‘#Alive’ Is Your Typical Zombie Film: A Review

by Myla Torres-EderSeptember 13, 2020

“#Alive” has been topping the Netflix chart in the Philippines, and here’s our review of the latest Korean zombie hit.

The Plot

The film stars Yoo Ah-in as Oh Joon-woo, a gamer who struggles to stay alive after a zombie outbreak. Park Shin-hye is Kim Yoo-bin, a tenant who lives across Oh Joon-woo.

The movie goes straight to the point as it shows how tenants in a compound are attacked by zombies. Oh Joon-woo is alone in his house while his family is out. He sees what’s happening outside and he locks himself up. He tries to get through with scarce food and water after receiving a message from his family telling him to survive. However, days have passed and still there’s no rescue in sight. As Oh Joon-woo contemplates on taking his own life, he meets Kim Yoo-bin. The two come up with a plan to survive.

Surviving an Outbreak

Just like other zombie outbreak films or TV series, it’s all about the thrill of the chase. “#Alive” delivers in that aspect, with the two leads barely escaping the undead.

Yoo Ah-in gives a believable performance of a young man challenged physically and psychologically by his self-imposed lockdown. In the presence of an outbreak, the mental challenges sometimes outweigh the physical ones. Most of us have experienced this during this time of pandemic.

Zombie Apocalypse in the Age of Social Media

If you’re someone who believes that a zombie apocalypse is in the horizon, “#Alive” is like an instructional video on how to survive. Technology and resourcefulness might just be the key to stay alive.

Just like food and water, communication is as important in a zombie attack. In the film, survivors had to tag themselves “alive” on social media as they await rescue. In Oh Joon-woo’s case, his game streaming channel helped him to connect with the rest of the world and kept him sane during his ordeal.

Just Another Zombie Movie

However thrilling this movie is, “#Alive” pales in comparison to its Korean zombie film predecessor “Train To Busan” or the zombie slash period drama “Kingdom.” There is no explanation whatsoever of how the infection started, which leaves us to think that the writers might be setting up a sequel.

If you’re a fan of this horror genre, you might find #Alive a rehash of sorts. It might even remind you of the Filipino zombie film “Block Z,” especially towards the end as the two leads battle it out with the undead.

Our honest review is that while “#Alive” is an enjoyable watch, that is all there is to it. We’re not mad though as it offers a thrilling distraction from the anxiety during this pandemic.

“#Alive” is now streaming on Netflix.

Boho Style from K-Drama MEMORIES OF THE ALHAMBRA

With summer approaching (*ominous thunder sound*), it’s finally time to write about this K-Drama! Memories of the Alhambra premiered on tvN on December 1, 2018, and is currently available on Netflix. This 16-episode fantasy drama is about an AR game that turns deadly. In addition to an engaging story with details that only gamers can relate to, the drama also boasts stunning CG, fierce battling from Hyun Bin, and picturesque sceneries of Spain. What’s not to love?

The screenplay is written by Song Jae-jung so you can expect a roller coaster ride. Yoo Jin-woo (played by Hyun Bin) is the CEO of J-One Holdings, a company that creates smart contact lenses for AR. He travels to Granada to meet the creator (EXO’s Park Chan-yeol) of a groundbreaking AR game, but is haunted by non-player characters (NPC) that threaten his real life. He must work with the missing creator’s sister Hee-ju (Park Shin-hye) to solve the mystery.

This drama is more of a bromance than a romance as it mainly focuses on how Jin-woo’s closest acquaintances turn against him. Park Shin-hye is, nonetheless, too pretty to be missed. Her boho outfits in the first seven episodes are worth borrowing if you’re planning a summer vacation, and her gypsy look as the NPC Emma is breathtaking. Everything in the drama may be an illusion, but Park Shin-hye’s beauty is for real!

Longline Shirts

Spoiler

alhambra_b.webp

When she is the hostess of Bonita Hostel, Hee-ju wears plenty of longline shirts, either by themselves or as light cover-up over short-sleeve tees. She wears a teal and red shirtdress when she first meets Jin-woo. She also dons several longline shirts and midi shirtdresses in monochrome, checks or stripes during her time in Granada. These are often matched with skinny jeans and loafers or espadrilles.

This look is a failsafe vacay combo when you’re heading for somewhere warm. The set keeps you cozy without exposing too much skin so you’re protected from the sun and insect bites. Some churches and temples also require you to dress in clothing that covers your arms and legs, and that’s when the shirts and skinnies come into play.

Peasant Blouses

alhambra_c.webp

When Hee-ju’s not in longline shirts, she wears embroidered peasant blouses that suit her role as the Cinderella of the story. Often crafted from breezy linen blends, these blouses are a heaven-sent during the hottest of days. Hee-ju’s blouses are often embroidered with tiny patterns and finished with a drawcord or scalloped neckline, making her look even more ethereal.

Loafers & Espadrilles

Spoiler

alhambra_d.webp

Hee-ju usually wears raffia-colored embroidered espadrilles or a white pair of buckled loafers. As a part-time tour guide, she has to walk quite a lot so comfort is key. She puts slippers on when at her hostel.

Flouncy Dresses

alhambra_e.webp

There aren’t a lot of scenes where Hee-ju wears fancy dresses, but when she does, she slays. For Hee-ju’s 27th birthday, she dresses herself up in a ruffled lavender dress, matched with white heels and a white strap watch that complete the look in a clean palette. She wears a surplice wrap floral dress in the last episode, and a ruffled chiffon dress in the drama’s poster.

Boho Dresses

Emma, the NPC that looks exactly like Hee-ju, is dressed in a shirred white blouse with tiers of ruffles over the flared sleeves, coupled with a voluminous maxi red skirt, a foliage-print waist band and a lace red veil. She also appears in different outfits designed by J-One, including a white lace dress, a sexy black dress and a glittery evening dress with a veil.

Hand Chains

Spoiler

alhambra_g.webp

Denoting protection, the hand of Fatima (hamsa in Arabic) plays a crucial role in the story. It’s the inspo of Emma’s red spinel hand chain. This might be a bit off-topic but Scarlett Johansson also wore a hand chain with Infinity Stones at Avengers: Endgame’s premiere and it stole the show. So yes, magical hand chains are a girl’s best friend!

Chandelier Earrings

Spoiler

alhambra_h.webp

Jin-woo gives Hee-ju Swarovski butterfly-knot dangle earrings for her 28th birthday, but it’s Emma’s pair of chandelier earrings that truly stands out in the drama. Accented with red and white rhinestones and pearls, the bejeweled filigree earrings are reminiscent of the Arabesque decorations in the Palace of Alhambra (alhambra means “the red one” in Arabic).

Mamonde Makeup

Spoiler

alhambra_i.webp

You can’t escape product placements in K-Dramas, and this one is no exception. Hee-ju uses Mamonde’s Creamy Tint Color Balm Intense (#24 Nectar Coral) and cushion foundation on her 27th birthday, and the Creamy Tint Squeeze Lip (#3 Chic Red) for her date with Jin-woo a year later.

Kdramas that Deal with Mental Health

Flower Boy Next Door Kdramas social anxiety issues

1. “Flower Boy Next Door”

  • Aired: 2013
  • Episodes: 16
  • Director: Jung Jung Hwa
  • Screenwriter: Kim Eun Jung

“Flower Boy Next Door” follows the story of Go Dok Mi (Park Shin Hye), a “city Rapunzel” who almost never leaves her house. She is an introverted girl who struggles with her social anxiety. But one day, a man named Enrique Geum (Yoon Shi Yoon) catches her spying on her next-door neighbor. Things get pretty awkward, but then they develop some serious feelings for each other.

This is one of many Kdramas that shows how opposites do indeed attract. Seeing how Dok Mi challenges herself to come out of her ‘castle’ and deal with her anxiety gives us the courage. Everyone has some baggage to overcome in order to heal.
