EPITAPH. ("Gidam") In the early part of the 1940s, a young psychiatrist and his wife accept a position at a mental hospital after completing their studies in Tokyo. However, Dr. Kim Dong-won and In-yeong are soon plunged into a world of confusion and fear when they discover something evil is lurking the hospital floors. Dr. Kim is played by Kim Tae-soo (Phone, The Contact) and his wife is Kim Bo-kyeong (Friend, Before the Summer Passes Away). Also listed in the cast are Jin Goo (Dirty Carnival, Bittersweet Life) and Lee Dong-gyu (Wild Card, Some). This horror film, co-directed by debuting Jeong Shik and Jeong Beom-shik seems to be well-cast and that alone is enough to raise hopes about their contribution to this summer's horror movies. It is produced by Dorothy Films and will be released by Studio 2.0 on August 1.

“혹시 1년 사이에 결혼하셨어요? 행복해 보이세요. 누구에게 사랑 받고 있는 것처럼….”

배우 진구(26)가 처음 만나자마자 건넨 인사말이다. 말실수할까 봐 긴장돼 흡연을 하고 싶다는 그는 담배 한 가치를 입에 물고 재떨이를 찾았다. 지난해 ‘비열한 거리’ 때와는 다르게 수염을 길러 섹시한 남성미가 물씬 풍겼다.

약 1년 반 만에 ‘사랑따윈 필요없어’(2006), ‘아이스케키’(2006), ‘비열한 거리’(2006), ‘기담’(2007), ‘트럭’ 등 5개 영화에 출연하는 행운을 얻은 진구. 매번 신인답지 않은 연기력을 선보인 진구는 함께 작업했던 감독이나 PD들이 또 다른 작품에 추천을 해 캐스팅된 경우가 대부분이다. ‘트럭’ 역시 ‘비열한 거리’ 유하 감독의 추천으로 출연하게 됐다. ‘트럭’은 유해진과 호흡을 맞추는 버디 스릴러다. 진구는 비밀의 열쇠를 쥐고 있는 인물을 맡아 현재 촬영에 한창이다.

자신의 배역인 박정남이 부담스럽지 않아 오히려 좋았다는 진구는 공포영화 ‘기담’(감독 정가형제/8월 1일 개봉)에서 세 번째로 비중 있는 남자 역할이라며 소속사에서 준 시나리오를 받아 들었다.

#미모 여고생 시체 역 ‘여지’와의 베드신, 삭제 아쉬워.

“소속사에서도 그냥 한 번 보라고 했어요. 가장 비중 있는 역할이 아니니까 부담이 없었어요. 대선배님들에 묻어 연기하는 게 좋았죠. ‘사랑따윈 필요없어’(2006)에선 비중이 컸는데 영화가 흥행에 실패해 아쉬워요. 한편의 소설 같은 드라마를 영화로 압축하다 보니… 무리한 도전이었어요. 3가지 에피소드 중 한 편의 주인공인 박정남은 결코 쉬운 역할이 아니었어요. 소심하고 속내를 드러내지 않는 병원 실습 의대생 역할이죠. 시체를 무서워하면서도 어여쁜 여고생 시체와 사랑에 빠지는 캐릭터예요. 시체에게 자기 얘기도 해요. 36시간 동안이나 ‘미모의 여고생 시체’ 역을 맡은 여지(‘제2의 한가인’이라 불리는 여배우) 씨와 베드신, 키스신을 찍었는데 많이 삭제돼 아까워 죽겠어요. 고생 많이 했는데. 현장에서 촬영 전 세팅 되는데 시간이 많이 걸려 옷을 벗고 계속 기다렸어요. 근데 키스신은 한 5초 나오나? 베드신도 찍은 거에 비하면….”(쓴웃음)

#‘리틀 이병헌’ 탈피하려 노력하지 않았다.

