Anticipation builds for Kang Dong-won’s new movie M

The wait for model turned sexy actor, Kang Dong-won’s new movie, M is almost over. We, at POPSEOUL! have been waiting for this movie to come out since March! And now it’s finally here. The cast, including fashion misfit, Kong Hyojin and aspiring actress Lee Yeon-hee held a press conference at Megabox at COEX on October 16th.

The story of M” is about a best-selling writer (Kang Dong-won in glasses), who, just before getting married to his fiancee (Kong Hyo-jin) who looks back to his long deceased first love (Lee Yeon-hee).

The movie “M” opens on October 25th, 2007.

[movie REVIEW] Lee Myung-se's psychodrama 'M' big on the glitzy visuals

Lee Myung-se's latest psychodrama "M" got a lot of attention at the Pusan International Film Festival which ended on Friday, partly because there were only a handful of "new" Korean films making their formal debuts. Another, more important reason was that "M" features top-rated stars such as Gang Dong-won.

He is a heartthrob in Korea, and director Lee, who became famous for his stylized features like "Nowhere to Hide" and "Duelist." The two were a big draw during a press preview held in Seoul on Tuesday.

The film revolves around the experience of a writer of a bestseller, Min-woo (played by Gang), and his dreamy journey into the past where he attempts to reunite with his first love, whose existence is shrouded in mystery.

Min-woo has a bad case of writer's block; to break out of this artistic stalemate, he immerses himself in flashbacks involving his first love, Mi-mi (Lee Yeon-hee). But this psychological quest involves several obstacles, one of which is the suspicion of his current girlfriend Eun-hye (Gong Hyo-jin).

But the plot itself might not help the audiences grasp what the movie tries to achieve, largely because director Lee uses plenty of visual effects, complex (and confusing) dream sequences, and gliding camerawork.

At the news conference following the press preview, director Lee said that this movie is based on his earlier screenplay "Milyoung," which he had written in 2000. "The original script was inspired by one of the dreams I had, and, by the way, I almost always have a major dream around the New Year's Day. In that dream, I met the novelist Choi In-ho, and we talked about what the dream really means," he explained.

In the dream about dreams, Lee concluded that dreams provide a channel through which the living and the dead communicate; this is a theme that informs the main plot of "M."

Asked about the rich visual effects, director Lee said he wanted to describe the darkness in a way that highlights its shining light. "Some might ask how darkness can shine at all, but, on a closer look at the darkness, we can feel the layers of darkness and its intricate depth," he said.

The emphasis on darkness is also linked with the dreamy state, or a moment before one wakes up to the bright light, Lee added.

Gang Dong-won, meanwhile, said that he was steadily encouraged by the filmmaker to keep an open mind about the story and his performing, depending on the nature of a specific scene. Gang, who worked with Lee in his previous feature, "Duelist," said he felt that he was experimenting with his own acting talent a lot during the production.

"There's a rumor about director Lee, concerning his strict style in the shooting sessions, but I think he's very kind and gentle, because I've never seen him lose his temper. Never. Director Lee is very persistent in getting things right, getting things done, but once actors open up their hearts, and focus on acting, he's quite a kindhearted person," Gang said.

As with "Duelist," Lee's latest film is filled with startling visual effects, but critics and audiences did not react positively to "Duelist." People were disappointed with the poor storytelling. This raises the possibility of a not-so-impressive reaction to "M" at the box office.

However, director Lee seemed unfazed by such a prospect. "Every director cares about the audience and their reception of his films, but the relationship between directors and audiences is similar to the act of writing a love letter. Even though the box-office scores are not good, I will continue to write my love letter to my audiences, and I believe a true feeling will be eventually delivered," Lee said.

"M" is set to be released nationwide on Oct. 25.

-지난 6일 부산 파라다이스 호텔 시드니 룸에서 열린 영화 ‘M’의 기자회견이 파행을 겪은 것은 물론 영화제 측이 사전에 기자들이 몰릴 것을 제대로 예측하지 못해 상대적으로 작은 공간을 회견장으로 잡았기 때문입니다. 하지만 그것은 역설적으로 강동원이라는 스타에 대한 관심이 얼마나 뜨거운지를 증명한 사례이기도 하죠.

“팬 미팅처럼 저를 좋아해주시는 분들만 모인 자리는 편합니다. 그런데 부산영화제의 기자회견 같은 자리는 아직도 무서워요. 그 기자회견에 오신 분들 모두가 저를 좋아해주시거나 ‘M’이라는 영화에 특별히 관심이 있으셔서 인터뷰를 하러 오신 건 아닐 테니, 저도 상당히 긴장되죠.”

