The Faster, the Higher
The Time Taken by Surpassing 10 Million Viewers

by CHO Meanjune / KoBiz

oKuaLMZQLGXPpLlZxRGf.jpg

The speed at which popular Korean films are passing the 10,000,000 viewer “blockbuster” mark has tripled. At least this is the case in a simple, parallel comparison of the time it took Silmido (2003), the first Korean film to accomplish the 10 million admissions feat, and A Taxi Driver, the 15th and most current film to do so. The amount of days needed for a film to become a blockbuster has gradually and steadily been decreasing over the past 15 years with a few, but notable deviations. The fastest to reach the over 10 million admissions mark is Roaring Currents (2014), becoming the highest grossing local film of all time with 17,615,039 moviegoers while CHOI Dong-hoon’s independent fighter action flick Assassination (2015) surpassed 10 million viewers on the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japan on August 15th, 2015.

There is a close correlation between the time taken to exceed 10 million viewers and the number of screens. Masquerade (2012) and Miracle in Cell No.7 (2013), which had 810 and 787 screens respectively, took more than 30 days to surpass the milestone while The Thieves (2012), which was shown on 1,072 screens, managed the feat in only 22 days. The three Korean movies that surpassed the 10 million viewer mark within 20 days all started off with more than 1,500 screens. Among the 10 million viewer toppers, TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) recorded the highest screen share with 1,788 screens.

[Herald Interview] Why Park Hae-il is called a ‘blank sheet’

Hailed as one of Korea’s most versatile actors, Park takes on role of struggling Joseon king

Directors have called Park Hae-il a “blank sheet,” an actor who completely transforms through his roles. With boyish features and a difficult-to-fathom aura about him, Korean film fans say he possesses a Janus-like charm, similar to the Roman god of duplicity -- you can’t quite tell whether he embodies good or evil.

Park says he’s familiar with the description. “Director Yim Soon-rye told me I was like a white canvas that could become any color, after filming ‘Waikiki Brothers,’” he said at an interview Thursday at a cafe in Palpan-dong, Seoul, referring to his first film.

Park debuted as a musical actor in 1995, then crossed over to film in 2001.

His filmography is diverse. He played an ambiguous murder suspect in Bong Joon-ho’s mystery drama “Memories of Murder” (2003), and a shameless womanizer in the romantic comedy “Rules of Dating” (2005). In “A Muse” (2012), a 30-something Park played a 70-year-old poet attracted to a high school student. In 2013, Park played a slacker film director who moves back in with his mother.

In the historical drama “The Fortress,” which hit local theaters Tuesday, Park takes on the daunting task of portraying Joseon’s King Injo at his most vulnerable. The film is set during the 1636 Chinese invasion of Joseon, when the king is forced to retreat to

Namhansanseong, a mountain fortress southeast of Seoul. Under siege, King Injo is faced with the choice of either preserving the lives of his people by surrendering or resisting at the risk of being wiped out by an incomparably powerful army.

“He’s a very suspecting and anxious character,” Park said of his rendition of King Injo.

Park says he’s not an actor who can slip comfortably into his roles. “I’m not agile enough to be joking at one point and then suddenly begin shooting. I tried to maintain (Injo’s) anxiety off-screen as well.”

image
Park Hae-il (CJ Entertainment)

The strain is palpable throughout the film. The camera frequently closes in on Park’s nervous face as King Injo tries to make the right decision amid a sea of diverging arguments raised by his advisers -- choosing between survival and dignity.

The story of King Injo’s eventual surrender is a well-known but distressing episode in Korean history. “It’s a sad part of history and perhaps one that we don’t really want to show the world. … But it’s not every day that as an actor, you come across a script that has this serious an approach to history, which is why I decided to take on the role,” Park said.

SONG Kang-ho and PARK Hae-il Wrap Period Drama
THE THRONE Scribe Moves Up to Director’s Chair

by Pierce Conran KOFIC

eXMYZiMVilZaFTRXjpBa.jpg

The upcoming period drama Naratmalssami (Korean title), which sees stars SONG Kang-ho and PARK Hae-il reunite on the big screen, completed production on January 31. The project makes the feature directing debut of The Throne (2015) scribe CHO Chul-hyun.