“드라마 ‘올인’에서 이병헌 선배님 어린 시절로 나와 생긴 ‘리틀 이병헌’이란 별명 나쁘지 않아요, 탈피하려 노력하지도 않았어요. 다들 탈피했다고 하는데 탈피한 것도 모르겠어요. MBC 시트콤 ‘논스톱’에서 제가 맡은 역할이 ‘찌질이’스러워 너무 싫은데, 찌질이로 기억 안하고 계시는 것만도 좋을 뿐이에요. ‘찌질이’보다는 차라리 ‘리틀 이병헌’이 낫죠. 결정적으로 ‘비열한 거리’를 통해 변신했다고 하시는 분들이 많았어요. 그리고 이번 ‘기담’에서는 연약하고 유약한 박정남 역에 제가 캐스팅된 게 신기해요. 정가형제 감독님들이 ‘비열한 거리’를 보시고 유약한 모습이 내제돼 있는 걸 보셨대요.”

#어떤 곳에서나 노력하는 배우, 산 타는 진구.

“‘기담’의 박정남처럼 혼잣말을 원래 잘해요. 산에 올라가는 게 취미인데 올라가면서도 대사를 크게 외우면서, 소리치면서 올라가요. TV 토크쇼에 너무 나가고 싶었어요. 너무 나가고 싶어 집에서 욕조에 몸 담그고 샤워하면서도 나 혼자 사회도 보고 게스트도 돼서 놀아요.(웃음) 산을 너무 좋아해 지난 번 ‘무릎팍 도사’에 나온 산악인 엄홍길 씨를 보고 울었어요. 사실 제가 산 타기 전엔 산악인들을 우습게 생각했거든요. 그들의 도전 정신과 열정을 배워 연기 제일 잘하는 사람과 붙고 싶어요.”

'D-War' Setting Daily Box Office Records

Many movie theaters around the nation are setting new daily box office records thanks to the domestic sci-fi blockbuster "D-War."

The Megabox chain, which operates ten multiplexes nationwide, set a new record at its Seoul COEX theater on Saturday, drawing 32-thousand-500 moviegoers in a single day.

A Megabox official says that thanks to "D-War," most Korean theaters set new daily records that day. He says that other releases such as the Korean historical drama "May 18" and the horror flick "Epitaph," Hollywood animated film "Ratatouille" and blockbuster "Die Hard Four-point-Oh" are all doing well.

The country's largest multiplex chain CGV also saw 29 out of its 47 theaters record new daily records for ticket sales on Saturday.

Horror Flick 'Gidam' Invited to San Sebastian Film Festival

The Korean horror flick 'Gidam' has been invited to the 55th San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain.

The film production company Dorothy said that, despite the approaching film submission deadline, the organizers invited 'Gidam' to be screened in the 'Zabaltegi' category of this year's festival, citing the depth and wit of the film as the reasons for their decision.

The 'Zabaltegi' category invites films that have received sound reviews in major international film festivals or films by up-and-coming directors worth noticing. In 2005, film director Kang Yi-kwan's 'Apple' was invited to the film festival, and he received the award for best new screenwriter. Director Kim Ki-duk's 'The Bow' also received good reviews.

Korean films have done particularly well at the San Sebastian film festival. In 2002, 'The Way Home' was invited to the new director category and received a special jury prize and in 2003, 'Memories of Murder' received awards for best director and best new director. Dorothy Production, therefore, has high hopes for 'Gidam' at this year's festival.

'Gidam' is a horror movie about a mysterious incident that took place at the Gyeongseong Ahnsaeng Hospital in 1942. The film has attracted a large number of moviegoers with its fresh story line, scenes that appeal to the aesthetic sense and the underlying sadness behind the prevailing horror.

영화 ‘기담’으로 성공적인 주연 데뷔식을 마친 영화배우 진구가 최근 한채영을 영입했던 별난액터스와 전속계약을 맺었다.

별난액터스 측은 보도자료를 통해 “충무로의 기대주 진구와 전속계약을 했다”며 “진구에 대한 영화, 방송 관계자들의 기대가 큰 만큼 추후 주목할 만한 활동을 해 나갈 것"이라고 밝혔다.