Like fan meeting, only those who like me take it easy/untroubled with crowded venue. Nonetheless, the venue for the same-sized press conference at PIFF does not yet have enough vacancies for all. Who come to that press conference are all who like me or have interest in 'M' so i considerably answered questions, which was supposed not to take place at first.

-그런 자리에서 혹시라도 실수할까 봐요?

So is this rarely seen from such occasion?

“네. 공식석상에서 한국 배우들이 너무 말을 못 한다는 이야기도 있는데, 사실 그런 자리에서 말 실수 한 번 하면 아예 매장당하는 수준까지 가는 일도 있으니, 꺼릴 수 밖에 없는 측면이 있는 것 같습니다. 그런 자리는 정말 무서워요. 실수해도 용납이 안 될 것 같은 분위기도 있구요. 그래서 조심하죠.”

Yes. At official meetings, Korean actors can't talk much but onversation is available, frankly at such occasion if we can talk for once, outside matters cannot possiply be never avoided . Such occasions are really horrible.

-배우들에겐 그런 공포가 다들 있는 것 같습니다.

Then all actors seem to announce officially that way?

“다 그러실 거예요. 저도 자연스럽게 잘하고 싶은데 혹시 실수할까봐 아예 말을 줄이고 조심하는 거죠. ‘여기서는 기본만 하자’는 마음이 있어요.(웃음) 저를 찍는 카메라가 한 대만 있으면 저도 자연스럽게 움직일 수 있는데, 그렇게 사진 찍는 분들이 많은 자리에 서면 어떻게 해야할지 잘 모르겠어요.”

“별다른 구설수는 없었어요. 워낙 그런 자리에서는 기본만 하니까요.(웃음) 오픈된 기자회견장에서 하는 말과 진지하고 친밀한 인터뷰에서 하는 말은 완전히 다르게 받아들여지는 것 같아요. 아, 이런 일이 있었어요. 제가 ‘형사’ 때 영화평론가협회가 주관하는 영평상 시상식장에서 감독님을 대신해 작품상을 대리수상한 적이 있어요. 저는 그 영화에서 안성기 선배님의 연기가 너무 좋았기에, 수상 소감을 할 때 안선배님을 염두에 두고 ‘이 영화는 제가 예상했던 모든 상을 다 받았는데 아직 여우주연상과 남우조연상을 못 받았으니, 앞으로 그 두 부문만 수상하면 여한이 없을 것 같습니다’라고 말했어요. 그랬더니 ‘강동원, 남우조연상도 욕심내’ 라는 제목의 기사가 뜨더군요.(웃음) 그 기사 이후에 여러 군데서 비아냥을 들었어요. 역시 그런 데서는 기본만 했어야 했는데 말이죠.(웃음) 그러니 제가 이제 영화를 6편 했고, 드라마까지 치면 9편을 했는데도 여전히 무서워할 수 밖에 없는 거예요.”

I didnot have any. Primarily because only basic things are done at such occasion. (smile) At opened press conference with announcement, serious and friendly interview, my words appeared to be acctepted completely. Ah, there was a thing like this. During 'Duelist' Movie critism association award at the ceremony substitute director award, there was an alternate possibility (???) Senior Ahn Sung Gi's acting was very good, but when stating own opinions senior Ahn gave a thought that 'I presumed that this movie got all off the awards but yet it couldn't receive Best actor and Best actress awards, in the future if we receive these two categories, this wouldnot be our unastisfied grudge. It is like that the article ploats the issue of that 'Gang Dong Won, the lead actor is also greedy for the award'. (smile) After that article, i heard of sarcasm from many places. Of course, those places must have stood on arguments to say so.(smile) I have so far filmed in 6 movies, 9 works if dramas are included, then i will no longer be as horrified as before.

-오늘 이 자리는 무섭지 않으시죠?(웃음)

This occasion (interview) today isnot horrible at all, is it?(smile)

“전혀요.(웃음) 사실 옛날에는 인터뷰 때 무슨 말을 해야 하는지도 몰랐어요. ‘이 영화를 하면서 좋았냐’고 물으면, 그저 간단히 ‘좋았다’고 말하고 입을 닫는 식이었죠.(웃음) 이제는 저라는 사람의 생각을 보여드릴 수 있는 자리가 이런 인터뷰 밖에 없다고 적극적으로 여기는 편입니다.”

