  1. Ive finally finished a drama! I completed Queen In Hyun’s Man last night and it was such a cute, at times heart breaking story. It is a time travel saeguk drama so completely different to MA but just what I needed. On a side note, I realise how cringy, cheesy some romantic scenes can be :sweatingbullets:. But I do recommend it. I think thats just what happens after watching MA. Im still not over it though!

  2. Ive just visited the fansite again, id like to make a suggestion about the next post, if I may. I remember seeing posts about DH wanting to be called ‘Manager’ instead of Ahjussi when they were walking together. Id love to read more insights about that. When I first saw that scene, I really didn’t know how I should feel or take that as. Would love to read others opinions about it :) Many thanks!

Have you seen 1 Liter of Tears yet? It really touched my heart. So far, it's my #1 J-drama.

I was going to recommend this too. I watched it about 8 years ago and rewatched it again a while back. It never fails to make me sad.

Since no one has done any traffic signals analysis, I've decided to pick it up again. Wish me luck!)

Didn’t we have a bunch of traffic signal analysis? Or you mean no one has done any after that?

Anyway, Im with you too in regards with dropping dramas. I tried watching but I am always waiting for a moment, something, that would hit me right in the feels like MA has done. My bad. They just feel a bit half hearted and the build up leading to a climax does not really satisfy... I felt like there were loads of potentially really good dramas (with very good and/or well known actors casted in) this year that just fell short of expectation. Just goes in to show that an actor alone cannot guarantee a good drama. Its the whole package and MA delivered so well:unsure:

and about the drama Mother, I tried watching it before but I found the pace sooo slow, it felt like they weren’t really getting into the story. So I dropped it at episode 8 I think. I really just couldn’t get myself to watch i:huh:. Such a shame as I was looking forward to it

Ah, finally happy with Dong Hoon's "single tear" GIF.

Visit the fan site for more upcoming GIFs (and awesome analyses). ;)

I miss Lee Seon Kyun on my screen. T_T Especially in a lighter role, like in Coffee Prince. Thinking of starting Pasta. LSK and GYJ are individually so gooood at having chemistry with their co-stars. I'm interested to see what magic they made happen together.

No worries, Park Dong Hoon and Lee Ji An are still my #1 OTP. *prays hard for a reunion project*

Oh my gosh that cinematography!!!! Soo goooodddddd. Ive been lurking at the fansite too, well done to everyone’s work there and thanks:wub:

I know people on the forum have expressed differing views and it’s mostly the “loveline folks” who can’t move on, but I have come to realize our different interpretations of My Ahjussi in many ways stem from the different ways we love and what love means to us.

I’ve come to a stage in life where I have a broad, generous view of love. Love is having someone in your heart, even if you’re not together and can never be together. Love is doing things for someone without thinking, including risking your life. Love doesn’t always have a happy ending. And love’s natural ending is not always marriage. Love is something you feel in your heart.

So I found it rather ridiculous and laughable, really, that this reviewer cited all these examples of Dong Hoon running to Ji An, risking his life for her, fighting for her....and calling them besties. She even said they need to be around each other forever...in what way is that not love??? In what world do you live in that this is not love???

Well atleast a lot of people here have the same thoughts about her conclusion of DH and JA’s relationship. I literally saw this review minutes after it was posted and was surprised at how loooong it was. I skimmed through it and was just interested about her thoughts in regards DH and JA’s relationship.

I felt dissatisfied. I was also a bit hesitant to share the review right away until I could digest it all. I guess what really bothers me about reviews that tend to be on the no loveline side, is the fact that they  seem to refuse to acknowledge the love there. DH and JA’s bond gets toned down to merely just being ‘friends’? who share the same pains with each other. And it really takes away from the feel you get from the drama. I do know she’s acknowledged them being soulmates buttttt thats not it

Honestly Ji An is such a cool character. I mean she's a natural born spy. The NSA would be lucky to have her.

James Bond who? Jason Bourne what? They got nothing on our girl.

