Shinhwa sells out reunion concerts

qpmhkl.jpg

Boy band remains hot ticket 14 years after debut

By Kwaak Je-yup

As the years go by, even the hottest teen idols often disappear into oblivion and make room for the younger generation to bask in the limelight. But one group in Korea has managed to stay relevant and even wildly popular ― 14 years after their debut.

Shinhwa, the longest-running boy band in the country, sold out its two-night concert series “THE RETURN” 40 minutes after tickets went on sale at 8 p.m. Monday, the group’s management announced the morning after.

The performances are scheduled for March 24 and 25 at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena at the Olympic Park, Bangi-dong, at the southeastern edge of Seoul.

“We are grateful to our fans. Thanks to them, we can ensure Shinhwa’s comeback after four years will be celebrated in style,” said Eric Mun, leader of the band in a statement. “We are working on a great performance for the fans who have stuck with us for so long.”

As a concert venue, the arena is the largest in the country, with a typical capacity of around 15,000. While the organizers led by CJ E&M opted for less at 10,000 tickets per night, selling out in such a short period is still no mean feat ― especially with the overabundance of pop concerts in recent months.

Arguably the most influential and popular boy band at the turn of the millennium, Shinhwa can continue to bank on future success, as the key demographic for their concerts are still in their 20s. According to statistics from Interpark, the sole distributor for the two-night affair, 73.6 percent of all ticket buyers were aged 20 to 29, with those in their 30s trailing far behind at 12.2 percent. The 40-somethings bought 10.2 percent of the tickets, while the rest, 4.1 percent, were snapped up by teenagers.

Women far outnumbered men at roughly nine to one.

Steeply priced at 66,000 to 143,000 won, “THE RETURN” tickets are already being illegally traded online, fetching even higher prices. CJ E&M and Shinhwa Company, which oversee the six members’ activities, said they are investigating this practice. More tickets may become available if those conducting unauthorized resales are caught and forced to return them.

Since 2003, Mun, Lee Min-woo, Kim Dong-wan, Shin Hye-sung, Jun Jin and Andy Lee, have pursued solo careers ranging from theater to film and television on top of music. Mired in a legal battle with their original management agency and industry stalwart SM Entertainment over trademark rights of the group’s name, Shinwha had no choice but to explore other options at the time.

The court ruled in the group’s favor the following year, and the members signed with Good Entertainment. In 2007, the members started their own management firms to shape their own paths with mixed success. Their chart performances as solo acts have yet to match those recorded as the original ensemble.

The six members perform together periodically, with organization and finances overseen by Shinhwa Company. Mun and Lee Min-woo are co-chairmen.

The group has undergone a forced and elongated hiatus, as members were required to do their national service. Last time they performed with the entire line-up was four years ago, for a 10-year anniversary concert. The end of March was chosen for this year, in order to see Lee Min-woo’s discharged from the Army. He is the last of the six to fulfill his military obligation.

Their 10th as-yet-untitled album was supposed to be pushed at the same time, but the release date has not been fixed.

“The members are working on an album project, but no date has been set,” said a spokeswoman of Mun’s agency Top Class Entertainment. “Details are still to be ironed out.”

Shinhwa made their debut in 1998 and counts dozens of hits, including “T.O.P. (Twinkling of Paradise),” “Only One,” “Perfect Man,” “Brand News,” “Once in a Lifetime.”

They are often cited as one of the pioneers of the Korean wave, or hallyu, with a wide fan base across North and Southeast Asia and have recorded sales in the millions.

Shinhwa shows their support for Stellar

O58Li.jpg

ookie girl group Stellar has been gaining a lot of moral support from their sunbaes, Shinhwa.

Stellar was produced by Shinhwa member Eric, and they debuted in August of 2011 with “Rocket Girl“. Since then, they’ve recruited two new members (Hyo Eun and Minhee), and returned with their second single, “UFO“.

The girls had a bit of a rocky start to their comeback due to a wardrobe controversy, but they’ve been receiving moral support from Eric’s groupmates, Jun Jin and Kim Dong Wan. Jun Jin helped the girls by cameoing in their latest music video, while Kim Dong Wan sent them a video message.

In his video message, Kim Dong Wan congratulated Stellar on their second single, and told them that when he was watching them rehearse, they left a favorable impression with their hard work ethic and pretty looks.

Reportedly, Shinhwa and Stellar share the same practice rooms, so the sunbaes try to give encouraging advice to the girls whenever they can.

