this is a link to a review of the movie written by a normal viewer. Director Lee said it is 80% close to story and recommended the blog.

If editing was done properly, the movie would have been a box office success.

Thank you for the link, yuzu!:) I translated the article as is and the plot seems convoluted. I do hope they re-edit it for the international viewers because I really liked the premise.

This is a personal opinion of the blogger and his interpretation of the story so there are lot of spoilers. If you want to watch the movie first and keep your personal interpretation then please don't read.^_^

[Notice] Movie 'Real' (Strong Spoiler) plot

I saw the movie real which I expected and anticipated today.

I was a bit worried because I heard that it was criticized at the same time as it opened.

I will leave my first movie review on my blog.

For this reason,

Majority of the critics complained of the film having no flow at all. Maybe this is the idea of people that do not understand.

Of course the appreciation and criticism of the movie is free.
Moreover, for those who have not yet seen the film, we hope to enjoy the movie without preconceived ideas.

For once the film has really breathtaking visuals.
Since the pre-promotion, "stylish visual beauty" was the most used expression to describe it.
It is a splendid image of a complex mystery and ambition centered around the silhouette of the main character (Kim Su-hyun).
It is eye catching and attracts attention.

photo865189.jpg

And when the main character (Kim Soo-hyun) first appeared, it is an impressive sound!
A striking beat of a strong beating heart is an important symbolism in the film's flow.
It is the right kind of music signalling when the ego of the hero, which is represented by the brutality and strength emerge.

Remember the two O'Clock~

The biggest reason for this film's divergence is that it is not a simple action noir but a psychological drama combined with psychological theme.

It is difficult to understand easily~    I have heard that a lot.

Why??

I will proceed with a good explanation, but staring at a naked Kim Soo-hyun, anyone would have missed the story.ㅡㅡ+++

Now ... now is the spoiler.
If you are yet to view the film, don't read.

Spoiler

First of all, the movie hero Jhang Tae Young (Kim Su Hyun) is an investigative journalist who covers the crime scene.
Along with the criminal investigator, No Yeom(Lee Kyung-young), he deeply infiltrates criminal organizations and works to destroy them.
Here in the film, the description, the daughter of No Yeom(Lee Kyung-young) is girlfriend of Jang Tae-young. Being a case where she is raped and drugged, it causes an incident leading to her death.

Moreover, Jang Taeyoung (Kim Suhyeon), during an event of drug coverage, becomes addicted to the new drug "Siesta".
In the wake of this case, his weakness leads to self-hatred and awakens his desire for power.
Jang Tae Young (Kim Su Hyun) may not know that the drug "Siesta" he was addicted to becomes the catalyst to awaken the inner character of Jang Tae-young (Kim Su-hyun).
(The opening scene is a stylish representation of the moment where his violent self was born, the dead girlfriend in the movie is his self/ego which comes for a while.)
Eventually Jang Taeyoung will have the personality represented by two kinds of characters - a strong man, the gangster and the investigative journalist.

After about three years of time, the violent self and gutsy Tae-young will rise up to the top of the underworld.
The film starts here.

The first scene is the consultation of the violent self Jang Taeyoung with psychiatrist (Lee Sung-min).
Because of this, the audience felt it somewhat difficult at first.

In any case, Jang Tae-young did not know why he has a dual personality, nor the violent ego born three years ago.
I think the personality of the investigative journalist is fake. Because of the help of a psychiatrist (Sungmin).
As the weak and unnecessary character of the investigative journalist commits suicide, so it's a kind of an implication that the violent ego is the 'self' that is left.

In the state of the personality of investigative reporter, this peaceful personality is destroyed when another vegetative patient admitted in the hospital is killed accidently by strangulation.

Progress is so easy. (For smooth story progression haha)

The original personality of Jang Tae-young disappears to the point where it is very empty. Straight up Violent Self.
He returns to his original position when he throws the iconic glasses, the symbol of the journalist's personality.
(This scene is the symbol that the personality of the investigative journalist dies and only the violent self remains.)