Watching that fan made trailer just made me crave for a 10k au fic where Ji An is in some sort of law enforcement agency. An up and coming rookie who is talented but unable to make much headway into the closed off boys' club that is the Agency.

So she when she gets a particularly difficult case she has no choice but to team up with the even more reticent older agent Park Dong Hoon. A man from whom great things were expected but his safety first approach has stalled his professional life and left his personal life in shambles.

Dong Hoon can instantly recognize her natural talent but is baffled (and a little scared) of her reckless nature. But he has no choice other than teaming up with her to solve this case if he wants to keep his job.

The more they work together, the more they realize how similar they are. But will they be able to trust each other??

Stay tuned for the next episode of...

(Am I basically writing fanfiction now?? What has this show done to me!?)

Wow I could really see that in my mind  that was good!! Pleaseeee pleaseee pleaseeeeee let them work together on a drama again. They just have to :bawling:

Yes hopefully the posts you mentioned get translated @justamom. Would love to read them all and its fascinating that the korean audience hasn’t been able to move on yet like us.

How are you finding it? I tried watching it but it really just felt sooo cliche and boring. Seemed like a great cast but no substance on the plot. Ive read comments about it too so I think its a no go for me at the moment. The plot seems to be the usual trope too. Im trying to watch Oh Jak Doo at the moment but MA is so hard to move on from lol

  9. Wow thanks everyone :sweatingbullets: Whilst writing that, I was expecting a bit of a negative response but I knew I had to write it otherwise it wouldve kept bothering me. Feels reassuring that Im not the only one who saw it that way although everyone understood the meaning behind the actions.

The scene I meant of him looking that way was right before and after YH called. But then, trying to see it from their perspective,  it really sunk in that that last hug was really the last for them. No more walking home and talking with each other. As far as they’re concerned at that time, that was the end for them really. Watching it before, though I knew that theyll be separated I always knew they’ll meet again. Ofcourse they didn’t know that. And maybe that’s why DH had that resigned look on his face also. He had to go back and face his life the way it was and that reality was without JA.

  10. Thanks @justamom. I remember seeing these posts but totally didn’t relate gireogi to goose father *eyeroll*.

@sadiesmith I know right? Sad. I feel like inserting a gif of Jung Hee saying how she feels like her life is not moving forward when everyone else’s is. This withdrawal feeling just got worse for me instead of better. Lol. I keep swaying between the loveline no loveline side. Im making it hard for myself aren’t I? I guess Im being too stubborn welcoming the possibility that JA  and DH aren’t together in the end. And that DH does not feel any romantic feeling towards JA   .Im confusing myself. I can understand how it can be seen that way but then again havea nagging feeling that it’s not meant to be like that. The more I rewatch it the more I want there to be a solid conclusion in the end. Again, eyeroll.

Like now Im seeing how proud DH looked at JA when they met again. His sigh of relief when her colleagues called her over. Like in his mind he’s thinking that, “Yes, she’s doing okay.”  His handshake now symbolising he was ready to let go and would most peobably have had JA not invited him. His wide smile saying how proud was to see this change to JA.

After their goodbye hug, when he forcefully walked away, his face looked devoid of sadness. I know I know Im probably going to be told it’s just DH’s personality to hold back. But I just needed to say these.

BUT, you really cannot deny the longing in JA’s eyes. Consistent throughout.

Sorry for the long post. And I think it wouldn’t make sense to most lol

  11. I was watching clips of MA in Youtube randomly :sweatingbullets: then stumbled upon a comment. Clearly not on the love line side. But she/he said one interesting word though - gireogi. I googled it and saw the meaning in google as a husband who has a wife and child living in an english-speaking country while he works in SK.

The commenter said it was clearly mentioned, though didn’t say in which scene. Id like to ask @mymister31 if this was mentioned at all in MA? From the discussions about the divorce debate, I haven’t seen this word mentioned anywhere before. And if that was really said, does that justify the

pictures of YH and their son in DH’s work desk? Or again, that’s just a ploy used to let others think he’s a ‘gireogi appa’ when in actual fact theyre separated/divorced, to stop people from asking?