진구는 지난 7월 개봉작인 영화 '기담'에서 주인공 중 한 명으로 출연, 영화에 대한 호평과 함께 주연 데뷔의 기쁨을 맛본 바 있다.

‘기담’에서 가녀린 성품을 지닌 의과대학생 역할을 맡아 연기를 펼친 진구는 출연작이 제55회 산세바스티안 국제영화제의 자발테기(Zabaltegi) 섹션에 공식 초청되기도 했다.

Three Korean films invited to San Sebastian fest

The San Sebastian International Film Festival, one of Europe's top festivals and the leading film event of the Spanish-speaking world, has invited three Korean films to screen at its 55th edition.

Shadows in the Palace, a mystery-thriller set during the Joseon Dynasty, has been selected for the festival's main competition section. Directed by KIM Mee-jeung and starring PARK Jin-hee and YOON Se-ah, the film centers around the power struggles and deceptions that take place at a Korean royal court. The film has received notice in Korea for having almost an all-female cast and production team, including the director, producer, and executive producer.

The film will be eligible to receive the prestigious Golden Shell, the festival's top prize, and as a debut film will also qualify for the 90,000 euro Altadis-New Directors Award.

Meanwhile, debut film Epitaph by the Jung Brothers (JUNG Bum-sik and JUNG Sik) will screen in the Zabaltegi - New Directors section for first and second films. This horror-mystery film is set in 1942, during the Japanese colonial era, and centers around three separate stories in a hospital. The Jung Brothers will also be eligible to receive the Altadis award.

Finally, gangster drama The Show Must Go On by HAN Jae-rim will screen in the Zabaltegi - Pearls section, reserved for films which have already screened at other international film festivals. The film centers around a gangster played by leading actor SONG Kang-ho.

The directors of those three films will attend the festival, while KOFIC will hold a small dinner meeting between Korean directors and Spanish film professionals.

Held in the Basque region of Spain, the San Sebastian International Film Festival will be held from September 20-29.

Hallyu Spreading to Americas, Europe

The Korean pop culture wave 'Hallyu' is spreading across the world, to the US, Europe and Latin America.

The 2nd International Creative Cultural Industry Exhibition has opened at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Seoul, and 54 broadcast firms from 17 countries including Fox TV and TV Azteca have come to buy Hallyu content.

The number two broadcaster in the US, Fox TV, held talks with IMTV and five other Korean firms on Tuesday.

The Korean Wave is expected to hit Mexico as well.

TV Azteca, the second largest private broadcast in Mexico, has also come to the expo to purchase the Korean dramas 'Jumong' and 'All In.' An Azteca official says that Korean dramas well suits the Mexican sentiment.

An editor from Shanghai's biggest broadcaster SMG Group expressed interest in Korean documentaries about its culture and people's lives saying that "Hallyu is still going strong in China and will continue on for a considerable time."

Korean industry pushes horror revival

Asian Film Market sees genre's creative renewal

Korean tradition has it that a good fright is the best way to fend off the summer heat.

So it's the rare Korean producer who doesn't try to time the release of a horror film for between June and August.

As a result, the Asian Film Market often is the place where all these horror films are made available to buyers for the first time.

Although internationally Asian horror may be considered old news,

in Korea this year there is a sense that the genre experienced a bit of a creative renewal.

From traditional horror pics in new settings such as "Muoi" (shot in Vietnam) or "Cadaver" (set in a medical school), to novel adaptation "Black House," to the atmospheric 1940s-set "Epitaph" to genre films that borrow horror elements such as medical thriller "Wide Awake" and period mystery "Shadows in the Palace," viewers experienced a wide diversity of styles and subject matter this year.

Korean sales companies will be hoping that a little of this creative juice can be turned into export dollars.

"Particularly for Latin American and European markets, horror is still one of the more vibrant genres for us," said Tom Oh of CJ Entertainment. "We have seen some declining interest in the genre in Asia, but on the whole horror works well on DVD and is one of our strongest sellers."

