By Lee Narin | 2022.08.16

Actor Lee Jung Jae laughed after seeing photos of him and his lookalike dog put together.

On August 13, Lee Jung Jae and actor Jung Woo Sung gave a brief greeting at one movie theater in Seoul after the screening of their movie 'Hunt'.   During the greeting, one fan held up a panel with photos that have been going around viral online lately.  The photos were of Lee Jung Jae on August 7 episode of SBS' television show 'Master in the House', where he appeared in a unique style.   At that time, he matched a light pink suit with a pearl necklace.

Following the broadcast of this episode, one online community user took to a popular online community and shared a photo of a dog wearing a pink clothing and pearl necklace.   The uploader stated, "I made this dog my profile photo on KakaoTalk (the most-used mobile messenger in Korea) a few days ago, but after seeing Lee Jung Jae looking exactly like this dog on television, I quietly changed my profile photo to another one."   Since the dog's fashion as well as the face remind much of Lee Jung Jae in the recent episode of 'Master in the House', these photos quickly spread online.

Upon seeing these photos that the fan held up for Lee Jung Jae to see during the greeting, he pointed at it and burst out laughing.   Jung Woo Sung checked out what the fan was holding, then asked the fan with a huge smile, "Umm... Why is a photo of a dog wearing a pink clothing and pearl necklace next to a photo of Lee Jung Jae in 'Master in the House'? Why did you place them next to each other?"   While Jung Woo Sung asked, Lee Jung Jae continued to laugh next to him, keeping his eyes on the photos.

[SBS Star] Lee Jung Jae Says to Have Delayed His Shoulder Surgery for Over 2 Years Due to Busy Schedule

By Lee Narin | 2022.08.17

94A28140-D1FD-4CEF-A464-1BF61E5C8E0E.jpg

A lot of people are worried about actor Lee Jung Jae's health at the moment.

On August 17, industry insiders revealed that Lee Jung Jae ruptured his ligament on the left shoulder while filming his movie 'Deliver Us from Evil' in the end of 2019.   Although his doctor said he needed to get surgery, but he refused to receive one and went back to film the movie only in three days of rest.   Even after the movie was released, he still could not get surgery, because he was scheduled to shoot Netflix's series 'Squid Game' and movie 'Hunt'.

Back in one interview in 2020, Lee Jung Jae said, "If I have surgery, I won't be able to use my left arm for about nine months. A great number of staff and actors/actresses prepared hard for the projects I'm in. I can't postpone their schedule because of my surgery."

Then in last year during the shooting of 'Hunt', he pulled his hamstring; however, he once again chose not to get surgery.   He walked around the filming site with crutches for about 10 days in order for the shooting to be successfully completed.   He still needs to get surgery on his shoulder as well as leg, but his schedule seems to be too hectic.

Following 'Squid Game', Lee Jung Jae has been attending lots of events in different countries, and he is currently busy promoting 'Hunt'.

At the end of the promotions of 'Hunt', he is planned to begin shooting the second season of 'Squid Game'.

In his recent interview, Lee Jung Jae stated, "When I wrap up 'Hunt' promotions, I've got to continue attending events for 'Squid Game'―it's still ongoing. I've got to go to the 'Toronto International Film Festival'."    He continued, "I haven't even had time to have a glass of beer after the VIP premiere of 'Hunt'. I certainly do feel weaker these days. I don't feel as strong now."

LEE JUNG-JAE AS RAY IN ‘DELIVER US FROM EVIL’

Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae is set to star in a spin-off from director Hong Won-chan’s South Korean action thriller Deliver Us From Evil, produced as a global OTT series.

Tentatively titled Ray, after Lee’s vengeful assassin character in the 2020 film, the series is to be co-produced by Hive Media Corp, which produced the feature, and Artist Studio, which produced Lee’s directorial debut Hunt as well as Netflix sci-fi series The Silent Sea.

The original crime action film, starring Hwang Jung-min and Lee, was released in August 2020 and took $33.8m at the box office from 4.35 million admissions in the first summer of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The series will follow Ray, a mysterious Korean killer from Japan who tracks down Hwang’s character in Deliver Us From Evil to take brutal revenge. The series will range from the titular character’s origins to the battles he wages with villains around the world who become his targets.

Lee will reprise his role and will be producing the series, which is at treatment stage. He is also considering directing episodes.

Hong is attached as creator. Further talent attached includes scriptwriter Kim Bo-Tong, whose credits include Netflix hit D.P.; commercials director Shin Won-seok; and cinematographer Hong Kyung Pyo, who shot Deliver Us From Evil as well as myriad others including Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Broker.

Leading Korean studio CJ ENM, which backed and distributed the original film, is also in talks with the production companies as to how it might collaborate on the series. In North America, the studio has the branded zone CJ ENM Picks on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, but it is yet to be known if this series will go to that platform.

The production companies announced today that the project is to start pre-production “in earnest” in 2023.

‘Squid Game’ Star Lee Jung-jae to Reprise Role as Tattooed Killer From ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ in Series Spin-Off

Hive Media Corp.

Lee Jung-jae, the star of hit Netflix series “Squid Game,” is to reprise his role as a manic killer in “Ray,” a TV series spun off from 2020 Korean action-horror film “Deliver Us From Evil.”

Korean media sources report that Lee will star in and co-produce the series through his own Artist Studio company and Hive Media, producer of “Deliver Us From Evil.” Variety has reached out for further details.

In the original movie, Hwang Jung-min played In-Nam, a former black ops agent who travels to Thailand to investigate an abduction. There he is pursued by Lee’s character Ray, a Korean-Japanese ruffian whose brother had been killed by In-Nam. Both heavily tattooed and charming, Ray embarks on a bloody rampage of revenge.

“Ray” is expected to develop the back-story of the seductively evil Ray, establishing how he became such a cruel killer and setting him up against other villains around the world.

The series is being written by Kim Bo-tong (“D.P.”) and is to be co-directed by Shin Woo-seok and Hong Won Chan, the original director of “Deliver Us From Evil.”

Ace cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo – whose credits include “Parasite,” “Broker,” “Burning,” “Snowpiercer” and “The Wailing” – will pick up the reins from “Deliver Us From Evil” and act as director of photography.

Pre-production is reported to begin in 2023. No streaming platform attachment has yet been announced.

“Deliver Us From Evil” was released in August 2020, during a break in Korea’s pandemic lockdown measures and scored an impressive $28.9 million from 4.36 million spectators.

Lee is currently riding high as director-producer and star of “Hunt,” a 1980s-set espionage drama that debuted in Cannes. The film received a mixed reaction in Cannes, with several foreign reviewers calling it confusing. Lee has since re-cut it for international audiences, with a new version set to play in Toronto.

Korean audiences have had no such problem with the intra-Korean complexities and have put the film on top of the theatrical box office for the past two weekends. Since release on Aug. 10, it has notched up gross revenues of $26 million from 3.35 million ticket sales.

Lee recently became the first Asian performer to win the best actor award in a streaming series, drama at the 2022 Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards. He is also attached to a second season of “Squid Game.”

Four big-budget K-movies in theaters do not impress audiences

By Hyo-Ju Son (hjson@donga.com) | August. 26, 2022 07:59

While the vibes of fall have just become obvious to us, there seems to be a wintry chill in the air at the box office. Since four new blockbuster K-movies were released for the summer season, the most lucrative period in a year, their sales have not met elevated expectations of the market. Dumbfounded at mediocre performance at the box office, major distributors seem reluctant to decide when to release a long line of heavily invested movies that have piled up since the pandemic began.

As of Thursday, ‘Confidential Assignment 2: International’ was the only blockbuster with a net production cost of more than 10 billion won, which was confirmed to be released this fall (scheduled on Sept. 7). Only some low-budget films such as ‘Honest Candidate 2’ and ‘Life Is Beautiful’ (scheduled on Sept. 28) wait to be premiered soon.

Only ‘Hansan: Rising Dragon’ reached a break-even point with a total of 6.82 million audiences as of Wednesday among the four costly K-films currently in theaters including ‘Hunt,’ ‘Emergency Declaration’ and ‘Alienoid.’ However, it has not lived up to all the buzz. Even before ‘Hansan: Rising Dragon’ was first released, critics had high expectations of the forthcoming film possibly selling more than 10 million movie tickets. In fact, it received positive reviews for a while right after its release. Added to this, ‘The Admiral: Roaring Currents,’ prior to ‘Hansan: Rising Dragon,’ brought in 17.6 million moviegoers, making it the most-watched film in Korean cinema history. However, it has not turned out to be as successful as expected.

The disappointingly poor report card at the box office this summer may be attributable to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and too expensive movie tickets, which may have restricted moviegoers to only a few films that they decide to watch selectively.

Film distributors seem taken aback by lack of enthusiasm at the box office as they have planned to use the four big players as an attention gatherer and lead audiences to a long-awaited pile of blockbusters this fall. “As audiences may not be happy with a less reasonable ticket price than before, they seem to have a brutally critical view of any movie that they find disappointing,” said a film distributor. “We find it hard to stay confident enough to release any film on the long waiting list unless it is very highly likely to be a mega hit.”

“If any of the four promising films had turned out to be a success, we distributors would have confidently chosen what’s the next this fall,” said another industry insider. “The reality is that even ‘Hansan’ only ended up with a mediocre number, leaving most of the market discouraged.”

A spinoff series of action-packed Korean thriller “Deliver Us From Evil’ will start production in 2023, according to the local production firm of the original film, Hive Media Corp.

The new TV series titled “Ray,” being created for a streaming platform, will be produced alongside Artist Studio, a production company known for works like Netflix series “The Silent Sea” and actor Lee Jung-jae’s directorial debut feature “Hunt.”

The original film revolves around hit man In-nam (played by Hwang Jung-min), who aims to finish what he promised would be his last job before fleeing Japan. But In-nam unexpectedly becomes mixed up in a case in Thailand. In Bangkok, a mysterious and barbaric killer named Ray (Lee) -- also known as “the butcher” -- chases In-nam down to avenge the death of his brother.

The new TV series will mainly center on Ray, unveiling the story of how he became a reckless killer as well as his fights with various new villains from all over the world.

According to Hive Media Corp., Lee is considering the role of the Ray character again in the new series as well as taking part in the project as producer and director.

Filmmaker Hong Won-chan, who directed the original movie, will also join the project as one of the creators.

Author Kim Bo-tong of hit webtoon “D.P.” and commercial director Shin Woo-seok will also take part in the project, according to the production firm.

Shin’s creative studio rose to fame with witty Canon commercials released on YouTube in which celebrity chef Choi Hyun-seok and former soccer player Ahn Jung-hwan are killed by a bear while trying to take photos of it.

Also, Hong Kyung-pyo, the director of photography for director Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar winner “Parasite,” will be filming the new series.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic situation, “Deliver Us From Evil” sold over 4.35 million tickets here in 2020.