But here, the new person, that is, the vegetative person,  the person who was already strangled, is involved in the story.

The audience is confused here. Kim Soo-hyun has two personalities and one of the two is dead .. So who is that?????

The obvious thing is that the vegetative person is just another person. Nobody knows the real name.
It was a person who had nothing to do with Jang Tae-young until the moment he was lying by chance in the ward.
At first glance, the age in hospital charts looks like 62. Anyway, it is perfect.
Who this man is, isn't important but he has strong commitment to life!! It is his will to live.

First of all, this vegetative man has a very strong obsession with life and is a colossal force. In addition, the vegetative person also has the psychiatrist who was in charge of Jang Tae-young (Kim Su-hyun).

Yes~

The main link of this film is the psychiatrist (Lee Sung-min aka Boris)!!!

Moreover, the shocking thing was the daughter of the criminal investigator, No Yeom (Lee Kyung-young) and the personality investigative journalist.
The psychiatrist is the killer 'Boris' who raped and killed Jang Tae Young's (Kim Su-hyun) girlfriend.
(Is that difficult ?? Heh)
In fact, the psychiatrist also has two personalities, that of a mobster and a doctor, through a drug called 'Siesta'.

(Someone who can express two personalities with just an expression, watch to believe, Lee Sung-min)
As a cinematic device, the drug has side effects of personification, to pull out the inner desires that a person wants the most.
Anyway, the vegetative man depends on psychiatrist Lee Sung-min for his will to live.
He survives on sustenance/dependance of drug Siesta and on the investigative journalist personality of Jang Tae-young.
He lives with the illusion that he is the real Jang Tae-young.

Because the vegetative  man believed himself to be the real Jang Tae-young, so that the audience suddenly mimics/imitates/follows Kim Su-hyun.
In the end, is it true that you are real? What's real? Where am I? I would have asked this.

Again, the vegetative man is simply the 'M'.
Coincidence? Or he wishes to live through Boris(Lee Sung-min). Someone revived with obsessive desire to become Jang Tae-young.

Anyway, the second half of the movie is the real story/action of the Real.
When the visuals are full of guns and action,  it depicts the incredible image and beauty of the movie.

The intense longing to become the real Jang Tae-young leads to extreme addiction to the drug 'siesta'.
The vegetative man 'M' strives to convincingly become the perfect Jang Tae-young, becoming the perfect action man.

The real action begins with the first punch of the third of Jang Tae-young, the violent character of the film.

Because the vegetative man lives in his hallucinations due to drugging, the actions take place in a psychedelic state.
It's a hero-like action sequence that reminds me of the Matrix.

"The action of vegetative character is just an illusion."
Such as the shot wound is recovered instantly and the complete hit through the wall with the fist, is hallucination of the vegetative man.
It is an expression of intense desire.
After the psychedelic-action, the director confirms that the body has the right injuries intact after the lethal action through the camera.

It expresses the blind desire of the vegetative man to be strong and his attachment to life, the vitality and strength of Jang Tae-young that he wanted through the haze of the drug.
The elegant and stylish action is all in the vegetative man's head while the real thing was actually a bloody brawl.
(Those who say that the last action scene is ridiculous, you really don't understand the film. Watch it again...)

The last scene is in Siesta(same as the drug name) which is ruined by the shootings between the gangsters and Jang Tae-young.

The beautiful, night skyline of the city full of buildings looks like a mirage(fake).
From the side of the ruins to the moment of  the death of Jang Tae-young, the wish of the (fake) vegetative man was to become Jang Tae-young.

The body that looks at him is real, but the personality comes to an end with the appearance of a 'fake' Jang Tae-young (violent personality).

"Eventually the film is real.
In fact, nothing is true.
One has to think that the message is that it is about becoming to yourself."

Of course, because it is a personal view, we can have another appreciation/opinion about this artwork.

It was merely a flimsy appreciation for this film, which was just better to be seen personally.

