Unless I'm seeing things (which could happen ) I just realized... that Jin Goo was in the movie "Love Me Not", staring Moon Geun Young & Kim Joo Hyuk. It's him, right... in one of the supporting roles. I've not seen the full movie though, just the trailer but it definitely looked like him... here... :blush:

Can anyone clarify this, thanks!

Good to see Jin Goo being nominated in the Best New Actor category (hope someone can clarify this) for the upcoming 43rd Baeksang. I sure hope he wins this time.

It's too bad that JG didn't win the Best New Actor award at the recent Baeksang but I know he'll do great in the movies especially in the upcoming new horror-thriller. Article on the movie, sadly I can't translate anything but will sure to post any updates in English... if any... hopefully.

드라마 ‘올인’의 ‘이병헌’ 아역으로 그 존재를 알린 진구가 처음으로 영화 주연에 데뷔한다.

세상에서 가장 섬뜩한 러브스토리를 다룬 영화 <기담>(감독-정가형제, 제공/배급-스튜디오2.0, 제작-영화사 도로시)에서 진정한 주연으로 거듭난 ‘진구’의 변신이 주목을 끌고 있는것.

2007년, 영화 잡지에서 선정한 ‘주연으로 성장할 배우 top10’에 ‘하정우’, ‘정유미’, ‘김윤석’ 등과 함께 당당히 그 이름을 올리기도 했다.

Why Do Koreans Watch Horror Flicks in Summer?

Summer is the season when moviegoers in Korea see spine-chilling horror films at cinemas to escape the sweltering heat.

Our Son Heekyung has the latest on this genre and its popularity during the season.

Domestic directors hope to scare the sluggish movie industry back on track by releasing eight horror films this summer.

The release of the film ''The Evil Twin'' late last month kicked off the horror movie season in Korea.

So why is summer considered the best season to release scary cinema in the country?

''The trend of watching horror films at the hottest time of the year in Korea began around five years ago. That's when Korean directors started producing more horror movies in time for a summer release to satisfy moviegoers. An obvious reason for watching such flicks in the summer is to cool off from the heat.''

One of the most awaited horror films this year is ''Black House.''

The story is about a string of mysterious deaths, which itself will be relatively new to Korean audiences.

''The hardest of all was expressing fear and dread. Until now, a mix of horror and mystery were rarely seen in Korean movies.''

Directors are looking for new trendsetters in this genre to shift from the stereotypes that horror films are psychological, use themes to scare people and show disturbing images.

''Korean horror films in the past focused on portraying people's regrets and emotions in life. But not anymore. The lineup for this summer is different. Among the stand outs this year are mystery thrillers and horrors set at hospitals.''

Movie critics say films combining mystery and horror are the new trend this summer.

They say horror flicks in the past had a limited following, but that it's now gaining a wider fan base.

''Filmmakers are coming up with innovative elements to break away from conventional and traditional horror films. The film 'Black House' is a case in point. It's based on a Japanese novel of the same title and revolves around a psychopath.''

Another development is the rise of medical thrillers.

''Return'' is about a 10-year-old boy who kills a child after being awakened by a doctor during surgery.

The mystery is why his life changed for the worst after the operation.

There's also the horror film ''Muoi,'' set in Vietnam.

The secret is behind the portrait.

Korean Films Enter Fukuoka Asian Film Festival

The 21st Fukuoka Asian Film Festival opens June 29th and will run through July 8th in Fukuoka, Japan. This film festival started in 1987 to discover and nurture new filmmakers from all over Asia. This year, 14 films from nine nations will be introduced at the festival.

Korea will present four films: "Radio Star" starring the venerable Ahn Seong-gi and Park Joong-hoon and directed by Lee Joon-ik, the maker of one of Korea's highest grossing films "King and the Clown"; "Cheaters" by director Park Sung-bum; the heart-warming "Ice Bar," starring young actor Park Ji-bin; and the comical "Mission Sex Control" featuring the cute couple Lee Beom-soo and Kim Jeong-eun.

An interview on Korea's enigmatic director Kim Ki-duk conducted by French film critic Antoine Coppola will be presented at the festival. The directors of the Korean films also plan to attend Q&A session following the showings of their films to answer questions from the audience.

FINALLY! The title of Jin Goo's upcoming new horror is Gidam or Epitaph... finally... been wondering about it for so long and no idea to even guess it before. *blurr* Thanks to the good people at Twitch and koreanfilm.org... we finally have a name for the title. Phew.

EPITAPH ("Gidam") In the early part of the 1940s, a young psychiatrist and his wife accept a position at a mental hospital after completing their studies in Tokyo. However, Dr. Kim Dong-won and In-yeong are soon plunged into a world of confusion and fear when they discover something evil is lurking the hospital floors. Dr. Kim is played by Kim Tae-soo (Phone, The Contact) and his wife is Kim Bo-kyeong (Friend, Before the Summer Passes Away). Also listed in the cast are Jin Goo (Dirty Carnival, Bittersweet Life) and Lee Dong-gyu (Wild Card, Some). This horror film, co-directed by debuting Jeong Shik and Jeong Beom-shik seems to be well-cast and that alone is enough to raise hopes about their contribution to this summer's horror movies. It is produced by Yeonghwasa Doroshi and will be released in July 2007.

