During the end of the MBC Special they had for Choi Jin-sil last week, Song Yoon-ah, a good friend of CJS's who you might know from On Air, said there was a time when she was going through a very tough time with internet rumors and that Jin-sil unni called her and told her not to worry, not to look at the internet, to just concentrate on her show, and that everything will work itself out in time.

Actress Choi's Last Conversation Disclosed

The Late Choi Jin-sil

The contents of the last phone call the late actress Choi Jin-sil made to a magazine reporter have been disclosed.

In the November edition of Queen magazine, the reporter, Kim, a close friend of Choi, revealed the phone conversation he had with Choi just before she committed suicide. She expressed grief over rumors believed to have forced her to take her own life.

According to the report, Choi called him around 1 a.m. on Oct. 2, presumably hours before committing suicide, and cried for a while. She repeatedly said, "I don't need anything! What did I do wrong? Will all this end, if I die?"

Choi suffered rumors that she was involved in the death of actor Ahn Jae-hwan, who killed himself in September allegedly after failing to pay back debts to loan sharks. It was rumored that Choi lent him billions of won.

"I want to die. No, I'll die. Listen, listen to me carefully as it will be the last. I want you to take care of my children. I'm sorry. Please help the kids. You know what I have suffered for the last six years, you know what the truth is. I trust you," Choi said, ending the seven and a half minute call.

In an earlier call made Sept. 30, Choi told Kim, "I thought people would believe me because the rumor spreader was caught. But online boards are still filled with my story, and many people still believe that I'm the loan shark who drove Ahn to death."

"I'm so scared. I feel like dying if the situation continues. Will people trust me if I die? My name is 'Choi Jin-sil' (Jin-sil means truth) but people call me 'Choi Hypocrisy.' Isn't it sad?" she was quoted as saying.

"I'm sorry for my children, but it may be better to become a mom whose truth is revealed after death than a mom at whom people point fingers," Choi said.

Jo Sung Min and Choi Jin Shil’s Family Embroiled in Battle

Even after the death of Choi Jin Shil, a battle is now being waged between her ex-husband Jo Sung Min and Choi Jin Shil’s family over her property rights and custody of the 2 children. This is currently being hotly disputed in Korea.

According to a close friend of Choi Jin Shil, Choi’s ex-husband Jo Sung Min met up with Choi Jin Young (Choi Jin Shi’s brother) yesterday afternoon for a discussion over Choi Jin Shil’s property rights and it gradually descended into a tense mental exchange. This close friend expressed, “Earlier, Jo Sung Min had visited Choi Jin Shil’s mother and suggested that Choi Jin Shi’s property rights should go to him. He also met up with Choi Jin Young yesterday to reiterate his stand. He also said that he would go through legal means to appeal and regain full custody of the 2 children whom he had given up on in 2004.”

According to the current Korean judicial system, if the mother passes on, custody of the children automatically goes to the father. But with Jo Sung Min having given up on full custody of the children in 2004 following his divorce to Choi Jin Shil, this has become much more complicated than it seems. According to a lawyer who specialises in cases like this, “If Jo Sung Min didn’t give up custody of the children, it will automatically be his by law. But this is a complicated situation right now and will probably be settled in court.”

What is the value of Choi Jin Shil’s property rights? Many estimate that it could be around 200 million KRW. But Choi’s family denied that estimation and said the actual figure was only 1/4 of the estimated amount. They expressed that Choi had 10 million in cash, her house was worth 30 million, adding other properties and land that she owns, the total is just over 50 million KRW.

With both parties stating their intention to manage Choi Jin Shi’s property rights and neither budging, this has led to an escalation in worsening relations between them. According to the close friend, “Jo Sung Min had warned Choi’s family that they are not to manage or withdraw any money under Choi Jin Shil’s name without his stamp. He claimed that the children’s mom (Choi Jin Shil) would have wanted him to manage her property rights after her death.”

With Choi’s children only 7 and 5 years old respectively, they aren’t of age right now. With them yet to reach 18 years old, who should manage their mom’s property rights? According to another close friend of Choi, “We knew that there would be a dispute over Choi Jin Shil’s property rights. But seeing this really happen really saddens and pains my heart. I sincerely hope that the dispute between the adults would not cause any hurt to the children in any way.”

Actress Choi Jin-shil Mourned 49 Days after Death

Forth-nine days have passed since noted actress Choi Jin-shil took her own life. In the 49th-day tribute for this ill-fated actress, her close friends and family members have gathered at her grave site to remember her life. The ceremony was held in the morning of November 19th at the Gapsan Cemetery in Yangsuri, Gyeonggi Province with Choi’s mother and brother (actor/singer Choi Jin-young), and her closest friends comedienne Lee Young-ja and actress Shin-ae.

Notably absent was Choi’s ex-husband and former baseball star Cho Sung-min, who’s currently embroiled in a controversial custody battle with Choi’s family. He was seen at the cemetery on November 18th, the day before the 49th day ceremony, to avoid media attention and an encounter with Choi’s family and friends.

Cho had given up his parental right over their two children after his divorce from Choi. But his parental right was automatically restored upon Choi’s death, which can also give him custody of her two young children and their inheritance, which is presumed to be in millions of dollars. Choi’s family and women’s advocate groups have rallied against Cho’s rights over children and Choi’s assets and urged the government to change the laws on parental rights. Meanwhile, Cho has denied his interest in the money, but has insisted on having visiting rights to see his children and carry out his fatherly duty.

'Forever' Wins Korea’s Top Blue Dragon

South Korea’s leading national film awards ceremony, the 29th Blue Dragon Awards, handed out its top prize of Best Picture to hit sports drama Forever the Moment, by woman director LIM Soon-rye. Starring MOON So-ri, the film, a true story about Korea’s women’s handball Olympic team, was 2008’s first local box office success.

Dominating the awards ceremony, held Nov. 20 in Yeoido, Seoul, was KIM Ji-woon’s kimchi western, The Good, The Bad, The Weird, which picked up 4 prizes including Best Cinematography, Best Director, and Best Art Direction. The 1930s Manchuria set film was the year’s highest grossing box office performer thus also picking up the Maximum Audience Award.

The Best Actor nod went to KIM Yoon-suk as the weathered ex-cop in NA Hong-jin’s The Chaser. SON Ye-jin captured the Best Actress prize for her lead in the comedy-drama My Wife Got Married.

Supporting Actor and Actress nods went to PARK Hee-soon for kidnapping thriller Seven Days and KIM Ji-young for her energetic role in Forever the Moment. Best New Actress went to HAN Ye-seul for Miss Gold Digger while the Best New Actor prize was shared by SO Ji-sub and KANG Ji-hwan, the two male leads in the KIM Ki-duk produced Rough Cut.

Crush and Blush, the debut feature by PARK Chan-wook’s assistant director LEE Gyeong-mi, garnered the female helmer both the Best New Director prize and the Best Screenplay award.

An Honorary Popular Star award was presented in memory of the late CHOI Jin-sil, who committed suicide in October. CHOI had made her debut in the 1990 film Nambugun and went on to win the Most Popular Female Star award 8 times at the Blue Dragon Awards.