Brief Conclusion---

Kim Soo-hyun - Jang Tae-young

Investigative Journalist (Real Person) - Extinction

Gangster boss (fake personality) - Survival

Vegetative Man 'Jang Tae-young' - Death

Psychiatrist-Mafia Boris - Death

Sully - Pretty and good acting, do not die ㅜㅜ

Sung Dong-il -charming, cruel, charismatic - but death

Lee Kyung-young - cameo appearance, the core link of the movie, sadness - death

------

From the review of others, perhaps all the story is from the time when Jang Tae Young (Kim Soo-hyun) met the psychiatrist.
Another review said that it might be a story in the inner world.
Sully, Seongdongil, Yeonhyeol, etc., were interpreted as symbols in the process of survival between Kim Su-hyun's violent self and the original investigative journalist self.
I have seen the movie before, but after seeing the movie again, wonder if the story is about the inner world of Kim Su-hyun.
In the first conversation with psychiatrist (Lee Sung-min, Boris) in the real world, Jang Tae-young was looking for a man with a tattoo on his neck that had raped and killed his girlfriend in the past, and the story was actually unnecessary.
The interpretation is left to the audience.

Thank you, iluilu for providing the translation!  I give up on using Google Translate since usually none of it makes sense.

I heard the script for Real was around for years but no director or actor dared touch it.  On paper it sounds intriguing and marvelous but no one believed it can be properly conveyed in film.  I guess they are right to a certain degree.  It is a very complicated and convoluted story and requires a very skilled and experienced director to helm it.  I remember reading an interview with Ang Lee on his movie Lust, Caution, which is based off a short story by famous writer Eileen Chang.  Lee said that a simple scenario that Chang effortlessly depicts in words requires him the effort of overturning the earth and sky to film.

Though I have lost count of how many times I've seen Real, I have yet to put the pieces together to understand the complete story.  Those who have seen it or at least read reviews or synopsis of Soo Hyun's characters will understand why he was so adamant on taking this role. The characters of JTY are so complicated and multilayered that an acting fanatic like him would not want to pass up the opportunity to pour everything he's learned about acting into it.  If the box office is not factor in acting awards, I would not be surprised if he picks a best actor award or two with this role. It is honestly the best he's ever done to date.

"Interview," I thought the Kim Soo-hyun was not Kim Soo-hyun

This is a personal translation so all errors are mine. If there are any corrections, please tell me to correct it.

Recently,
A press-preview for Kim Soo-hyun's movie, 'Real' was conducted.
After following TV series;
<The moon embraces the sun> and <My Love from the Stars>, and movie <Secretly, greatly> that set high records, Kim Soo-hyun returns with to the big screen with an ambitious film after 4 years<Real>
Forget about the results of the box office.
Just the three words, 'Kim Soo-hyun' are enough to attract attention.
Before this film
Kim Soo-hyun spent two years as an actor in a blank period.
Although he's been on all kinds of commercials,
he has also successfully challenged professional bowling players.
However, old line of work, after all, is the old line of work.
His return always brings considerable golden aura.
As it should be.

JfzIKQG.jpg

Q.Although I made an answer at the preview, I always want to ask again, what is the reason for choosing this movie?
A.Because I want to personally inhabit all the qualities of different roles I chose this work, if <My Love from the Star> is the challenge of aliens, and professors and other factors set 400 years ago, then this kind of challenge is somewhat different , I did not make certain what type to choose, I belong to, all kind of roles in all categories.

Q.Because the ambitious role chosen, what is the process of inhabiting and shaping it?
A.One sentence, it is very hard physically. In other works there is only one role which is distressing enough, in this film I played all the different roles, although in a work one can play multiple roles ambitiously. But the distress of each character's charm and color is time consuming and lot of effort is to be put several times. The process of shaping the role of in a process is energy draining.

The first part of shaping the role of Jang Tae-young, has been keeping the line of sight to the command of the characters, to his blessing, I can speak to the seniors, under the command (laugh), he is derived from the body of different characters, because the energy is overflowing, to always chew gum is energy consuming.

