[MBC]
The masterpiece drama that was popular in the early 2000s is being reborn as a 2024 version on Wavve through the hands of the original author.

Online video service Wavve announced on the 9th that it is carrying out the 'New Classic' project to remake the original works into 2024 versions with the main staff of MBC's 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon' and KBS's 'I'm Sorry, I Love You', which are considered masterpieces from the 2000s. The main staff
of the original works, including Director Kim Yoon-chul of MBC's 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon' and Director Lee Hyung-min of KBS's 'I'm Sorry, I Love You', will directly participate in the production, maintaining the original quality while reflecting the current viewing trend, reinterpreting the existing 16-episode version of the drama into 6-8 episodes of 40-50 minutes each, and providing it in the form of an OTT series. 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon' and 'I'm Sorry, I Love You', which will be presented by Wavve, are scheduled to be released in the second half of this year. As they are veteran directors who have been actively working on projects to date, attention is focused on how they will once again create masterpieces. Director Kim Yoon-chul has presented various genres of directing in addition to 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon', 'Woman of Dignity', and 'Battle of Happiness', and director Lee Hyung-min has been actively communicating with viewers through new genre attempts, starting with 'Let's Go to School, Sangdoo' in 2003 and more recently with 'The Girl Who Differs Between Day and Night' and 'Strong Woman Do Bong-soon'.

Technological improvements will also be made to increase users' viewing immersion. The visual enjoyment will be enhanced by upscaling and DI renewal of existing content provided in SD to 4K, and the viewing convenience will be improved so that users can enjoy the library as if it were the latest work through technological upgrades across the content, such as improved sound quality and subtitle provision.

Wavve's marketing group manager said, "Just as classic movies and books are constantly being consumed in revised editions, we wanted to give well-made dramas a new life by reflecting contemporary trends and technological prowess," adding, "This will be a well-made work that will provide a different kind of enjoyment by comparing the originals to them, and a fresh enjoyment to viewers who haven't seen it yet."

Meantime, Wavve plans to expand the scope of its offering in the future by remastering additional works from the early 2000s in 4K, starting with these two works, so that users can watch more diverse works in clearer picture quality.

Kim Sun-ah X Hyun Bin 'Kim Sam-soon' returns..Wave, first masterpiece selected

2024.08.22

0003260139_001_20240822093711853.jpg?typ

[STAR NEWS]
The girl we loved back then, Kim Sam-soon, is back. Online video service Wavve has released the 2024 version open poster and teaser video of 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon', which will open the 'New Classic Project'.

'[Director's Cut] My Name is Kim Sam-soon 2024 (4K)', which was selected as the first masterpiece by Wavve's 'New Classic Project', will premiere on September 6th. 'My Name is Kim Sam-soon', which is referred to as 'the starting point of romantic comedy' and 'romantic comedy legend', gained national popularity when it was aired in 2005 for its groundbreaking attempts such as a female protagonist who changed the standards of beauty and took charge of both work and love, cider lines that expressed her feelings very honestly, and a realistic open ending.

The poster released on the 22nd contains a lovely 're-opening' invitation from pastry chef Kim Sam-soon (played by Kim Sun-ah), who caused an unprecedented syndrome at the time. Not only the commemorative cake announcing the '2024' version, but also the theme, "Shall we pretend to be in love one more time?" is drawing attention. This is because it delivers the message that the romance that started with the sweet proposal of Hyun Jin-heon (Hyun Bin), Kim Sam-soon's employer and the owner of the French restaurant 'Bon Appétit', has been reborn as a 2024 version. The teaser video that was released together depicts the sweet tiki-taka of Kim Sam-soon and Hyun Jin-heon, who have been upgraded even more after 19 years. You can get a glimpse of devices that are frequently introduced in the current romantic comedy genre, such as the confident female protagonist Kim Sam-soon anytime and anywhere, Hyun Jin-heon who is a 'bad guy' but has a charm that you can't hate, and a love that starts with a contract.

0003260139_002_20240822093711911.jpg?typ

The 2024 version of “My Name is Kim Sam Soon," the foundation of romantic comedy, will reflect the current viewing trend by reconstructing the existing 16-episode drama into an 8-episode, 60-minute series.

Wave explains that they have increased the immersion by strengthening the narratives of the main characters and inserting an ending with a so-called "hook" that makes viewers curious about the next episode. In addition, the viewing convenience will be increased like the latest work by upgrading the picture and sound quality and providing subtitles in the form of an OTT series.

