Late Autumn' films in mid-winter on Whidbey

"Late Autumn" film extras and crew members snack and stay warm inside the

Keystone Cafe while stars Hyun Bin and Tang Wei film a scene outside near the boat launch.

The Keystone Cafe transformed from sleepy, ferry-side bistro to star-studded movie set Tuesday as the cast and crew of "Late Autumn" descended on the business.

Cafe owners Ray and Christy Kellison received a call last fall requesting a one-day “lease” of the Central Whidbey cafe, located in a scenic spot across from the ferry dock, for use as a movie set for the Korean film. The starry-eyed couple and their son, Kole, continued to serve food and drink to regular customers, film extras and crew members during outdoor filming segments yesterday. “It's good for business,” Christy said.

Set trucks rode the ferry over and began arriving on scene about 5 am Tuesday, said Line Producer Mischa Jakupcak as she sat at a corner table facing the ferry dock, folders and cell phone spread out before her. The team planned to make the most of their day, then pack up and move out by 4:30 pm for their return trip to Seattle.

“It's a perfect location,” she said of the cafe's proximity to the ferry landing and the picturesque surroundings. "

Jakupcak describes the movie, starring South Koren actor Hyun Bin and Chinese actress Tang Wei, as a trilingual “melancholy love story.”

The film is mostly in English, but also includes a little Korean and Chinese, she said. Most of the independent movie's filming schedule is kept secret to keep Bin's very dedicated and persistent fan base at bay.

The Whidbey Island scene will appear toward the end of the film, she said. The seven-week project is currently in its sixth week and includes locations such as Pike's Place Market, Pioneer Square, Queen Anne and Capitol Hill, among other well-known Seattle-area neighborhoods. The cast and crew also spent some time filming in Monroe.

If all goes as planned, “Late Autumn” will debut in three months at the Cannes International Film Festival in France from May 12 through the 23.

Seems like Late Autumn finish with shooting by today :D

In star-studded 'Late Autumn,' Seattle plays starring role

A movie star may have spotted you at Northgate Mall these past couple months. But you probably didn't notice.

Chinese actress Tang Wei is in Seattle filming "Late Autumn," a drama also starring South Korean heartthrob Hyun Bin that's set to wrap Monday. Like her co-star, Wei couldn't step on the streets of Hong Kong without being mobbed. So when she's not filming or sneaking into Asian restaurants, she likes to sit in and around Northgate and bask in her anonymity.

"Free, free, free!" the film's producer, Joo-Ick Lee, said from the production office on Westlake Avenue. "It's like a temporary holiday."

Since filming began in January, "Late Autumn" has filmed in many of Seattle's central neighborhoods. It's caught the attention of neighborhood news sites and inspired a bit of a citywide mystery: Why is a South Korean movie shooting in Seattle? And why are they filming everywhere?

Residents of Ballard, Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, Belltown, Fremont, downtown, the Central District and Pioneer Square have all spotted cast and crew on their turf. Even Bellevue, Whidbey Island and Monroe have played host to the Asian superstars.

On Thursday, Lee explained why: because Seattle is a character in his story.

'Seattle is the third role'

"Late Autumn" is loosely based on the popular 1966 South Korean film "Full Autumn," about a romance between a woman on leave from prison and a man on the run. Asian filmmakers have reworked this premise before, but producer Lee and renowned South Korean director Kim Tae-yong are the first to take it out of Asia.

They picked the U.S. because they want to have a global reach, and no place is more familiar to the movie-watching world. They settled on Seattle after years of scouting. The city is unusual, hard to replicate, Lee said. Beautiful, but not "too pretty." Full of character, but not full of itself.

Our weather closed the deal, Lee said. A moody climate tells a richer story.

"There are few places in the U.S. where you cannot find anyplace else like it," Lee said. "Where do you find another place and tell it is Seattle?"

The film's characters speak in English, by the way, with only some Korean and Chinese. Wei's character grew up in Seattle and returns on special leave from prison for her mother's funeral. When she meets Bin's character, a transplant, she winds up sharing her memories. So they go to the Pike Place Market, the Fremont Troll, even Seattle Center's Fun Forest.

The "Late Autumn" crew filmed there just as the longstanding amusement park was being taken down for the last time, strengthening the film's themes of broken dreams and uneasy redemption.

"Seattle is the third role," Lee said. "You cannot separate Seattle from the story."

At first, Lee had no trouble taking Tang Wei and Hyun Bin to Seattle's Chinese and Korean restaurants (Bin "loves" the Chinese food here, Lee said). Then word began to spread in the local Asian community. One night, at a Bellevue restaurant, Lee looked out the window and saw a big group of fans had gathered outside, waiting for Hyun Bin. Bin thought of sneaking out, then saw an 11-year-old girl waiting in the crowd. It was getting late.

"He went out and autographed for all those people so she could go home early," Lee said.

