'Smugglers' puts breathtaking female divers at heart of crime plot

optimize

Director Ryoo Seung-wan's upcoming action thriller "Smugglers" is loaded with twists and layers of an intriguing crime plot, but it is ultimately a story that celebrates the art of female camaraderie.

Set in a small fishing town in the 1970s, the story revolves around "haenyeo," literally translated as "sea women," who dive into the deep sea to gather abalone, conches and other ocean life to make a living.

There is nothing glamorous about the female divers living under squalid conditions, but a high-stakes smuggling scheme changes their fate.

In the film, Kim Hye-soo plays Jo Chun-ja, a tough yet ambitious diver who wants to make money by whatever means possible, while Yum Jung-ah portrays her colleague Oh Jin-sook, the daughter of a small boat's captain.

After a chemical factory is built in Guncheon, the sea women struggle to collect decent harvests and begin to salvage smuggled goods thrown into the sea to make money.

Their risky business comes to an end when customs officers swoop in, resulting in the deaths of Jin-suk's father and younger brother. Chun-ja escapes the scene, but Jin-suk is arrested and serves a jail term.

After three years, Chun-ja, now a glamorous city woman who trades smuggled goods in Seoul, is compelled to return to Guncheon due to threats from Kwon Sang-sa (played by Zo In-sung), known as the "smuggling king."

Once best friends, Chun-ja and Jin-suk are at odds at first due to misunderstandings from past events.

But they once again become partners, and work to retrieve diamonds thrown into the sea and take revenge on those responsible for their painful past.

In the climax, the female divers are forced to jump into the deep sea, where sharks lurk, to collect a bag of diamonds and are chased by knife-wielding opponents equipped with oxygen tanks.

But in the water, the veteran divers know how to deal with their enemies and support each other to fight them off in an exciting action scene.

While women in Ryoo's past works were often portrayed as peripheral characters, the female protagonists and their sidekicks in the maritime action film form a strong bond to confront their exploiters and the patriarchal society.

Veteran actresses Kim and Yum, who have drawn acclaim for their charismatic roles, show an amazing ensemble performance for the female buddy movie with a tightly knit plot.

It is also fun to watch Zo's portrayal of a merciless Vietnam War veteran and the kingpin of a nationwide smuggling business, as well as Park Jung-min's performance as Jang Do-ri, a sailor-turned-businessman in Guncheon with hidden secrets.

The villains offer comedic relief at times, but the bloody confrontation by their gangs armed with knives, axes and chains stokes tension at the right moment.

Ryoo, best known for "Unjust" (2010), "Veteran" (2015) and "Escape from Mogadishu" (2021), among other films, leverages his proven expertise in the crime action genre in the summer movie.

It will also allow viewers to revisit the 1970s with bold retro fashion and old music that matches the mood, directed by singer-songwriter Chang Ki-ha.

"Smugglers" will hit local theaters July 26. (Yonhap)

*** The main trailer of "Moving" is equally striking just as much as the main poster. It starts with a glimpse into the past of three secret agents leading lives as monsters for top-secret missions. The children, who have inherited their parents’ abilities, herald an unexpected threat with lines like, “Is it true that abilities can be inherited?” and “They can never know about this.”   :happydance:

'Moving' aims to put the super back in Korean superhero movies

In a country where superhero movies have failed to enter the spotlight, save those in the the "Avengers" universe, upcoming Disney+ original series “Moving” dares to tell a “Korean-style superhero story" and prove that Korean superpowers are indeed super.

“Moving” is based on the webtoon of the same name by Kang Full, considered of the earliest and most successful webtoonists in Korea who has had a number of hits including “Love Story” (2003), “Apartment” (2004), “Timing” (2005) and “Neighbor” (2008). Kang also directly participated in the adaptation of his webtoon by writing the script for “Moving.”