Meanwhile, Wave is currently working on the "New Classic Project" in which the director of "My Name is Kim Sam Soon" and "I'm Sorry, I Love You" will work with key staff to remake the original work into a 2024 version.
They have also prepared a package for the work that provides clearer picture quality by upscaling the picture quality of existing content to 4K. The 'New Classic Project Part 1' lineup will apply upscaling technology to 'Palace (4K)', 'Full House (4K)', and 'Coffee Prince (4K)', and will be released along with 'My Name is Kim Sam Soon'.

7 K-Drama Stars Who Impressed With Their Dual Roles

Aug 20, 2024
by pujatalwar

Double the fun or double the trouble? Dual roles are an often used and familiar trope in movies, and K-dramas have also given us plenty of situations where leads have their own lookalike, which adds to the twists and turns in the narrative. Sometimes it’s a good or evil twin, or a doppelganger across time and space, and in some situations it’s an extension of their personality. Duality is also a way of showcasing the ultimate tryst between good and evil, strong and weak, which can be two sides of the same coin. Here are seven K-dramas where the leads gave us some impressive dual roles to remember.

“Hyde, Jekyll, Me”

Hyun-Bin-Hyde-Jekyll-Me.jpg

What’s better than one Hyun Bin? Two Hyun Bins in one drama! Seo Jin (Hyun Bin) is a rich, good-looking, and extremely arrogant CEO of a theme park. He’s a control freak who micromanages everything and lives life as per his terms. But not many know that it’s all a cover up! Seo Jin suffers from a dissociative personality disorder. Robin, who is a part of his fragmented personality, is an endearing personality. He is youthful with a playful streak. Ha Na (Han Ji Min), the new manager of the circus which performs at the amusement park, has an unpleasant encounter with Seo Jin on her first day at the job. But things get complicated when she meets the charming Robin, who is the polar opposite of the uptight Seo Jin. After four dating rumors, the same-age couple actors Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin got married and are now the parents of one child. They worked together in the 2018 film "Negotiation" and the 2019 tvN drama "Crash Landing on You." In "Negotiation," they portrayed a bloody battle between a kidnapper and a negotiator, and in "Crash Landing on You," they portrayed a sweet meeting between an officer and an heiress, and they have actually settled down in love.

The two were embroiled in a total of four dating rumors, including a photo of them shopping together in LA when the dramas were airing, and they became an official couple on January 1, 2021, admitting their relationship. They got married on March 31 of that year and gave birth to a healthy son on November 27, 2022. […]

12 Series That Will Get You Hooked on K-Dramas

With 'Squid Game' Season 2 coming Dec. 26, here are more great K-dramas to explore.

Ured feel-good series, and gritty crime mystery shows. If you like serialized stories, you’re going to like K-dramas. The trick is finding the right entry point.
Accordingly, we collected a handful of shows from within the last couple of decades that would be a good fit for the K-drama-curious. Consider this a starter pack with one example of different kinds of shows and sensibilities, each with a different set of hooks for American audiences. So if you’re ready to get yourself or a friend or family member into K-drama, here are some places to start.

“Crash Landing On You”

Apart from “Squid Game,” the K-drama that has most broken through with American audiences is probably “Crash Landing on You,” and it’s not hard to see why. The story combines a bit of the same class satire of the 1 percent that makes shows from “Succession” to “Dynasty” magnetic to watch with about as star-crossed a pair of lovers as you could have in  2024 — or more specifically, the year 2020, when the show first streamed and when lots of people all over the world were stuck at home with time to fantasize about a grand romance.

Son Ye-jin plays a South Korean heiress who, after losing control of her paraglider, finds herself stranded on the wrong side of the DMZ. She is discovered by an elite forces captain in the Korean People’s Army (Hyun Bin), who, instead of dealing with her by the book, helps smuggle her back to the South. Will she ever be the same? Will the many mines, literal and political, that separate them keep them apart forever? Will Hyun Bin somehow look progressively sexier just standing in place?
The answers to all of these questions are the main concerns of “Crash Landing on You,” but every character in this series is a delight.

Check this show out if you are into pulpy melodramas and the endangered species that is the American rom-com, but also if you appreciate strong subplots and side characters.

“Crash Landing on You” is available on Netflix.
