Hello... is anyone home? May I borrow the magic wand PLEASE!!!

I think the article said sth like the August Cover page of "Korean TV Magazine" in Japan is confirmed;

On the right side print... Recollecting LBH's 18 years memorable/moving pics archive :)

Looks like BH is the veteran among the stars features :sweatingbullets:

I don't know about others but.. LOL.. there's no magic wand or love potion or deep magic.. or whatever. :P Just a simple fan's old-fashioned way of good faith in BH, feel-instinct and friendly fate. If it happens, that's cool.. if it doesn't, then it's ok. Unknown to us.. a better deal might present itself.

Thanks for the magazine highlight, Janice. Indeed.. BH is absolutely one of the older if not the most senior Hallyu Stars among the Korean movie actors. Going on 38 and 18 years in the business.. this man is not slowing down but constantly challenging himself to the fullest. Unlimited.. unbreakable.. undeniable.

2008 Sees Korean Stars Swarm Hollywood

Date: June 28, 2008

by Nigel D'Sa

[iMAGE] Actress Jun Ji-hyun or Gianna Jun

While Hollywood seems to be gaining ground at the Korean box office in 2008, a growing number of Korean stars are invading Hollywood's home turf this year, bringing Korean talent into view on the world stage. Local celebrities such as Jun Ji-hyun, Lee Byun-hun, Jung Ji-hoon, Jang Don-kun, and Korean-American Daniel Henney are currently filming or have already wrapped roles in major US studio productions.

Actress Jun, going by her English name Gianna Jun, recently completed the shooting of her lead role in Blood: The Last Vampire, a US – Hong Kong co-production set in the Tokyo of 1970. Jun plays Saya, a vampire working for a covert US government agency that hunts and destroys demons. She is assigned to a military school where she must find out which of her fellow classmates is a demon in disguise.

The English-language horror-thriller will be model-turned-actress Jun's Hollywood debut. Rising to celebrity status with her 2001 Korean feature My Sassy Girl, Jun's fame spread throughout Asia and she went on to star in several more features including Windstruck (2004) and Daisy (2006). The highly anticipated Blood is currently in post-production and is slated to be released in June 2009.

Meanwhile, actor and pop-sensation Jung Ji-hoon (a.k.a. Rain) made his Hollywood debut this spring with a supporting role in the Wachowski brothers' futurist thriller Speed Racer, which crashed and burned at the box office. That hasn't dampened the energetic performer's spirits. He is currently filming his lead role in the Wachowski and Joel Silver-produced Ninja Assassin.

[iMAGE] Singer and Actor Jung Ji-hoon

Jung plays Raizo, an orphan who leans the Ninja tradition only later to turn his back on it. The film is being directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) and is shooting in Berlin, Germany. Jung went through rigorous training to prepare for his role in the martial arts film. The actor is known all over Asia and in the US in his pop-incarnation Rain. He starred in Korean TV drama Full House before making his film debut in director Park Chan-wook's I'm a Cyborg, But That's Ok in 2006. Ninja Assassin is expected to be ready for release in January 2009.

Top Korean star Lee Byung-hun will take on a role similar to that of his colleagues Jun and Jung. He is currently filming scenes in his Hollywood debut, G.I. Joe, an adaptation of the popular action-hero comic book series. Like Jun in Vampire, his character is a member of an elite US military unit, and like Jung, he will be playing a ninja with a troubled past.

As ‘Storm Shadow', Lee joins the G.I. Joe team of highly trained recruits, each with his own specialty skill. Their job is to take on an evil and powerful criminal syndicate led by Cobra, a notorious arms dealer. Lee's character, Storm Shadow, is well known to readers of the comic and was even spun-off into its own series.

Lee is a popular star at home and all across Asia. He has starred in films such as Once in a Summer (2006), Kim Ji-woon's A Bittersweet Life (2005) and Kim's upcoming release, The Good, The Bad, The Weird, the must-see ‘oriental western' of the summer. Lee is also starring in a France-US co-production called I Come With the Rain, by Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung.

The big-budget G.I. Joe is a Paramount Pictures production and is directed by Stephen Sommers whose previous films include Van Helsing and The Jungle Book. The film also stars Channing Tatum, Rachel Nichols, and Dennis Quaid. It is slated for release in the summer of 2009.

[iMAGE] Actor Jang Dong-kun

Actor Jang Dong-kun plays a lone assassin of the warrior breed, in his first Hollywood project, Laundry Warrior. The big-budget (US $47 million) fantasy-action feature is a US-Korea-New Zealand co-production. It also stars celebrity actress Kate Bosworth and Geoffrey Rush. Set in the American badlands, Jang plays an Asian warrior hiding out in a small western town where he encounters a knife-throwing circus beauty (Bosworth) and the town drunk (Rush).

Jang is known in Korea for his roles in the hit films Friend (2001) and Taegukgi (2004) and for his international debut in the Chinese blockbuster, The Promise (2005). He has recently wrapped shooting on Laundry Warrior, which was shot mainly in New Zealand. The film, co-produced by Barrie Osborne, a force behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Lee Joo-ick (Seven Swords) is the feature debut of Korean-American Sngmoo Lee. The film is now in post-production with a release date expected in the second half of 2008.

With comic-book series all the rage, we can't leave out Daniel Henney's present project, X-Men Origins: Wolverine a prequel to 20th Century Fox's successful X-Men franchise. Henney will play ‘Agent Zero', a mutant member of the Weapon X program with excellent marksmanship and the power to control electricity. Like Jang's Warrior, the film is also shooting in New Zealand. Directed by Gavin Hood, and produced by lead star Hugh Jackman, the film is slated for a worldwide release on May 1, 2009.

Henney, 28, is an American-born biracial model-turned-actor who rose to fame after moving to Korea, where he made himself a familiar face in Korean living rooms by starring in MBC TV drama My Lovely Sam Soon in 2005. He made his big screen debut starring opposite Uhm Jung-hwa in the 2006 romantic-comedy Seducing Mr. Perfect. Last year saw him win public and critical praise for his second feature My Father, which was a hit across the country.

So be prepared for a strong Korean presence in Hollywood that is currently underway and will be in full swing by 2009, by which time all of the above films will have come to a screen near you. Whether as a sultry vampire, stealthy ninja, warrior on the run, or mutant superhero, Korean talent is gaining a global audience and Korean faces may one day be as familiar as a Pitt, a Clooney, or a Jolie.

^ Thanks so much for the magazine scans, ylin.. it's great to know that Singapore would always have a cool coverage for BH. I really love the Cannes' photocall pic of the 3 guys.. such heartwarming chemistry. Come to think of it.. I don't remember any of the other Cannes' participants having such fun & fantastic Kodak moment like the GBW team. :P Despite all being top actors.. they've complemented each other so well and I'm truly glad seeing our vivacious LBH working with the ever-so-excellent actor, SKH and the charming one, JWS.

And the clip.. wahhh.. there are still so many unseen BTS from the movie, merci beaucoup ylin & Ping! For a 4-hour movie (unedited version).. GBW definitely have lots and lots of goodies to share. It's getting so excitingly anxious waiting for the real deal and movie moment to arrive.

I always thought JWS to be such a serious actor (based on his work).. but with SKH-ssi and our Hunnie.. he's just like a little boy, having the best time of his life and the 2 hyungs really indulged him! We could never have such incredible trio of actors working together so well like this.

LBH's SPEECH AT THE 55th NHK RED-WHITE (Kouhaku Uta Gassen) 2004

Hello. I am an actor, Lee Byung Hun from Korea.

Today, I am here to congratulate the 40th anniversary of establishing the normality of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan. Before that, I would like to express my appreciation. We have been thinking how to express our appreciation to your great support. And today, I am very grateful to have this chance by appearing in this great event. Through TV or movies, we have more exchanges between the two countries,

I wish the relation between the two will be much closer and more friendly. Moreover, from the next year (2005) I hope we would not distinguish the image culture of the two countries, and expect it will be the worldwide scale of the oriental image culture, and wish relations will get more deeply involved. Thank you.

The ER clip is entertaining, with the 3 stars being naughty and funny with their antics.

I'll be missing ER, KBS World for 3 wks. :tears: Will miss some good news perhaps of GBW.

Korean industry readies summer B.O. fightback

Written by Han Sunhee

2008061916431810031bl5.jpg

SEOUL -- After nearly three months without a local film at the top of the B.O., the Korean film industry is hoping the success of crime pic "Public Enemy Returns" heralds the beginning of a long, hot summer. Directed by reliable helmer Kang Woo-suk, the pic took in $8.82 million from 1.4 million admissions in its four-day opening weekend.

Distributor CJ Entertainment says it now expects "Enemy" to tie "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skulls' " record of reaching the two million ticket mark in just eight days of release.

As has been widely reported, local films have had a terrible time at the box office this year. According to multiplex chain CJ CGV, total admissions for local films in the first half of 2008 were 34.1 million or 47% of the entire audience.

For many countries, that would be high, but it's the lowest number in Korea since the first half of 2001. Since then, Korean films had ruled the charts, securing more than a 50% market share over the last six years.

While some industry commentators suggest the reduction of screen quotas (the number of days per year movie houses have to play Korean movies) is the cause of the downturn, others point to weak infrastructure and low investment returns.

The debate will continue, but it is clear the large number of low-budget films that flowed into theaters in the first half of the year did not connect with auds.

Summer, often the preserve of horror pics, this year sees the return of the big-budget fare to try to win back the public.

The most anticipated film is Korean Western "The Good the Bad the Weird," which opens July 17. Pic has been slightly re-edited by helmer Kim Ji-woon since its preem in Cannes, and received a PG-13 certificate from the Korea Media Rating Board. Production shingle Barunson is expecting the new rating will help it attract a young public.

The new pic from Lee Jun-ik (helmer of the $60 million-grossing hit "The King and the Clown" and "Radio Star") is "Sunny," a $7 million budget Vietnamese war epic that follows a wife in search of her singer husband. Industry-watchers hope Lee's sensitivity will again pay off for investor and distributor Showbox.

Also in the running is crime thriller "Eye for an Eye." Helmed by K.T. Kwak ("Friend" "Typhoon"), the heist pic portrays the war of wills between a famous detective (Han Seok-gyu) and a notorious intellectual criminal (Cha Seung-won). Produced by Taewon Entertainment, the thriller hits the theaters July 24 and is distributed by Lotte Entertainment.

The final Korean title with summer blockbuster potential is "The Divine Weapon," distributed by CJ Entertainment on Aug 14. The $10 million historical drama is based on the true story of King Sejong's efforts to develop a high-tech weapon to fight against China's Ming emperor.

South Korean movies continue to make their way around the globe to vie for prizes and reach a wider audience. Some notable trips to international film festivals include feted director Kim Ki-duk's latest work "Dream," the anticipated summer blockbuster "The Good, the Bad, the Weird," which received rave reviews at the Festival de Cannes in May, and creative animations and documentaries.

"Dream" (Bimong) by celebrated director Kim Ki-duk will contend for the Golden Shell at the 56th San Sebastian International Film Festival running Sept. 18-27, the festival announced recently (www.sansebastianfestival.com). It is the only Asian film in the competition pool against five other works. It is Kim's third work after "3-Iron" and "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.. and Spring" to appear at the event. Kim has won the award for Best Director at Venice ("3-Iron") and Berlin ("Samaritan Girl"), while "Breath" competed at Cannes.

Starring top Korean actress Lee Na-young and Japanese heartthrob Jo Odagiri, it is about two people connected through dreams, a man who dreams compulsively and a woman who sleepwalks dangerously. Fans can look forward to seeing "Dream" here in the fall.

Kim Jee-woon's "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" starring top stars Lee Byung-hun, Song Kang-ho and Jung Woo-sung will appear at the 33rd Toronto Film Festival running Sept. 4-13, festival organizers announced Thursday (www.tiff07.ca). This "kimchi Western," as the Toronto Festival calls it, is the first Korean movie to be featured in the prestigious gala section, which selectively screens 20 "high profile, major impact" films out of some 300 that are invited. The Canadian festival is considered among the top cinema events alongside Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

The action flick's export to 11 countries has already been sealed, and talks with American and Japanese buyers are currently underway, said the movie's local publicist. The screening at Toronto, a major playground for the film market, is expected to boost sales. It opens in theaters here July 17.

Korean Animations in Brazil

Creative homegrown animations will travel to Brazil for the 16th Anima Lundi International Animation Festival, the Pusan (Busan) International Film Festival organizers announced Friday. Four films will contend in the shorts section: "Christmas in Taxi" by Jo Young-kwang, "Eden" by Kim Hye-won, "Look Around" by Lee Kyu-tae and "Wanted" by Kim Woonki. The festival runs July 11-20 in Rio de Janeiro and July 23-27 at Sao Paulo (www.animamundi.com).

"Bab Mook Ja" by Min Sung-ah and "Bulpyeoni" by Choe Hyeon-myeong will compete in the Shorts for Children. "The Things She Can't Avoid in the City" by Park Ji-youn will be screened in Anima Lundi's out-of-competition section Panaroma. It was recently shown at the 12th Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF) and film buffs will be able to see this bittersweet story about a woman's survival in the urban jungle at the upcoming 12th Puchon (Bucheon) International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), July 18-27, and Taiwan's 15th Women Make Waves Film Festival in the fall.

"Her Summer," a poetic documentary by Ahn Sun-hee, will compete in France's 19th Marseille International Documentary Film Festival, which runs Wednesday through July 7 (www.fidmarseille.org). Ahn captures the dexterous, hardworking hands of a woman who has spent 80 years of her life on domestic chores. It was shown here at last year's 9th Women's International Film Festival in Seoul (WIFFS), and will vie for the top Marseille prize against 19 other documentary movies.