The period drama will see SONG play the famed King Sejong, the fourth King of Joseon Dynasty, who is best known as the inventor of the Korean writing system Hangeul. The film will follow the monarch as he invents the revolutionary system with the help of a monk (played by PARK), whose contribution has fallen by the wayside in many historical records.

SONG was on screens as recently as December as the title character of WOO Min-ho’s period crime drama The Drug King (2018) and will be back before audiences among the cast of BONG Joon-ho’s upcoming film Parasite later this year. PARK Hae-il was last seen in ZHANG Lu’s Ode to the Goose (2018), one of the gala presentations at last year’s Busan International Film Festival last October. Meanwhile, the actors have had several memorable meetings on screen in the past, in BONG Joon-ho’s works Memories Of Murder (2003) and The Host (2006).

The main financier and distributor behind Naratmalssami is Megabox Plus M, which had specialized in mid-budget films until last year’s Chuseok holiday period, when it released its first big-budget film FENGSHUI (2018), another period drama. Their latest tentpole, which chronicles the tireless efforts of the people behind Korea’s most prized cultural asset, is expected to find its way to theaters this summer.

THE KING’S LETTERS to Kick Off Korean High Summer Season

SONG Kang-ho and PARK Hae-il Reunite for 3rd Blockbuster

by Pierce Conran KOFIC

photo1069172.jpg

This year’s high summer season in Korea will be ushered in by The King’s Letters, a new period drama starring SONG Kang-ho and PARK Hae-il. From veteran producer and writer but first time director CHO Chul-hyun, the film will be released by Megabox Plus M on July 24.

This true life story follows the joint efforts made by King Sejong (SONG Kang-ho) and the Venerable monk Shin-mi (PARK Hae-il) to create the Hunminjungeum script (commonly known as Hangul) which became Korea’s popular writing system.

SONG is currently on screens in BONG Joon-ho’s Palme d’Or-winning PARASITE, which just crossed the eight million viewer mark at the box office. PARK was recently seen in ZHANG Lu’s Ode to the Goose (2018), which debuted as a gala screening at the Busan International Film Festival last year. SONG and PARK have appeared on screen together twice before for director BONG Joon-ho, in his acclaimed box office hits Memories Of Murder (2003) and The Host (2006). The film also features JEON Mi-sun (Hide and Seek, 2013), CHOI Duk-mun (The Drug King, 2018) and NAM Mun-cheol (Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage).

Director CHO is well known for his collaborations with Director LEE Joon-ik, having penned and/or produced many of his most well-known period dramas, including The Throne (2015), for which he wrote the script.

Though exact dates remain to be announced, the other major contenders during the peak summer season in 2019 will be CJ Entertainment’s disaster film EXIT, the supernatural action-drama The Divine Fury from Lotte Entertainment and Showbox’s period battle drama The Battle: Roar to Victory.

Movie Review

'The King's Letters' introduces unknown contributor to Hangeul

By Kim Boram

SEOUL, July 17 (Yonhap) -- Sejong the Great, the fourth King of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), and his invention of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, is one of the most frequently used and well-known items in local TV series.

For filmmakers and actors, choosing this story may be like walking a tight rope, balancing between familiarity and staleness.

The historical film "The King's Letters," the maiden work by director Jo Chul-hyun, takes the risk. He puts the Buddhist monk Shinmi, who wasn't recorded in official history, at the center of the plot to add freshness to the movie.

The movie opens with King Sejong, played by Song Kang-ho of the Cannes-winning "Parasite," trying to create a new, easy and simple alphabet for his people.

But he faces difficulty in designing a new set of phonetic letters from the offset, while the literary elite of Joseon, like Korean Confucian scholars and politicians, strongly oppose the king's move, claiming that the invention may challenge the Chinese world order. Before the invention of hangeul, Koreans used the Chinese writing system, which was difficult for the lower class to learn.

Here, Monk Shinmi, played by Park Hae-il, appears. Known as the best expert in phonology throughout the kingdom, the eccentric Buddhist priest becomes a key assistant to the king's plan.

Along with his disciples and Sejong's sons, Shinmi leads the project to create a new phonogram tailored to the Korean language through studying other phonetic letters like Sanskrit.

The movie features the detailed story of the underlying principle of the new characters, how consonants and vowels were invented and designed, even though nearly all Koreans are well aware of it.