After the shaping of Zhang Taiying is the body of the investigative journalist, in the set he is a workaholic, although usually a pessimistic person, but his eyes shine at the prospect of work.

The one with the bandages is the imitation, narcissistic orientation of this body has been set as the perfect figure curve. The copycat's goal is to give the speaker an uncomfortable feeling, that's why his words are slow, and it looks uncomfortable. In order to shield the bruised face, he'll wear a mask, but he is the kind that can be decorated with gorgeous gems so I thought about the sounds and movements that fit him.

Q.It was a long shoot. And a lot of filming, is very hard. Personally what took most efforts to prepare, the most memorable action or scene?
A.Action scenes took a lot of energy, they are also most memorable, the most personal opinion is the bathroom scene. The scene of two Zhang Taiying where Zhang Taiying believes that he is the true Zhang Taiying's, his faith in those broken, vulnerable, moments, I used the most energy in this scene. No matter which Zhang Taiying, both faces are Kim Soo-hyun, even though they all look the same. But you have to show two different characters by expression and action. It gets complicated and complicated because of the bathroom scene. I will be in front of the mirror, the two of Jang  Tae-young are shown in the mirror. How to behave when a lot of faith breaks, I tried all kinds of expressions and empty smiles.

If we're going to choose another scene, in the second half, when he drove to the casino after Song Yu-hwa's death, the scene is very memorable as well. This is a scene that combines the feelings of the film with perfect performance.

Q.The total length of the film 135 minutes, after editing, the shooting time should have been very long.
A.It took 6 months to shoot, but somedays it seems, I have spent a year and a half feeling it(laughs) of course. From the time of exposure to the script began, I started to learn for about an year, started practicing boxing 3 months before filming began for action scenes. The talk for the film was completed  but still spent more than a month on it.

Q.In the long shoot, any memorable episode?
A.Set of suits, eight-way trips and travelling a lot in order to scout a filming location to shoot, depending on the different themes of the place. Busan's mountains, Daejeon's underwater sequence, Yeongjongdo Island casino ... in such a way because there are different themes. Joining the crew, cheering together, happy and impressed with the shooting.

Q.How many personalities have you played? Provide a few tips for the clueless audience.
A.I also gave a hint when I was on stage. Although the name of the movie is real, but it's about a bunch of fake stories. Out of  them, two people are right, but there are total four personalities. Originally there were investigative journalist Jang Tae-young and the vegetative man, but other personalities derive from them. Suited Jang Tae-young  from investor Jang Tae-young, watching the movie you will find the middle of it confusing.

Q.What does the second half of the film mean?
A.The illusion/hallucination is felt in the state of things in the performance of investor Zhang Taiying. During the gun fight is part of the regeneration and perception of struggle/conflict, wearing a red dress and thoughts sliding to the same loop. People like flying across the water are not part of an illusion, so after these scenes, you can see the scars on the arm of investors Zhang Taiying with gunshot wounds.

Q.For a movie that's hard to understand and its criticism, what do you think?
A.I've been confirming my understanding with the Director since the first time I got the script, saying this is the scene, right? No, the result is wrong. And then this is it, right? Then wrong again, always in the wrong. I was wrong too many times, so the audience will of course think so. Without information, when first viewed, issue is 'What does this mean?' The reaction is natural. I think it's a process. For me, these are fresh and very interesting. Nothing to do with the result. I love this work very much. It's my preference.

Q.Are you satisfied with the finished product? What's the difference after reading the script and seeing the finished product?
A.I seem to belong less likely to compare this type of thing. Because at the script reading, I used my imagination to portray my acting. During uncertainity, I watch the playback of the scene in the stands. What is the difference between the finished product, I can't feel detachment from the script and the finished product. Although there are differences in satisfaction, after watching there was a little reduction in the act and colour I showed.

