Yoon Kye Sang And Yoo Na Are A Team Being Chased By The Police In “The Kidnapping Day”

ENA’s drama “The Kidnapping Day” has shared new stills ahead of its upcoming third episode!

Based on a novel of the same name, “The Kidnapping Day” is a black comedy about a special alliance between a blundering kidnapper and a genius 11-year-old girl. Yoon Kye Sang plays Kim Myung Joon, a first-time kidnapper who abducts an 11-year-old girl to raise money for his daughter’s hospital fees.

Yoo Na of “Pachinko” plays genius girl Choi Ro Hee, who has a cynical and exceptional mind despite her young age and forms a strange bond with Kim Myung Joon. Kim Shin Rok plays Seo Hye Eun, Kim Myung Joon’s mysterious ex-wife who suddenly left him and their daughter three years ago, only to return and propose that Kim Myung Joon kidnap Choi Ro Hee.

Spoilers

Previously on “The Kidnapping Day,” Kim Myung Joon followed his ex-wife’s plan and attempted to kidnap Choi Ro Hee in order to pay for his daughter’s hospital bills. However, before he could carry out the plan, Choi Ro Hee fainted in front of his car, and when she woke up, she had lost her memory.

Later, Kim Myung Joon panicked when he heard that Choi Ro Hee’s parents, Choi Jin Tae (Jeon Kwang Jin) and So Jin Yoo (Go Ha), had been mysteriously murdered. Detective Park Sang Yoon (Park Sung Hoon) named Kim Myung Hoon a suspect in the murder of Ro Hee’s parents, and Ro Hee figured out that Kim Myung Joon had deceived her into thinking that he was her real father.

In the upcoming third episode, Choi Ro Hee recalls that she saw a police car in front of her house the night she met Kim Myung Joon for the first time. She will also team up with Kim Myung Joon to uncover the truth about her parents’ death.

In a newly released still from the episode, Kim Myung Joon can be seen signing a contract with Choi Ro Hee. The contract is clearly a handwritten agreement prepared by Choi Ro Hee, piquing viewers’ curiosity about whether Choi Ro Hee, who has found out that Kim Myung Joon is not her real father, has also found out about his true identity. It also remains to be seen what kinds of terms Ro Hee has written in the agreement.

In the third episode of the ENA Thursday drama The Kidnapping Day, broadcast on the 20, Myung Joon (played by Yoon Kye Sang) found out that he was not the father but the kidnapper in Ro Hee's (played by Yu Na) memories. As they join forces to uncover the truth behind the murder case, Detective Sang Yoon (played by Park Sung Hoon) begins to doubt Myung Joon and Ro Hee's reactions.

jQr8ob_2f.jpg

The third episode recorded impressive ratings, reaching 3.1% nationwide and 2.7% in the Seoul metropolitan area (Nielsen Korea, based on paid households). This marked a two-fold increase compared to the previous episode, securing the top spot in the Thursday drama lineup. Notably, the highest viewership in the Bundang region reached 3.7%, generating a heated response from viewers.

In this episode, Ro Hee discovers Myung Joon's true identity as the kidnapper and the truth that her real parents were killed. As they headed in different directions, they remembered the night of the murder when sirens passed the house. Ro Hee suggested the possibility that the police were involved in her parents' death and asked Myung Joon to help her regain her memories. Thus, their cooperation as a "team" began.

E5JrbQ_2f.jpg

After learning from Myung Joon that his ex-wife, Hye Eun (played by Kim Shin Rok), was behind the kidnapping, Ro Hee expressed her intention to meet her. She needed to discover why she was chosen as the kidnapping target and who she indeed was. Myung Joon evaded the police patrolling near the Yeongin Station with a false tip, while Ro Hee devised a plan to avoid inspection. In the meantime, Sang Yoon discovered that Myung Joon had paid 50 million won in medical bills for his daughter and the bank transaction records of the deceased Choi Jin Tae (played by Jeon Kwang Jin). He confirmed that 20 billion won had been deposited into the accounts of five people around the same time.

As Myung Joon's identity was exposed in the news, Ro Hee and Myung Joon headed to Hye Eun's house while avoiding the police investigation and the scrutiny of people. Ro Hee wasted no time and directly confronted Hye Eun with questions about why she had planned the kidnapping and especially the background behind selecting her. The primary reason, of course, was money. However, Hye Eun revealed that Ro Hee's parents couldn't easily report her due to the ongoing abuse. But that wasn't the only thing Hye Eun was hiding. She asked Myung Joon about his plans while Ro Hee was asleep, stating, "The police won't find out who you are. What kind of person are you?"