    Many thanks!

I took the mid screening press conference plus the toning down of the "romance" really hard. I was like a rubber band that had been pulled but not released. I had to find a way to release all that tension. I'm good now! I'm helping other poor souls in my WhatsApp group recover from marathoning the drama :D... so many midnight discussions as I drop some knowledge on them from the gems on this forum! lol!

    More on Episode 11

Ki Hoon has been antsy through out the episode because Yoo Ra has not responded to his texts, but from min 38, he descends to Antsy: Petty Level 3. He looks around the bar for an easy target for his anger. His brother Sang Hoon comes into view. Sang Hoon and the other Ahjussis are enjoying the rock snails treat from Jung Hee. Earlier in the day, Sang Hoon had spent time smiling into his phone instead of cleaning up their office. Ki Hoon rags on him about how sloppy he is at work....

Sang Hoon isn't having this! NO WAY! He tells Ki Hoon not to dump on him, and instead go to Yoo Ra instead of looking into his phone for her text messages etc....

      Reveal hidden contents

Ki Hoon is being his usual erratic and implusive angry self, especially because Sang Hoon is saying the truth. Sang Hoon even notices a tear forming in Ki Hoon's eyes and claims victory for making him cry. Ki Hoon stomps out for a smoke...

He (obviously) doesn't light it. Yoo Ra texts that she's home but heading straight to bed. Ki Hoon huffs and puffs and.... finally runs down the street. As he runs he tells himself, "Go. if you miss her, run over there!".  His ageing Ahjussi bones can't handle it and he hails a taxi.

Why I kept track of this erratic dude is because it had earlier been noted on this forum that Ki Hoon is like the ID (Sang Hoon the Super Ego and Dong Hoon the Ego). I watched his behaviour as an indicator of what Dong Hoon's subconsious REALLY wants to do, and of how DH will behave in later scenes.

      Reveal hidden contents

The ID is the impulsive and infantile and unconsious part of our psyche. It responds immediately to the instincts. it remains infantile and isn't affected by reality or logic. It operates on the pleasure principle. When the ID achieves its demands, we experience pleasure, when it is denied, we experience "unpleasure".

Sober Dong Hoon is the Ego. The Ego operates according to the reality principle, working out realistic ways of satisfying the ID's demands, often compromising or postponing satisfaction to avoid negative consequences of society. The Ego considers norms and social realities, ettiquette and rules in deciding how to behave. Often, the Ego is weak to the headstrong ID.

Ki Hoon gets to Yoo Ra's apartment, runs up the stairs, finds her puke, cleans it up, then goes in. She's wound up/"crumpled" because she had a horrid day on set. The director ripped her a new one. Ki Hoon listens, and to "straighten her" like they'd agreed, he tells her "I LOVE YOU. She says, " I don't feel straightened out at all”. Ki Hoon leaves and throws the puke he cleaned up in the bin.

      Reveal hidden contents

Of course, the confession is real, but KH throws it in as a way to heal Yoo Ra instead of being straightorward.

In another scene, Dong Hoon confronts CEO in the office and punches him. He lets it rip, asking CEO why he told YH about DH knowing about their affair etc.

While watching this part and Dong Hoon's scenes onwards, it dawned on me that Dong Hoon is behaving exactly like Ki Hoon earlier in the episode. He's fighting with the CEO in the office, shouting so loud that everyone on the floor can hear. He's punching DJY when he really wants to square it out with YH and JA. DH goes back to his cubicle and notices that the slippers that were in his drawer are not there any longer. He eyeballs JA in the best way his soft self can, as she drinks coffee at the refreshments area...

NB: At this point, DH had snubbed JA when he found out she took his bribe for her benefit. He then discovers about JAs life and her murder charge,. They have not had a conversation since he snubbed her. They're just orbiting around one another in the office. In the evening, he watches out for her outside the bar as he tries to smoke and look at his phone for her texts.

(After the fight in episode 9, the dynamics have altered slightly. DH is not the one who needs healing, JA is now the one in need.)

In Dong Hoons next scene (around 55:45), he runs up to JA. His inner petty comes out. DH is finally throwing a tantrum. He goes off on her about the slippers.

      Reveal hidden contents

DH: What did you do with my slippers?

JA: I was embarrassed, so I threw them away. I came to my senses when you hit me.

DH: So you threw them away? Am I not good enough to receive slippers from you?

DH: Did I treat you that way?

JA: Would you have worn them? Listen to me carefully. When we get to work tomorrow, fire me in front of everyone. Say that I've been harassing you and that this isn't the first time. Say that in front of everyone. Say that you warned me after I tried to kiss you but I misinterpreted your pity and made another move on you. Tell them everything.

    DH: I won't saying anything.

JA: It's true anyway. I mean it. It's going to be uncomfortable working in the same office anyway and it seems like the company wants to get rid of me, so fire me yourself. I have nothing to lose.

DH- I won't! I'm too old to immaturely fire you for liking me and I feel sick thinking about firing you and then ignoring you when we run into each other in the street. I have plenty of people I feel uncomfortable facing. I can't stand to have any more. I can't, because I feel sorry for myself for putting up with people like that............ I'll treat you the way I treat Chief Song and Deputy Kim, without any spite so treat me the same way. And be nice to people. Isn't it basic etiquette to treat people nicely? Why do you act like that? Did someone commit an unforgivable sin against you? I know the other employees didn't treat you nicely. I'll make sure that changes, so do better from now on. I'm going to see you finish your contract term and I'm going to hear that you're doing well at another company. And then in 10 or 20 years when I run into you again I'm going to greet you warmly. I won't avoid you because I feel uncomfortable. I'm going to face you with a smile. Let's do that. I'm begging you. Let's do that.

Then he pokes his finger in her direction and tells her, Buy me another pair of slippers.

I laughed my head off at this love confession. He's so cute, poking his finger in her face like that and stomping off!! hahahaha! JA is left dazed, looking at him.

    The parallels:

    1. KH checking for texts from YR. DH checking for texts from JA, debating how to talk to her.
    2. KH dumping on SH. DH dumping on CEO.
    3. KH running to YR. DH running to JA.
    4. YR wanting to be fired. JA telling DH to fire him the next day.
    5. KH helping YR to deal with her work environment. DH saying that he'll make sure JA is treated better at work and will finish her contract at the firm.
    6. KH confesses to YR. DH confesses to JA.
    7. Earlier in the episode, DH tries to smoke outside the bar while thinking about JA. KH also smokes while thinking about YR.
    8. KH says I Love You, DH says Buy me slippers!!

I’m not sure Writernim had created the three brothers as the three expressions of the human psyche, but it is mindblowing how well they fit! The writer also repeats the actions of one brother in another’s scenes, most importantly being the scene where Dong Hoon is running to JA (the public phone) but stops to take a taxi. That was foreshadowed in this episode with KH running to YR. Hehehehe!

Agreed in that I feel like this is the director’s indirect way of telling us where DH stands with JA. Reading this feels reaffirming and again what a brilliant mind/s behind MA

Really?? That’s such a biased opinion to suppport the no love line side. Watching it at the time, knowing that they said beforehand it doesn’t include a love line, you could definitely feel that there’s love there. Romantic or not. Isn’t that why there’s so much debate about what kind of love JA and DH has for each other? Because in the first place,  love is there. It was just all about defining what kind of love it is.

    2 hours ago, rellea said:

Apparently the commentary they filmed for the director cut DVD/blu ray is 6 hours long!! Holy cow they work fast! I'm so excited!! But it looks like they won't talk specifically about donghoon and jian's relationship... I guess since so many people interpret the drama differently they want to respect the various opinions

I don’t know, for me I feel it’s probably better that they don’t comment much about that? Only because I feel like if they did, they’d try so much to defend the earlier statement in the press con and although we probably already know what they really wanted to convey, they might downplay that and convince the nonshippers that yes, what they have isn’t a romantic kind of love. I feel like it would just ruin all the little nuances (as so many here have said) in the drama and the obviously careful details the director has put in.  Because they wanted to tell us something through those without telling us in words.