Totally not.(smile) Frankly, in the past during the interview i didnt really know well what i should say. If you ask 'Did the filming go well?', i just then answer shortly 'It was good' and shut my mouth. (smile)

-이명세 감독님의 신작 ‘M’에서 결혼을 앞두고 첫사랑의 기억을 찾아 헤매는 소설가 민우역을 맡아, 평소와 달리 곱슬머리에 뿔테 안경을 쓰고 나오셨습니다. 심지어 앞머리 헤어 스타일 자체를 M자 모양으로 했다면서요?

“처음부터 M자 모양으로 하려던 것은 아니었어요. 촬영 전 감독님께서 극중 인물인 민우의 스타일에 대한 컨셉트를 이미 갖고 계셨죠. 곱슬머리에 탈모가 시작된 듯, 머리 스타일이 좀 보이는 게 좋겠다면서요. 그런데 그게 외국 배우들에겐 멋진데, 동양 배우에겐 썩 잘 어울리진 않는 것 같아요. 다 하고 나서 머리 모양이 M자 비슷해진 걸 보시더니, 감독님이 좋아하시며 이후부터 M자 헤어스타일 이야기를 하시기 시작했죠.(웃음)”

Right from the beginning, it wasnot done with the shape of letter M. Before the filming, director was searching for great concepts and meanings for the main character Min Woo's style. Curly hair began and hair style like green onion would be good recognised. However, that style applied to foreign actors would be great, but oriental actors appears not to go well with it awfully. After considerating all while director likes the shape of letter 'M', we began to discuss 'M' shaped hairstyle. (smile)

-곱슬머리나 뿔테 안경은 누구 아이디어였습니까.

Who does the ideas of cirly hair and horn-rimmed spectacles belong to?

“전부 감독님 생각이셨죠. 출연이 결정되기도 전이었는데, 저를 만나셔서 ‘이번엔 이런 헤어 스타일을 하고 나와야 하는 거야’라면서 설명하시더라구요.(웃음) 그 이야기를 듣고 그렇게 하면 재미있겠다는 생각이 바로 들더군요.”

-그렇게 해보니 스스로 어떻던가요.(웃음)

What if i try that style after watching. (smile)

“확실히 나이가 들어 보이더라구요.(웃음) 저는 배역과 작품에 잘 어울리는 스타일이라고 생각했어요.”

Certainly you look older. (smile) I thought this matches well with the role and movie.

-‘M’은 배우로서 다르게 연기할 수 밖에 없는 영화입니다. 이야기가 최소한으로 줄어든 상황에서 이미지에 집중하는 영화이고, 사실적인 연기보다는 인공적인 연기를 해야 하는 작품이니까요. 다른 영화에서와 비교하면 ‘M’의 연기 방식은 어떻게 달랐습니까.

Movie 'M' have few differences in terms of acting. The movie concentrates upon images from circumstances shrinked by few dialogues/conversations, and this is due to that this is a movie of technical/artful performance than the lead actors's acting. So to what extent/how is your acting in 'M' different from your other movies?

“말씀하신대로 연기의 톤 자체를 인공적이고 좀 과장되게 잡았어요. 그게 이 영화에 잘 어울릴 거라고 생각했거든요. 이 영화를 하면서 또 한 가지 염두에 둔 것은 연기를 유동적으로 해야겠다는 것이었죠. 특정한 방식대로 연습을 계속해서 틀에 박힌 연기를 하는 것 보다는, 극중 상황에 따라 이렇게도 하고 저렇게도 하면서 변화를 보여주자는 것이었습니다. 두려워하지 말고 현장에서 지르자는 게 이 영화를 찍으면서 배우로서 제가 가졌던 목표였습니다.”

As what you said, this is artful performance and i caught a way of acting exaggeratedly. Because i thought that this would match well the movie, i was also have to move freely a variety of prearranged things of acting. I continued with a specific method, and compared to what make stuck acting in the framework while i tried this way, that way in accordance with dramatic circumstances, the changes were found. I am not afraid of such things as yelling on the spot and i aimed to that as an actor.

-이 영화에서의 대사들은 그 의미 못지 않게 리듬이 중요합니다. 어떤 대사는 너무 빨라서 무슨 뜻인지 잘 파악되지 않을 때도 있는데, 사실 그런 대사들은 관객이 그 의미를 파악하지 않아도 별 문제가 되지 않죠. 영화 속에서 반복되는 일식집 장면 같은 데서 강동원씨는 대사를 아주 빠르고 코믹한 톤으로 처리합니다.

The rhythm plays important part in convey untold meanings of many lines in this movie. Everything is very fast so my mind didn't catch well, frankly many guests also didn't grasp those meanings but this is not problematic. Within the movie Gang Dong Won ssi handles to speak your lines very fast in the eclipse house scene.

