I really hope we see some more of him too!  At the moment think they should have switched his casting with Taecyeon.  It feel like they would be a better fit for each other's characters.

Like a number of other posters I think the catalyst for the story and our leads is going to be the death of Papa Hong Yu Chan:bawling:  I think these first four or so episodes are to get to know the characters and establish how HYC influences Vincenzo, his complicated relationship with his daughter.  The plot synopsis is for Vincenzo and HCY to teamup start dispensing justice using villainous methods along with Jang Joon Woo and their characters are nowhere near that...yet

From TVN Twitter: These "When God Created..." comics for Vincenzo drama are adorable!

I could only find the English translation for Vincenzo's character:

  3. Well, it is definitely interesting to read all the different perspectives in the thread.  I'm very happy to see a lot more positive posts about the premiere episodes:blush:

Sorry to cut your post short, just wanted to highlight the above. That is such a good perspective to justify the way she behaves- a teenager around her dad. Now that you have pointed this out I realise she is mostly eccentric around her dad. Maybe she is more like this since there is no mom in the picture hence her father's approval probably means a lot more to her than we realise right now.

That's my interpretation. It's only when she he is around her Dad she really acts out like an attention-seeking teenager.  Also to a lesser extent around Vincenzo because she is jealous and suspicious of him.  Vincenzo has been there three days and is already has her Dad's trust and attention whilst she can barely get Dad to answer her calls   She is eccentric but we have seen at work and in Court she is mostly pretty normal.  She is good at her job, she is intelligent and her suspicions about Vincenzo's interest in the building are spot on!  I get why people wish it was toned down but overall I think she is an entertaining and unique female lead. The contrast with the enigmatic, poker faced Vincenzo and their bickering back and forth is so fun. I am positive her character will evolve over the course of the drama anyway.

I also wondered about Cha Young's mother.  No pictures in the house and I can't see anything about her mother on the official page.  Hong Yoo Chan's character profile mentions something about a wife and custody case but I don't understand because the Google translate isn't clear.

    Hello!

New member here. Been a fan of SJK since Nice Guy/The Innocent Man days. I’ve followed all his projects and the thing I love about Vincenzo is it’s yet another different role that SJK is challenging. The good and evil aspect makes him stand out from your usual kdrama hero and I’m looking forward to seeing how his schemes are executed. I hope they stick with the “an eye for an eye” trope and not make him change solely to uphold the role of the main protagonist.

My two cents on the drama so far, I can definitely do without the obnoxious humor which I know this writer is famous for. Nonetheless I’m willing to see it through. I’m invested enough in Vincenzo as a character and him becoming allies with the father and daughter duo. Speaking of which, do any of you think there will be a love line between Vincenzo and Hong Cha Young? I know many of you can’t stand her and I, too, think she can afford to tone it down a couple notches here and there. But overall, I like that her character is eccentric and fun contrary to the typical prim and proper female leads. JYB is also lovely and the dynamic between Vincenzo and HCY will certainly be a fun one to watch, at the very least. Not to mention how beautiful the two look so it’d be a waste to walk away without a love line in my opinion. And slightly because I’ve been deprived of SJK in an actual love type drama since DOTS so I’m really hoping the writer comes through despite his past dramas not having any love lines.

It’s interesting reading reviews on here and reading reviews everywhere else. It’s as though you’re watching completely different dramas. Everyone else seems pleased and harping about how great it is while everyone here is either indifferent, dislike it, or confused lol. But I understand everyone has their own taste/opinions. Despite the varying reviews from international viewers, I’m glad it’s being well received in Korea. I hope the ratings will be as high or surpass that of its predecessor Mr Queen. Because of course I want to see nothing but success for SJK! He’s doing a great job per usual and I can’t wait to see the story unfold.

I really do admire Song Joong Ki for making an effort to challenge himself with different roles. Regarding your question, I believe Vincenzo will have a love line with Cha Young as he drama description states that Vincenzo falls in love ini Korea:wub:  I'm already feeling some sparks even though they don't like or trust each other yet!

The scenes with Vincenzo and Hong Yoo Chan bonding were some of my favourites.  Yoo Jae Myung is such a good actor.  I have only seen him playing villains so it's nice to have him playing a good and selfless character like Papa Hong. This was one of the cutest moments and, apparently, it was an adlib:w00t:

Making video for Episodes 1 and 2

Lots of fun on set.  It always makes me wonder how cold they must be in costume when the BTS they are wearing big padded coats The cameos from Jung Soon Won, Jin Seon Kyu and Lee Hee Joon were very funny:lol:

Thanks for the Italian review.  i was thinking they sounded pretty good but I guess this for you is what i feel like when I hear "fluent" English speakers and actors in K-dramas.