[12.02.23] Shinhwa, One Month Prior to Comeback Concert

PP12021400052.JPG

The word "Reunion" does not seem right.

Comeback concert is just a month away. And Shinhwa group goes to the practice room to shed sweat before dawn each day. Shinhwa leader Eric met with NewsIn and said, "Members of Shinhwa have been going to the studio near Gangnam area for a month preparing for the comeback concert". Eric followed, "We are far from disbanding so the word reunion does not fit. Shinhwa has been able to stay together for 14 years without ever disbanding".

Shinhwa members were worried before the comeback. It has been 14 years, and the longest idol group but that 'honor' leads to concerns. Fortunately 20,000 seats were sold out within 40 minutes for the 2 shows. Eric added, "Frankly speaking, we were worried there would be a lot of empty seats'', but "Shinhwa have grown along with fans so their encouragement have lift us again".

Shinhwa will make a comeback with a concert titled, 'GRAND TOUR IN SEOUL' on March 24 - 25 at the Seoul Olympic Park Stadium. Four years ago on their 10th Anniversary concert, Shinhwa made a promise in front of their fans "We will be back soon'', making March 24, 1998 a very special date because it marks the date of their debut.

Shinhwa will make their official comeback after member Lee Min Woo is released from military service in March 2.

[12.02.26] Shinhwa’s comeback style concept – Simple yet luxurious

Shinhwa is back. The 6 stylish guys. As veterans of the K-pop industry now, in what manner will they present themselves to stir the fans’ hearts? Although we’re curious about their title track, we’re also curious about what kind of dazzling stage costumes and style they will strut around the stage in.

“Shinhwa in the past used to be dressed in idol-style stage costumes, and now everyone knows of Shinhwa. Now they are the godfathers of the K-pop scene. So their overall concept will be a combination of simplicity and luxury.” Stylist Park Ji-young, who is overseeing the styling for Shinhwa’s comeback, explains Shinhwa’s overall simple yet luxurious concept.

She adds, “Shinhwa doesn’t need to be dressed in flamboyant stage costumes like other idols. Because the group Shinhwa itself, the members themselves are glamorous, so they don’t have to adopt a concept of bling-bling stage costumes.”

Ms Park, together with G.I.L Homme designer Seo Eun Gil, will be personally designing the costumes for Shinhwa’s comeback. She said, “The stylist usually picks the fabric and directly starts on production but there are limitations to that so I’m working with designer Seo Eun Gil (G.I.L. HOMME). I made my request to him and he was happy to agree.”

She expressed, “We’ll be trying out different treatments on the fabric, such as (color) gradation or dyeing, to create a unique style for Shinhwa to show off.”

Shinhwa will be making their comeback this coming March, in conjunction with their 14th anniversary. The group is making their official comeback after 4 years due to the members having to serve military duty. Shinhwa, whose members have set up Shinhwa Company and are preparing to meet their fans, will be holding their comeback concert ‘The Return’ at the Olympic Park Gymnastics Arena on 24/25 March.

[12.02.26] Shinhwa decides on title track for their 10th album after much deliberation

IE001406700_STD.jpg

Shinhwa returns after 4 years

Shinhwa is returning in time for their 14th anniversary. With Lee Minwoo concluding his military service on 2 March, he will rejoin his fellow members at the official press conference, kicking off their comeback activities into full gear. Let’s take a look at their preparations for their comeback, which is drawing near.

Choi Byung Jin, CEO of Eric’s management company Top Class Entertainment and director of Shinhwa Company, told OhmyStar on 24 Feb in a phone conversation, “We’re working towards the target of releasing the 10th album on 20th March. The title track has also recently been decided on.”

CEO Choi added that Shinhwa completed their album jacket photoshoot last week. “The test shoot has been done, depending on how the photos turn out we may have another photo shoot.”

Shinhwa’s 10th album comes four years after their 9th album released in 2008. This album consists of 10-11 songs. Now about 70% of the production work for the album has been done. CEO Choi said, “We went through much deliberation in choosing the title track. We should be releasing the album on the 20th before holding the concert on 24/25 March.”

Shinhwa will not only appear on various music programs but will also appear on variety programs as part of their extensive promotional activities.

CEO Choi said, “Although Shinhwa released 2 albums after 2006, but because the members all belonged to different management agencies so there were no large-scale activities. They will be appearing on variety shows after 5 years. They will be making a fair amount of appearances on variety shows and will also be appearing on music programs for more than a month. The focus will be on ‘Shinhwa’s Comeback’.”

Meanwhile, Shinhwa will be holding their comeback press conference on 5 March at CGV Cheongdam in Seoul.

[12.02.26] Shinhwa “doesn’t play games with fans’ hearts”

Shinhwa’s emotional comeback – what are the 3 secrets to Shinhwa’s longevity?

People usually turn their eyes to instant glory rather than pure honesty. Just like how we go crazy over home runs rather than stolen bases and base hits.

But rather than a brilliant play of the moment, what truly touches our hearts is steadfast persistence. Like the sense of awe that Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds made the fans feel with his record 3,562nd game appearance. In this aspect, there are no idol groups in Korea with such moving persistence and honesty. Firstly they can’t be sustained for long.

Groundbreaking singing abilities for that day and age; the originator of Big Bang’s rotation system

In this sense, the comeback of ‘longevity idols’ Shinhwa, celebrating their 14th anniversary this year, is moving in itself. Because in Korea’s music scene, where countless idol groups have come and gone within short periods of time, they have demonstrated that ‘sustainable idols’ are a possibility. Given that idol groups like g.o.d, S.E.S, Fin.K.L – who made their debut around the same period – have already disbanded, one can tell by the long period of time that they have existed and the amount of love they have received from fans.

The reasons for their consistent popularity lie in the individual members’ excellent singing abilities and star qualities. One can say that these are basic or that these are generalizations but that’s not the case.

The fact that the members have solo-worthy singing abilities was something very groundbreaking back in those days. At that time, idol groups mostly passed musical duties to the lead vocalist with the singing ability. The member who could sing became the lead vocalist, while the member who couldn’t would become the rapper and sub-vocalist – it was a period when this was the norm.

As such, it was possible for Shinhwa to market themselves differently from other typical groups. The members individually released solo albums and participated in unit activities and eventually regrouped to release group albums. The rotation system in soccer was in implementation. Just like Big Bang now.

Their rotation strategy broke the longstanding industry standard of going on hiatus after album promotions concluded. Capitalizing on the voids left by other singers who were on hiatus, they began to gather more popularity. In fact the members all have released at least two solo albums. (note: not ALL actually – Eric hasn’t released anything remotely resembling an album yet) Especially Shin Hyesung and Lee Minwoo who have released at least 6 albums each and have received much love.

At the same time, they made use of their variety skills and acting skills in their time outside of music activities to gain more popularity. Junjin became the 7th member of ‘Infinity Challenge’; Andy received rave reviews for ‘We Got Married’; Eric took on acting with a successful debut in 2004′s ‘Phoenix’, and went on to be the leading man of dramas such as ‘Super Rookie’ and ‘Spy Myungwol’.

Change of thinking in overcoming the disbandment crisis and ‘fandom’

If innovative marketing and the members’ outstanding abilities made Shinhwa what they are today, then the strong trust between Shinhwa and their fans is the secret to their longevity.

When their contract with their management company ended in 2003, the conflict between members who received renewal offers and members who didn’t, resulted in a disbandment crisis. In the moment of crisis, rather than to get hung up over the contents of the contract, the 6 members all chose to move to a new management company.

After that they set up Shinhwa Company to continue Shinhwa’s group activities. This is a company set up to prevent the possible disbandment of the group when members sign up with different management companies after their contract with Good Entertainment ran out. Through this decision, they lived up to the promise they made to the fans who said that they’ll watch over Shinhwa. And they’ve earned the infinite trust from the fans, that’s no amount of money can buy.

Looking at Shinhwa returning after 4 years, attention will naturally fall on one area – the idol groups that have ambiguously halted their activities and are technically disbanded. The members all belong to different companies and are unlikely to reunite or show no signs of reuniting, but they refuse to officially declare their disbandment and refuse to let go of their fans.

The important basic of not playing with the fans’ hearts

Even though it may not be as many people as before, but there are still fans who love the group as a group. For the fans who love the group, watching the members in their individual activities can make them feel the cruel wait even more. To the fans who like the group and not the individual members, hope can be a torture.

In this sense, the implication of Shinhwa’s comeback is huge. Because it shows us how much stronger the relationship between the singer and the fans will become when a promise made with the fans is realized. Like how the food industry doesn’t mess with food, in the music industry it must be reminded that it’s a basic not to play games with fans’ hearts.

[12.02.27] Summarizing Shinhwa’s 14 years in one page

abs_ie001406674_std.png

The chronicles of 6-member group Shinhwa who made their debut on 24 March 1998 (excluding individual activities). The events listed in the left panel charts the changes in media that influenced fans' activities and the changes in the boy group scene.