“이 영화에서 대사를 처리하는 방식은 확실히 달랐습니다. 사실 제가 ‘형사’를 찍을 때 안성기 선배님이 등장하는 한 장면을 보면서 무척 해보고 싶다는 생각을 속으로 했었어요. 안선배님이 프레임 속으로 들어갔다 나왔다 그러면서 아주 빠르게 계속 말하는 장면이었는데, 그 리듬을 더욱 과장된 방식으로, 현대판으로, 한 번 해보고 싶었죠.”

The lines in the movie were certainly different. To tell you the truth, during the making of 'Duelist' while i watch a scene between me and senior Ahn Sung Gi, etc...i have thought to attempt extremely. While senior Ahn Sung Gi went into the frame and that's the scene in which he spoke very fast, that rhythm became more exaggrerated , i then definitely wanted to try for once in a mordern version movie.

-‘형사’의 그 장면에서도 정말 대사의 스피드가 대단했죠.

Within that scene of 'Duelist' the speed of lines were very exceeding.

“네. ‘M’의 일식집 장면에서는 제 상대역으로 나오신 출판사 편집장 배역의 배우 분 연기도 좀 과장되잖습니까. 저는 그 일식집에서 감정적으로 폭발하는 장면을 찍을 때 그 분의 과장되고 독특한 스타일을 좀더 허황된 방식으로 되풀이하는 스타일의 연기를 하면서 배우로 무척 흥미를 느꼈어요.”

Yeah. In the eclipse house scene of 'M', performance of a coactor who starred the publishing company's chief editor also becomes a bit exaggerated? In that house when i filmed an explosive scene in which i felt that people become exaggerated, performing unique style which is somehow incredile, then i got interested exceedingly in him.

-그 일식집 장면은 연기에 다양한 변화가 가능한 상황이어서 지켜보는 사람에게도 흥미로웠습니다. 선풍기 돌아가는 소리가 말 소리에 영향을 주는 방식이라든지, 모두 세 차례나 반복되면서 마치 돌림노래 하듯 서로 다른 세 배우가 같은 대사를 변주하도록 짜여져 있는 형식 같은 것이 그랬죠. 그렇다면, 이 영화에서 연기적으로 가장 재미있었던 장면은 그 일식집 장면들이었습니까.

There is possibility of the diverse changes in acting through that scene, so this kept viewers interested in the movie. With the return of electric fan's sound which exerts influence on the film method, it is in harmony among the lines of four other actors/actresses mutually just as the song in turn of the four orders are all repeated, right. If so, the eclipse house scene is the most exciting in the movie?

“네, 맞습니다. 희열 같은 게 있었어요. 사실 그 장면 촬영 자체는 기술적으로 좀 난이도가 높아서 힘들었어요. 아침 아홉시부터 준비했는데, 오후 네시가 되어서야 촬영에 들어갈 수 있었죠. 아홉시의 길이가 꽤 긴 롱테이크였는데, 기술적인 문제들 때문에 열댓번을 거듭해 찍기도 했구요. 그 장면들에서 민우가 괴로워할수록 그 방이 좁아지도록 표현되는데, 그런 세트의 변화가 카메라의 움직임과 잘 맞물리지 못해 계속 엔지가 났어요.”

Yes, that's right. It was likely delighting. Frankly there are many difficulties to film that scene then i was really tired. From 9am i had to prepare so that we could begin the filming at 4pm. Because of the technical reasons, we made it cut 15 times. Those scenes depict that Min Woo suffers, that room becomes narrow, the changes in such those sets did not match well the camera’s movement so NGs continued to take place.

-민우가 마음 속으로 상상하거나 꿈을 꾸는 장면 혹은 과거를 회상하는 장면에선 슬랩스틱코미디 연기도 있고 과장된 방식의 연기도 있어서 그런 표현법에 익숙하지 않은 어떤 관객들은 당혹감을 느낄 수도 있을 것 같습니다.

In scenes that depict Min Woo’s imagination or recalls of his past, slapstick comedy acting was applied, this could possibly make viewers feel perplexed to understand the expressions.

“민우가 일상에서는 결코 과장된 모습을 보이지 않죠. 환상이거나 꿈일 수도 있는 장면에서만 그렇게 표현되었어요. 그게 민우라는 인물의 강박이 표출되는 모습이라고 생각했거든요. 저는 그 두 가지 종류의 민우 모습을 그려내면서 아예 다른 장르라고 생각하고 연기했어요. 아무리 냉철한 사람이라도 누구나 자신의 상상 속에서는 미칠 수도 있는 것이니까요.”

