'Terminator Genisys' Tops Weekend Box Office

Source: TBS Seoul (Radio Station)

(Opening) 'Terminator Genisys' topped the local box office last weekend while local naval thriller came in second. tbs eFM's movie critic Jason Bechervaise gives us more details in this report.

(Report) Hollywood continued its strong run this year with 'Terminator Genisys' starring Arnold Schwarzenegger topping the local box office last weekend with 1.2 million admissions or $9.2m in revenue.

The franchise has a proven track record in Korea as illustrated by the success of 'Terminator Salvation' that amassed over 4.5 million viewers in 2009, and 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' was even re-released in 2013.

The film also features local star Lee Byung-hun in a supporting role emblematic of his success in Hollywood making him the only Korean actor to have successfully worked in America's iconic film industry.

The strong opening weekend of the latest Terminator film also comes after it emerged that Korean films saw its market share drop to 43% - the lowest since 2009. That being said, Korean films tend flex their muscles in the latter end of the summer as seen with the unprecedented success of Roaring Currents last year.

This summer, Choi Dong-hoon's 'Assassination', Ryoo Seung-wan's 'Veteran' and Park Heung-shik's 'Memories of the Sword' are expected to attract the crowds though they will have to compete the with the likes of Ethan Hunt in 'Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation that hit screens on July 30.

Also enjoying success this summer is 'Northern Limit Line' which saw a drop of just 9.8% last weekend in terms of admissions and looks to sail past the 4 million ticket barrier imminently, but local films will have attract even stronger numbers to counter the Hollywood threat.

'Northern Limit Line,' most-viewed Korean film of this year

SEOUL, July 10 (Yonhap) -- A film depicting a bloody inter-Korean naval clash in 2002 became the most-watched Korean film so far this year, the movie's distributor said Friday.

Released on June 24, "Northern Limit Line" has attracted 3,872,070 viewers as of 12:40 p.m., the largest number for any Korean film that has opened in local theaters this year.

The previous record was 3,872,015 set by "Detective K: Secret of the Lost Land," out in February.

The domestic war movie is expected to smoothly pass the 4-million mark around this weekend.

Directed by Kim Hak-soon and starring Gim Mu-yeol, Jin Goo and Lee Hyun-woo, the film depicts the naval skirmish off the South Korean border island of Yeonpyeong on June 29, 2002, which left six South Korean sailors dead and 18 others injured.

Meanwhile, the Hollywood action blockbuster "Terminator Genisys" surpassed 2 million in attendance on Friday morning, the ninth day of its run, according to its distributor.

The fifth installment of the Terminator series, out in local theaters on Thursday last week, has sold some 2.01 million tickets as of Friday morning, Lotte Entertainment said.

Directed by Alan Taylor, "Terminator Genisys" serves as a prequel, sequel and reboot to the first four Terminator movies.

In the new film, Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his iconic cybernetic robot character, joined by a slew of newcomers, including "Game of Thrones" actress Emilia Clarke and "Divergent" star Jai Courtney, and South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun.

A  LBH fan in Hong Kong was very kind to forward me this photo that another LBH fan took from an IMAX theatre.  Most other posters and billboards that I have seen  featured mainly Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke.

"Northern Limit Line" ranked first at the weekend box office, collecting 872,664 viewers on 777 screens across the country.

After winning its first weekend at the domestic box office, on June 26-28, the movie succumbed to the strength of "Terminator Genisys" the following weekend.

Disney/Pixar's "Inside Out" jumped to second place on its opening weekend, drawing 678,716 people.

The comedy-adventure showcases how the emotional control center works in the mind of an 11-year-old girl through five animated characters representing joy, sadness, fear, anger and disgust.

It was followed by the fifth installment of the Terminator series, which added 647,763 this weekend to its haul of over 2.6 million.
