

I know if he is actually wearing the slipper given by jian than that itself means a huge confession !! Can anybody help clear my doubt ... I am shipper and this one scenes is suppose to keep the ship afloat !!!

They weren’t black they were the brown ones. If you have a look again you’ll see it. It’s more like the lighting was weird.

I actually feel that Dong Hoon's confession was deeper and more heartfelt than Ji An's, even though she was more direct.

    What DH said:

I feel what you feel. If you hurt because of me, my heart hurts so much

When you know (love) someone, whatever he does doesn't matter. And I know you.

And all the other longing looks, shy glances, and passionate outbursts...

    What JA said:

    I like you

Do you even understand what it means to like someone?

I don't want to be a fool hanging aorund here looking for you

What DH is indirectly saying : When you breath I breath, when you are happy I am happy, what you feel I feel too. You are inside me, the other half of me.

What Ji An says: I like you. To me, that means she cares for him, is fond of him, and wants to stay by his side.

Like I said earlier though, the turning point for me was the slippers.

@ccl82 what instagram account did you contact? I haven't messaged them yet but will do so later!

I have a couple of really cool things to share from DC Inside, here's the first:

Why are you going so far?

    http://gall.dcinside.com/board/view/?id=mymister&no=54512&page=1

"This for me was Dong Hoon's confession. What he's really saying: why are you going so far = Don't go so far = stay near me"

Really loved this one as well from DC Inside, but I can't figure out how to copy and paste the gifs:

    http://gall.dcinside.com/board/view/?id=mymister&no=54517&page=3

    Flustered Dong Hoon

    Shy Dong Hoon

    Embarassed Dong Hoon

He has the one same reaction: he can't bring himself to meet her eyes...

Just wanted to highlight sentences that really spoke to me. Im not very good at highlighting more than one though. Anyways, thanks everyone for the insights ( @justamom @fauna). I know Jian really like DH. There’s love between them, that’s definite. Although sometimes you just need affirmation and confirmation that others are thinking the same thing you are thinking. Gosh this drama!!

Referring from Oh Nara’s interview, such a shame how that controversy affected them but maybe in the end it also helped them work harder. As she said, they had to prove the story isn’t what others think it is. If they hadn’t had the controversy before, there probably wouldn’t be this driving force for them to do more and execute in each scene emotions so palpable. In the end, what others were trying to undermine, they put a good light on it instead and that’s part of what made the drama what it is.

As for Jiseok boarding school abroad, youd be surprised that it’s actually quite a common thing. I have a friend that did the same thing. She came here in middle school so I was quite surprised that such thing actually exists. I mean, they’re so young! But it does happen.

I feel like this is becoming such a lengthy post but hey, there’s so many things to unravel in this drama.

IU’s Dear Moon. It was one of the least favourite soundtrack for me personally (though I really loved it when it was played showing JiAn’s grandma watching the moon). After finding out about the lyrics however, I fell in love with what it’s saying. I definitely think that it speaks about DH too as much as it speaks about Grandma’s love for the moon in a literal level. The imagery IU used, it just tugs at your heart whenever you think of the drama.

One of my favourite parts of the dramas (Ive got loads), is when she told Yoon Hee she’s envious of her. Not jealous, but envious. I mean that spoke volumes. It was like she was trying to say so much in that one sentence. It’s like saying, I wish I was in your place instead.

  8. What do you guys think about Ji-An liking DH? She’s said it a lot in the show, others even said it - Joon Young, Jung Hee, Yoon Hee. Do you think she’s meant it in a platonic way? Like just genuinely liking a person for who they are.

Although by the end, I think JA’s feelings developed romantically - seeing the way he was looking at DH. Ive just thought about this because of a recent comment Ive seen in dramabeans. @justamom Id love your opinion :).

Im really enjoying these translations so please keep them coming. Two weeks on and it seems Im still not over this drama.

I thought the first essay, on love, was so beautifully written.