Exaggerating daily gestures of Min Woo are assuredly not found. There are only such that gestures in scenes that Min Woo imagines or the room gets narrow. I of course think that they are his compulsion and expressed gestures. I acted these two features of him without thinking about anything else. No matter how cool-headed or self-confident people are, they‘ll possibly go mad, won’t they?

-스토리를 따라가는 영화에서 연기하는 것과 이미지를 표현하는 영화에서 연기하는 것은 큰 차이가 있는 것 같습니다. 스토리텔링을 위주로 하는 영화는 이야기의 진행에 따라 인물의 내면을 전달하는 방식으로 연기하면 되겠지만, 이 영화는 그렇게 할 수 없을 테니까요.

There seems many differences between story-based movies and images-depicted movies. If acting a man’s interior according to conventional method through the progress of conversations in a story-telling centralised movie, that would be okay but in what way/how this movie didn’t go on with that way?

“그렇습니다. 이야기를 따라가는 영화는 감정선을 그려나가는 게 아무래도 좀 쉽습니다. 시나리오 대로만 가면 되니까 편하죠. 그런데 연기를 하는 사람의 입장에선 후자가 더 흥미롭습니다.”

Yeah, that’s it. Story based movies are anyhow easy to deal with. It is quite comfortable because it’s okay if we just follow the scenario. However, situation action of other actors are more interesting.

-그런 연기는 사실 배우에게 위험할 수도 있다는 느낌입니다. 이야기 중심의 영화는 이야기의 흐름만 타고 가면 적어도 완전히 실패할 염려는 없죠. 하지만 이미지 중심의 영화는 배우의 표현 자체가 이뤄낼 수 있는 진폭이 워낙 크고, 기댈 수 있는 그 무엇도 없이 사실상 무에서 유를 창조하는 방식에 가깝게 만들어내야 하는 것이기 때문에, 성공했을 때의 짜릿한 희열과 극적으로 대비되는 처참한 실패도 가능해진다는 거죠.

Such acting trial frankly seems to cause danger to actors. If a conversation-based movies just make use of the flow of conversation, they at least donot completely end in failure. However, because we are to go well with the method that creates closely the existence from non-existence of reality, things that arenot able to lean against, and actors’ performance in images-based movies plays primary amplitude, pungent gladness would possibly turn into gruesome failure dramatically when it’s finished.

“그 점에 대해서는 저도 잘 모르겠습니다. 하지만 저는 배우가 실패했다면, 그건 흉내만 냈기 때문일 거라고 생각합니다. 인물을 자기 것으로 소화해서 진실되게 표현하면 반드시 성공할 거라고 믿어요. 이미지 위주의 영화라도, 만일 배우가 흉내를 내지 않고 자신의 것을 지켜낸다면 결국 배우는 남을 거라고 생각합니다.”

As to this point, I also don’t understand well. However, if i should fail in acting i would dedicate this to the imitation. I believe that if I absorb in the role’s personality and express truly, certainly I’ll succeed. I think of images-based movies that actors are the indigo after all provided that actors don’t imitate and they maintain confidence,

-극중에선 정훈희씨의 노래 ‘안개’가 여러 차례 흘러나옵니다. 강동원씨가 기타를 들고 직접 부르는 장면도 있죠. 최근 보아씨가 리메이크 하기도 했지만, 사실 이 노래는 강동원씨가 태어나기 훨씬 전에 나온 노래인데요(웃음), 그 노래를 부를 때 어떤 느낌이었습니까.

In the movie, Jeong Hoon Hee’s song ‘Angae’(Mist) flows out many sequences. Gang Dong Won ssi also hold another version and there is also a scene in which you sang. Boa ssi also remakes but to tell you the truth, the song came into being before you was born. (smile) what do you feel when you sing this song?

“이 노래가 그렇게 오래됐나요? 저는 영화를 찍으면서 처음 들었는데, 전혀 오래된 곡이라는 느낌이 안 들었어요. 이번에 보아씨가 리메이크한 게 너무 좋기도 했구요. 원래는 제가 직접 그 노래를 부르는 장면이 없었어요. 그런데, 촬영 중 감독님께서 어느날 갑자기 제게 이틀 후 기타치면서 이 노래를 하는 장면을 찍어야 한다는 거예요. 제가 기타를 못 치기에 큰 일 났다고 생각했어요. 결국 꼬박 하루 연습하고 그 장면을 찍었죠. 하루 한 것 치고는 나쁘지 않았던 것 같아 다행이었어요. 저는 그 노래를 특별히 감정을 싣지 않고 절제하면서 맑게 부르려고 했습니다. 그게 그 장면이나 제 느낌에 맞는 것 같았어요.”