Locally, horror titles did not escape the overall decline in admissions that has the Korean film industry wringing its hands this year.

Best-grossing film among this year's releases was CJ Entertainment's Korean-Japanese co-production "Black House," which opened at No. 1 in late June and ultimately earned close to $10 million.

Based on a Japanese novel, the film featured high production values and a well-known star in Hwang Jeong-min.

Two debut films, Studio 2.0's "Epitaph" and CJ Entertainment's "Wide Awake," had the bad luck to be sharing screens with megahits "D-War" and "May 18" in early August, and topped out in the $4 million range.

Both films earned strong buzz from viewers and critics, however. The former, set in a Seoul hospital during World War II, was the beneficiary of an online petition by cult fans to keep the film in theaters. "I feel 'Epitaph' was the best Korean horror film of this year," said film critic Jeon Chan-il. "It was shot with a confidence that is really unusual for debut directors."

Meanwhile, another debut film, mystery "Shadows in the Palace," is drawing good buzz ahead of its Oct. 18 release.

Pic, a murder yarn set in the women's quarters of a Joseon Dynasty palace, premiered in competition at the San Sebastian Intl. Film Festival, and is one of the films most heavily promoted by CJ Entertainment at this year's Asian Film Market.

배우 진구가 일본드라마에 출연해 이병헌의 한류 물결을 따라잡는다.

일본 TBS드라마 ‘죠시데카’에서 특별 출연과 ‘번외편’ 주역이라는 이채로운 중책을 맡아 일본활동의 포문을 연다.

18일부터 방송을 타는 ‘죠시데카’는 ‘일본 시청률의 여왕’으로 불리는 인기여배우 나카마 유키에가 주연을 맡은 드라마이자 한류스타 류시원의 일본미니시리즈 데뷔작으로도 주목을 받은 작품.

‘웹(Web)’과 ‘에피소드(Episode)’의 합성어인 웨비소드는 미국드라마에서 3년전부터 도입돼온 ‘보너스’격의 온라인드라마로 ‘로스트’나 ‘프리즌 브레이크’도 시도한 형식이다. 진구는 이번 ‘죠시데카’의 웨비소드를 통해 인터넷을 이용하는 젊은 일본네티즌들에게 적극적으로 다가가는 기회를 가질 전망이다.

진구의 일본 진출은 한류드라마의 히트 목록에 들어있는 ‘올인’에서 한류스타 이병헌의 아역으로 나와 일본 연예관계자들의 관심을 끈 게 계기가 됐다. 진구는 영화 ‘트럭’을 촬영하는 틈틈이 3차례 일본에 방문해 ‘죠시데카’의 출연분량을 소화했다.

S. Korean actor to star in Japanese drama

SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Jin Goo has joined the cast of the new Japanese drama "Joshi Deka!" (Female Detective!), his agency said Tuesday.

Byeollan Actors said, "Not only will Jin Goo play a special role starting from the 10th episode of 'Joshi Deka!,' which begins broadcasting Thursday and stars famous Japanese actress Yukie Nakama, but he will also play an important role in the websodes."

Combining the words "web" and "episode," a websode is an extra episode online that spins off regular shows, such as the U.S. shows "Lost" and "Prison Break." "Joshi Deka!," to be aired by Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc., will feature 10-minute websodes that will review the main story and give a sneak peak of upcoming episodes.

Studio 2.0 notches up Asian sales

Korean co. is the 'Star' at Film Market

SEOUL -- Korea's Studio 2.0 clinched a handful of mostly Asian sales at the recent American Film Market.

Horror pic "Epitaph" by the Jung Brothers was picked up by Encore for Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, while Scholar Multimedia took Taiwan and B.I.R. Film bought rights for Turkey.

Romantic comedy "Lovers of 6 Years," starring Kim Ha-neul, was pre-sold to Rose Media for Thailand. Pic is scheduled for a January release.

Lastly, musical comedy "Highway Star" was picked up by Diamond Cinema for Vietnam. Previous sales on this title were made to Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Brunei.