Later, Sang Yoon received Myung Joon's record from Jung Man (played by Jung Soon Won). It was a shock when they discovered Myung Joon's past, specifically his involvement in a "murder" case. Additionally, one of the individuals who received the 20 billion won from Choi Jin Tae, Eun Sun (played by Seo Jae Hee), revealed during questioning that the money was part of the research support funds for the late Choi Jin Tae. This revelation intensified the curiosity about the true identity of the "genius girl" Ro Hee, who worries more about the public disclosure of her kidnapping and disappearance than the case itself.

The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 3-4

by solstices

Now that they’re truly in cahoots, our unlikely pair must remain on their toes to evade the police hot on their heels. Secrets are revealed, but more questions surface in their place, shrouding our precocious hostage in yet another layer of mystery.

EPISODES 3-4

Caught in his lie, Myung-joon comes clean about his identity and the kidnapping plan. He apologizes to Ro-hee, but it’s all too much for her to take in. Shocked and devastated, Ro-hee bursts into tears, wailing that she wants to go home.

Wracked with guilt, Myung-joon takes Ro-hee to a nearby police station, where she urges him to leave and see Hee-ae get her surgery before turning himself in. He does, and Ro-hee heads towards the station — but the sirens of an approaching police car trigger a flashback. As the headlights flash relentlessly, Ro-hee begins to hyperventilate as her mind races through snippets of the events leading up to her kidnapping.

The next thing Myung-joon knows, he’s being chased by a cop, sending his panic meter skyrocketing. Except he isn’t being arrested — Ro-hee runs out from behind the cop, relieved to be reunited with her “dad.” Hahaha, she drops Myung-joon’s hand like a hot potato once the officer leaves.

Now that she’s suspicious of the police, Ro-hee demands that Myung-joon take responsibility — he kidnapped her, so he should provide her with a roof over her head and help her recover her memories. As usual, Ro-hee gets her way, which means she drafts up a written contract detailing Myung-joon’s duties. Have I mentioned that I love her?

With a cleverly-orchestrated diversion, Ro-hee misdirects the officers away so she and Myung-joon can take the train to Seoul. They head for Hye-eun’s apartment, where Ro-hee immediately starts questioning her. Hye-eun’s flippant responses do nothing to quell Ro-hee’s suspicions, so our duo tail Hye-eun to a hospital, where she finally confesses two major secrets to the pair.

First — Hye-eun has HIV. She’d found out when Hee-ae was three, and she’d left them because she couldn’t risk spreading AIDS to Hee-ae. Knowing that Myung-joon wouldn’t have had the heart to cut her off, Hye-eun chose to conceal her diagnosis and abscond. In light of this revelation, she and Myung-joon shed tears over her sacrifice, but something about this story feels a little too pat for me to believe it just yet.

Second — Hye-eun confirms what we’d been suspecting since last week. Ro-hee had been the subject of her own father’s experiment, dubbed “The Genius Child Project.” The nature of the research had necessitated it to be kept discreet, but it had garnered great interest and funding amongst those in the know. Above all, it certainly explains the needle bruises on Ro-hee’s arms, as well as her extraordinary intellect.

Our duo may have made it safely to Seoul, but Sang-yoon has prepared a counterattack — he’s decided to publicize the case. Myung-joon is now a wanted criminal. Worse yet, both Ro-hee (and us viewers) are suddenly thrown a curveball. Myung-joon is an ex-convict — and he’d been locked up on murder charges. Oh my god. Turns out Myung-joon had been a judo athlete, until he strangled an opponent to death in the ring.

Myung-joon is feeling the heat, with his instinct pushing him towards turning himself in so they no longer have to sneak around. But that’s when Ro-hee displays her first moment of vulnerability. Tearfully, she points out that Myung-joon is the only person she can trust right now — has he ever cared for her, or is he only thinking about his real daughter?

Chastened, Myung-joon apologizes, reassuring Ro-hee that he’s cared about her this entire time. Through sobs, Ro-hee asks him to protect her, and when he promises, she jumps to her feet and brushes her tears away like all’s right with the world again, hee.

I may try this one again later but I did not like the backstory having the nurse drop her tray, security not hold the guy or beginning of modern day.  ML was trying to be inconspicuous with his car lights on?  Nope, not today.

Glad it is doing well in ratings, though.

Hee Ae's mom is real.. shady to say the least. Why did she insists on picking Ro Hee as the intended kidnap victim as her plan?

Ro Hee is really a genius LoL and asking all the right questions. I still don't like how she bosses Myeong Jun around. But their bond is kinda cute and fun to watch LoL.

It was also revealed that Ro Hee’s father Choi Jin Tae (Jeon Kwang Jin) was seeking funding for his “genius child project” using his daughter Ro Hee as a test subject.