This song was really that old-age? I first listened to the song while I was on filming, I did not feel entirely that this is the old music. This time, the remade song by Boa ssi was very well-done. Originally there was no scene of singing that song. Nonetheless, someday director suddently wanted the scene of singing to be finished after 2 days. I thought other big deal mustn’t take place childishly. After all, I practised nodding for a day and then filmed that scene. It’s lucky that one day practice did not do too bad to the scene.I didn’t have special feelings of that song and decided to sing it clearly. That appeared to fit my feeling or the scene.

-‘M’의 과거 장면들은 화면의 색조와 연기 방식에서 현재 장면들과 완전히 다른 느낌을 줍니다. ‘M’은 결국 과거의 첫사랑을 찾아가는 영화니까요. 연기자로서도 과거 장면들은 다른 마음가짐으로 찍으셨죠?

‘M’’s scenes in the past provide totally different feelings from present scenes due to acting method and screen’s shade. Because after all ‘M’ is the movie of recalling the deceased first love. The scenes of the past must have been filmed by different hearts-ease?

“네. 연기하는 느낌이 달랐어요. 민우가 현재는 성깔이 좀 있어도, 과거 만큼은 순수한 느낌이 있잖아요. 이를테면 ‘나, 아무 것도 몰라요’ 느낌이라고 할까요.(웃음)”

I felt quite different while acting. Min Woo has a bit sharp temper at the present, also his feelings were definitely as pure as in the past. In other words, that feeling is that ‘I, don’t anything at all’, is it?(smile)]

-‘오빠’보다는 ‘남동생’에 더 가까운 강동원씨의 이미지를 생각할 때, 딱 한 글자가 더 들어가면 완벽할 것 같습니다. 그건 ‘누나, (저는) 아무 것도 몰라요’의 느낌이죠.(웃음)

When I think of Gang Dong Won ssi’s image, you are as close as a ‘little brother’ other than ‘Oppa’, it seems to be perfect if exactly one more word is entered in. That is as follows ’ Nuna/sister, ( I ) don’t know anything.’ (smile)

“그런가요?(웃음) 그런데, 극중 미미 역으로 나오는 이연희씨도 그런 느낌을 주잖아요? 그러니 두 사람이 나오는 장면들은 ‘우린 아무 것도 몰라요’의 느낌이죠.(웃음)”

Really? (smile). If so, the heavy role Mimi starred by Lee Yeon hee ssi also gives us such feeling? So you two give the feeling that the scene is as ‘ we all don’t know anything’. (smile)

-연기에 대한 욕심이 무척 많은 것 같습니다. 본인의 출연작 외에 ‘저 영화에 출연했다면 어땠을까’라고 상상해본 작품이 있으신가요.

You are definitely to have a high desire for acting. In addition to movies that were shown already, do you ever imagine that ‘how would it be if I starred in that movie’?

“운이 좋게도 지금까진 제가 하고 싶은 작품들을 계속 할 수 있었던 것 같아요. 그런데, 요 근래에 그런 상상을 해본 작품이 하나 있었어요. 김지운 감독님이 찍고 있는 ‘좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈’이었습니다. 기회가 안 닿았지만, 참여했다면 무척 재미있었을 거란 생각을 해요.”

Fortunately, I so far am still able to continue with my favourable works. However, recently there was such a movie which I imagine to play in. That’s the movie ‘The good, the bad and the ideal’ by director Kim Ji Woon. The opportunities did not reach to me but if I participated in the movie, I think it would be completely interesting.

-올해로 스물여섯입니다. 스물여섯이란 나이에 대해서 어떻게 느끼십니까.

This year you’re 26 years old. What do you think about the age of 26?

“어, 저 스물일곱인데요.”

Oh, I am 27 already.

-만으로 스물여섯이란 거죠.(웃음)

I mean you’re full at 26. (smile)

“스물여섯이라고 하시니까, 괜히 기분이 좋아지는데요.(웃음)”

As it’s 26, I feel better without reason.(smile)

-그 웃음 속에 제 질문에 대한 대답이 이미 들어 있는 것도 같네요.(웃음)

It seems your answer includes many meanings due to your smile, (smile)

“이십대가 끝나가니까 살짝 씁쓸한 기분이 들어요. 저보다 나이가 많으신 분 앞에서 이런 말 해서 죄송합니다만.(웃음) 요즘 절실히 느끼는 것은 제가 애매한 시기에 있다는 겁니다. 일종의 과도기에 놓여 있는 듯해요. 서른으로 넘어가기 전, 소년에서 남자로 가고 있는 과도기의 느낌이랄까요. 제 스스로의 외모에서도 같은 느낌을 받고 있습니다.

