Bang-won faces one of his biggest and most important decisions yet, and it’s one he must face alone, even if it pits him against everything he once held dear. It’s hard to watch without wanting to just give him a hug, but it’s another great performance feather for Six Flying Dragons to put in its hat. Though it was hardly wanting for stellar acting before, episodes like this are always a welcome bonus.

EPISODE 31 RECAP

sixdragons31-00025.jpg sixdragons31-00026.jpg

While Bang-won eavesdrops nearby, Jung Do-jeon emphatically explains his proposed system of governing to Jung Mong-joo, adding that the dying nation of Goryeo wouldn’t be able to sustain such a change. Only by creating a new nation can any of these reforms hope to be achieved.

For his new country to exist, Jung Do-jeon adds, the king must have the power only to appoint a prime minister—and he wants Jung Mong-joo to be it. The success or failure of the country would rest on his shoulders, and not Lee Seong-gye’s.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Six Flying Dragons" Episode 32

photo676993.jpg

In addition to being heroic, Bang-won also manages to be quite noble. While it's easy enough for us to sit here in the future and question the efficacy of Bang-won's technique, in the immediate term Bang-won is always thinking in terms of self-sacrifice and personal appeal. The irony here is that Bang-won doesn't want to sacrifice himself in such a way that will make future sacrifice impossible. Bang-won can give up on Boon-yi and still live to fight another day. But it really is quite impossible to see how the fight for Joseon can succeed without Bang-won's continued assistance.

Dissension in the enemy ranks, for example, becomes a big plot point here. It's awkward how in the midst of all this high-stakes scheming "Six Flying Dragons" keeps reminding us how these antagonist characters, for all their flaws, are still people with similarly high-minded goals. That these goals are constantly mutually exclusive is besides the point. Everyone is struggling to protect what is dear to them. While they often fail, to them it's the effort that counts.

While the argument is a sweet one I'm not so sure it's all that convincing. As frustrating as Seong-gye was in the earlier parts of "Six Flying Dragons" with his refusal to react, increasingly I'm seeing why it is that this was always Seong-gye's go-to response. Seong-gye has seen firsthand what ambition can do and how it can destroy people. Even noble-minded characters like Do-jeon can end up going too far, as is demonstrated in the cliffhanger.

The burning is just...what a scene. Pay special attention to the facial expressions of the various characters. While the enthusiasm of the crowd is intoxicating, they're little mroe than a giant angry mob here. That's pretty serious cause for nervousness, yet Do-jeon is oblivious to all that's happening save for the glory. This is one of the first scenes in a long time where Do-jeon and Bang-won are both happy at the same time for the same reason, and given Bang-won's slide into darkness lately, that's a very worrying sign.

In light of all that, I sure am glad that Muhyul is around to provide comic relief every so often. He really is such a great character, with that dopey smile that can turn any bad situation into a fun one. Yet even there the taste is a bittersweet one. Muhyul, and most of the other supporting characters are used to following orders, not questioning them. And as we see demonstrated time and again, allies can be just as big a problem as enemies.

Actor Park Hae-Soo playing General Yi Ji-Ran in SFD officially confirmed that he is in love with musical actress Yim Gang-Hee. He said he will marry her after finishing SFD this year.

It is really funny to see some K-Netizens congratulate him on his marriage imitating his North Korean accent in SFD.  :)

The main problem is not with bang won or JDJ's ideas but the over fixation with ideology which is a problem contemporary societies and people especially in America and europe suffer from , thus often leading to imperfections and dysfunction in the system with policies that pander to various vested interests and in the end satisfy no one. Thus, what is right or wrong in terms of governance of a failed state is what is important and not ideology e.g. absolute power vs dispersion of powers as ultimately it is up to the humans involved in running the system, thus no use in a perfect system if the humans in it are all flawed. That is the reason why for the moment, I support Bang Won instead of JDJ.

i agree the fixation is bad and actually what socialist and political scientist (im not sure im translating it correctly) say that the character of a good and aware citizens and good governing is not being stagnant

but i cant agree on absolute ruling - it is important to check yourself and move from the party you usually vote for but you always deserve a vote

hi guys a comment from me about the latest two episodes.....

ep 31 is just heartbreaking to see bangwon has to deal with his inner conflict alone......not even boonyi can help him to solve the inner conflict.....feel like crying to see him like that....as expected yoo ah in is great in playing the emotions. I somehow like how monk jukryong look at cho young face when she got scolded by master yooksan....lol.....would there be any love line between these two?

ep 32 was great with the twists.....amazing....so the mother is the leader...lol....and yes from the ep it says boonyi's father is a servant am i right? or wrong translation by onehd translator? if her father is a servant then there is possibility bangwon would marry boonyi in the end as concubine (pleaseeeee i really want a happy ending for them)....finally they give a kissing scene there.....i thought they would never give that in view this saeguk drama...hehehe....even queen seondeok dont have that.....i was so surprised when they said nameless organisation started by yeomjong....haha how could i forget.....as expected from the evil......damn, so yeom jong evilness live through for more than 500 years and now make an appearance in six flying dragons....cool

i like how teacher hong dae hong is given such a role to train all the soldiers......bangwon got such a good eyes......and moohyul....i know they not going to give him the end credit title but i keep anticipating everytime his fighting scenes appeared..

i'm soooooooooooo love yoonrang swords skills are amazing...just found recently the actress came from the same company as yohan (bangji)....super cool

just one thing disappointed me for this week, no adult yeonhee appearance at all for both episodes....i know yoomi unnie was sick a while ago, hopefully that was the reason why she didnt appear....yeonhee beauty is like one of the main visual of the drama....hehe

ending for ep 32 is awesome!! same like ep 2.....and i love how bangwon cannot help but keep admiring his teacher....

Just watched epi 32 with subs after a hard and tiring day at work.

And all the tiredness disappeared in the air.

It was a spectacular episode in terms of story, writernim you deserve every word worthy of praise in dictionary.

The most imp takeaway from the Epi for me was the PARALLELS

Once upon a time Sambong marvelled at the decisive and bold nature of Bang Won when he brought the mighty Haedong Gapjok to their knees, he was a Stubborn, Self-righteous  force of nature who didnt care what came in his way and what method he had to use to get his objective done.....

And today Bang Won marvelled at Sambong when the Master imitated his Student's method.... he stubbornly broke free of all limitations surrounding land form and boldly burnt all records to ground, thus getting his objective of shackle-free land reform.

I have already said this and will say it again Six Flying Dragons is not the story of how Joseon was founded....

Its the story of two of the most remarkable men that ever lived in the Korean Soil.

Their Journey , their Growth, their Trials and Tribulations is what drives this Drama.

The wonderful portrayals of Yoo Ah In as the ambitious Bang Won  and Kim Myung Min as the Genius Jung Do Jeon makes this Drama Special and not to forget the Writernims who are the real heroes behind the screen.... KUDOS...!!!!

I really hope we get more such Dramas from this Special Group of People ....!!!

What I really love in this Drama is that most of the people feel real, their emotions , their woes, their sadness, their happiness..... everything feels natural.... we connect with them... for example when the Sadeabu led by Jung Do Jeon do their final stand protest at that Gate... when they sing the revolutionary song Muyiya.... similarly when Yi Song Ye takes the hard decision to save the lives of his soldiers even at the cost of his own family and today when people finally see their dream of land start coming true...... we feel and connect with their emotions.... atleast I do and that makes it a more memorable experience.

Whenever SFD will be finished and bid adieu .... it will leave a gaping hole in our Mondays and Tuesdays.....!!!

The historical background to help understand Ep. 31~32

tumblr_inline_o19ocarRv51s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Topknot

The flowing locks like Yi Bang-Won’s old hair means “I am not married” or “I’m a kid”. If a man get married, or if he is recognized as a grown-up even if he is unmarried (for example, if a little boy is appointed as a government officer), the man should do hair up in a topknot. It is called Sangtoo (상투) in Korean.

Yi Bang-Won should have tied a topknot way earlier, especially since he married Lady Min. But I guess the SFD writers wanted to make his topknot a symbol for a departure from his childhood (or a separation from his teacher Sambong).

tumblr_inline_o19oenhSR21s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ “Never call my name.”

Yi Bang-Won told Boon-Yi with tears in his eyes “The (childlike) play is over. I can’t play with you like this any more”. It was a farewell to his innocent childhood.

Bang-Won also told her “Never call my name.” Actually, it was breaking the social norm for a commoner girl to call a nobleman’s name like that. In those days, a name was so precious that it couldn’t be called carelessly. That’s why noblemen used another name like Sambong, Poeun, Woojae, and Hojeong which could be freely called by any one from any class.

Anyways, Jung Do-Jeon’s pen name Sambong (삼봉 三峯, meaning “three peaks”) came from Dadam Sambong (the three peaks on Namhan River) where he spent his childhood.

* Dodam Sambong (島潭三峯)

tumblr_inline_o19oivNWuq1s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Jung Do-Jeon’s Constitutional Monarchy

His system is called 재상총재제 宰相總裁制 meaning “Prime minister should be in charge of everything” system.

The five rules are fictional device created by SFD writers, but the content and purpose is historically true. It was recorded in Joseon’s first constitutional law written by Jung Do-Jeon in 1394. Since England’s Glorious Revolution happened in 1688, Jung Do-Jeon was 300 years ahead in the concept of a constitutional monarchy restricted by laws.

tumblr_inline_o19ol3qR0i1s5yhgo_540.jpg

* Joseon-Gyeongguk-Jeon (조선경국전 朝鮮經國典) : Joseon’s first constitutional law written by Jung Do-Jeon in 1394, published in 1395.

Why did he think prime minister should manage everything instead of King? Because king is hereditary, but prime minister is not. King’s position is hereditary so the qualities of a king can be random, like either clever or foolish, either violent or weak. However prime minister is chosen by the king over the other candidates who have already proved their qualities several times by passing the state exam, by experiencing various state affairs, by gaining colleagues’ support. Even if a king is incompetent, it is not easy to replace him. However, the prime minister in charge of the politics can be replaced easily if common people suffer from his politics. For the sake of the people, he thought, it would be better to appoint more easily replaceable authorities in charge of politics. That’s his basic logic.

Then, what’s the difference between Goryeo‘s Dodang system and Jung Do-Jeon’s prime minister-centric system? Well, quite different. Most of all, Joseon’s king should be a competent Confucian scholar himself. It is well-known fact that Joseon’s kings should study, work, discuss nonstop for over 20 hours a day. Moreover, unlike Goryeo’s hereditary nobility, Joseon’s ruling class are more like the meritocracy. If 3 generations of your family have failed to pass the state exam, your whole family will be degraded from nobles to commoners. Therefore, every nobles fanatically forced their sons to study hard in order to survive. That’s one of the reasons why the enthusiasm for education in Korea is really that high up to these days.

As Yi Bang-Won killed Jung Do-Jeon in 1398, Yi Bang-Won’s absolute monarchy seems to have defeated Jung Do-Jeon’s constitutional monarchy. However, Yi Bang-Won kept Jeong Do-Jeon’s reforms intact for the most part, and Jung Do-Jeon’s Sadaebu-centric ideology had permeated and flourished even though his name had been a taboo for about 500 years. Most of all, Joseon’s politics gradually slanted to minister-centric politics while monarchs were losing power as time went by. Even Kangxi Emperor (강희제 康熙帝 1654~1722) of Qing Dynasty, one the greatest emperors in the history of China, met Joseon’s envoy and told him “Do you know your country’s biggest problem? Your king is too weak and the ministers are too powerful.” So, the final winner is Jung Do-Jeon after all.

However, there were flaws in his system. His good purpose had gradually tarnished and the system was degenerated into factional strifes among Sadaebu ministers. Jung Do-Jeon created a verification system to use the doubt and envy of Sadaebu, but as Cho-Young of Hwasadan told Bang-Won, Sadaebu also have a habit of creating “factions”. Jung Do-Jeon couldn’t imagine his check and balance system would cause extreme factional strifes which went as far as to exterminate the opposition party for trivial matters. The consumptive partisan brawls for hundreds of years had led to the collapse of Joseon dynasty.

tumblr_inline_o19our9azZ1s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Gyeongdeokgung Palace (경덕궁 敬德宮)

Yi Seong-Gye had two private residences in Gaegyung before he became a king. : Mokcheong masion (목청전 穆淸殿) and Gyeongdeok masion (경덕전 敬德殿). SFD writers described that Yi Bang-Won moved out to Gyeongdeok masion given by his father-in-law Min Je, but it is not true. It was Yi family’s house to begin with.

Yi Seong-Gye used the mansion as his temporary palace for a short period of time after Joseon was founded. Later, Yi Bang-Won became the mansion’s owner and raised its status to a palace. However, it had been burnt down during the Japanese invasion (1592~1598) and no traces of the original palace remained except for the main gate.

tumblr_inline_o1adsgs12K1s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Yacha (야차 夜叉)

Wikipedia

The English subtitle seems to translate Moo-Hyul’s new nickname as “The demon in Dowah mansion”, right? It is not demon but Yacha (야차 夜叉) in Korean. (“Yaksa” in Sanskrit, “Yasha” in Japanese)

Yacha is the divine guardian of the northern quarter and a beneficent god who protects the righteous in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist texts. However, when it was introduced to Korea, it gained ferocious images to trample evil spirits and killing people ruthlessly and bloodthirstily.

tumblr_inline_o19p080v5F1s5yhgo_540.jpg

■ Land reforms

I have already posted about it twice.

In September 1390, the land registers of corrupt nobles, being piled mountain-high in the street of Gaegyung, had been burnt for about 7 days. People watching this scene shed tears of joy.

As a result of the land reforms, the conservative privileged nobles lost their economic power and collapsed. Meanwhile, the reformist Sadaebu scholars gained economic foundation under the new system, and the age of Sadaebu scholars had begun. The tax burden on commoners were lightened, but they couldn’t possess their own lands. (Boon-Yi’s dream was shattered.) King Gongyang lamented that Goryeo’s traditional land system was abolished, of all times, under his reign.

Of course, it is a fictional device for Jung Do-Jeon to set fire personally to the piled papers.

I am watching the drama of Empress of China. The story about the only female empress who ruled in china during the Tang dynasty and her self-proclaimed Zhou dynasty. She is similar to BW. She killed many people, tang royal family, and her own clan and children but ruled effectively. That;s why I don't have doubts with King Taejong for being ruthless.. When Empress Wu Zetian died, the throne was passed to her son Emperor Zhong-zhong, but he only ruled 5 years because he was poisoned by his wife Empress Wei and her lover Wu (Wu Zetian's nephew). That's how scary it is.. King Sejong is lucky to have a protective father like KIng Taejong, his father did everything for him and ruthlessly killed anyone whom he thought could be a hindrance to his son's rule. He doesn't care if he was hated by people. So that his son could become the greatest King and the country will achieve prosperity, that could be the most important for him.

Look how he loved his son, and doing everything for him, I could have believed that he really loved his wife, Queen Wonkyong..(just hoping:)) How sad it must be for King Taejong and Empress Wu Zetian, though they ruled effectively but still hated in the end cause the methods they used to consolidate their power and to rule.

@homura Thank you so much. I was waiting for you to give us the historical background. It is so very helpful. Love the picture of the 3 peaks.

In hindsight, I think, both of them were correct in their administrations during their times. It may not have been the right time for a minister-centrist government to be used for the founding of a new country because a very strong leader and a centralized government was needed then to stabilize and establish a new country. I think time, people and processes will naturally progress to what is necessary for their times and not without strife as that is what causes growth. Not only in Joseon but in the history of all countries. However, being that Bang Won was himself an adept Confucian scholar the seeds of a minister-centrist government were already planted in him. He was already rooted in it. He kept JDJ's reforms intact. A historical irony, it seems.

I re-read the land reforms. Once again JDJ knew his politics. It is the economy... I love Jo Joon character. I would say that in modern times he would be comparable to leading economist of the country. Just an opinion. They really had a good foundation for reformation. And how about that JDJ wrote about the minister centrist government 300 years before England. Hats off to JDJ.

As for my favorite son MH, the gentle giant I would call him the Guardian of Do Wha
