아랑 (Arang) Teaser Trailer Released

arangtr.jpg

Arang... Arang.... what could that possibly mean. Trying to interpret Korean titles sometimes offers you quite the challenge, especially when they're thrown out there, like this 아랑 (Arang). So, I thought, this is a horror thriller, what could that Arang possibly mean?

Arang is two things: the sediments left after the soju making process (which, like, isn't what you'd expect to be tied to a horror film, unless the heroine gets drunk often), and of course the protagonist of a famous legend from the Joseon Dynasty. Arang was daughter of a deputy in Miryang -- not too coincidentally, the Korean title of Lee Chang-Dong's upcoming 밀양 (Secret Sunshine). Trapped by one of her servants, she was faced with the possibility of being raped, but instead of losing her virginity she ended up dying at his hands. Of course Daddy started looking for his precious daughter, without success, which forced him into depression, and early retirement. Little problem: all the people replacing him ended up... dead. Wahhhh... who could that be?

Now you can imagine how the rest of the story goes. Yes, it involves ghosts, but this horror thriller starring Song Yoon-Ah and 마이걸 (My Girl)'s Lee Dong-Wook will only use it as its backbone, and of course it's set in a modern setting. This is the first important film role for Lee, and Song continues to try to change a little her image of the gentle woman next door she built on Tv. Release is set for June 29, and here's a first look:

<조이뉴스24>

S. Koreans Get Ready for a Summer of Horror

By Nigel DSa

Assistant Editor / Staff Writer

3489-20060614112029.jpg

With the summer season approaching, local movie-goers can look forward to a host of new horror films, a Korean cinema staple during the hot and humid months of July and August. Korean film companies bank on the local tradition of beating-the-heat each summer by going to a bone-chilling horror movie in an ultra-air-conditioned theater.

The most anticipated of horror films coming out this summer is indisputably The Host which had its world premier at Cannes last month and is scheduled for a July 27th domestic release. The third feature by director BONG Joon-ho, The Host received rave reviews at Cannes, and with its all-star cast of SONG Kang-ho, BYEON Hee-bong, and BAE Doo-na, it is likely to become the blockbuster hit of the summer. While billed as a horror-thriller, the film blends together various genres, and centers around a monster that lives in the Han River and devours humans.

Arang, starring SONG Yun-a and LEE Dong-wook, will be the first local horror film of the summer, with a release date of June 28th. Based on a Korean folk tale about a Minister's daughter who dies to defend her honor when one of her father's servants attempts to rape her, the film will retell it in a modern setting.

Apt., by director AHN Byung-gi, whose previous horror hits included "Phone" (2002) and "Bunsinsaba" (2004), will open July 6th and centers on an apartment complex where, when the lights go out at the same hour every night, mysterious murders take place. The film is based on a popular comic that was serialized on the internet.

Other horror films this summer season include the ironically titled To Sir with Love which deals with the gruesome revenge some school graduates take on their former teacher (August release), Cinderella, in which high school girls who underwent plastic surgery to become prettier fall prey to a serial killer, and Chonsolui Kohyang / Untold Story: The Red Forest a Chosun Dynasty period film about twin sisters who fall in love with the same man. Love turns into tragedy as a wicked grudge sets in (no release date set yet).

Korean Horror Moves to New Haunted Territory

200606270007.gif

There is something afoot in Korean horror movies. From "Arang," to be released on June 28, via "Apartment," out in July, to "To Sir With Love," "Cinderella" and "Untold Story- The Red Forest" all to be released in August, indigenous horror movies have evolved to a higher level. In an effort to wash away the cheap shocker taint, the budgets are growing and the casts are becoming stellar. This summer, even moviegoers with sophisticated tastes are bound to find one good enough for them.

Quality Horror

Horror films have long been a gateway to success for new directors due to their relatively low budgets. If a W2-3 billion (US$1=\958) investment including marketing costs lured more than 1 million viewers, the movie was considered to have hit the jackpot. But the new slew of horror films are betting on quality. "To Sir With Love" cost W4.2 billion, "Apartment" W4 billion, "Arang" W4 billion and "Cinderella" W3.6 billion ? all pretty close to the average for Korean movies, which stands at some W4.5 billion.

More and more established directors are eyeing horror films as their next screen project. Ahn Byung-gi, well known for such horror films as "The Scissors" (2000), "Phone" (2002) and "Bunsinsaba" (2004) promises to "show people what real horror is" with "Apartment," the movie he directed based on a comic book. Bong Man-dae, who specialized in melodramas like "Sweet Sex and Love," has changed tack with "Cinderella." Dream And Pictures, the producer of "Arang," say horror films like "Phone" and "A Tale Of Two Sisters" have succeeded both in terms of quality and box office and even produced stars since 2000. As a result, there has been a growing perception that horror films can no longer stint on quality.

Quality Screamers

Time was when all horror movies had to do was make audiences grip their arm rests. Films like "Whispering Corridors" and "Bunsinsaba" cast teenage newcomers to do the screaming. But this year is seeing experienced actresses who built their career in more respectable films and TV dramas, from Ko So-young in "Apartment" to Song Yun-a in "Arang" and Do Ji-won in "Cinderella", turn to gruesome tales. Ko So-young surprised a few people by choosing a horror film as her first movie in four years since “Double Agent” in 2002.

