Song Joong-ki news: 'Descendants of the Sun' has created a worldwide following

When "Descendants of the Sun" was released in February, its producers and lead stars, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, did not expect that it would catch fire worldwide.
The Korean military drama tells the story of a South Korean Special Forces unit captain (Song Joong-ki) and doctor (Song Hye-kyo) who found love in the epidemic-ridden country of Urk.

The show, which aired from February to April, has captured the hearts of many Koreans. However, the fire spread to other neighboring countries, such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, China, and Thailand. The fire even reached, to some extent, some countries in the West and have made the lead stars household names worldwide.

The show has been so popular in China that the Ministry of Public Security warned its citizens against watching the show. However, instead of stopping the people, it even fueled curiosity, thus making it one of the most popular Korean TV shows in China.
Because of the show's popularity, there have been rumors that there might be a sequel for the show. In a report on MSN, it is said that KBS is having an internal discussion about the possibility of a sequel.

However, the head of the drama department of KBS said that a part 2 is still not sure because "actors do not decide until they read the script." The report further added that there is also a possibility that another show might be made inspired by "Descendants of the Sun."
Due to Joong-ki's popularity, it has been reported that the actor has joined the ranks of Korean A-listers and high earners, such as Lee Min-ho and Kim Soo-hyun. In fact, it is said that he earns more than the two actors' combined earnings. Allkpop revealed that the actor has earned around $2.46 million in product endorsements alone.

Song Joong-ki dons red suit in Hong Kong

Actor Song Joong-ki, the star of TV drama “Descendants of the Sun,” donned a perfectly tailored red suit at a fashion show in Hong Kong. 

Dior on Monday released photos of Song attending the Dior Homme Winter 2016 Live Show in Hong Kong. He pulled off a classic red and black micro-check suit, matched with black lace-up shoes, looking stylish and smart. 

Song’s look in Hong Kong was handpicked by Dior Homme designer Kris van Assche. 

More photos of Song will be released in Vogue’s June edition and on its website.

Song Joong Ki to endorse Chinese cosmetic brand Proya along actress Zhang Ziyi

Acror Song Joong Ki, the boyish-looking hunk of hit TV series 'Descendnts of the Sun', is breaking all the records of popularity in China and Korea.

Reportedly, the South Korean superstar bagged a lucrative endorsement offer worth 4 billion won (S$4.7 million) from Chinese cosmetic brand Proya. This would make him one of top earning actors beside A-list hallyu stars such as Kim Soo-hyun and Lee Min-ho.

The 31-year-old, who cracked a two-year deal with the cosmetic brand, will be the new face of Proya along with top Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang.

According to the reports released by the China Internet Information Center (CIIC), Allkpop stated that Joong Ki's endorsement income from Chinese industry equals 2.8 billion KRW.

The data collected for the study is based on the actor's endorsement earning in China for past 6 months.

"Song Joong Ki, who is all the rage now in Asia thanks to 'Descendants of the Sun,' is rising in value. In China, the price for his endorsements skyrocketed. In half a year, he makes 16 million Yuan, which is higher than what Lee Min Ho and Kim Soo Hyun makes combined. Currently, around 10 advertising agencies are sending him various offers," the report read.

Meanwhile, Joong Ki's agency Blossom Entertainment chose not to comment on the figure but agreed that Joong Ki was getting big international offers.

"There are many articles making a guesswork on Song Joong Ki's pay but we can't give you the exact amount. But it is true that he is receiving many offers from global brands both domestically and internationally," the agency told Sports Chosun.

Song Joong-ki to visit China for fan meetings

Song Joong-ki, the star of the South Korean TV sensation "Descendants of the Sun," will make a tour of eight Chinese cities to meet his international fans, his agency said Friday.

Song shot to Asianwide fame for his role as Army Capt. Yoo Si-jin, who falls for a female surgeon, Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo), in a fictional war-torn country where he is part of South Korea's peacekeeping force.
 

The tour will begin in Beijing on May 14 and take him to Wuhan on May 21, Guangzhou and Shenzhen on May 27-28, according to Blossom Entertainment.

Song will head north to Shanghai on June 5 and then travel back to the south to visit Hong Kong on June 11. It would be his second visit to Hong Kong since the promotional tour with actress Song on April 4.

He will also meet fans in Chengdu on June 17 and end the pan-China trip in Taipei on June 25.

On Sunday, Song's "fan meeting" event drew some 4,000 fans to Seoul's Kyunghee University. He is scheduled to hold a similar event in Bangkok on May 7. (Yonhap)