Most people seem to be in agreement that the past year has been an off one for the Korean film industry with proven directors turning in some significant box office disappointments and many companies seemingly content to simply ride the formulae of past successes. Next year looks to be shaping up better with significant projects from a number of major players but for the industry to turn we're going to need a shot of new blood as well.

One possibility is looking to be Epitaph, the new horror picture from the studio behind animated hit Aachi and Ssipak. The story itself - it's a multi-parted revolving around supernatural events in a hospital - doesn't appear to be anything groundbreaking but the first trailer has just hit and this thing is looking mighty nice. Which shouldn't be a surprise, really, considering the director cut his teeth working with Chan Wook Park ...

"Winter Sonata," The Most Popular Korean Drama In Japan

"Winter Sonata," The Most Popular Korean Drama In Japan. Results from Asahi TV programs research shows "Dae Jang Geum," and "Stairway to Heaven" follows behind.

Among many Korean dramas that have perpetrated Japan, "Winter Sonata" revealed to have the most popularity.

According to the Japanese Asahi TV informative variety show, "SMAP Station," their latest research shows that "Winter Sonata," starring Korean stars Bae Yong Joon and Choi Ji Woo, was first place in the category of Best Korean Dramas. This research was started in May.

"Dae Jang Geum," starring Lee Young Ae and Ji Jin Hee received second place, "Stairway to Heaven" starring Kwon Sang Woo and Choi Ji Woo received third place, and "Beautiful Days" and "Hotelier" were included in the top five.

The rest were "Sad Sonata," "All In," "Summer Scent," "Autumn Fairytale," and "Lovers in Paris" in the top ten.

"Ice Bar" Wins Top Prize at Fukuoka Asian Film Festival

The family film "Ice Bar" won the best picture award at the 21st Fukuoka Asian Film Festival that was held in Fukuoka, Japan from Jun 29 through July 8.

The film's production company MK Pictures said that its director, Yeo In-kwang, personally attended the award ceremony last Sunday to receive the top honor.

"Ice Bar" was chosen for the top prize because of its beautiful portrayal of a local city in the 1960s and 70s, and for the natural and realistic acting of its leading actress and child actor who played the roles of mother and son.

"Ice Bar" is the fifth Korean film to win the best picture award at this film festival. The other four award-winning films were "An Affair" in 1999, "Nowhere to Hide" in 2000, "Bad Guy" in 2002, and "YMCA Baseball Team" in 2003.

Films Beautify the Grotesque

"Beautiful" may be the last word that comes to mind when one thinks of scary movies. But appalling zombies and grotesque images are very much last season, as the horror genre has had a big makeover.

The shocking juxtaposition of beauty with creepiness, rather than pure gore, is luring viewers.

In "The Cut," currently in theaters and drawing large audiences despite the tough competition with films such as "Harry Potter 5," a group of medical students begin their anatomy class, and a series of mysterious murders ensues.

The idea of dissecting cadavers evokes gore, but the students are presented with a cadaver of a young woman who was once gorgeous. Choi Hye-jung, a former model, plays the role of the mysterious lady. Korea's first cadaver dummy wears a rose tattoo on her breast, retaining a perfect figure beyond death.

The film's core chills are derived from haunting images of bloody red rose petals falling from the sky and the juxtaposition of youthful beauty with the dark shadows of death.

Likewise, soon to be released "Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait" and "Epitaph" have attracted much attention for their unnerving yet lovely posters.

"Muoi" tells the tale of a young novelist who comes across a mystic century-old portrait while searching for inspiration. Set in a luscious Vietnamese background, actresses Jo An and Cha Ye-ryun are ravishing in luxurious silk "Ao Dai" or traditional Vietnamese dresses, while the looming shadows of death linger in the air.

As for "Epitaph," necrophilia and mournful souls will creep out viewers. A young medical intern's arranged marriage is called off when his wife to-be commits suicide. Meanwhile, he falls in love with the corpse of an attractive woman, who turns out to be his dead fiancee. Twenty years later, the man, now an elite doctor, is haunted by a bizarre series of events.

"Epitaph" is noted for its classic portrayal of Kyongseong (now Seoul) life in the 1940s, when Japanese cultural influences remained strong. The chilling story set against an attractive setting, rather than a sinister haunted house, creates a uniquely eerie ambiance.

Following the release of the film's trailer on the Internet, Netizens were excited by the striking resemblance between the dead young woman and actress Han Ga-in, who is known here as the Korean Olivia Hussey ("Romeo and Juliet," 1968).

"Splatter movies (gory, blood-tainted stories) are prevalent in the United States, but do not fare too well in Korea," said Yoo Hyeong-jin, a researcher at the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). "Koreans seem to prefer a more sophisticated style of terror."

