[YEAR-END REVIEW]Celebrity suicides shock the nation in 2008

A string of celebrity suicides in 2008 has sent shockwaves across the nation, gripping devout fans and raising fears of copycat suicides. The suicide of an iconic actress this year has also provoked political bickering over whether to penalize cyberspace libel.

A couple of high-profile rulings on mercy killing and adultery have also touched off heated national debates this year.

High-profile suicides

The most shocking of the suicide cases was the death of Choi Jin-sil, Korea's long-beloved iconic actress.

On Oct. 2, Choi, 39, was found hanging in a shower stall at her residence in Seoul with a bandage tightened around her neck, ending her 20-year stellar career on the silver screen.

Her death came in the midst of internet rumors that she had lent billions of won to Ahn Jae-hwan, a renowned actor, and then blackmailed him. Ahn also killed himself about a month before her death.

Choi had felt increasingly suicidal, with the persisting rumors deepening her depression and denting her confidence restored by a successful 2007 comeback in a tear jerking soap opera.

Her ugly divorce in 2004 with ex-husband, former pro baseball player Cho Sung-min, had tarnished her girlish pure image and led her to go on a hiatus.

200812230006.jpg

Ahn was found dead on Sept. 8 in his minivan in Seoul, where he had locked himself in and burned two charcoal briquettes. He died from toxic fumes, according to police.

The actor had agonized over snowballing debts from a series of moribund businesses, which led him to desperately seek money, even from loan sharks, his close associates said.

Their deaths were followed by another string of high-profile suicides, including those by transgender actress Jang Chae-won, homosexual model Kim Ji-hu and former government official Kim Young-cheol in October and singer Lee Seo-hyun this month.

Choi's death had touched off a politically-charged debate on whether to tighten rules in cyberspace as her case was just the latest in a series of celebrity suicides apparently caused by cyber-bullying.

Jeong Da-bin, an actress famed for her girlish image, was found hanging in her boyfriend's house in February last year. She apparently killed herself partially because of mental suffering from malicious internet messages directed at her.

Her death came immediately after pop singer Yuni hanged herself in January last year. Yuni had also been agitated by defamatory internet messages criticizing her plastic surgeries and personal life.

The ruling Grand National Party and the government have sought ways to combat cyberspace defamation, including criminalizing libel on the internet and expanding the mandatory use of real names on the internet.

Opposition parties, however, upbraided such moves, citing the possibility of hampering freedom of expression.

Celebrity deaths also prompted concerns about the so-called Werther effect, referring to copycat suicides. Such concerns turned into reality with reports of a few people killing themselves in the same way Choi did.

"Celebrities, in many cases, may have to stifle their emotions given that they are public figures. This makes them unfortunately accumulate and harbor their stress, triggering suicidal thoughts," said Min Sung-gil, a psychiatrist at the Severance Hospital in Seoul.

"Many tend to think that they cannot solve the problems, and may choose to kill themselves if famous figures were found to have committed suicide after suffering the same problems they have."

Ruling on mercy killing

The lawsuit filed by a family in May to have a Seoul hospital stop life-sustaining treatment for their 75-year-old mother has led society to question whether to allow those in a permanent vegetative state with no chance of recovery to have their life-sustaining machines turned off.

The family said treatment for their mother Kim Ok-kyung was "a meaningless act of life extension," and that Kim would have chosen to face natural death if given the conscious wish not to be artificially kept alive.

The Seoul Western District Court made the ruling on Nov. 28 to remove the respirator from Kim based on her previous statements, religious belief and conscious wishes to die naturally.

Severance Hospital, which has treated Kim for nearly eight months, said it will appeal the ruling.

Korea's penal code criminalizes any form of ending another's life as murder. Even with prior consent from patients or family members, withholding life-saving items such as water, food, medicine and a respirator can constitute a crime if a third person takes issue with it.

Previously, a local court convicted a wife and two doctors for letting a patient in critical condition leave the hospital without due medical treatment. In 1997, despite doctors' strong warnings, the wife demanded that the hospital release her 58-year-old husband suffering from a hematoma, or blood clot in his head, citing her poor economic situation.

Medical experts showed a generally positive response to the court ruling. Some say it is better to stop the meaningless extension of life for an unconscious patient with no hope of recovery, given the burden on patients and families.

Religious circles remain cautious, saying "No human being has the right to end his or her own life." They worry that if any form of euthanasia is given a green light by court, it could forge a society where people disregard life.

Adultery case

A high-profile adultery case involving a celebrity couple -- Park Cheol and Oak So-ri -- has rekindled the debate on whether to repeal the law criminalizing extramarital affairs.

The Korean penal code defines adultery as a crime punishable by up to two years behind bars. Last week, a lower court handed Oak a suspended sentence of eight months in jail.

The Constitutional Court ruled in October that the decades-old adultery law is constitutional, its fourth ruling upholding the law. The court pointed to the initial purpose of the law, which it says is to safeguard marriages -- "the bedrock of society."

What is noteworthy about the ruling, however, is that there were more justices in the nine-justice court against the law than those in favor. Five justices ruled the law unconstitutional, but scrapping the law requires at least six to vote against it.

Since its enactment in 1953, a total of three rulings, excluding this year's, were made in 1990, 1993 and 2001. All of them were in favor of the law, saying that the protection of family values outweighs individuals' rights to make decisions about their sex lives.

Supporters of the law have argued that the law is a legal bulwark protecting family values in Korea which, they claim, has two-fold moral standards. Many believe that a man committing adultery is acceptable to an extent, but it is intolerable if committed by a woman, a legacy of Korea's long-revered Confucian values.

Before the nation was industrialized, women were wholly dependent on men's earnings, making marriage a crucial way for women to support themselves. But most modern women can now support themselves, making the adultery law increasingly obsolete, experts say.

Those against the law contend that it is inappropriate for the state to meddle in a person's sex life as it is an expression of emotion that cannot be legally stifled.

They also say the law has been abused as a means of revenge or to secure more alimony. Others argue the process of proving adultery cases has violated human rights.

Actor and singer Choi Jin-young, younger brother of late actress Choi Jin-sil, appeared on the KBS "Park Jung Hoon Show" on Dec. 21, and spoke of his sister. "There were times when I resented her for passing on this huge burden to me," said a tearful Choi.

"I decided to come to the show because I wanted to show my sister in heaven that many people are still remembering her," he added.

Choi said after the divorce his sister suffered from malicious comments posted online -- and once decided to immigrate to the U.S. for the sake of her children. Choi also told how the late actress returned to the spotlight via KBS drama "My Rosy Life" after undergoing personal difficulties.

"I hope she visits my dreams and tell me that she is doing all right," said Choi.

Choi Jin-sil committed suicide last October after suffering from extreme stress over a rumor that she may have lent money to actor Ahn Jae-hwan, who also committed suicide due to business failure and consequent financial difficulties.

Mc Mong dedicates to late actress Choi Jin Sil

It was no secret that the rapper and late actress Choi Jin Sil were close friends and even the day before she passed, the mother of two requested his song “I Love You, Oh Thank You” on the radio. Mc Mong’s album which hit Korea yesterday, has a song called “Even in Heaven, Jin Sil” and it’s dedicated to the actress because of a promise made between the two friends before her death. She and the rapper promised that if he wrote a song for her she would be his star in the MV. Unfortunately, this never happened.

Choi Jin Shil’s Ashes Stolen!

On August 15th, 2009, it was reported that Choi Jin Shil's ashes were stolen from her burial site. As if that wasn't enough, the back of her tombstone was also smashed.

Police are currently in the midst of investigations, but they believe that it might be difficult to capture the culprit, as the CCTV camera's had been turned off since the 13th. Two empty soju bottles were also found near the burial site, with police believing that it was left behind by the culprit. There was nothing amiss when the burial site caretaker did his routine patrol at around 6pm on the 14th.

We hope that the culprit is caught soon and the ashes returned, so that Choi Jin Shil may rest in peace again

Police Search for Suspect in Actress' Urn Theft

By Park Si-soo

Staff Reporter

Police made public additional video footage of a man suspected of stealing an urn containing the ashes of the late actress Choi Jin-sil on Monday and placed him on a wanted list.

Launching an open investigation, the Yangpyeong Police Station asked for tips and/or cooperation from citizens to nail the suspect, offering a reward of 3 million won ($2,400) in cash.

So far, police have conducted a low-key investigation into the incident that took place on Aug. 5. However, they recently decided to change their method as little progress had been made.

The police showed new surveillance camera images of the suspect caught on Aug. 2 in which a man seemingly aged between his late 30s and early 50s is strolling around the tomb for about 13 minutes, measuring length and writing something.

In previously released images last week, a man, who police presume is the same individual, approached Choi's tomb, made a hole in it with a hammer, and took the urn, at 3:45 a.m.

"Though blurry, we can identify the appearance of the suspect through the new images because he was exposed to light," Woo Jae-jin, the chief investigator, said. Based on the first images, police believe a mentally challenged person or those believing in shamanism is involved in the crime.

Woo said the police are not ruling out the possibility that the criminal is an ordinary person with no criminal record.

The investigator added it must be a premeditated crime as the suspect cleaned up the scene after stealing the urn.

The National Scientific, Criminal and Investigation Laboratory inspected the scene in search of fingerprints and possible DNA traces on liquor bottles left at the scene, but found nothing. Surveillance videotapes of nearby highways are being studied to check traffic to the facility, the police said.

The mother of the late actress urged the criminal to return the urn. "Can't you let the poor thing rest in peace," she said. "My heart is torn into a thousand pieces."

Choi, who enjoyed a 20-year acting career, committed suicide last October at her home in Seoul, allegedly from depression following rumors that she had lent money to the late actor Ahn Jae-hwan, who killed himself a month earlier in the face of snowballing debt.

Choi Jin Shil’s Grave Robber Caught?

coolsmurf in General | 25 Aug 2009 - 12:12 AM

Not quite...

The police investigation team in charge of the case of Choi Jin Shil's stolen ashes, revealed on the morning of 25th August that they have apprehended a possible suspect, named Jang. The suspect was caught by police on the 24th, after attempting to jack-up the initial police cash reward to 1 billion KRW.

According to the police, Jang had made 4 phone calls to Choi Jin Shil's burial site between 2.15 - 9.30pm on the 24th, claiming that Choi Jin Shil's urn was in his hands. He then asked for one billion KRW in exchange for it. The police moved swiftly to track down the phone call and managed to apprehend, Jang on the same day.

Through initial interrogation attempts, Jang revealed that he was tempted by the huge cash reward offered by the police to catch the real culprit and had hoped to use the money to help him through his difficult life. The police has confirmed that the suspect, Jang is not the same man captured on CCTV footage released earlier. But they are not discounting the possibility that Jang could be an accomplice and will continue to interrogate him.

Man wanted

The police had offered a cash reward of 3 million KRW the day before, hoping that the public could assist them in finding the real culprit as soon as possible. It was also revealed that the burial site committee has also chipped in with 0.3 million KRW, raising the total cash reward to 3.3 million KRW. But no real leads have been given as yet.

Mighty shame that it was just a false call. The wait continues.

Choi Jin Shil’s Grave Robber Caught!

After a false alarm, the police investigation team in charge of the case of Choi Jin Shil's stolen ashes, revealed on 26th August, that they have apprehended a 41 year old suspect, Park, at his Daegu home just after midnight, a few hours ago.

From CCTV footage released by the police earlier of the burial site, the suspect had surveyed the burial site between 1 - 2nd August, before committing the crime between 4 - 5th August. The police got a breakthrough in their investigations after they ran a check on a string of phonecalls made near Choi Jin Shil's burial site. They found a possible suspect on the morning of 25th and managed to apprehend him deep in the night after a successful operation.

Besides the suspect, the police also recovered the urn and Choi Jin Shil's ashes. Unlike what many expected, the urn wasn't really lost or anything. But the urn was a bit destroyed, and the suspect had transported the ashes into another container. It's not clear right now, what the suspect's motive was behind stealing Choi Jin Shil's ashes.

But police did reveal that from the overnight interrogation attempts, the suspect had revealed, "Choi Jin Shil appeared in my dreams, asking me to take her ashes out, so I did it", hinting that perhaps he is of unsound mind or maybe just putting up an act.

More will be revealed at a press conference later today at Yangpyeong police headquarters.