Thats, probably, in the end, the best ‘commentary’ they could’ve given -  to not say anything and address the conflict of opinions. Because maybe, them staying silent is their way of letting us know that the conclusion the shipper side has reached, is the right one. And isn’t this the reason we’re also still here? We weren’t given a solid statement or let’s say, the direct words, to get the closure the shippers could obviously see in the drama. There were all these clues scattered throughout each episodes and I think the only reason we’re doubting? (I dont think doubt is the right word but cant think of anything more apt at the moment) is because of the earlier statement in the press con.

Looking back now, actually, if I didn’t hear about the presscon before hand, I don’t think Id even have a doubt.

    Edit:

but we won’t know until we see the director’s cut ofcourse

Yes definitely! It feels like going back to secondary school where we had to analyse classics in literature. What seems nothing in the surface, after digging desper and finding patterns that the author has put along the story, you start to see that there’s more to it than meet the eyes. It’s so fun how you can have so much to say in just one scene!! I really cannot wait to watch something like MA again, can they all just reunite again? It doesn’t have to be the same story

Hmm, you think that the separation was more than a year? I thought itwaa just one year since theyve shown the season changes. Also in the IUtv video there was a caption saying 22 years old. Just wondering what made you think so because as you said, it does change things. It bugs me that all of us think differently about that. :sweatingbullets:

  17. @sadiesmith I know right!! I was like, is this the start of the end? Lol. It just felt quite sad but good to see new (?) usernames popping up. Hope this carries on.

@t123han I think it was YH who called DH. And him asking her of she wanted anything and her replying ‘beer’- it kind of laid out the groundwork of the show telling us she means to ‘talk’ - about their marriage (divorce ). And really, the following scenes hint at that so strongly. The first time I watched the ending I understood that DH and YH are at least separated, amicably.

@justamom It’s so nice to see you still posting. It always feel good to see long posts from everyone, can never get enough reading of everyone’s analysis/interpretations. I’ve tried watching so many dramas too but really couldn’t get past ep. 1. I know if I see a comment saying the same about My Mister, Id be so adamant to tell them to just push through and watch it  - but its sooo difficult to do that with other dramas after watching MM. What to do :(

Another thing I noticed upon my rewatch ( lol - Ive rewatched MA so many times. I always seem to go back after my failed attempts at other dramas).

    In ep. 13

When Director Yoon went to confront JiAn after her interview, he went and asked “Something is going on here, right?” That prompted Section Chief Song to interfere and say that she likes Lee Ji An. A bit later, DH couldn’t hold it in anymore and was about to barge in to dir. Yoon’s office but was again held down by Chief Song. He said “it’ll look strange” and DH looked around the office at the other employees.

DH asked “what’s strange” and do they think he wont do the same for them if they were treated like that too?

Anyway, my point is that Chief Kim seem to sense something too. The fact that he, without thinking twice, felt like he had to say that he liked Lee Ji an to avoid Dir. Yoon from prying more says a lot. He seemed perceptive of something between JiAn and DH too. Ofcourse he was trying to protect DH from that rumour between him and JH but the fact that it was only Chief Song who acted like that, kind of feels like us, in the sidelines, watching JA and DH. He has knowledge that there’s more there. In the car, as Asst. kim asked him why he said he liked JA. Asst. Kim didn’t even think anything strange between JA and DH. He was completely unaware and do not see where Chief Song is coming from. From his perspective, Chief Song’s actions were uncalled for and totally out of place.  But if you dig deep at Chief Song’s reaction and actions, it would have seemed weird too unless you see what it was he must’ve been thinking at that time.

Hopefully that made sense. I was a bit confused too when i first saw that scene. I know Dir. Yoon pointed out how no one really liked Lee Ji An at first and how things have changed so maybe thats why he said that too. After rewatching though and seeing all these little details, Ive come to think that Chief Song ‘felt’ something else between the two of them too.