Q. I want to hear the contents of the deleted section. After watching the film, I felt that weight of the components between Lee Kyung-young and Jang Tae-young were lacking.
A.Before the show, for the past scenes, it should be helpful for them to be in the form of comics(laughs). The story of journalist Zhang Taiying has been cut off a lot. Because he's a workaholic, during a part of his job, he loses his fiancee during a dangerous drug coverage and gets implicated in it as well. I was drugged and my fiancee was drugged. Cutting this part in the length of the movie added a charm in the process, causing the film to become a form of puzzle.

Q.What about the cooperation with Sulli?
A.She has an overflowing energy, so she has the power to make the scene clearer. It was a surprise to see a lot of her enthusiasm during the first half. She was stimulated. Personally, I think Sulli has very attractive audio-visual in the movies. Of course, the face is pretty.

Q.The two actors are shooting the love scene section. How about the process of filming it?
A.High octane ... The process of filming is the same state of mind. I thought 'I should suck in my belly'. Sulli was also sucking in her belly as well. It's going to be hard to breathe. Sulli was also hard of breath(laughs). We had similiar sense of sympathy.

Q.How did you prepare for the film? Is there a reference work?
A.In the first month of the shoot, it was tense (laughs). That part did not refer to anything else. We just followed the script.

Q.What do you think the public should pay more attention to in the film?
A.Because it's tough, so there's no way to say. I don't think it's a good idea to put focus on the other things without paying attention to the acting. But there is no one point to be found in the <Real> as there are many. You will not remember the much of the weight after the end of the movie, but will you remember certain points?

Q.There are many comments on the director's change. During the press-preview, it was with director Lee Sarang.
A.During the initial film planning, the two directors were always working together, modifying the script together, also during the stage of completion, both from the beginning to the end, two have been in it. In order to follow the direction ofthe film, crew and actors chose one. There is no difference with the decision.

Q.Will there be any changes in the acting after the movie <Real>?
A.There is ambition after filming, the charm of the mask's acting was fulfilled through the film. With a mask, there can be more bold expression, hiding behind a mask can also give explosive energy. I took a lot of power from the mask.

Q.It was reported that a lot of Chinese fans gathered at the screening.
A.I am also very surprised by the extent. I'm thankful that the fans can continue to give me care and love. It was unthinkable before 10 years ago.

Q.Standing on the fan's side, Kim Soo-hyun of the movie could be intimidating. Fans do not seem to want you exposed.
A.The expose section can feel very burdening for the fans, but as an actor, I want to guard the psychology of being diverse in performance. The company discussed the work at the time when I was already deep into the filming. I think it's the company that respects my opinion and is also actively thinking about my acting direction. It's a feeling that has built-up over many years.

Q.There was a long lapse between works, Young fans are unable to access Kim Soo-hyun's work because they cannot watch them.
A.After a lapse of a long time, I am greeting young fans through the Infinite Challenge, or the Li Hongki's kiss the Radio. But because teenagers can't see Real, so they will be left the image of a fool. (laughs)

Q.There was a media preview, you just said about the scary script, you are not afraid to live your own life.
A.It's a recent experience. There was a sense of distance between actor Kim Soo-hyun and the inner face as a person, Kim Soo-hyun. I feel people around me began to take care of me which I began to take for granted or wasn't concious of. When I woke up to this, I realized everything was scary and terrible. Because it felt a sense of departure from the spirit of hard work, I was in a lot of distress. It was the worst of times. I couldn't talk to people normally, I was scared to show myself in front of the camera. It's getting a lot better now. This is because many people have problems, it has become a great consolation.

Q.How have you been?
A.Recently, I have started to feel the actor self and my inner self more closer. The attitude towards people, I think I can talk more sincerely. I think 'Ah, now I am truly in my thirties'! I have been 6 months into my thirties. My mind is very positive, so though we'll enlist later, I think the activities of my 30's, there should not be a problem to show more of acting than just my 30s. If the time is right, I want to shoot a piece of work before I enlist. But it may not come true. Coming back will be a complete building up. If <Real> shows the manly side to the male audience, then I want to show the manly side to a female audience. I can show higher acting that reaches more than eyes, facial expressions, movements that is the standard.

