As die hard Lee Byung Hun fans, @luwali 196   and I would not miss the opportunity to see him in a movie on a wide screen.  Therefore watching “The Magnificent Seven” is a must. It is a pleasure to see BH throwing knives, shooting, and moving agilely seemingly without effort.  We need to thank Antoine Fuqua and the cinematographer and giving us some wonderful closeup shots of LBH.   We would have liked to hear more dialogues but being one of the seven stars, we thought LBH received a fair share of screen time.

@rubie So happy that Director Kim Jee Won (KJW) would want to work with Lee Byung Hun again.  KJW somehow managed to extract the best acting out of LBH whenever they collaborated.

An LBH Hong Kong fan told me that “Master” willl be shown in Hong Kong at the end of December.   We are so looking forward to this movie.

[Guest Film Review] "Addicted"

Source: Hancinema.net

photo773215.jpg

The 00's decade signaled a trend where romantic films were injected with supernatural and/or mystery elements, in order to stand out from the plethora of entries in the category. "Ditto" and "Il Mare" are two distinct samples, as is the case with "Addicted".

Two brothers, race-driver Dae-jin and carpenter Ho-jin live happily in the same house along with the wife of the latter, Eun-soo. One day, both siblings get into traffic accidents at the same time, although in different incidents. They end up in coma. Dae-jin wakes up a year later, believing he is Ho-jin, to the point of having the same feelings for Eun-soo, even considering her, his wife. Eun-soo has to face both his feelings and the sense of loss for her husband.

photo773214.jpg

Park Yeong-hoon directs retains quite a slow pace, preparing, in essence, the spectator for the shocking finale. This pace becomes a bit tiring, at times, especially when compared to contemporary films, but, actually, fits the development of the story quite nicely. The rhythm, along with the overall, dark atmosphere implemented by Kim Byeong-il's cinematography, are the ones responsible for the film not being another romantic flick.

Park focuses much on the interaction between the two protagonists, although Eun-soo's dilemma and general feelings have a more central place in the film than Dae-jin's. This tactic benefits the most by the fact that Lee Byung-hun and Lee Mi-yeon have great chemistry with each other, since they have also cooperated in the past in similar roles ("The Harmonium in my Memories"). The fact that they are both gorgeous also helps, in this aspect.

photo773213.jpg

Lee Byung-hun portrays, quite well, a complicated, enigmatic character, exemplifying the fact that Eun-soo, and consequently, the spectator, cannot understand what he is thinking. Lee Mi-yeon is great in her role, as she is quite persuasive as both a happy wife, and a sad, confused woman. The award she received from Grand Bell was well justified. Furthermore, both the performances are in perfect harmony with the pace and the general aesthetics of the film.

"Addicted" is a film that stands apart due to its direction, script, and acting, and subsequently, on a higher level than most of the entries in the genre.

Lee Byung-Hun Stars In New Korean Thriller “Single Rider”

By Ella Palileo  Asian Movie Pulse

Korean mystery film Single Rider is poised to set the world ablaze with a superstar cast and an exhilarating story. Screen Daily reports that the film debut of director Lee Zoo-young has already won a deal with Korean independent sales house, M-Line Distribution.

Single Rider follows Jae-Hoon, a branch manager of an investment firm who send his wife, Soo-jin, and his son to Australia. Soon he suspects his wife of adultery and begins to follow her. All hell breaks lose when a shocking truth unfolds.

Korean superstar Lee Byung-hun takes on the role of Jae-hoon. Many know Lee for his critically acclaimed roles in I Saw The Devil, Masquerade and Inside Men among others. This year, he played knife-wielding assassin Billy Rocks in the big blockbuster Hollywood remake of The Magnificent Seven.

Soo-Jin will be played by the beautiful Gong Hyo-jin. Gong is best known for her roles in the films Crush And Blush as well as Boomerang Family. She hasn’t appeared on the silver screen since early 2013 so fans are doubly excited to catch her in Single Rider.

An So-hee, a former member of the K-pop group Wonder Girls, plays a supporting role. Recently, An So-hee played Jin-hee, the high school cheerleader in the zombie hit Train to Busan.

Lee Byung-hun, Gong Hyo-jin and An So-hee are reportedly excited over their collaboration on such a thrilling film. “I am well aware of Lee’s acting capabilities. This is something I am looking forward to.” Gong said in Korean JoongAng Daily.

Single Rider is produced by Warner Brothers – who just recently ventured into local Korean productions in Korea.

Shot in Australia, Single Rider is a uniquely intense Korean film that is sure to titillate its audiences. Currently in post-production, the movie is set for a theatrical release in spring 2017.

Asian film festival launches in London

By Shim Sun-ah

SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Yonhap) -- An inaugural Asian film festival will open in London this week to increase Europeans' awareness of mainly Korean films, the South Korean culture ministry said Tuesday.

The London East Asia Film Festival will screen 40 films from eight Asian countries, including South Korea, Japan and China at various theaters in the city.

Since this year's festival focus is on Korean films, more than half of the films invited were from South Korea.

They include the opening film, director Kim Jee-woon's double agent film "The Age of Shadows," Park Chan-wook's erotic thriller "The Handmaiden," and "Tunnel," a disaster flick by Kim Seong-hun. Among other Korean films on the list are Kang Woo-suk's "The Map Against the World" and "Sprits' Homecoming" by Cho Jung-rae, and "The World of Us" by Yoon Ga-eun.

In addition, the lineup also includes the latest works by Asian master directors such as "Beautiful 2016" co-directed by China's Jia Zhangke and "Creepy" by Kiyoshi Kurosawa of Japan.

After the screening of some of the films, there will be guest visit events involving 12 helmers, six actors and six producers. A retrospective for award-winning director Park Chan-wook was also prepared for fans of Korean films.

"Three" by Hong Kong director Johnnie To will close the 11-day festival on Oct. 30.

The film festival was organized by Jeon Hye-jung, former executive director of the London Korean Film Festival who currently leads the Korean Artists Development Agency, with help from the British cultural scene, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

"Britain, the biggest film market in Europe, is like an advance base for the world film market," said Jeon, director of the London East Asia Film Festival who has made various efforts to increase the British people's awareness of Korean films over the past 10 years. "Korean films are now taking a central role in the Asian film market but now is the time to ponder over accompanied growth of Korean and other Asian films considering the fast growth of Chinese capital," she said of the reason for launching the Asian film fest.
