Ji Chang Wook’s Boundless Pursuits: From ‘Revolver’ to ‘Queen Woo’

20240802135006744wsss.jpg

This summer, Ji Chang Wook is captivating audiences with his diverse roles across various genres.

Following his success in Disney Plus’s The Worst of Evil and JTBC’s Welcome to Samdalri last year, Ji Chang Wook takes on a new character in the film Revolver, scheduled for release on August 7th. In the movie, Ji plays Andy, a deranged character with a penchant for cologne. Behind his clean-cut appearance, he vividly portrays a reckless and deficient man. His nuanced performance brings the gritty character to life, adding tension and dynamism to the film.

The actor’s portrayal in the teaser for the TVING original series Queen Woo is equally compelling. The historical action thriller centers on the struggle for the throne following the king’s sudden death, with factions vying for power and targeting the queen. Ji plays King Go Nam Moo, who opens the story with a powerful presence, capturing attention even in brief moments.

Returning to a historical drama for the first time in over a decade since Empress Ki, Ji transforms into the cold and stoic King Go Nam Moo, a stark contrast to his previous role as the maniacal King Tahwan. Complete with a beard and golden armor, his visual transformation creates an immersive character that dominates the battlefield and the narrative.

Ji Chang Wook, known for creating iconic characters in dramas, continues to expand his acting repertoire beyond romantic leads. His versatile performances offer a wide range of choices for fans, showcasing his reliable acting skills.

Additionally, the actor will appear in the My Name Is Gabriel episode, airing on August 16th, where he plays Pippe, a farmer at an agave plantation in Mexico. With his summer filled with movies, dramas, variety shows, commercials, and international projects, all eyes are on Ji Chang Wook’s multifaceted journey and his next reinvention.

Ji Chang Wook: The Unstoppable Star

Charismatic, versatile, and incredibly hardworking—Ji Chang Wook embodies all these qualities and more.

3c3bb9e81037fc115d2cd43c6905baf7-2.jpeg?

After a string of back-to-back projects, his dedication to his craft shines brighter than ever. As a devoted fan, I’ve been following his journey since I first discovered him in Suspicious Partner in 2017. Although my introduction to him came a bit late, it gave me the perfect excuse to dive into his earlier works. My weekends soon became Ji Chang Wook marathons, a delightful catch-up on his past dramas.

Following a two-year break for his military service, Ji Chang Wook returned to the screen with unrelenting energy. He’s become one of the busiest actors of his generation, and his recent roles showcase his eagerness to tackle ever more challenging characters. There’s no slowing down for this talented actor—Ji Chang Wook is unstoppable.

The past years have introduced us to a myriad of characters brought to life by this stellar actor. Let’s take a look at the recent iconic roles Ji Chang Wook has headlined:

Choi Yong Pil in Welcome to Samdalri

In this heartwarming romcom, Ji Chang Wook stars as Choi Yong Pil, a weather forecaster from the quaint town of Samdal-ri on Jeju Island. Though talented enough to pursue a high-profile career in Seoul, he chooses to stay in his hometown to care for the elders and heal from a painful breakup with his first love, Cho Sam Dal, played by the charming Shin Hye Sun.

Welcome-To-Samdal-ri-Fashion-Ji-Chang-Wo

Ji Chang Wook is a delight to watch in this drama, showcasing a fresh, mature side in the romcom genre. His portrayal of Choi Yong Pil is both distinct and endearing, and his on-screen chemistry with Shin Hye Sun has captivated viewers, earning their enthusiastic approval. Welcome to Samdal-Ri climbed to the top of the K-drama rankings on Netflix during its airing.

Park Jun Mo in The Worst of Evil

Ji Chang Wook made his debut in a Disney-exclusive drama opposite Wi Ha Jun in The Worst of Evil. If I were to rank all the dramas I’ve seen him in, this would hands-down be his best work so far. Once again, he proves he owns the action genre, skillfully executing every grueling stunt while portraying a character that is both strong and vulnerable.

Director Han Dong Wook bagged the Best Director award in the 2024 Baeksang Awards for this work. While snubbed of a nomination for his work, Ji Chang Wook continues to prove that with or without an acting award, he will continue to do well and deliver his best in every project.

Yoon Gyo Rye in If You Wish Upon Me

Inspired by a true story from the Make-A-Wish Foundation in The Netherlands, this drama marks Ji Chang Wook’s brave venture into the emotionally charged genre. Initially, I paused watching this series due to its heavy, emotional episodes, but later found healing in its heartfelt story. This role signaled a new depth in Ji Chang Wook’s acting portfolio, where he is mostly known for action and rom-com roles. His portrayal of Yoon Gyo Rye, a juvenile turned “miracle worker,” tells a relentless and touching story, showcasing his growth as an actor.

Spoiler

Ri Eul in The Sound of Magic

Based on the webtoon Annarasumanara by Ha Il-Kwon, Ji Chang Wook stars as the enigmatic magician Ri Eul in this musical drama. Truly an all-rounder, he acts and sings as the main character, bringing real “magic” to the screen. Acting alongside a younger generation of actors, Ji Chang Wook, as the seasoned sunbae, delivers a spectacular performance that reaffirms his esteemed status in the Korean entertainment industry.

The drama’s OST also made it onto my all-time favorite list, further highlighting the show’s enchanting appeal.

Through these roles, Ji Chang Wook continues to demonstrate his versatility and dedication, making each character unforgettable and further cementing his place in the hearts of fans worldwide.

*** The upcoming TVING series Queen Woo  is facing criticism even before its official release. Issues regarding historical accuracy have arisen. While some details, like the rare depiction of traditional neck guards from Goguryeo, are praised, the costumes have sparked controversy for their resemblance to Chinese styles. Notably, the character Eul Paso’s attire is entirely Chinese in design. Historical records show that Goguryeo clothing fastened on the left side and featured unique headgear, but in Queen Woo, Eul Paso is shown with right-fastening clothing and a Chinese-style topknot. The Goguryeo king traditionally wore multicolored robes, yet in the drama, both the king and queen are dressed in yellow outfits resembling those of Chinese emperors. Additionally, accessories and costumes appear more fitting for Chinese dramas set in the Warring States or Han dynasty, further fueling the controversy. Chinese social media platforms like Douban have reacted strongly, with comments such as, “It’s blatant theft” and many more -

*** Ji Chang-wook sent his Filipino supporters into happiness during his recent fan meeting in Manila titled “Moments with Ji Chang-wook.” He was dressed in a simple white Bench shirt and jeans. Chang-wook exuded an undeniable sexiness as he took the stage for the opener. The Araneta Coliseum erupted in deafening screams as he made his grand entrance. Though the fan meet was brief, running for only over an hour, Chang-wook made every moment count for up-close and personal interactions. Upon coming face-to-face with Chang-wook, one fan exclaimed, "Jesus, he’s so handsome!” and later told him, “‘Don’t stare at me.” He closed the evening with his performances of “Even Though I Loved You” from the musical “The Days,” and “Watch Over You” from his series “Healer.” Chang-wook expressed his gratitude to his fans, saying they gave him strength. “I’m actually very happy that it was a very fun fan meeting today. I think I gained a lot of strength because you guys loved it also. I also realized that I’d really love more opportunities to come to the Philippines to meet you more often.”   :poledance:

[Herald Review] ‘Revolver’ a slow-burning noir complete with icy protagonist, diverse characters

20240806050610_0.jpg

Contrary to what the title suggests, “Revolver” is not an action-packed revenge noir about a former policewoman on the trail of vengeance. Rather, it’s a thriller -- or even a psychodrama -- revolving around a fearless woman obsessed with one goal: Getting her money back.

Though ex-cop Ha Soo-young’s (Jeon Do-yeon) motive behind chasing after the some 700 million won ($509,447) she was promised in return for taking the rap and going to prison remains unclear to viewers, director Oh Seung-wook portrays Soo-young as a ruthless, cold-blooded woman who ultimately triumphs despite her unethical past.

As the simple plot develops, Jeon's build-up for her character’s arc throughout the 125-minute running time is well-calculated and gradual. She is a woman of few words, calm, understated and never sentimental. She is not someone consumed by rage. Rather, she is someone who sips her whiskey, takes out her revolver and stares at it. Though her empty eyes gradually turn icy, it doesn’t mean that she plans to use the gun to kill someone.

Some may find her one-by-one visits to people involved in the 700-million-won promise unnecessarily slow, but this development triggers a catharsis at the movie's climax when they have all been gathered together.

The climactic showdown between Soo-young and Andy (Ji Chang-wook) and his men is a solid note on which “Revolver” can end.

Reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino movie, all sorts of characters from extreme ends gather in one space, creating commotion in this black comedy-like scene. The meeting of Soo-young, Andy, Soo-young’s former colleague Dong-ho

(Kim Jun-han), a bar hostess Yoon-seon (Lim Ji-yeon) and her former partner Mr. Cho (Jung Man-sik) is the highlight of the movie's tragicomic elements, loosening the tension that had been sustained until then.

20240806050612_0.jpg

20240806050611_0.jpg

Besides Jeon, whose weighty acting once again leads the story, “The Glory” heroin Lim Ji-yeon’s portrayal of bar hostess Yoon-seon, revitalizes the story's development. Initially hired to monitor Soo-young, Yoon-seon grows sympathetic toward her and Lim's subtle expression of the characters' confusion -- around whether she is an enemy or an ally -- is well-transferred to the screen.

Ji's Andy, whose behavior is both supercilious and immature, is another eye-pleasing aspect of the movie. The actor's hysterical and sensitive portrayal of Andy brings the story to life, further justifying his actions to the audience when he reveals the twist in the end.

Special appearances by actors Lee Jung-jae and Jeon Hye-jin, whose roles and backgrounds are never fully explained, keep the movie’s mood mysterious.

“Revolver” opens in local theaters on Aug. 7.