Because my age of 20s is about over, I feel a bit bitterish. Older people said such those words to me, I just know to say sorry. (smile) Recently, I have acutely felt the vague time. It seems that is a kind of transition period. Before coming to 30s of age, shall I enjoy the upcoming transition period of a man’s youth. I myself also recognise the change in my exterior.

-외모가 어떻게 변하고 있는 것 같으신데요?

How would you like your appearance to become?

“말 그대로 애매하게 변하는 느낌이죠.(웃음) 저는 제 얼굴을 보고도 냉정하게 분석하는 편인데, 거울을 보고 있으면 정말 그런 생각이 들어요. 제가 요즘 운동을 못해서 상태가 좀 안 좋은 것 같기도 하구요.(웃음)

As I said, I fel the changes ambiguously. (smile) I see my face and analyse but if I am looking at the mirror, I will feel such that way. Recently I don’t play sport so my state doesnot seem good. (smile)

-강동원씨의 고향은 경남 창원입니다. 이미지에서는 ‘경상도 사나이’적인 느낌이 거의 없는데, 그런 강동원씨에게도 ‘경상도 사나이’적인 뭔가가 있겠죠?(웃음)

Gang Dong Won ssi’s hometown is Gyeongnam, Changwon. From your image, I almost don’t feel you of ‘a man of Gyeongsang-do’, to what extent you think you’ ‘a man of Kyeong seong-do’?

“많지는 않은 것 같아요. 연기 생활 하면서 많이 없어졌죠. 굳이 남아 있다면 제가 표현을 잘 못한다는 것을 들 수 있을 겁니다. 맘 속으론 고마워도 말로는 고마움을 잘 전하지 못하고, 칭찬에도 인색한 편이예요. 그런데 그것도 많이 바뀌었어요. 고맙다는 말도 많이 하고, 의도적으로 감정 표현도 적극적으로 하려고 하거든요.”

It seems not much. It became little due to showbiz activities. Positively in a manly manner, I could ever keep expressing not good things. Inside my heart, I am not able to say thanks and convey my gratitude very well, also there are stingy opportunities. However, those things has changed much. I intentionally express my emotions to say many thanks.

-영화에서는 특별히 그렇지 않지만, 이렇게 대화할 때는 살짝 사투리가 배어 있는 어투를 쓰십니다.

There are not much specially in your movies but in talks like this, you used your dialect softly .

“연기할 때는 쓰지 않지만, 평상시에는 조금씩 나오죠. 그런데 평소에는 그런 어투를 바꾸고 싶은 생각이 없어요. 좀 건방지게 들릴지도 모르겠지만, 저는 이런 제 말투가 좋거든요.(웃음)”

Although I don’t use during filming, I do it usually. Nonetheless, I don’t think of changing my dialect. I don’t know if this sounds a bit impertinent but I think my way of talking is good.(smile)

조인성, 강동원, 소지섭의 공통점은 뭘까? 얼짱, 몸짱에 강렬한 눈빛, 따뜻한 미소로 무장한 이들 완소남은 모두 모델 출신이라는 공통점이 있다. 이들 뿐만이 아니다. 유지태와 김남진, 차승원, 김민준, 오지호, 현빈, 공유, 이민기, 이천희 등 역시 모델 출신이다. 여자 연예인도 별개는 아니어서 공효진 김민희, 이요원, 김민선, 한지혜, 윤소이, 한예슬, 변정수, 최여진, 이기용, 이유진 등도 모델 출신이다.

Kang Dong-won: Introvert, Few Friends, First Love Revelation

[sina Entertainment 2007-10-15 11:27] Model turned actor Kang Dong-won is loved by audience for his handsome look and outstanding performances in works such as <Duelist>, <Voice of a Murderer>, <Our Happy Times / Maundy Thursday>. Returning to silver screen with new work <M> this year, he's recently interviewed by MyDaily.

Q: There was news of you being demanding, how do you feel when you see this type of news?

KDW: These news are no longer fresh, they're reported by various outlets. I didn't do the things reported; if I was wrong, I would apologize. Seeing these fabricated stories, I feel very upset. I am a type B so I would always remember these things in my heart (smile)....