“I wanted to tell a Korean-style superhero story,” Kang said at a press conference at CGV Yongsan in central Seoul on Thursday. “What I mean by that is I wanted to give a historical twist to the typical superhero setting. I asked myself, if there are superheroes in Korea, what would they fight for and what would move them? And the answer came from the history of Korea — our experience of being split into two countries, our emphasis on family. So a Korean-style superhero story would focus on these aspects.”

“Moving” surrounds a group of people who have special abilities or superpowers, and tells a story spanning two generations of characters who fight to protect their loved ones. The series drew attention when it was announced for its reported budget of 50 billion won ($39.5 million) and its all-star cast, including Han Hyo-joo, Zo In-sung, Ryu Seung-ryong, Ryoo Seung-bum, Cha Tae-hyun and more.

A lot was changed from the original webtoon’s story, and extra characters and more background information was added to the adaptation of “Moving,” according to Kang.

“Two entirely new characters were added in the adaptation, and I wanted to give fans of the original webtoon a kind of present — so I added background stories to the original,” Kang said. “I hope that these new characters and extra stories offer viewers an added layer that they can enjoy.”

The creators of “Moving,” including Kang, director Park In-jee and other producers, spent years preparing for the adaptation — three years to be exact, according to Park. Parts of those preparations were revising the script numerous times, pondering over how to differentiate a “Korean-style superhero story” from typical Hollywood superhero films, and applying world-class visual effects to the screen.

“We really put a lot of thought into differentiating it from Hollywood superhero films,” Park said during the press conference. “Hollywood superheroes often fight for the greater good or some grand meaning, but our superheroes simply fight for their loved ones.”

As for the visual effects, according to visual effects supervisor Lee Sung-kyu, “Most films have about 2,000 cuts of visual effects, while ‘Moving’ has 7,540. This threefold jump in visual effects will make watching ‘Moving’ a never-seen-before experience for viewers.”

“A lot of readers and viewers of my work have commended me for having a humanism and world view in my stories, but, really, what I look for first and foremost is entertainment,” Kang said. “I think only of how to entertain people and how to make people have the most fun while reading or watching my work. I hope ‘Moving’ — with our Korean-style superhero story — will entertain a lot of people.”

“Moving” is set to premiere seven episodes out of a total of 20 on Aug. 9.

Disney+ sci-fi action series 'Moving' expands original webtoon's universe

optimize

The upcoming Disney+ sci-fi action series "Moving" features "Korean-style heroes" who are seemingly ordinary people but fight for their loved ones with hidden superpowers, its screenwriter said Thursday.

Based on the eponymous hit webtoon by Kang Full, the 20-episode series tells the story of a group of superpowered individuals who hide their true abilities from the world in order to protect their families from danger.

It features a star-studded cast, including Zo In-sung, Han Hyo-joo, Ryu Seung-ryong, Ryu Seung-bum and Cha Tae-hyun, among others.

Kang, the creator of original webtoon "Moving," said the drama series used a multi-layered story structure that spans over 30 years and added new characters to expand its cinematic universe.

"Although the series is based on my original webtoon, I wanted to tell a different story and ended up writing a 20-episode series," Kang said during Creators Talk, a promotional press event. "Watching two episodes would be like watching a two-hour movie."

Kang said he put the characters' narratives into the historical context of South Korea, which still remains divided following the 1950-53 Korean War.

"What is a Korean-style hero? I wanted to focus on circumstances and causes that would compel a hero to fight," Kang said. "In this drama, each character fights for their loved ones, whether that's family, a friend, a lover or a colleague, not for the moral cause of saving the world."

The director, Park In-jae, behind the second season of the Netflix zombie thriller "Kingdom" (2020), and films "The Mayor" (2017) and "Moby RickRoll'D" (2011), said "Moving" encompasses a wide variety of genres, including family drama, action, sci-fi and romance.

"We inserted action sequences into each episode to captivate viewers," Park said. "It also has a family story, a high teen story and a love story through 20 episodes."