What did you think of the actors in the Italian scenes? Was there Italian convincing? They sounded convincing to me but you would know better.

  5. I seem to have a different opinion to most here as I really enjoyed both episodes . I know some people didn't like the humor but I thought the first episode was absolutely hilarious:lol::lol::lol: I also loved the contrast between Vincenzo in Italy - super cool, unflappable, powerful, everything worked out for him so seamlessly even though he was foreigner and Vincenzo in South Korea - back in what is (technically) his home land and he is a real fish out of water going from mishap to mishap.

Loved seeing Vincenzo and Daddy Hong bonding in episode 2.  So cute when HYH was showing him how to drink the Korean way and Vicenzo turned all the way around^_^ Daddy Hong is becoming a mentor and father figure to Vincenzo without either of them realising it. Vincenzo and HCY meeting and bickering ws very fun.  HCY showing that she really does care and she isn't as comfortable with Wusang's methods as she says.  The appearances by our antagonists, Kwak Dong Yeon and Kim Yeo Jin's character joining HCY's firm.  Did anyone else notice the tension between HCY and Kim Yeo jin?  I might be reading too much into it but I wonder if they have a backstory.

That party and that final scene:love:

    On 2/21/2021 at 6:56 PM, rita96 said:

I get the feeling that HYC is going to die given how he is getting close with Vincenzo and then that will probably trigger Vincenzo and HCY to work together and fight crime.

But I have to say that while the plot looks promising I am still not able to connect or understand the characters except HYC (the good lawyer). JYB is such a good actress but I dont know if its because of the way her character is written that I am not really connecting with her character- esp her over top reactions sometimes take away from the true emotion of the scene. And its so frustrating because I LOVED her in Be Melo!!!!! I hope the tone of her character changes quickly. Also with Vincenzo is he starting to genuinely feel for the tenants, the injustuce he was talking about with HYC when they were drinking was it this? I thought his only intention was the money.

As much as I criticise the episodes I am still gonna watch it just cause I had such high expectations to see SJK and JYB on screen together so desperately wishing for the coming episodes to be better!

I also think that HYC is going to be murdered:cry:  At the moment the tone is quite lighthearted but I think (if we are right about HYC's death flag) the death of someone so clearly good and righteous whom they both care about is going to be the catalyst for Vincenzo and Cha Young to start working together and exacting revenge on evil.

I think Hong Cha Young's character is supposed to be kind of eccentric anyway but I also feel like she acts out-particularly around her father-the adult equivalent is of teenage rebellion and attention seeking.  The scenes in her father's office she totally reminded me of a stroppy teenager!  She loves her father and he loves her but they have a dysfunctional relationship with her father disappointed in her for her decisions and she resents him judging her for her choices.  I think her character is also insecure because as we saw from her dad's embarrassing:lol: pictures she used to be chubby, plain tomboy when she was growing up and now she is slim, beautiful, rich and successful but she doesn't have her father's approval, unpopular at work, spends her spare time working or arguing with her Dad and it's obvious deep down she isn't quite as cold and ruthless as she pretends.

I also love Jeon Yeo Bin as an actress and so far this character has been too much of a caricature to show what a great actress she is.  We saw serious Cha Young in the tteokbokki scene where she lectures Vincenzo about how all of Korea is a Mafia. I hope we see more of that side of HCY as the drama progresses. I do agree some of HCY's reactions are over the top but I suspect a lot of the over the top-ness is down to the directing because a lot of the actors seem to be playing their characters OTT so I think the director instructed actors to dial the wacky humour up to 11.

Unlike others on the thread I do enjoy most of the humour except the placement of the NIS agent's scenes.  I think the scenes are very funny but I feel like a better idea would have been to make them fun little easter eggs just before the credits rather than plopping them in the middle of the drama as they interrupt the flow of the story.  Same with the Vincenzo at the fake Italian chef's restaurant. I think those scenes are very funny but I hope they aren't going to repeat the same joke (poor chef nervously cooks, Vincenzo insults and rejects the fake Italian food) every episode.  I enjoy the humour to introduce the crazy characters of the Plaza but I also hope we get to know them beyond comic scenes.