Yuzu, thank you for putting this so well. There are certain things ahead of their time and the film is an example of that. Coupled with unfortunate editing and a vicious media, the desire to pull a better man down, people have lost their objectivity. Whatever is the result, he seems to love it and said it was the best he had ever acted.

I wish I can watch it already. It is the kind of a movie that with a little polish can easily make rounds around international film festivals. Hopefully, even if it suffered due to the lacking reception, it is acknowledged in terms of complexity and acting prowess of the lead.

For a megastar with massive popularity and immense expectations, he took the less travelled road, he is definitely paving a new way for Korean movies in terms of the art that is acting.

Actor Kim Soo Hyun reportedly made a position on the news for Military Service in September.

A member of Keyeast's agency, said in a phone conversation with Sports Korea, "Kim Soo Hyun has not yet received a letter of admission ".

Kim Soo Hyun announced his intention to join the military in the spring of next year, revealing his desire to add more works in the movie 'Real' publicity round interview.

The media explained that Kim Soo Hyun was about to enter the Military in September and told the advertisers which he is working as a model that the schedule should be rearranged until August.

Kim Soo Hyun has been given active duty in the physical examination of the Military Manpower Administration in 2012. Although he had been diagnosed with heart disease due to childhood and was working for the public service, he was reconsidered and enlisted for active duty.

On the other hand, Kim Soo Hyun took the role of one person and two in the movie "Real" released on the 28th last month.

Hi hwonhwon, thanks for sharing this. So, if this is the case, he can no longer do another drama. The movie “Real” will be his last work in the meantime. So, the report that he’s going to enlist during fall is true as an active-duty. I heard that when KEYEAST is contacted for him to appear in a drama they were told it would be impossible. Many had guessed he may enlist next year, but for me as an 88'er, it's very possible he would enlist this year as most other celebrities born in 1988 have enlisted already. Ohhh.........I feel sad & bad. I am just feeling bad that his movie “Real”, his last project prior MS was not as successful that he was expecting.

Hi yuzu, thanks for sharing your thoughts about "Real" -  Well, he'll make it all back easily with a drama after discharge..... Many considered “Real” a bad movie and out of place but his acting is impeccable. I haven't watched it yet but based from the teaser/trailer his acting is so good. What else is new from KSH, huh? He has been a great actor.

Kim Soo Hyun "Enlist in September? Actually NO ... I can not get a warrant"

A Keyeast official told OSEN on July 11, "Kim Soo Hyun have not received a warrant yet.

Kim Soo Hyun is reported to have told the advertiser who works as a model that the schedule should be rearranged until August. So now the story of Kim Soo Hyun joining the army in September is spreading.

The enlistment warrant has not yet come out. So it is unclear when Kim Soo Hyun will join. Kim Soo Hyun attended the premiere of the film distribution of "Real" in June and said, "The military has not yet reached a specific timing." If it is the right timing, I would really like to have one more work without drama or movie. I do not think there will be any, but I think that the timing should be a little better. "

Kim Soo Hyun received active duty in the physical examination of the Military Manpower Administration in 2012. Kim Soo Hyun who was diagnosed with heart disease, suffered from a childhood but received regular medical care.

Kim Soo-hyun denies September enlistment

Actor Kim Soo-hyun on Tuesday denied media reports that he would be enlisting for mandatory military service in September. “He has not even received his draft notice yet so we don’t know the date of enlistment,” Kim’s agency Keyeast said. “We will officially announce (the enlistment date) when the date is confirmed.” Kim earlier said in a press interview to promote his latest film “Real” that he hopes to play one more role before he joins military service.

A local media outlet reported Monday that Kim would enlist in September, citing advertising officials, “Kim requested to the advertiser for which he has been modeling that he needs to wrap up all his public schedules by August.” The report also quoted production companies which tried to cast Kim in their new dramas, “Keyeast refused (casting offers).” He was originally set to serve as a public service worker instead of an active-duty soldier due to a heart disease he suffered in his childhood, but he underwent reexamination in 2012 and qualified for active duty.
