I haven't posted in ages on soompi. I gotta say I can't wait for the english album/EP! (so excited beyond belief!!) I agree with wonderr23 that the album may not be bubblegum pop like their previous songs not sure too much whether there will be a hint of retro still though.. Sunye said on her twitter that:

I think it's about time they stepped away from the retro. We all know that they rock this concept like no other and we've seen other groups try to attempt it but were nowhere as successful as these girls were.

I've personally been waiting for a hiphop/r&b concept from these girls for a long time. These girls can really pull off anything. I mean sunye can fit just about any type of concept. Yeeun definitely has the strong voice. We all know that sohee isn't all about her cute face, and yoobin, well I think this girl will be fitting it the most, I don't need to explain that. And if sunmi were here, I think her husky voice and her ability to look good in anything will definitely contribute to the appeal that the wonder girls have.

I do like Claude Kelly and Darkchild's music, and I hope that they're giving the girls some of their good songs.

I desperately want to see the Wonder Girls shine again!

(to the above poster, how is retro "childish"? I think it's something that up until these girls did it, no one else really attempted to go forward with retro and have it done really well. The wonder girls have done it countless times and they've kind of been known for being able to do it extremely well. It's not retro, it's different.)

This 2nd list was the harder to do, cuz international WG websites either lost interest or were out of touch when WG focused on Chinese-speaking areas in the 2nd half of 2010.

Soompi's archived back pages is the best available resource, except for 2 obstacles.

Firstly, the posted links to TV clips are mostly dead links after YT is done deleting the uploads (copyrights). So no idea what some of you guys shared if there was no accompanying title or description!

Secondly, I had previously used Tinypic to re-post photos. The images have 90-day expiry dates if left unviewed, which is indeed the fate of my old pics (esp. during the 2DT Korean comeback period). It also basically indicated no Soompier had read the pre-August back pages during the last 3 months, or else those pics would not have disappeared.

Better save the images if you are a collector then.

I hope WG sticks with retro, but with an updated sound.

But no more bubblegum stuff (which I think love_song refers to), cuz the girls are leaving their teenage years behind.

The genre is also one reason why SNSD still can't cross over to the mainstream Asian markets, despite their overall popularity.

The most important criterion for WG is melodious songs.

In other words, classic pop -- which Tell Me, Nobody (despite its shades towards bubblegum) & 2DT (despite stealing from Wham!) have abundance of.

I still trust JYP more to compose these songs more than American songwriters.

Thing is, Claude Kelly & Darkchild may not necessarily translate well in non-Westernized ears either.

Esp. with the alternative song versions in Korean or Chinese. Unless something magical happens.

Already, I had seen 2DT making a couple of 2010 Worst Song lists by Korean music pros at the end of last year.

Now, they may have other reasons, but I also think 2DT may not be too Kpop or bubblegum for them (given the music put out last year, esp. by debuting idol groups).

WG potentially tackling a power ballad like 'Always Without Me', or even a typical Jobros-type song if they wrote one for the girls, is gonna be a tremendous leap of faith.

'Americanization' is one thing, but Asian artistes can become too 'Americanized' too.

I am still wary after what happened to BoA, Utada, Se7en, even JYP's own J-Lim in the USA. (Also Singapore singer Sun Ho, for those familiar with her.)

The hip USA producers & musicians that collaborated with them were highly competent & produced decent results.

But their music tracks ended up, frankly, unmemorable. Worst yet in BoA's case: repeatedly no longer in vogue, which was so frustrating since she is so talented & was gunning to be a music trendsetter.

As such, I want WG to adhere to their strengths. The girls are versatile but do not have a high skills ceiling, not yet anyway.

I also hope WG retains its 'group' visual look. Again, this collective identity is one of their assets: they always look natural & never 'corporate' in whatever concept, with their individual personalities shining through without needing to dress like individuals.

When any artist is down they're there to kick them and talk junk, but as soon as they are doing well they'll be the first to say "We always believed that you could do it. Oh yes you have pointed out whats been annoying/nagging me about kpop. its those bubblegum pop songs thats been coming out along with new idol groups. Im good with retro and im also hoping the girls can expand the genres they do. wishing for some maturity to their music but not too much. moderate is best.

In a way, I am glad WG is not active in Korea right now. Or even be physically there.

There is a lot of fan angst & media soul-searching over there (the latter already picked up by the press here in SG, if not elsewhere in Asia too), given Kara's uncertain future & to a lesser extent T-ara's fluctuating fortunes.

Girlgroups as a whole are under the spotlight, more so these current controversies involve fairly-established artistes & not just aspiring newcomers.

It would have be awkward if WG is in town, even when they are not directly involved.

No-win situation: last year's breakthrough girlgroup was missA &, all credit aside, they did not reach 2NE1's level in 2009.

SNSD pretty much filled the power vacuum at the top for all of 2010, as a result. In turn, a lot of the new girlgroups followed that blueprint since it is in vogue.

'Bad Girl Good Girl' is another great example of a classic-pop song, though. Remember everyone commenting how fresh it sounded at first hearing?

I half-wish JYP had kept that song for WG, although I don't fancy our girls rolling around the floor per the dance routine. Hahaha...

whether it be retro concept again or r&b concept, our girls can rock it as always. although their basic concept is retro, but all their songs doesn't sound the same. i mean, take example of snsd. they tried to change from cute to sexy and then retro. but their music still sounds the same. no offense to snsd fans. snsd or other girl groups may have more hits songs than our girls but did their song as memorable as wonder girls' song? i still keeping my faith in JYP. our girls will comeback stronger than ever and Wonderfuls will always support them!!^^