But I am probably totally wrong because Kwak Dong Yeon didn't react to him at all when they met in episode 2.

I think that was a fantasy sequence in Vincenzo's mind.  He hasn't actually demolished the building.

I think the demolish the building arc is just a McGuffin anyway.  It's what made him come to SK but it's not what is going to make him stay:blush:

I have a feeling that the monk is going to play a larger role than we think too!I really hope he'll make the foolish king realize his huge mistake!!!The foolish king reign will end in 590...So i think one day  he will wake up and start fighting for his country and children...From trailer we see that the moment his wife neckledge is found and realises she might be alive he sent General Go Geon to look for her and bring her to palace... PYEONGGANG is  the spitting image of her mother, QUEEN YEON so the idiot won't be able to kill her(we did see him crying in front of his wife body)

I don't think Pyeonggang will ever forgive the king for ordering the murder of her mother.  I would be surprised to see him reign until 590 as he appears to be incompetent and unstable with few allies. I wonder if the drama will take some sort of artistic license.

I also believe the monk will make a reappearance.  I just don't think they will introduce the character and, specifically, that he is one of the best fighters in the country for no reason.

Nice that the drama has made people interested in searching more about the history and the real characters:

That's what I suspect. I think he really does recognise her or at the very least find her familiar.

I am still very unsure of the politics and political factions. It seems like some of the Council aren't as bad as the others but aside from General Go Geon's dad I am really not sure who is who or where they represent or what the different titles mean (although that might be because of inadequate subtitles.  It also isn't easy to research Goguryeo information if you don't speak Korean) This is where at least one more introductory episode would have helped with these complex aspects but, hopefully, this will become clearer in the upcoming episodes.

For lots of people On Dal is the weakest character of this drama... I guess its off putting for some of you because he’s such a ”fool” , and that’s understandable. However, I like him. He’s a good person as already shown when he was concerned about the deer (probably most people during that time era couldn’t care less about animals , if they were in pain).Anyways, he won’t be stuck as just a ”fool” forever. Can’t wait for the love story between On Dal and Pyongggang to start ~

I agree with you and @yeli That's one of the resons I am impressed with Ji Soo because it's not an easy character to play and make appealing.  The prospect of a lead male who is a slow idiot doesn't exactly make the heart flutter.

I think the writing and Ji Soo have done a good job of making it so you can see why others would think he is dumb but you can still see in his actions and words that he has his own quiet wisdom and charm.  It's actually made me relieved they cast younger than the original choice for the more mature Kang Ha Neul. I think On Dal's attitude is more believable in a youthful looking actor compared to a more mature actor when it would make him seem...um...slow for lack of a better word.

That scene was horrible.  I thought it was a bit over the top to force him to stay with them.  There were enough of the tribe left that they could have just restrained a young boy and taken him forcibly away until he calmed down without the nanny having to mutilate herself!

LMAO at how they made it look like the horse was galloping fast and it was just KSH acting and the horse in the same place.  These making videos can really kill the magic sometimes!

Ji Soo and Kim So Hyun have really good chemistry on and off screen.  I think it definitely helps they already know each other.

I am not sure Go Geon 's father is in this plan.He always want to kill the king and he would be glad if someone else did this job for him. That's why he stopped Gogeon. If someone else make this ,he would easily take the throne .

But ı think the master of Gajin wants to get rid off the king and Gajin . He hates Goguryeo and with this plan he wants to kill the king and the princess. Maybe he wants to revenge  for the king ,because the king killed the innocent monks .

I agree.  I don't think it was his dad who has behind the note.  He wants the King dead so he would want the assassin to succeed and wouldn't have put that in jeopardy by letting someone know about an assassination attempt.

My guess is the mysterious female second lead, Mo Yong, is behind the note.  The character description mentions she has the gift of foresight.

Ga Jin's master is another mysterious guy whose motives we need to discover.  Who is he?  Why does he hate the King (From what we have seen of the King there are a hundred reasons lmao:lol: but what are his specific reasons?)  Why did he choose Ga
Jin and go to the effort of suppressing her memories for years, training her up and creating a new identity for her?

  12. Yay! Great to see the ratings staying strong. I hope they can get double figures next week:partyblob:

I just finished the first two episodes and I am ecstatic.  Finally! A serious epic, romantic historical drama.  The acting is fantastic, the action is thrilling, the plot is engaging, the ladies are strong and the cinematography is stunning.