Fans who have liked Shinhwa since 1998 must be feeling that these are very different times. During the long period of 14 years, fan culture has changed as much as the world itself.

It seems like just yesterday when high speed internet was not yet readily available, and we had to connect to the fanclubs on PC communication networks via phone line dial-up without our parents knowing, and then having to worry more about the phone bill than our results. Now it only takes one click to see all the updates and photos of the members, and also interact with other fans.

Who could have imagined Flash images and animations? We just recorded shows on video tapes and repeatedly watched our favorite scenes. In place of the magazines and newspapers that occupied a corner of our rooms, we now have scans that can be saved and filed neatly, with no danger of being thrown out as wastepaper.

Times are changing, and so are the fans’ loyalties. But it’s the memories and sentiments from these 14 years that are most important. We’ve summarized those memories in one page. Let’s fill in the little gaps here and there together. Individual activities are not included. If we put those in too, we might as well publish ‘The History of Shinhwa’.

The boy groups that dominated the 90s together with them have disappeared, and they’ve survived disbandment rumors and military service. Before we knew it, the world now has kids younger than Shinhwa by 12 years who have debuted as idols. But well, is that important? The group still has 6 members, and they’re still Shinhwa. Like this, let’s walk towards the members’ 60th birthday banquets and dinner show then.

With Shinhwa’s Lee Minwoo getting discharged from military service on 2 March, Shinhwa’s comeback project will officially begin.

Once Lee Minwoo is discharged from military service on 2 March, preparations for Shinhwa’s comeback press conference will get underway. He will attend Shinhwa’s 14th anniversary commemorative press conference, which will be held on 5th March at 3pm, at CGV Cheongdam in Seoul. With Lee Minwoo completing his military service, it will be Shinhwa’s first official post-discharge appearance with all the members present. The event will also be streamed live online to 200 countries worldwide.

In addition, Shinhwa will be finding their way to the fans with their concert and the album at almost the same time. Firstly, Shinhwa will be holding their 14th anniversary concert ‘The Return’ at the Olympic Park Gymnastics Arena on 24/25 March, and they will be releasing their new album a little before the concert.

201202271457776239_1.jpg

A rep for Shinhwa said, “We have not confirmed it yet, but the new album should be released before the concert.”

Meanwhile, Lee Minwoo started his stint as a public service officer at Seoul Station in February 2010. His fellow members have been active in their respective fields – Eric and Kim Dongwan have been involved in acting projects; Shin Hyesung has been busy with his solo project and Andy has been taking on the role of producer for idol group Teen Top.

[12.02.27] A very special chat about Shinhwa Pt 1 – “Shinhwa will be able to hold a dinner show”

Do you know about the ‘Orange Princesses’? Alluding to the representative color of Shinhwa’s official fanclub Shinhwa Changjo, orange, this is how the fans are referred to. Following Shinhwa’s return after 4 years, ‘Orange Princesses’ scattered everywhere have once again started to move into action.

During the past 2 months, OhMyStar has been holding chat sessions in a cafe in Gangnam with 5 formidable ‘Orange Princesses’, who have been fans for more than 10 years. As per the request of these ladies, their names will not be mentioned. They’ll simply be referred to as ‘Female #1′, ‘Female #2′ etc, and only details like their ages, occupations, when they became fans, will be revealed.

Female #1: Mid-30s / Freelance university lecturer / 1999 / Runs a fanpage

Female #2: Late 20s / Barista / 1998 / Runs a fanpage

Female #3: Mid-30s / Freelance designer / 1999

Female #4: Early 40s / Teacher / 1999

Female #5: Early 40s / Homemaker / 2001

IE001406699_STD.jpg

The group Shinhwa is back. It has already been 4 years since their 10th anniversary concert where they promised their fans to meet again. To be precise, 4 years later, Shinhwa will kick off their comeback with their 14th anniversary concert.

With the exception of Shin Hyesung and Kim Dongwan, the other members are signed to separate management companies. Although everyone has unabated trust in Shinhwa, they worry about whether there will be obstacles not within their control along the way. But Shinhwa did not let their fans down. Exceeding the expectation of making their comeback in time for their 15th anniversary concert, Shinhwa has made it back a year earlier.

- Didn’t you worry about whether they would get together again?

Female #1: To start with, the members are very reliable. I’ve never been worried about them being in different agencies. They’re the type who will leave the company if the company isn’t doing well. (laughs)

Female #5: Didn’t they already say that they will regroup even in other forms?

The news of the 2-day concert on 24/25 March has already spread. The fans who have stuck with Shinhwa for more than 10 years are preparing themselves for the concert. Some have even applied for leave for the day after the concert.

“Sasaeng fans (obsessive fans who stalk and invade the privacy of celebrities)? We didn’t even think about it then”

- The idol fandom back then is very different from the idol fandom of today.

Female #4: The inclinations of fans back then and fans today are very different. Compared to fans back then, there are many more older fans now. In Shinhwa’s case, their fans grew up naturally with them.

Female #1: Shinhwa has more younger fans than I thought. There’s this type of people, they like singers but don’t want to only like idols like their peers, these are kids who are more mature in their thinking.

Female #2: The more serious ones?

All: That’s right, that’s right.

- ‘Sasaeng fans’ who invade the private lives of stars are becoming a social issue too. How are they different from the fans in the early 2000s who stayed overnight in front of the idols’ dormitory?

Female #2: At least we toed the line back then. We protected the members’ private lives.

Female #1: Back then it was a case of ‘the oppas are God’ so we were scared of them. We staked out in front of the dormitory but once Kim Dongwan appeared we all ran away. He opened the window and shouted at the fans, ‘why aren’t you going?’ (laughs) Lately the sasaeng fans are more like stalkers than fans.

Female #4: At least we didn’t try to teach the oppas what to do. Lately the fans are exercising a lot of influence and they seem to feel a sense of superiority.

Female #1: Celebrities have to be thankful to fans too. Honestly speaking the fandom of today shocks me. They have evolved a lot.

“SHINee’s ‘Wild Eyes’ left the deepest impression”

- Many younger singers have performed Shinhwa’s songs. If you have to pick the best performance of the lot?

Female #1: SHINee did well. More than anything SHINee is under SM Entertainment. Shinhwa is a group that came from SM too so it’s in a way a meaningful performance. SM’s new group re-enacting a song from a group that came out of SM. ‘Wild Eyes’ is a powerful song and they did it better than I expected.

Female #4: Indeed there’s no one who does it better than the original.

Female #5: Shinhwa performed this dance in their mid-20s, it seems that even younger idols now can’t compete.

Female #3: Shinhwa already had a manly feel to them when they were in their early 20s.

Female #1: Lately there are many noona fans so there’s more of acting cute.

- For their comeback there’ll be plenty of promotional activities. What are you most looking forward to?

Female #1: I’m looking forward to their stage performances, their album, and their ENG filming (e.g news/interview segments). It’ll be great if they can appear on programs like ‘Running Man’.

Female #2: Won’t they get exhausted within half a day? (laughs) I hope they can appear on ‘Infinity Challenge’ again.

Female #4: We can’t leave out the Tray Noraebang segment of ‘Happy Together’ too.

Hopes for the returning ‘Shinhwa’ – “In good health, and in style”

- Is there anything you hope for the returning Shinhwa?

Female #1: I hope they return in good health, and embark on their activities in style. Because Shinhwa is still alive. I hope they will enjoy themselves, just like before. And don’t get affected by the young kids.

Female #4: I hope they don’t get injured and stay healthy. More than anything else I hope the members enjoy themselves. The fans will only enjoy themselves if the members enjoy themselves.

- For how long more do you think Shinhwa can stay active?

Female #2: Until they can hold a dinner show? (laughs) Will they still be so playful then? I’m most worried about the members’ stamina. (note: usually older singers/entertainers hold dinner shows)

Female #1: They’ve passed the crisis and the difficult moments, didn’t they. So I think they’ll go on for a long time.

Female #4: Their bond won’t disappear even as they work on their individual activities. I think it will be good if they can go about their individual activities and then gather for group activities under the name of Shinhwa. All this can happen as long as they don’t disband, isn’t it?

[12.02.27] ShinCom Twitter update: Minwoo’s discharge time and location

[이민우MinWoo] 3월2일(금) am 9:30 소집해제/ 장소: 서울역 후문_소화 아동 병원 건너편_GS25시 편의점 뒤_주차장

I'm happy with the concept of simply yet luxury but I hope the designer could add some flares to it since 'suits' could be a bit blanch & boring XDDD

Here is the designer homepage so you can have a feel of what to come. Really hope he'll jazz it up a little XD http://www.gilhomme.com/2010/mainot.htm

So the important dates are:

MAR.02: Minwoo's discharge

MAR.05: Shinhwa Official LIVE Press Conference on Mnet | Mnet Global | TVing

MAR.20: 10th release (subject to changes)

MAR.24 & 25: The Return concerts