Fearsome Spaces

Earlier in the decade, "The Scissors" (2000), "Phone" (2002) or "The Red Shoes" (2005) were all about objects with curses attached. This year, the horror is in confined spaces. "Apartment" uses an ordinary contemporary dwelling to scare us witless. In "Cinderella," it is the house where a plastic surgeon lives with her daughter, and "To Sir With Love" is set in the villa of an elementary school teacher where her students get together. "Arang" makes terrifying use of a salt store in the country. "Objects are good for causing immediate horror, but ordinary spaces in our daily lives have a slower, more indirect psychological horror," says a staffer at IM Pictures, the producer of "Apartment."

The Lasting Grudge

One constant, however, is the grudge motivating indigenous Korean ghosts. "Arang" is a new take on the traditional story of a vengeful ghost girl told in North Gyeongsang Province. And if there are no ghosts, it is still the desire for retribution that motivates the evil goings-on. "Korean audiences still want to see traditional ghosts in horror movies. Slasher or hard-gore movies with their relentless splatter of blood don't do well here," says a member of the "Arang" crew.

'Arang' Interesting But Falls Short

By Kim Tae-jong

Staff Reporter

A new movie "Arang" takes its main theme from one of the most popular Korean folk tales, "Arang Tale," and develops it into a mixture of horror and thriller with a modern touch.

While maintaining the gist of the original tale, about the agony of a sorrowful ghost, the familiar tale is suitably changed for the present.

ensor200606291725090arang1.jpg

Song Yun-a stars in the film "Arang."

As the film offers its audiences clues behind a series of tragic accidents, it also attempts to invite them to an interesting game of "whodunit."

But, as the film has a few flaws in story development, it ends up getting stuck somewhere between an unsuccessful horror and thriller.

In the original tale, county governors die strangely, one after another, a few days after taking positions in a town in Milyang, North Kyongsang Province. A young and brave governor who is newly dispatched to the town after the series of mysterious deaths decides to investigate and finds out that they were killed by a female ghost who haunted them. Yet, he learns her visit was to ask for help in settling a grudge.

A maid for a noble family, she was raped and killed by one of the sons. The governor catches and punishes the murderer and has her body buried properly.

ensor200606291725091arang2.jpg

In the film, the brave governor is adapted into a tough female detective, So-young, (played by Song Yun-a), who investigates a serial murder case.

While tackling the case with her partner, she finds that those murdered received e-mails from the same sender before they were killed. So-young and her partner link the mail to a blog, 'Min-jung's Salt Storehouse.'

The investigation reveals the victims were friends and involved in a violent death 10 years ago, but only one of them was jailed.

The four friends raped a girl named Min-jung in a salt storehouse, and when her boyfriend tried to stop them, they beat him to death.

But the mystery regarding the serial murders is still unsolved as Min-jung's ghost is always accompanied by the ghost of a little girl. And the film enters a new phase as So-young's tragic memory of being raped is revealed and overlapped with Min-jung's sorrow.

Overall, the film is an interesting attempt in itself and it could've produced a successful result satisfying both horror and thriller film buffs, but only if it had a slightly more well-organized buildup and tactful revelations.

^Uh-oh.

More press reactions from Twitch:

[Kim Yong-Eon, Film2.0]

The first film of this year's Horror Season, 아랑 (Arang) is based on the famous tale of Arang from Miryang, developing its story in a modern setting. The film never tries to abandon the old-fashioned roots of its legend -- even though the fact it's been used by many past films makes it feel even more conventional -- with flashy tricks, as it's definitely a traditional horror film in all respects. More than following what have now become cliches of the genre, like the focus on 'scary' sound effects, editing emphasizing surprise, or kids twisting and turning their heads to scare viewers, the victims in the film are the first to experience fear, which is one of the elements weakening the impact of the horror in the film.

[Kim Gyu-Han, Maxmovie]

Perhaps the scariest thing for people might actually be the sense of betrayal and mistrust people you trust can give you. Telling the story of a woman innocently murdered and her grudge, 아랑 (Arang) has a different taste compared to other normal horror films. The director's ability to convey people's desires and violent instincts through horror is quite surprising. The film succeeds in advocating the return to traditional horror tropes through 'modern' concepts and style, and Director Ahn focuses on creating a gloomy atmosphere more than shocking bloodbaths. That doesn't mean the film is free of weaknesses, though, as the director threads the conventional when wrapping up the story. It's just the kind of film you should watch if all you ask from horror films is screaming your lungs out in fear.

Despite getting negative reviews, it seems like 아랑 (Arang), the first horror film of the season, will not do too badly at the box office. Figures for June 28 and 29 were released, and the film starring Song Yoon-Ah and Lee Dong-Wook landed at second place behind predictable leader Superman Returns. Released over 227 nationwide screens, the film sold a total of 113,000 tickets so far, with 33,000 in the capital. Predictably poor the results for the 'adult' animation 아치와 씨팍 (Aachi & Ssipak) with 27,900 tickets, continuing domestic animation's bad luck at the box office. Although by the end of the week Superman Returns should still be on top, it looks like the horror will continue to do decently, just like Yoo Ha's 비열한 거리 (A Dirty Carnival), which clearly suffered competition from Hollywood blockbusters and the World Cup, but is slowly improving its score thanks to positive word of mouth. Of course the other big news of the day is that production in all of Chungmuro will be halted for three days, with thousands of film people participating in street demonstrations, as today marks the official reduction of the screen quota to 73 days per year.