I am so impressed with Kim So Hyun here  Her acting here is leaps and bounds better than the last drama I watched her in (The Tale of Nokdu) and her chemistry with Ji Soo is already lovely. I can't wait to see their love develop.

I will admit I wasn't wasn't too sure ift Ji Soo would be able to pull off playing On Dal as I think this is a very difficult character to play but he is doing a great job so far. It is difficult to get the balance right without making On Dal seem like a total moron.  On Dal character is pretending to be clueless and harmless but occasionally the mask slip and his intelligence and pain underneath. Jisoo manages to convincingly play the "fool" part and still keep the character very charming and wise in his own way.

The king is a jealous idiot.  I don't feel sorry for him at all:rage: i just feel sorry for the ladies in the harem who have to put up with his madness (I'm sorry but I was ROFL when he was making those poor girls fight:sweat_smile:)and Pyeonggang's little brother. Poor boy lost his mother and sister, has to hear everybody badmouth his mother as an adulterer, the King is out of his mind and the new Queen treats him like an outcast.  I hope Ga Jin regains her memories soon so brother and sister can be reunited.

Kang Ha Neul only had a brief cameo but he really made a huge impression as General On Hyeop.  I am very sorry we won't see more of him.

I really like her two assassin pals especially the female assassin who helped bring our soon to be OTP closer together hehe;) Also I only realised when I saw their names are Tara Jin and Tara San that they must be brother and sister.

So far the second lead seems like a good guy. It seems he already loved her when they were children so I hope his character doesn't become bitter when he realises Pyeonggang's loves On Dal.

My biggest criticism is I think the backstory in episode 1 happened a bit too quickly. It was a lot of characters and historical and political information to digest in 50 minutes. I think it would have been better to tell this part of the story across at least two episodes but I understand they wanted to get into the current storyline quickly. Dramas used to devote multiple early episodes to the childhood and backstory of the leads. It is one of the reasons child actors like So Hyun, Kim Yoo Jung, Yeo Jin Goo became so famous. Sadly, I have noticed K-dramas lately seem to be hesitant to have long youth centred episodes because they are afraid the audience will lose interest:(

I hope we will learn more about the warrior turned monk and the Queen's backstory.  Or if he will become a significant character later on in the drama. I don't think the Queen cheated but I do believe he was her true love. The marriage to the king was political and certainly arranged when she was very young.

LOL! I was looking at some comments during the first episode and they thought because KSH was playing mother and daughter it would be the same dual role for hottie Kang Ha Neul.  Unfortunately, they were to be let down when Ji Soo appeared:lol::lol::lol:

On February 15, tvN’s new drama “Vincenzo” held an online press conference with producing director (PD) Kim Hee Won and cast members Song Joong KiJeon Yeo Bin, and 2PM’s Taecyeon.

“Vincenzo” stars Song Joong Ki as Vincenzo Cassano, a lawyer and Mafia consigliere who was adopted by an Italian family at a young age. When he moves back to Korea due to a conflict within his organization, he crosses paths with a sharp-tongued lawyer named Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Bin) and her intern Jang Joon Woo (Taecyeon). They join forces to use villainous methods in taking down villains who cannot be punished by the law.

Director Kim Hee Won previously worked on “The Crowned Clown” and “Money Flower,” while screenwriter Park Jae Bum previously worked on “The Fiery Priest,” “Good Manager,” “Good Doctor,” and “God’s Quiz.”

Kim Hee Won shared, “The main character is Italian by nationality because of his Mafia backstory. I wanted the main character to be a foreigner and a stranger, so that there could be a new kind of comedy and chemistry that arises from the clash. I tried to mix both stable and unstable compositions in the mise-en-scène and the soundtrack uses a lot of opera arias.”

Song Joong Ki said, “I think that Vincenzo is a relatable character not just for me, but for lots of people. We hear on the news about evil people in all kinds of fields. When I got the synopsis, there were a few lines about the writer’s intentions. I’d never related so much to a writer’s intentions before. I could feel his passion to write about social criticism, and to write characters who solved those social issues in refreshing ways. When you see the news, you get so angry. You want those evil people to be punished. Everyone thinks like that. Reading the script gave me the same feeling.”