Here's my attempt at translating it:

We fall in love because of our flaws. When I know your flaws, and you know mine, and what we know becomes connected, your flaws become my pain and mine become yours, it becomes an invaluable, precious love between two people. The kind of love that will never, ever end and can never be severed. That is Dong Hoon and Ji An's love. This love will most naturally lead one to desire contact with the other person's body. But this is very different from normal sexual desires. Yes, normal people desire physical contact for various reasons. But why is it not so easy for us to agree to physical contact with the one we love?

If we look at Dong Hoon's misconception of love, he seems to think that his love for Ji An stems from how she helps him overcomes his shortcomings. Ji An, to him, is the only person who can make up for his shortcomings and understand his suffering. Dong Hoon plays the same role for Ji An, but more than helping her overcome her shortcomings, the one who brings personal strength to overcome herself is Ji An. And that makes Dong Hoon eternally grateful towards her. When Dong Hoon extends his hand to her at the end and holds her hand tightly, that could very well be the first time that he faces Ji An and her flaws and exposes his vulnerability to her. Rather than saying it is for Ji An, it is a reflex action stemming from his own hunger (desire). And in Ji An's expression while holding his hand we seem to see a shy smile evading that desire.

Undeniably, both have come to stand up on their own. Undeniably, both have also come back to each other, never to part again. Will they get married? That's unknown. Is marriage the greatest expression of love?

@rellea not sure I understood everything correctly especially in the 2nd para so please do correct if I made any mistakes!

Please keep translating these. It’s nice to know their perspective are similar to ours. Im hoping the MA cast will do a special episode:tongue:

I only included the meat of this post. It's a long one based on the background lines in the offices during the first and last episodes. I noticed that some subtitles for these scenes weren't accurate.

Not everyone might agree with this post, but I thought it was interesting enough to post anyway.

    Here goes:

The first episode opens to a bustling office scene. A female employee has a phone tucked under her chin while she arranges some documents and gives her lines. "In this case, I don't think that the....(?) Yes, concrete will not be strong enough (the strength of concrete is not sufficient). I think we will have to look for a different method of reinforcement."

<We will have to look for a different method of reinforcement>

While this line is said, the scene changes to Jian watering the plants. Could her act of giving water to the plants have meaning as well?

Several more scenes showing Jian are shown while male employees speak jargon about concrete and strength and so on in the background. We then see Donghoon working hard at his desk accompanied by this line:

"Well what can we do... We have to reinforce it... It's a new building... We have to reinforce it."

The line <We have to reinforce it> is repeated several times while Donghoon and Jian are shown in one screen and then alternatively.

If we were to analyze this, Donhoon's and Jian's present situations are like buildings with concrete of insufficient strength and thus dangerous. Everything about their lives needs a method of reinforcement. And I believe that the scenes and lines imply that is each other. To give each other the strength for a new life.

And in the last episode, episode 16.

Donghoon has started a new company with his employees when a phone call comes. Donghoon walks over to pick up the phone and says something along the lines of the following: "Yes. Yes. I've checked it. Ah, but when considering emergency situations, in order to evacuate 4,000 people in 20 minutes, you will need one more stairway. Yes. If we go by the current design, there would not be enough time to evacuate in emergencies." And then we see LJA's brightened and sophisticated figure.

Donghoon certainly appears much brighter. However, the lines <need one more stairway>, <if we go by the current design there is not enough time to evacuate>. In the end, Donghoon, in his current, stably designed condition, still needs some kind of emergency exit to escape the tightness/harshness of life. That is LJA.

My conclusion from the above lines is "Donghoon's exit is Jian."

Could I have gone too far? They say that Won Suk PD never puts any fluff in his works (ie everything has meaning!). I'm certain that there is meaning even in the seemingly ordinary scenes and lines.

The poster updated with clarification since people were confused by the wording of "exit":

My thoughts are such: there is an already designed/constructed building, but it needs a stairway for emergency situations. Similarly, when the now comfortable and stable Donghoon comes across emergency situations in the future, he will need his own stairway. That is Jian.

So my conclusion is that in the long life ahead of him, the one passage that will let Donghoon breathe is Jian.

I wonder if it ever occurred to those who complain about the age gap that there is a purpose to that. It was never intended to pander to the sexual fantasies of middle-aged men.  It was put there because it will make Park Dong Hoon’s moral dilemma about his relationship with Ji An all the more acute and his inner conflict all the more intense. He’s a morally upright man.  I’m sure when he first started helping out Ji An, he thought he was merely being kind to a girl who was little more than a child in age as far as he’s concerned.  The last thing he probably expected was to realize that Ji An was not a child but a woman.  And that she saw him as a man.  And that he would feel such a deep connection to her that she would matter so much to him, almost beyond rhyme or reason.  That probably  drove him up the wall, so to speak.

Yet throughout the drama, we can see how steadfast and determined he was to keep a certain distance between them.  You will never see him take advantage of Ji An, even avoiding any physical contact, regardless if the situation calls for it. Take for example how he ran away from her after they brought her grandmother to the living facility and how he made sure to sit somewhere where she won’t have any space to sit near him.  Then when she was crying at the morgue when her grandmother died, he took care to just hold her upper arms to help her up but he still made sure to hold her away from him. And when he finally found her in that shed at the dump, she was so broken and yet he never held herto comfort her, not even a mere touch of the hand.  He just watched her as she cried. And he refused to hug her the first time she asked.  He only allowed it when he knew it would be the last time they would see each other. Even then, you could see how stiffly he held himself, indicating the level of control he was exercising then.

So I don’t see how some people think there’s something wrong with their age gap in this drama. Honestly.

EXACTLY!! I feel like thats all Ive been saying. I just really agree with a lot of the different insights everyone has provided. DH has really held himself and stood by it, until the time where theyve had to part. Also a reason why I was so looking forward to this drama when I first heard about it. The plot sounded good and different, I wanted to see how they were going to make it work.

Thats why it was also annoying when theyve decided to address controversies. I feel like that really has a chance to ruin the flow of a story. I remember My Introverted Boss, about two episodes in, there were people complaining about the lead female’s character. I liked the story but it just makes you wonder how it couldve gone had people not decided to complain about it otherwise. Their opinions, critics, really altered the story telling. Like, why not wait for the plot to develop first.

Exactly, so I think thats why it’s all the more amazing to see his character development. From how he was before, what he did for Jian esp. in the last episodes is a complete turnaround for his character. He was changed and stripped of the things that restrained him.

And so im more convinced that the writer/director trusted us the audience to pick up what they were trying to tell us by showing us instead.Quoting this one down - I think we’re not wrong to pick up from what theyve shown and told that there’s that possibility theyre together in the end. Although it has to be done in a very subtle manner, to pacify others. It feels like theyve put in tiny pieces of ‘crumbs’ here and there for us to follow and pick from the whole thing.

The audience knows the code, because the writer-PD taught it to them. You can refuse to see it if you need absolute confirmation via traditional visuals (kissing, etc), and/or don't want to believe in this romance, which is fine.

In ep 2 or 3, in the subway DH asked JA how she knew that he received a bribe. JA answered "how can I not know when we looked each other in the eyes." And how his body was stiffly covering his cabinet. Well, DH did look guilty even to me. But, JA's answer seem to establish early on that she can read him even if he doesnt speak. And he knows it. So taking that thought all the way to episode 16, even if he didnt say anything while holding her hand, maybe she read something in his eyes that prompted her to offer a meal and that encouraged her enough to even add that she'll call. :)

Yes she was definitely faltering at first when her colleagues called her. But after DH initiated the handshake, its as if she received confirmation and gained confidence to take a step forward. I loved the look in her eyes whilst looking at him. She was conveying so much with those eyes

@anipanch Great post! Like you said and some others said previously nothing was shown from which we can derive the conclusion that the couple reconciled. If anything, the gradual course of events only leads to their separation and dong hoon's new beginning. We can argue in our head about dong hoon's feelings fro Ji An, or where it will lead to, but I am quite sure about the fact that Yoon Hee and dong hoon are not going for a second start.

Also like so many of us have stressed on the fact, I can't think anyone else apart from Ji An making this much impact on dong hoon, so I can't imagine him being happy with someone else. Plus like we know there was never any temptation until now which would make him falter.