Q: You didn't appear at any public event for the entire year. This year's PIFF is your 1st public outing in 1 year, therefore, some news reports added you to "mysterious star" list. What do you think about this news?

KDW: Maybe I am not good at expressing my thoughts in front of others. I also don't like to show myself in public so I don't really like going to award shows or other public activities. The red carpet looks too long to me, I also don't know which type of expression I should show there; plus, I also don't know what to say/do to those who look at me. Promotional activities for a movie feel more tiring than the filming process to me. I wasn't able to sleep the night before a movie press conference because I was too nervous. Maybe I am an introvert so I only have several good friends - Won Bin, Gong Yoo, Jung Joon.

Q: While filming <Our Happy Times / Maundy Thursday>, you said "don't feel that I'm good looking." -- This created a very big topic, what was the situation at that time?

KDW: Actually I meant to say (at that time) "As a result of portraying a death row prisoner now, my hair was shortened and I also became skinnier; I felt that I don't look as good as before when I saw myself in the mirror." I didn't think that it would turn out that way; I wanted to clarify but I wasn't clear. I really felt a bit unjustified/misunderstood (smile).

Q: Regarding physical appearance questions, do you feel burden when you answer them?

KDW: No, but reporters always ask me about "appearance and performing skill" "flower pretty male" (a man who is very beautiful) in every production announcement. As an actor, I hope to hear 'actor' Kang Dong-won more than 'flower pretty male' label.

Q: This new film <M> is a story about first love, can you talk about how you were during your first true love?

KDW: My first love was simply one sided-thought. I remember being in 1~2 grade high school then, our situation weren't too well so wasn't able to confess feelings. When she and I left school one day, I don't know why I had "really finished this time" feeling; it was just raining, I still remember clearly the feeling at that moment. Seems like women can forget the past easily when they have a new love/affection, men are not like that.

Q: It's been 10 years, do you still feel painful now?

KDW: Not anymore, I would smile when I look back on it (the beautiful memory) now. She and I kept in touch several years ago, but we lost contact now.

Q: You and director Lee Myung-se cooperated twice, can you talk about the filming process of <Duelist> and <M>?

KDW: When director Lee Myung-se prepared filming <Duelist>, he contacted me several times about joining the cast. I wanted to see the script beforehand, but the director suggested meeting before discussing the script; this might have to do with director Lee Myung-se's management style from the 19th century (smile). He probably felt that he wasn't able to win me over so he let me see the script of <Duelist>. When I read the script, I felt that I would definitely regret later if I don't star in it. I immediately accepted director Lee Myung-se's invitation.

Q: Would this be interpreted as you were being demanding?

KDW: Comparing to demanding, I feel that (as an actor) I need to know the director's style first before deciding whether to work together. Reading the script is the simplest way to understand the director's style; to others, I can be overly picky on unnecessary areas but I feel that insistence on my own principle is a must. As for <M>, director Lee Myung-se actually gave me a total of 3 scripts. My first impression was that the other 2, along with <M>, were pretty good too (smile). Didn't think that <M> was chosen at the end, it feels really interesting now.

Q: Even though you don't have 100% confidence toward <M>, why did you decide to star in <M>?

KDW: First off, working with director Lee Myung-se is a very interesting matter. He has unusual ideas, I feel that he and I are very similar in this aspect.

Q: While filming <M>, what's the most memorable thing/event?

KDW: Having to change my own dialect voice. Director asked that I used Seoul accent in the film; I live in Pusan for nearly 20 years, trying not to say it all of a sudden was really difficult. When I first started with Seoul accent, I felt like I was learning a foreign language. I used Seoul accent in <Voice of a Murderer> before, but there were only several phrases then. This is the first time where I had to use Seoul accent entirely for <M>. In addition, I tried different ways of acting from before. For example, .... to reveal the feeling and behavior of the leading role. The plot of <M> is somewhat fuzzy, therefore, (as an actor) I had to have a more complete understanding of the story. A lot of time/work was spent on reading the script.

Q: How do you feel after seeing the completed <M>?

KDW: While filming, I would often feel "this way of shooting would have meaning?" After seeing the completed version, I finally understood the director's intention and felt that he's really amazing. Even if the box office doesn't turn out good, I wouldn't regret being able to appear in this movie.

Q: In <M>, you worked with 2 actresses Kong Hyo-jin and Lee Yeon-hee. Any comments on them?

KDW: Kong Hyo-jin's very kind to others, she makes them feel at ease; I felt at ease working with her. Lee Yeon-hee gave me the impression that can she can project the character's perfect image no matter what role she's given; she is a ? actress.