Shooting on "Late Autumn" is set to wrap on Monday. Variety reported that the film was aiming for a premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but Lee, who's spent five years developing the project, doesn't want to make any promises.

"I'm so grateful to the city of Seattle, because they've been so cooperative," Lee said, looking at his office window to Lake Union.

Bin and Wei will likely miss the anonymity when they return to South Korea and China. Lee -- he'll miss it all.

"If I were to live here, I would rent some house on Whidbey Island," he said. "I'd go into the U-District for coffee, then go downtown for a movie."

Hyun-bin and tang-wei wrap filming on Late-autumn remake

Hyun Bin will no longer be in Seattle, as filming has wrapped on Late Autumn, the remake of a ’60s classic that co-stars Tang Wei.

The film had begun shooting in the Seattle are on January 12 (where Hyun Bin’s girlfriend, Song Hye-gyo, reportedly visited him). The film wrapped with its epilogue March 1, which was shot on Whidbey Island, which is part of Puget Sound and located 30 miles from Seattle. Although Hyun Bin wasn’t featured in the last shoot, he stuck around while his co-star filmed her final scene, and the crew toasted the end of production with some champagne.

The 1960 film, now lost, is considered a masterpiece by director Lee Man-hee, and tells the story of a three-day love affair between a woman who is granted special leave from prison and a man on the run. The film is a co-production with an American company (hence the Stateside shoot) and is directed by Family Ties‘ Kim Tae-yong. The film is being planned for a release in the latter half of 2010.

Actor Kim Jun-seong on ‘Late Autumn’

Kim’s latest film, “Late Autumn,” may be more in synch with his gentle persona. In this remake of director Lee Man-hee’s 1966 original, Kim plays the heroine’s first love, a role he was happy to take on, partly because Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution” actress Tang Wei was playing the lead.

“I didn’t hesitate to do the movie,” Kim said. “I get to play a Chinese guy first of all, which is really cool. I also get to act opposite Tang Wei.”

“Just acting with her, makes me want to do my best,” he said.

Of co-star Hyun, Kim said that he “didn’t have many scenes with” him and that he was “quiet at first.” Once they broke the ice, Kim discovered “he is a man’s man.”

“There is something very immovable about him, like a tree,” he said. “And it shows in his acting, because it comes off as very natural and genuine.”

The upcoming flick, shot in Seattle and slated to hit theaters worldwide in autumn, touches upon the pasts of Tang’s and Hyun’s characters.

official description

Late Autumn is an enchanting tale of two unlikely misfits who fall in love, despite all odds. Director Kim Tae-Yong’s subtle and nuanced direction elicits wonderful performances from his lead actors, crafting a lyrical and captivating love story.

The film opens with Anna (Wei Tang), a young woman wandering through the streets of a Seattle suburb. Her face bruised and her clothes torn, she’s clearly been badly beaten by someone. We soon learn that, in self-defence, she has killed her abusive husband. Seven years later, Anna is in a US prison, serving out the sentence for her crime, until the day that she gets a phone call from her sister. Her mother has died, and Anna has a two-day leave from prison to take a bus to Seattle to attend the funeral.

As the bus pulls away, one last passenger scrambles aboard. Hoon (Bin Hyeon), a well-dressed young man, doesn’t have enough money to pay for his ticket and asks to borrow the remaining thirty dollars from Anna. She reluctantly agrees, and so begins a strange and beautiful friendship. Anna is withdrawn and reluctant to speak. Hoon draws her out of her shell with his charm and amicable nature, making her laugh for the first time in years. But Hoon has a secret. Someone is after him and wants to kill him. Will forty-eight hours be enough time for this convict and this fugitive to make a connection and escape from their loneliness?

Filled with whimsy, pathos and beauty, Late Autumn is simultaneously delightful and sobering. Wei Tang is entrancing as Anna, appearing as a woman who was emotionally and physically wounded, apprehensively learning to love again. Bin Hyeon is charming as Hoon, a man with a shady past who makes a once-in-a-lifetime connection.

Delightful and heart-warming, Late Autumn is an accomplished film by a talented director.

Just came back from a screening of Late Autumn. Last day of the Toronto International Film Festival.

It was a good movie, although nothing so spectacular with the plot.

The scenary of Seattle was beautiful and I really like the background music.

There wasn't much dialogue and at times I found it to be frustrating because the plot really didn't develop throughout the movie.

Hyun Bin was really good - his character was flirtatious and mischievous. Again, not alot of dialogue, but he was very playful and convincing. His English isn't too bad, but he didn't have long sentences to say anyway. I thought he played the character really well.

Tang Wei was amazing! Very dark and quiet but I liked her character alot more than Hyun Bin's. I never realized how pretty she is, reminds me of Jung Ryu Won.

Their chemistry was really good too! Their interactions made it convincing that there was a love connection between the characters.

It's good, but nothing special. I'm very impressed with Hyun Bin's acting for sure.