Lee Sung-gyu, the chief visual effects (VFX) supervisor, said dynamic images of people flying and action sequences are the outcome of two years of global collaboration.

"About 60 studios from nine countries participated in the VFX production. We particularly focused on creating realistic visuals so as not to distract people's attention from the story," Lee said.

The first seven episodes will be released on Aug. 9, with two episodes arriving each week for five weeks. (Yonhap)

*** On the July 22 installment of Yoo Jae Suk's YouTube talk show 'Just an Excuse', Jo In Sung and Cha Tae Hyun greeted viewers to promote their Disney+ series, 'Moving'. The filming took place at a cafe and soon upon arrival Jo In Sung ordered drinks for them. He surprised Yoo Jae Suk with his unexpectedly frugal(?) tendencies because when he looked at his receipt, his eyes immediately widening in shock at the price of three drinks. Seeing his reaction, Yoo Jae Suk quickly asked, "Was it that expensive? How much was it?", and took the receipt from Jo In Sung to check the total. After a moment, Yoo Jae Suk gazed at Jo In Sung and observed, "In Sung, you must be tight these days?" He answered half-jokingly(?), "I'm struggling these days." This had Yoo Jae Suk bursting out laughing, as he said, "Hey, hearing you say that is quite... refreshing?" Jo In Sung then added on, again taking on a half-serious(?) tone, "I don't work on very many projects a year."  Soon afterward, Han Hyo Joo also joined up with them and they began chatting about their upcoming projects, as well as what they've been up to lately. Han Hyo Joo then revealed that she has been training for a triathlon, after her trainer at a rehabilitation swimming facility suggested it. Here, Jo In Sung pitched in by saying, "I also have bad knees and a bad hip, so I went to receive rehabilitation at a swimming facility as well. The trainer there also suggested that I try out triathlon training, but since I haven't been paid yet, I haven't been able to go back much. But I'll be paid soon, so maybe I'll try it out," causing laughter once again. - Hahaha - Jo In Sung is always very funny. You can watch the full episode of the show below.   :kitty:

*** On July 19, Jo In Sung had an interview with a news outlet about the upcoming film, 'Smugglers'. On the show, he thanked  his sunbae Kim Hye Soo for supporting him on the set of the movie where they co-starred in. This is their first time co-starring in a project.  He says it was her that made him feel―and even act better. "There I was, all nervous, and Kim Hye Soo told me, 'Don't be nervous at all. You're doing great.' Once I heard that, I just had to pull the scene off.", he said, jokingly adding, "With Kim Hye Soo's affection, I can do the impossible. Her encouragement gave me an unexplainable strength, making me carry out the scene. It wasn't me who made it possible. 'Kwon Pil-sam' was brought up with Kim Hye Soo's love.", he said, expressing how thankful her warm words were. "I improvised the part where 'Kwon Pil-sam' flips a lighter, and it was the first scene I acted with Kim Hye Soo. I just flipped it and Kim Hye Soo told me, 'Jo In Sung, you are so good. Wow, how come you're so good at acting?'." "How could I possibly screw it up after she rooted me like that?", Jo In Sung said, giving Kim Hye Soo credit for his part as 'Kwon Pil-sam' once again.  :heart3:

The main trailer that was released along with the poster begins with the stories of three secret agents Doo Shik, Joo Won, and Mi Hyun who had no choice but to live as monsters for a top-secret mission in the past. A mysterious man’s voice that says, “If you’re not a monster, then you should die because you’re useless,” foreshadows the unfortunate fates of the three agents who were abandoned after being sacrificed for the country.

The clip also shows Mi Hyun and Doo Shik’s baby Bong Seok floating in the air, indicating their supernatural powers were inherited by their child. Doo Shik says with a serious facial expression, “It should not be known, ever,” conveying that the children who inherited their parents’ superhuman powers are also in danger.
