Some Of Your Favorite Korean Actors Were Exempted From Mandatory Military Service

 

 

South Korea's implementation of mandatory military service has been a topic of interest for many outsiders. The conscription states that all male citizens between the ages of 18 to 30 are required to render 20 months of enlisting in the military. For fans of Hallyu culture, this means bidding a temporary goodbye to their favorite acts for roughly two years.

 

Though, due to a varying set of reasons, some exemptions have been made. Ahead, we list down nine notable actors who weren't obliged to serve.

 

 

3. Kim Woo Bin

Kim Woo Bin, known for dramas like The Heirs, Uncontrollably Fond, Our Blues, and Black Knight, was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in May 2017. This exempted the then-28 year old from military service. Fortunately, he has since fully recovered from the cancer and has made his on-screen comeback.

*** Kim Woo Bin made a public appearance at an official event, showcasing his triumphant return to health. The pivotal force behind Kim Woo-bin's return to the screen was none other than director Choi Dong-hoon. Prior to his illness, they had a collaborative project in progress. Despite the setback, the director chose not to replace Kim Woo-bin. The collaborative project faced adversity as production costs were incurred, and filming had commenced before Kim Woo-bin's illness. Rather than opting for a replacement, the team decided to put the project on hold. The director, Choi Dong-hoon affirmed that the movie couldn't proceed without Kim Woo-bin. Upon learning of Kim Woo-bin's complete recovery, Choi Dong-hoon wasted no time in reaching out to him with a new scenario. The director humorously stated, "Now you have to film a movie with me, right? I will make you a national dad."

In the second part of the “Alienoid” films, time-traveling swordsmen and Taoists are brought together around a holy sword as the story from the first film comes to a close.

 

Actor Ryu Jun-yeol plays Mureuk and Kim Tae-ri portrays Lee Ahn, two of the central characters in “Alienoid 2,” set in the present and in the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). Aliens have been trapped inside human bodies in the present time, while a time portal has been opened in the past that allows characters to travel to the future. Only 48 minutes are left until the portal is closed again and an alien material blows up all of human civilization.

 

“Alienoid 2” comes from director Choi Dong-hoon, who made the first “Alienoid” film and is behind some of the biggest hits in recent Korean film: “The Thieves” (2012) and “Assassination” (2015), which both garnered more than 10 million ticket sales, as well as numerous other hits including “Tazza: The High Rollers” (2006), which attracted 6.84 million viewers, and “Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard” (2009), which saw 6.13 million.

*** Although Kim Woo Bin’s role is somewhat limited in "Alienoid 2", Thunder still manages to win the audience’s hearts with its cheerful and humorous vibe. “Alienoid 2” deserves praise for its visual effects and costume design. The action scene and tech element are handled with finesse. Action scenes are few and not very intense compared to the first one. “Alienoid” is probably the most expensive franchise in the history of Korean cinema, with a budget of 70 billion won for two films. According to stats from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), “Alienoid 2” has pulled in 5 million USD worldwide as of January 15.

The long-awaited second part of “Alienoid” is off to a strong start at the box office!

 

“Alienoid 2” (also known as “Alienoid: The Return to the Future)” is the second part of the 2022 sci-fi fantasy film “Alienoid.” The movie’s star-studded cast includes Ryu Jun Yeol, Kim Tae Ri, Kim Woo Bin, Honey Lee, Yum Jung Ah, Jin Sun Kyu, Jo Woo Jin, Kim Eui Sung, Yoon Kyung Ho, and more.

 

Ever since its release on January 10, “Alienoid 2” has enjoyed an uninterrupted 11-day streak at No. 1 at the Korean box office—and on the morning of January 21, it officially surpassed 1 million moviegoers.

*** Kim Woo Bin kicks off filming for Netflix "Everything Will Come True"  reuniting with Suzy. He posted a picture of his character name placard on the table of what appears to be the script-reading for the drama. I cannot wait for this drama. I hope this is a well-written drama than their 1st work together.      But, considering the pair already have a ton of chemistry, we expect that to be replicated for "Everything Will Come True."  The series is expected to be released sometime this year, but that I see the K-drama arrive sometime in late this year. This will be released exclusively on Netflix, and will not be distributed weekly on tvN. Can't wait for this.
