Movie Audience Falls in August

A lack of summer blockbusters has apparently driven down the number of moviegoers for the month of August, traditionally a month registering strong box office figures. Korea’s multiplex movie theater chain CJ CGV announced Thursday that less than 17 million people nationwide went to see a movie in August. The figure has risen 1.2% since July, but has fallen nearly 20% year-on-year.

CGV blamed the drop on the slim picking of good summer blockbusters. Last year the theaters were booming with such spectacular films as “D-war” and “Remember U518.” These two movies alone drew more than 13 million, while no domestic film matching the audience drawing power was released this summer.

The biggest ticket power this summer was “Mummy 3,” which vied for the top honor with “The Dark Knight.” The film about a husband-and-wife adventurer team and a resurrected Chinese emperor barely edged out Dark Crusader in the nationwide survey. However, the latest installment of the Batman series beat out the Chinese mummies in Seoul. Meanwhile, the acclaimed Korean western “The Good, the Bad, the Weird,” which opened in mid-July, was still going strong in August, attracting over 2 million viewers.

Latest Korean blockbuster to be screened at Toronto film festival

200809031227131126_1.jpg

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- The latest South Korean blockbuster is to be screened next week at the international film festival in Toronto, according to the festival's website.

"The Good The Bad The Weird" will premier next Friday and Saturday at the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which opened on Thursday for a ten-day run, the website said. The film was selected to be part of a non-competitive gala section.

Reportedly the nation's highest budget film, "The Good The Bad The Weird" is one of few Korean films to clinch both critical acclaim and commercial success at a time when the country's movie industry is on a downward trend.

South Korean director Kim Ji-woon's tribute to spaghetti westerns is set in 1930s Manchuria and depicts three men hunting for hidden treasure.

TIFF, North America's leading film festival, will screen 312 films from 64 countries, including independent South Korean filmmaker Noh Young-seok's debut film, "Daytime Drinking."

"Tireless Mountain," directed by Korean-American Kim So-young, and Korean-Canadian director Helen Lee's "Hers at Last," a sublime drama about two women on the streets of Seoul, will also be introduced at the festival, the website said.

The Korean media has picked up the news about BH endorsing for Toyota, a worldwide major automaker. Not sure if the news came from the Toyota website or one of Byunghun's official sites (JOFC?).. but things are definitely building up and looking good..

Just a quick note,

Our hunnie will appear on TV CM for TOYOTA starting Sep 8 in Japan. :w00t::w00t::w00t:

http://netz.jp/lineup/rav4/index.html

Toyota has announced the miner remodeling of their vehicle RAV4 yesterday.

I could not see Byung-hun’s name anywhere on their press release.

But this CM news is broadly spoken among Japanese fans and Toyota’s car distributing company for the model "Netz " is now disclosing the news to everyone if you call up their shops.

So I think it’s OK now to go!

RAV4 is quite popular and Takuya Kimura (HERO) was also in the CM once.

And Toyota is planning to sell the same model in South Korea next year.

Thanks to Japanese angel, gomata-san for this BH-RAV4 advert poster photo_0013.jpg

According to empas, BH entertainment via JOFC today, confirmed that Hunnie has endorsed the car. The CF will be aired nationwide in Japan from 8 Sept onwards.

One thing to add is that, he will be also singing the theme song of the CF em55.gif

We'll surely be able to watch the CM, too.. not to worry.. the Japanese fans are really esctatic about this and they can't wait to share everything with all.

A few Korean stars have been endorsing Japanese brand names but doing it for Toyota (a huge established automaker in the world) is especially top appreciation at its best. Definitely going to be a rave, indeed.

Not counting joint ventures with Samantha Thavasa and Capcom (for Lost Planet), this is BH's second Japanese endorsement with a Japanese company after NEC.. both of which are really high-profile names in the business world.

http://netz.jp/lineup/rav4/index.html

http://www.toyota.com/rav4/index.html

The Toyota RAV4 (pronounced "rav-four") is a compact crossover SUV built and marketed by the Toyota Motor Corporation. The car was introduced in Japan and Europe in 1994 and sales began in North America in 1996 to cater to consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the maneuverability and fuel economy of a smaller car. The early success of the RAV4 paved the way for other compact SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute, and the Subaru Forester. Its name stands for "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive," although not all RAV4s have four wheel drive, which is optional in some countries. In most countries, the RAV4 is the only compact SUV from Toyota. In other markets, it is the crossover counterpart of the FJ Cruiser.

Just an update, if not wrong, the song for the CF is actually the song that BH sang during his Arena Tour last year.

Yeah.. that could be right. I was checking & uploading some clips and watching Arena Tour clips of BH singing the song, it sounded better and nicer.

As long as it's BH singing the song.. all that matters.

Telluride Review: The Good, The Bad, and The Weird

by Alex Billington

good-bad-ugly-telluride-review.jpg

As a finale to the Telluride Film Festival and as my last screening, I saw The Good, The Bad, and The Weird, an immensely fun and absurdly badass Asian spaghetti western. I've been anxiously awaiting an opportunity to see this film ever since I first caught the trailer back in May. After finally seeing it, I can definitely say it delivers so much more than I expected. This film is playing at every big festival - Cannes, Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and Fantastic Fest - and that should tell you a bit more than just that it's a great festival film - it's a fantastic cinematic experience as well. Although I enjoyed the culture and storytelling in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, I had an exceptionally fun time watching this.

The Good, The Bad, and The Weird is an exciting fusion of Asian spaghetti westerns, Sergio Leone's The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and even Ben Hur and The Road Warrior. The Bad (Lee Byung-hun), one of the best killers in all of Manchuria, is hired to steal a treasure map from a man on a train, but before he can get to it, The Weird (Song Kang-ho) shows up to rob the train and ends up finding it first. As he attempts to make his escape, The Good (Jung Woo-sung), a bounty hunter out to kill The Bad for his reward, shows up as well. The then film travels from gangster hideouts to small towns and back, before eventually ending up in the desert where the greatest all-out battle between everyone takes place.

It's challenging to review this film and challenging to explain why I loved it. The Good, The Bad, and The Weird is a kind of film that particular fanatic moviegoers can soak up and enjoy while others will end up bored. There's no way to really critique the story or the directing, because if it's entertaining to watch, then it has simply achieved its objective. Song Kang-ho as The Weird deserves the most acting honors because his quirky character and natural humor was what really carried the story and brought such vibrant life to the film. Director Kim Ji-woon's fight choreography and visual aptitude is also worth mentioning. It's amazing to realize that they pulled off such an epic and entertaining story for under $20 million!

Although the cinematography is sometimes shakier than the Bourne movies, it's quite colorful and exquisitely composed (despite quick cuts during action scenes), which is the most I can say besides suggesting watching all 120 minutes of it on the big screen. To give a good comparison, there are fight scenes in the middle of The Good, The Bad, and The Weird that rival those in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, a production that cost 10 times more than this. And the characters each bring their own unique fighting style to the film as well: either brutally sinister, unusually skilled, or playfully accurate.

My expectations were sky high for The Good, The Bad, and The Weird, but it definitely surpassed them. I'm already counting down the hours until I get to see it again at Fantastic Fest in a few weeks. There's not much at all that I can complain about, besides some nauseating camera work, but besides that, this film was an absolutely entertaining Asian adventure from start to finish. It's vastly better than Sukiyaki Western Django and never boring, so don't think twice, just add it to your list of movies to see. Watching this two hour epic unfold in front of my eyes was like watching every great gun fight and action scene from cinematic history crammed into a spaghetti western with three amusing characters - pure bliss!

Telluride Rating: 9.5 out of 10

I've always always liked Toyota's Rav4, more than the Honda CRV. And, i know i shud dream bigger for the choice of an expensive car but I've always loved the Rav4. Well, i actually settled for a smaller car the Toyota Altis. Anyway, another hottie is endorsing it.... Orlando Bloom.

Bh really does big-named brands only. I am excited to hear him sing again.