The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 5-6

by solstices

Our precocious child is deposited right back into the cold and clinical environment she was forced to grow up in, reinforcing just how little of a childhood she’s had. An unexpected — and entertainingly charismatic — wildcard shows up to join the unlikely household, bringing both amusing unpredictability and ominous scheming with him.

EPISODES 5-6 RECAP

Following Myung-joon’s heroic rescue of Ro-hee, our injured kidnapper and his unconscious charge are quickly collected by Ho-young and delivered to Eun-seon. Back in the opulent, secluded villa where research used to be carried out on her, Ro-hee is immediately subjected to countless diagnostic tests. It’s equal parts chilling and heartbreaking to hear Eun-seon speak of Ro-hee as if she’s a robot — she’s merely checking if any brain functions have been lost, and she clearly cares little for the child’s wellbeing.

When Myung-joon comes to, Eun-seon finally explains Professor Choi’s research, and her part in it as an investor. She commends him for keeping Ro-hee safe, but that’s as far as she’ll allow. Offering to sponsor Hee-ae by covering the entire cost of her medical treatment and education, Eun-seon veils her demand in a deal — Myung-joon must leave Ro-hee’s side in exchange.

For all her complaining about peasant food before, Ro-hee’s lost her appetite for the lavish dining of her affluent household — only Myung-joon’s humble, home-cooked flour pancakes manage to bring a tiny smile to her face. Aww.

Later, Myung-joon interrupts Ro-hee in the middle of a complex Russian book to take her on a beach playdate. Quietly, Ro-hee admits that it’s her first time touching the sea, and Myung-joon gazes at her with a pensive look on his face. Then he’s scooping her up and running out to sea, and before long the two are having the time of their lives splashing water at each other.

Once they’ve dried off, Ro-hee reveals to Myung-joon that Eun-seon’s daughter has a developmental disorder, which explains her interest in the Genius Child Project. If not for Ro-hee’s role in the research, she’d be worthless. With the barest hint of tears forming in her eyes, Ro-hee asks Myung-joon to continue lying to her if she ever loses her memory again — she’d rather him pretend to be her dad. Sobs.

On the night that Myung-joon is supposed to depart, Ro-hee suddenly has a flashback while searching up news articles about her parents’ murder. The flashing lights she’d seen hadn’t been that of a police car — they’d been yellow, the exact color that the security company uses. Myung-joon immediately urges her to run away and pursue the truth, but Ro-hee knows it’s easier said than done, and she comes up with a plan.

After one last tearful farewell with Hee-ae, Myung-joon attempts to bribe the boat captain into turning back, but he’s met with a metal rod to the back of his head. Meanwhile, as Ro-hee sprints down the road leading away from her ornate prison, she’s met by bright headlights. Out of the car steps Kang Young-seok (yay, finally!) as the very suave JADEN, smirking like a cat that just caught the canary.

Ro-hee’s escape attempt is foiled just like that, and she’s brought back under Eun-seon’s watchful eye. Eun-seon and Jaden may not be on the best of terms, as an early investor and the investor who holds the most shares respectively, but both of them need Ro-hee alive, captive, and compliant. The international fund manager Jaden has returned from Singapore in order to stake claim on the profitable research that he believes ought to be wholly his, and his right-hand man Ho-young is ready to assist him every step of the way.

With her usual disregard for the social hierarchy, Ro-hee bluntly orders Jaden to bring Myung-joon back. Jaden’s amused that Ro-hee thinks she has the grounds upon which to bargain, but she isn’t the least bit intimidated by his threats. After all, she’s been subjected to endless injections and drugs all her life, so he can’t possibly do much worse.

So, how’s our favorite kidnapper doing? Out at sea, Myung-joon regains consciousness amidst a fight between the two smuggler boats, both greedy for Myung-joon’s cash-lined duffle bag. Armed with a fishing net and sheer determination, Myung-joon defeats all the thugs and makes it safely back to shore.

Unfortunately for Myung-joon, he’s apprehended at the harbor by Sang-yoon. In the police van, a frazzled Myung-joon spills the beans, pleading for them to help Ro-hee. Ha, his train of thought is speeding so fast that Sang-yoon can barely catch up. Myung-joon barely manages to recall the highway number leading to the villa before Ho-young rams into the van with a stolen fish truck, incapacitating the officers and retrieving Myung-joon.

I started this a couple days ago because I read the ratings were pretty good.  I like it!  I love the relationship between Myung joon and Ro Hee, although she is a little rude.  I think she's going to soften as the relationship continues.  Yes, Myung Joo is wrong for kidnapping, but he is trying to save his daughter.  He is also taking care of Ro Hee.  I wonder how the relationship will change once the real daughter joins them.
