Meet villain Byun Woo-seok in Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon

by Jenzy

KNS1.jpg

The latest teaser for Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon has taken a different angle from the previous two, this time putting the spotlight on our show’s villain. The greedy CEO Byun Woo-seok (Moonshine) faces off against our three generations of strong ladies: Lee Yumi (Mental Coach Jegal), Kim Jung-eun (My Dangerous Wife), and Kim Hae-sook (Revenant).

The teaser opens on the tuxedo-clad Ryu Shi-oh (Byun Woo-seok) giving a smug speech to a group of wealthy investors, offering them a gift of “another world’s happiness.” While the specifics of what he wanted/offered in this deal are unclear, the effects are quickly obvious: Gangnam has become overrun with rampant crime. But not to fear! Our family trio are ready to take this matter into their own superpowered hands. Just like strong-mom Hwang Geum-joo (Kim Jung-eun) tells her daughter Kang Nam-soon (Lee Yumi) and mother Gil Joong-gan (Kim Hae-sook) in the voiceover, “Korea is no longer a drug-free nation. Let’s save the world.”

The onscreen text tells us it’s a battle between those who “want to give away the happiness of another world” versus those who “want to save their current world.” Then we cut to shots of the ladies’ takedown operation: Geum-joo sizing up Shi-oh in a glare-off, Nam-soon pretending to be a police officer to access files, and Shi-oh frustratedly punching a wall in a very curse you Perry the Platypus! moment. While he may not have expected three average women to waylay his plans, he’s definitely not going to take this lying down (more specifically, nor while doing shirtless headstand pushups).

Thankfully for our ladies, they’ll also have the go-getter police officer Ong Sung-woo (Would You Like a Cup of Coffee) in their corner. In the last few scenes, Geum-joo recruits him with an envelope of money and a voiceover promise that, “I am going to use my strength to make this world a place worth living.” Will our ladies successfully outmuscle Shi-oh’s devious plan? Tune in to find out.

Written by Baek Mi-kyung (Mine) and directed by Kim Jung-shik (So Not Worth It) and Lee Kyung-shik, Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon will premiere on October 7 on JTBC.

Teasers for Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon’s heroes and villain

by lovepark

A new batch of superheroes are ready and raring to go in JTBC’s upcoming Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon. Helmed by three generations of strong ladies, there’s daughter Lee Yumi (Mental Coach Jegal), mother Kim Jung-eun (My Dangerous Wife), and grandmother Kim Hae-sook (Revenant).

Starting off with the youngest, Kang Nam-soon (Lee Yumi) is described as a woman with natural-born crazy energy. She does not know despair or when to give up, and from the looks of her character teaser, she clearly has no fear, either.

In voiceover, her mother says that Nam-soon has returned to her arms from the vast plains of Mongolia, and thinks this is destiny. She tells her daughter that she cannot live an average life, and we get quick sequences of Nam-soon riding a horse, jumping out of an airplane, and facing off against a group of thugs. As she tosses people around like rag dolls and carries others on her back, she says, “I am truly happy when I can help someone.”

Next up is Hwang Geum-joo (Kim Jung-eun), a.k.a. Nam-soon’s mother. Her description says that she is unembarrassed of being nouveau riche, and from her teaser, she is clearly rocking her looks and strutting like a boss.

The teaser cuts between scenes of Geum-joo appearing classy in one and badass in the next, but regardless of her garb, she is always strong and confident. Raising a glass, she makes a toast to a world where everyone can live well, not just the rich. As she stands in the middle of the road with her hair blowing in the wind, she declares, “I plan to give it a try.”

Finishing off this family trio is grandmother Gil Joong-gan (Kim Hae-sook). Like the others, she is not someone to be trifled with, and the show describes her as the “Attack on Grandma” and femme fatale of seniors.

Though her name may mean “middle,” she says that nothing about her is middling, and the teaser shows Joong-gan crushing meat with her bare hands, breaking down doors, and sending a person flying across the room. After knocking people down like bowling pins, she carries them on her shoulders to the police station and announces, “From now on, anyone who tries to scam their elders will die by my hands.”

Spoiler

Helping our superpowered ladies is Ong Sung-woo (Would You Like a Cup of Coffee) as Kang Hee-shik. Described as the police force’s elite, Hee-shik seems eager to charge forward and fight crime.

In his character teaser, Hee-shik pushes past a group of black-suited men and brandishes his police badge. He warns someone that he won’t let anyone slide if they refuse to cooperate with his investigation, and then we see him make an arrest.

Spoiler

Last but not least is the show’s villain, CEO Ryu Shi-oh played by Byun Woo-seok (Moonshine). His description calls him on edge as well as a psychopath with a victim mentality. Definitely not a good combination of traits.

Our villain seems to value strength above all else as he narrates, “If you’re strong, then fears disappear. You can do anything.” Whether or not Shi-oh has superpowers like our ladies is unclear, but from the teaser, he easily throws a grown man down the street and kicks away a car. Staring into the camera, he states, “No one can treat me carelessly.”

Written by the original series writer Baek Mi-kyung (Mine) and directed by PDs Kim Jung-shik (So Not Worth It) and Lee Kyung-shik, JTBC’s Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon will premiere on October 7 in the Saturday-Sunday slot.

On September 28, the production team of the upcoming JTBC weekend series Strong Girl Kang Namsoon released the first stills of Ryu Shi Oh (Byeon Woo Seok), the villain in the K-drama. Expectations are running high as viewers eagerly anticipate the intense showdown between him and the three superpowered women Kang Nam Soon (Lee You Mi), Hwang Geum Joo (Kim Jung Eun), and Gil Joong Gan (Kim Hae Sook).

Ryu Shi Oh is the CEO of the distribution company Dugo and an ambitious figure, unafraid of anything. The newly released images further intensify the anticipation surrounding his character.

Ryu Shi Oh's dark charisma is attention-demanding. Even when he sits quietly, his presence sends a chill. Hidden behind a stoic poker face, viewers can catch glimpses of his enigmatic complexity.

Ryu Sio's explosive anger is also showcased. He seems to be raging over something that has provoked him. The audience's attention is focused on how the charismatic villain Ryu Shi Oh, who possesses both power and charisma, will clash with the three heroic women Kang Nam Soon (Lee You Mi), Hwang Geum Joo (Kim Jung Eun), and Gil Joong Gan (Kim Hae Sook).

Actor Byeon Woo Seok said, "I liked the works of writer Baek Mi Kyung and director Kim Jung Shik and was attracted to the charismatic villain Ryu Shi Oh". He also shared that he felt excitement and fear as it was his first time playing a villain. "I communicated with the director and prepared for the filming with determination", he said.

Commenting on his character Ryu Shi Oh, Byeon Woo Seok said, "He has a cool-headedness and toughness which makes him unhesitant to use any means to achieve his goals". He added, "As it is a villain role, I made an effort to express my gaze and gestures coldly. It was challenging to naturally portray an unusual situation and character, but I put great effort into ensuring that viewers could accept Ryu Shi Oh without feeling uncomfortable".

Strong Woman Kang Nam Soon is set to premiere on October 7.