Yoo further explained that the noticeable rise of "beautiful" domestic horror movies is a result of producers adopting benchmarking, a process of searching out and studying the best practices that produce superior performances.

"Certain cinematic trends tend to dominate the film scene each season," he said.

So be prepared to taste horror with a touch of loveliness this summer. "Muoi" opens in theaters across the country, July 17; and "Epitaph," July 19.

〈올인〉에서 이병헌의 아역으로 데뷔해 탄탄한 연기력을 선보이고 있는 진구 씨가 영화 〈기담〉을 들고 YTN STAR 시청자를 찾아왔습니다. 진구 씨는 〈기담〉을 찍으면서 아주 특별한 경험도 했다는데요. 함께 만나보시죠.

[리포트]

지금 충무로에서 가장 주목하고 있는 배우, 진구가 올여름 공포영화 〈기담〉으로 색다른 변신을 시도한다고 합니다.

[인터뷰:진구]

"YTN STAR 시청자 여러분 〈기담〉이란 영화로 찾아온 진구입니다."

Q) 맡은 역할은...?

A) "의대 실습생 2년차 '박정남'이란 역할을 맡았는데, 성격이 약하고 시체를 사랑해버리는 연약하고 유약한 지금까지 진구가 보여주지 못했던 그런 역할입니다."

영화 〈기담〉은 1942년 서양식 병원 '안생병원'을 배경으로 벌어지는 미스테리한 공포이야기인데요. '정남' 역을 맡은 진구는 이 영화에서 생애 첫 베드신을 찍었습니다. 그런데 그 상대는 바로 산 사람이 아닌 서늘한 시체였습니다.

Q) 시체와 베드신을 찍었다는데...?

A) "답답하죠, 아직 연기도 잘 하지 못하는 게 말도 없고, 쳐다보지도 않고, 표정도 없는 사람하고 변태적이지 않게 보여야하는 예쁜 사랑을 보여야하는 거라서 어려웠고..."

2003년 드라마 〈올인〉에서 이병헌의 아역으로 데뷔를 한 진구는 영화 〈달콤한 인생〉, 〈비열한 거리〉, 〈사랑따윈 필요없어〉등에 출연하며 연기경력이 얼마 되지 않았음에도 벌써부터 연기파 배우란 소리를 듣고 있습니다.

Q〉연기파 배우라는 호칭에 대해...?

A) "나이에 비해 연기 잘 한다는 소리를 듣다보니까 배우로서 어떤 길을 가야 될지 정해진 것 같아요. 전에는 잘생기고 꽃미남이란 소리를 듣고 싶었는데 지금은 연기 더 늘었다는 소리가 꽃미남이라는 소리보다 100배 더 기분 좋은 것 같아요."

진구는 그동안 주로 남성답고 선 굵은 연기를 보여왔지만 시트콤〈 논스톱〉에서 보여준 코믹한 모습이 자신의 실제 모습과 더 닮아 있다고 합니다. 카메라 밖에서는 잘 웃고 장난치기 좋아하는 진구는 종종 선배연기자들과 똑같은 성대모사를 해보여 주위사람들을 즐겁게 한다는데요.

"저한테 왜 그랬어요. 정말 날 죽이려고 했습니까?"

"정인아 나야. 팔이 힘이 안 들어갔는데... 좋은 방법이 있다..."

Q) 연기를 안 한다면 어떤 일...?

A) "배우가 아니라면 백수? 죽을 때까지 이순재 선생님처럼 나이들어서는 나이든 사람만이 할 수 있는 연기를 하고 싶어요."

Q) 시청자에게...?

A) "오는 8월 1일 1942 경성 공포극 〈기담〉 개봉합니다. 저와 같은 감동 받아서 돌아가실만한 그런 영화니까 많이 봐주세요. 더불어 저도 사랑해주세요."

Horror Film Season Kicks Off in Korea

Tis' the season in Korea when moviegoers expect to see spine-chilling horror films as a respite from the sweltering heat.

Son Heekyung takes a look at some of the summer's most horrific Korean productions.

For many in the country it means barbecues, beaches and bone-chilling horror flicks.

This season's horror lineup has taken on a medical theme.

In the film ‘‘Return,’’ a 10-year-old boy kills a child after awakening unexpectedly during surgery.

The mystery is why his life has turned for worse after the operation.

Another horror flick with a medical element is ''Epitaph.''

Here, a medical intern's arranged marriage is called off when his fiancee commits suicide.

Twenty years later, the man, now an elite doctor, is haunted by a bizarre series of events.

The chilling tale, set in the 40s, revolves around the doctor who runs the best Western-style hospital in Gyeongseong - what is now Seoul.

Besides the frightful elements, the film adds a touch of class in its portrayal of old Gyeongseong.

So what is the appeal of summertime horrors?

Looks like a great interview & pics of Jin Goo from the Movist, maybe it's my eyes.. JG's aura is really quite similar and increasingly resembling LBH's. :blush:
