 by Riya Sharma

in Movie

The Call is a 2020 South Korean thriller film directed by Lee Chung-hyun and starring Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo. Based on the 2011 British-Puerto Rican film The Caller, The Call revolves around Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) and Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo), two women from different eras who connect through a phone call that exchange their fates.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in theaters but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was released on Netflix globally on November 27, 2020. Now, know about The Call.

The Call: Movie Synopsis

In 2019, 28-year-old Kim Seo-yeon loses her cell phone while traveling to visit her sick, estranged mother in the countryside. When he arrives at his dilapidated childhood home, he finds a decades-old cordless phone and uses it to receive calls from a distressed woman who says she is being abused by her mother.

After exploring the house, Seo-yeon discovers that the woman on the phone, Oh Young-sook, lives in the same house but in 1999. The two are able to communicate in time through the phone and exchange information about their lives. . Young-sook is orphaned and lives with her adoptive mother, who is a shaman, while Seo-yeon lost her father in a fire that she blames on her mother, Eun-ae.

Young-sook, acting on information from Seo-yeon, sneaks out of the house to prevent the fire that killed Seo-yeon’s father. She is successful, and Seo-yeon’s reality changes: her parents are alive and well, and their house is lavish. However, Young-sook is punished by her mother and becomes upset that Seo-yeon’s life has improved while hers is the same.

Seo-yeon searches the internet and learns that Young-sook was killed by her mother during an exorcism. During another phone call, Seo-yeon warns Young-sook, who saves herself and kills her mother instead. Now freed, Young-sook becomes a serial killer. Seo-yeon realizes what happened when Young-sook’s victims disappear in the present. During the phone call, Seo-yeon confronts Young-sook, but inadvertently reveals that she will be arrested.

In 1999, Young-sook is visited by 8-year-old Seo-yeon and her father, who have come to the house to close on their purchase. Young-sook kills Seo-yeon’s father and takes young Seo-yeon captive. In 2019, Seo-yeon’s reality changes again: her father is dead and the house is in even worse shape. Young-sook calls Seo-yeon and tells her to find out how she will be arrested. Seo-yeon first gives Young-sook false information, but when Young-sook subsequently threatens to kill Eun-ae, Seo-yeon breaks into the local police station for the laptop used in 1999. Young-sook taunts Seo-yeon, that They’re the same when he reveals that Seo-yeon caused the fire that originally killed her father and lied about Eun-ae’s fault.

Seo-yeon gives Young-sook the right information, and her reality changes again: the house is now owned by the elderly Young-sook, who continues as a serial killer. The contents of the notebook also change, noting that Eun-ae came to the house with a police officer and called the cordless phone. Seo-yeon waits at the house for the call and uses it to warn Eun-ae.

In 1999, Young-sook kills a policeman and pursues Eun-ae. In 2019, an older Young-sook reveals himself and similarly pursues Seo-yeon. Eun-ae uses the phone again, and Seo-yeon picks her up and encourages her to fight. Eun-ae seemingly sacrifices herself to kill Young-sook, and the year 2019 changes, the house is deserted, and the old Young-sook disappears. Seo-yeon leaves the house and is reunited with Eun-ae, who is alive and well, albeit scarred.

In the middle scene, the older Young-sook calls out to her younger counterpart to warn her of Eun-ae and the police officer arriving, allowing Young-sook to change her own history, leading to Eun-ae being erased from present-day Seo. -other side. The scene then cuts to a torture chamber where a person tied to a chair and covered in a white cloth screams for help. The cloth is removed to reveal a frightened adult Seo-yeon, once again Young-sook’s captive. “The Call.”

The Call Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?

As the story of ‘The Call’ begins to unfold, we see Young Sook struggling through the accident that led to the death of Seo Yeon’s father. Seo Yeon reciprocates and warns her of her death at the hands of her mother. When both of these past events are undone, the situation turns 360 degrees. All hell breaks loose as we see Young Sook go completely berserk and become a mass murderer.

After the incident, Young Sook finds out that she has been sentenced to life in prison for killing two people. To get into it, she starts blackmailing Seo Yeon and asks her to find out the events that led to her arrest. When Seo Yeon refuses, Young Sook tastes blood and kills the former father in the past, and kidnaps a younger version of her.

As the climax of the film approaches, we see Seo Yeon from the future working closely with her mother in the past. They are killing Young Sook, or so they tell us. The finale of ‘The Call’ brings Seo Yeon’s grief phase over her mother’s death. However, we get goosebumps when her mother visits her as she cries in front of her tombstone.

Next, we see a happy Seo Yeon coming out of the cemetery, so we assume that her mother managed to survive the fall. On the other hand, it was also possible that Seo Yeon managed to save her mother and ended up in the present to relive that particular moment with her mother. However, it was not as simple as it seemed.

In the next scene, we saw Young Sook from the future contacting her past self and warning her about all the events that are happening. She explains the same and urges Young Sook to hold the phone no matter what happens. We watch a bloody Young Sook lying cold in a pool of her own blood. But when she opens her eyes, the tables are turned, suggesting that she is alive.