Ji An has already confessed verbally in front of dong hoon, JY, and Yoon Hee that she likes him. She even hissed at JY for ridiculing her love. So I don't think she would ever hesitate to go out with him.

I know it is frustrating that we never got to see how dong hoon felt for Ji An, but tbh he has been a married man for the whole course of the show, and also the writer[ even the actors] had to face the pressure from the Korean audience, so the writer deliberately kept his feelings more focused on expressions rather than saying things out loud. Most importantly I think dong hoon will rather have deep meaningful conversations with her than having an affair with a pretty model like lady lol. She is his soulmate and vice versa. Noone except her can evoke that much emotion in him so I don't think anyone else is an option here. They are supposed to stay together either married or not, but they will grow old in that neighborhood with the friends and family. So at this point I have no problem envisioning that he will be together with her in some distant future. I don't know. :S Maybe we are supposed to read between the lines and rely on their expressions rather than what they say.

      Reveal hidden contents

Do the songwriters decide on the songs based on the progression of the events? The lyrics of the last ost called Forest when dong hoon and Ji An are meeting is quite interesting and such a positive one too.

Maybe it’s hard to bear it.
    It may be too painful.

    Too much to cover
It’s time to cut the tree of pain now.

It will be a tree that sprouts will grow.
The wind blows and you can lean against it
    Heavy shoulder strapped down
I can not help it now.
    It’s not your fault.

    Maybe I’m afraid.
May the tree of pain grow again

It will be a tree that sprouts will grow.
The wind blows and you can lean against it
    Heavy shoulder strapped down
I can not help it now.
    It’s not your fault.

The trees will grow and become your forest.
The wind blows and you can run all the way
Heavy shoulder stools are left to throw
    Now you can just laugh.
    Yes, this is your forest.

I agree with you! Just looking at the last scene, there were long seconds where they just stood looking at each other. Their eyes were doing the talking.

  16. I would’ve also seen the end as the start of them two together but looking back at the earlier posts (the presscon, dealing with controversies). They firmly stated that it isnt romance (even LSK’s friend said that to defend him because of people bashing him). I rewatched the last two episodes - still not over it!!! I really tried to see it without the romance bit and watched it for “what it is” but there’s just some scenes that don’t make sense if all whatever’s between them is just a platonic relationship. Especially with the way Jian looked at DH at the ending with so much longing and DH getting all excited. And ofcourse no need to mention that ‘handshake’. Im so conflicted! Haha. But whether or not they subtly meant for the ending to show that theyll be together romantically or not, it still doesn’t take away the fact that MA is an amazing story. It’s still a love story between Jian and DH, regardless of what kind of love that is. I wouldn’t call it fatherly love though, seeing that handshake and the way he was so giddy at the end.

I feel like people can’t really say he is fatherly towards her, non-shippers included. It’s lovely rewatching it again, catchig on things that youd have missed thhe first time. It also makes you wonder if how you understood each scenes at first is how theyre actually meant to be understood.

And to follow up on the traffic lights, when Jian was shown walking up to Saman building, you can notice how the orange light went on a lot longer than it should. And also there was a car driving down her direction but at the next second, you could see a different car driving up the opposite direction of the road. I think this was deliberate

  17. And I’ll add, didn’t anyone notice how hard DH was grasping at Jian’s hand? He only let go when Jian offered to buy him a meal and that she’ll call him. He was holding on and seemed hesitant to let go before Jian said anything. It did seem like he was just waiting for something to confirm that that won’t be their last meeting and then he was able to let her off. All these subtle details.

  18. Wahhh Im missing this drama already!!! Definitely will rewatch it again. Ive been rewatching the last scene over and over then mu sister happened to glance at my phone. She then asked me “They end up together?”  And all because she’s seen DH smiling so wide at Jian!! All my doubts, vanished . Ive been bugging her to watch the drama so it’s nice to have someone not associated to it say the same thoughts you have. It just confirms it and I did ask her again if thats really what she thought, she said yes so Im happy!!!

It’s not just us who can see it haha