He added, “My character is a character who feels set apart after living in Italy for so long. He returns to his motherland, Korea, and feels various emotions such as loneliness, sadness, but also relief.” The actor also rated the role as the most difficult one he’d ever played, requiring both action scenes and speaking Italian.

Jeon Yeo Bin talked about her character, Hong Cha Young, and said, “I was curious about how she would come to life, this character whom I’d first met on the script page. She was a big challenge for me. With the help of my seniors, she also became a more well-rounded character.” The actress added, “I’m still not a very familiar face among the public, so it would be nice if she could be so memorable that people would say, ‘Oh, that’s Hong Cha Young!’ when they see me.”

Taecyeon said, “When I first learned about the project called ‘Vincenzo,’ it felt very fresh to me. It was a story I’d never encountered before, and I was curious about what direction it would go. My character Joon Woo has eyes only for Cha Young, but he has his own path of growth. He seems kind of clumsy, but I was curious about how he’d grow as well.” About his physical transformation, he said, “I did my best to express someone who was just starting out in their career.”

Kim Hee Won explained that she had cast Song Joong Ki because of his drama “The Innocent Man.” She said, “He seems so innocent and naive in that role, but there’s loneliness and darkness in him. I realized I had a lot in common with that character. [Song Joong Ki] is the best partner I could ask for as a director. It’s an honor to work with someone who can balance the drama’s scale, serious moments, and comedic moments all in one.”

About casting Jeon Yeo Bin and Taecyeon, she said, “I saw her last drama and movie and thought that she was a talented actor. When we first met, we got into some small talk and I felt that her approach toward acting was pure and clean. There are a lot of moments when you have to let go of yourself in comedy, but Jeon Yeo Bin is someone who throws all that away and approaches acting with a pure mindset. Taecyeon gives off a healthy and energetic image in movies and dramas. He’s someone that makes you feel good to watch. His character has a lot of moments of change and growth, but there are times when his natural self comes through. I wanted to show a new side of him through this character.”

I was also a bit underwhelmed by fashion and hair at the press conference. But then it's the drama which is important. BUT also I enjoy nice looks at a promo event for a drama. And I didn't like SJK's hair either. Like... whoever did this: please STOP!

:lol:Right? SJK's hair has looked so good for Space Sweeper promotion recently but I don't know what they were trying to do for his hairstyle here:mellow:  This is JYB's first lead role in a drama and they put her in that! Like, what?!  I know Korean fashion is mostly underwhelming any way and I get that she isn't a big name yet so she probably doesn't have a lot of choices..but I'm sure they could have found something better than that drab, shapeless dress. Even just a nicely, tailored suit would have looked great and worked for the character she is playing. So sad because her hair and make-up were beautiful:facepalm:

At least we know their styling in the drama is impeccable:doggie:

  16. Amazing new teaser:partyblob:  I noticed in the longer highlight teaser played during the press conference there is a pretty big spoiler but it isn't in this teaser.

Thanks for the pictures of the press conference @ssteph @Jillia  Always happy to see a female director. I love them but who did the handsome Song Joong Ki's hair like that and put the beautiful Jeon Yeo Bin in that sack of a dress:sweat_smile:. No complaints about Ok Tacyeon's styling:relaxed:

I am looking forward to their scenes together. They make a much better couple to look at than the Queen with the King:sweat_smile:

Suspicious of the newcomer, Hong Cha Young seems to intentionally get on Vincenzo’s nerves, leading to a furious outburst in Italian on his part. Unperturbed, the tough-as-nails lawyer coolly retorts, “Kind of sounds like bad words.”

Yesssss! These types of pairings are my favourite. They are entertaining with lots of sexual tension

I love them so much already:heart3:

I am not sure if this has been addressed before.
The relationship chart seems to show that jang joon woo likes hong cha young but seems to be one sided. While vincenzo and hong cha young doesnt have any love lines. Character description is however, tells otherwise.   I hope they wont play any draggy love triangle plot, but given the genre and the writer if there is one it would be more on a comedic side. What do you guys think?

The arrow shows the feelings are one-sided on Jang Joon Woo's part whilst Vincenzo and Hong Cha Young's arrow/feelings are mutual. I think Hong Cha Young only views JJW as her trusted junior. From the teasers it seems like JJW's character is cute so I think his jealousy and a rivalry with Vincenzo will be played more for humour than angst (I still think there is more to this character;)).

    Press conference today:partyblob:
