Im Si Wan 임시완

*** Lee Byung Hun revealed an anecdote involving Im Si Wan on the recent broadcast of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block. He shared various stories, including his relationship with Im Si Wan and talking about Im Si Wan’s visit to his house. He shared, “I might not show it, but I’m really awkward (when someone comes to my house). Im Si Wan really is a unique character. When he asks, ‘Can I come over sometime?’ he’s really straightforward about it. I couldn’t refuse. When we actually meet, there’s an awkward energy since we don’t know each other’s lives well. One thing about Si Wan is that he stares right into your eyes. He asks questions like, ‘What do you usually eat in the morning?’ to which I replied, ‘Probably whatever you eat.'” Then he commented, “He asks questions that you’d never expect. Eating dinner together, I thought he was such a unique guy. His affability, warmth, and focus on people must be the best in the country.” He drew laughter by adding, “I bumped into him again a few months later, and he said he would come over again. He must have liked my house.”   :heart2beat:

3 domestic films ready to compete at Chuseok holiday box office

By Kwak Yeon-soo

Three domestic films are set to hit local theaters next month to attract film buffs ahead of Chuseok, Korea's autumn thanksgiving holiday. It is an important period for Korea's film industry as it is one of the country's longer holidays along with the Lunar New Year holiday, which fall in January or February.

This year, Chuseok will be a four-day extended holiday over the weekend, running from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1.

With the arrival of highly anticipated films like "Cobweb", "Road to Boston" and "Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman," all boasting substantial budgets and needing significant ticket sales to break even, the box office will likely witness tough competition.

"Road to Boston," starring Ha Jung-woo and Im Si-wan, is about Korean marathon runners who participated in Boston Marathon in 1947 after Korea had been liberated from Japan in 1945. It was inspired by the true story of Suh Yun-bok, who won the 1947 Boston Marathon with a world record time.

Korea's box office reached around 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels in the first half of 2023, according to data released by the Korean Film Council.

The total box-office revenue for the first six months of the year period was 606.7 billion won ($474.5 million), the equivalent of 72.5 percent of the same period in 2019. Compared to the first half of 2022, ticket sales have decreased by 5.9 percent. Admissions rose 29.9 percent to hit 58.39 million.

Upcoming film “Road to Boston” has shared a new poster and teaser!

“Road to Boston” tells the story of Korean national marathoners who eagerly want to compete in an international marathon event for the first time after the liberation of Korea. The Boston Marathon is a prestigious marathon event that boasts a lengthy history and prestige and is held every year on the third Monday of April ever since it started in 1897. In the film “Road to Boston,” the journey and anecdotes of the very first runners from Korea who overcome the chaotic national situation after liberation will unfold.

The released poster depicts historic moments in the lives of the 1936 Berlin Olympics gold medalist Sohn Kee Chung (Ha Jung Woo) and the 1947 Boston Marathon national team member Suh Yun Bok (Im Siwan). Despite winning the gold medal with a new world record time of two hours, 29 minutes, and 19 seconds during the Japanese colonial rule, Sohn Kee Chung is captured with a dejected facial expression while carrying a flowerpot. On the other hand, Suh Yun Bok, who is captured with a Korean flag attached to his shirt, is running for the first time since the liberation of Korea amid intense attention from reporters and spectators from around the world.

The words on the poster read, “I am a marathoner for Korea,” heightening viewers’ curiosity about Suh Yun Bok and Sohn Kee Chung’s journey to Boston in 1947 and the story behind it.

*** In "Actors On A Journey", JTBC is offering some good variety fare. Another show I’m interested in is Actors On a Journey that sees dong-gap buddies Im Si Wan and Jung Hae in heading. Reportedly both are whisky lovers, so they definitely travelled to the right place. The show kicks off August 23.   :yaaa:

Prolific actors ready to compete at Chuseok box office

Another peak time for box office competition, besides the summer holidays and Lunar New Year is Chuseok, the Korean version of Thanksgiving. As this year’s Chuseok will be an extended holiday over the weekend from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, even more moviegoers are expected to hit the cinema.

“Road to Boston” (Lotte Entertainment)“Road to Boston” (Lotte Entertainment)

Next on the list is “Road to Boston,” a biographical film shedding light on the story of Korean marathoner Sohn Kee-jung and his preparation for the first international marathon held after World War II. Featuring Ha Jung-woo as Sohn and Yim Si-wan as fellow competitor Seo Yoon-bok, the film was helmed by Kang Je-gyu, who has been behind various hit films including “Shiri” (1999), “Brotherhood” (2004) and “Take Off” (2009).

“Road to Boston” had already wrapped up filming in January 2020 and will finally be presented to audiences on Sept. 27.

Industry insiders hope to see the Chuseok holiday season create momentum to pull up staggering sales at the local box office, despite competitive releases of tentpole films this summer. Only “Smugglers” and “Concrete Utopia” have or are expected to surpass their breakeven point, at around 4 million tickets per film.

Korean Film Council data showed that the number of tickets sold for Korean films stood at about 3.32 million, around half the level compared to July last year at 6.35 million. Over the same period, the number of cinemagoers who watched foreign films was some 19 million, an increase by 1 million tickets.