However, the Buddhist priest's unbecoming participation in the project leads to an eventual clash with Sejong, who is the leader of the Joseon Dynasty, which was founded on Confucianism and anti-Buddhism.

The ideological struggle between King Sejong and Shinmi is the highlight of the movie.

"King Sejong has to go through this project in a secretive way because of the opposition by his officials and the Chinese monarchy," director Jo said at a premiere for the press held Monday. "I wanted to picture the inner conflict between the two closest partners, Sejong and Shinmi."

Moreover, "The King's Letters" doesn't illustrate Sejong as a perfect leader, a commonplace image that people entertain. The king feels guilty about the killing of his wife's family on charges of treason and is anxious about losing his sight before completing Hangeul. But he is still full of energy and willpower to invent Hangeul as a new writing system for his people at the eleventh hour.

Such depiction of a humane hero is well expressed by Song Kang-ho, a veteran actor who took the role of King Yeongjo in the 2015 historical movie "The Throne." Song's Sejong is dignified and majestic but kind and warm-hearted as well.

When he reads the preface of "Hunminjeongeum," an official document describing the principle of Hangeul and explanation of letters and their sounds, his grandeur and stateliness overshadow the familiar and palpable story of King Sejong.

Song said he tried to add something new and creative to the historical hero.

"King Sejong is the greatest of all time, and we know his achievements very well through a number of dramas and movies," Song said. "I think previous pieces rarely focused on the detailed process of Hangeul's invention and the king's personal affliction and loneliness."

However, "The King's Letters" may face criticism for the mitigated role of King Sejong in the project as the movie shows Shinmi is the true inventor of the native script.

Although it adopts one of the few theories that explain the origins of Hangeul, the movie may make audiences feel uncomfortable, regarding the widely accepted notion that King Sejong is solely responsible for the invention.

At the same time, it is embroiled in a plagiarism issue, as a local publisher has filed a lawsuit against the movie's production studio, claiming that the film infringes on its copyright to the story. The litigation is currently under way.

"The King's Letters" will hit local screens next Wednesday.

Cannes 2020: what was in the running (and still might be)

BY MELANIE GOODFELLOW, WENDY MITCHELL, JEREMY KAY, GABRIELE NIOLA, JEAN NOH | 16 APRIL 2020

The Cannes Film Festival was due to unveil the Official Selection for its 73rd edition in Paris today (April 16) until the Covid-19 pandemic forced it to cancel its scheduled May 12-23 dates and subsequently abandon plans for a new slot beginning end-June.

As of today, no new dates had been announced although the festival has said it is exploring other options to keep its work alive. Delegate general Thierry Frémaux has said that he and his selection team will continue to watch and assess submissions until early June.

But what then? Will the festival set a new date in the autumn or hook up with other events? If that’s not an option, will Frémaux announce his Official Selection regardless of whether it can be shown on the big screen? Or will he let go of the films that he and his selection committee have spent the year scouting, watching and reeling in? The latter course of action would be a deeply painful outcome for Frémaux.

Yesterday, parallel sidebars Cannes Critics’ Week, Directors’ Fortnight and ACID confirmed that they were cancelling their 2020 editions.

In this unprecedented chapter in the festival’s history, Screen has decided to go ahead with its annual ’Cannes: Who’s In The Running’ list. It is an opportunity to take stock of the productions that were hoping to get a shot at premiering in Official Selection or the sidebars and still need support to connect them to audiences around the world.

Given the ongoing global production hiatus, these are a selection of the prestige films that will now most likely be available to festivals for the rest of 2020 and, perhaps, even later on into 2021.

......

ASIA

Riding high on the success of Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning, Palme d’Or winner Parasite, Korean cinema could have expected to be in the spotlight at Cannes this year.

Buzzy titles being lined up out of the territory for a Cannes splash included Yeon Sang-ho’s Peninsula. The film is set in the same universe as his zombie thriller hit Train To Busan, which premiered as a Midnight Screening in 2016, but is not an official sequel according to the director. Yeon was also previously in Cannes with animation The King Of Pigs, which premiered in Directors’ Fortnight in 2012.

It was among a number of Korean titles with Midnight Screening potential including Byun Sung-hyun political drama Kingmaker, reuniting him with Seol Gyeong-gu (aka Sul Kyung-gu), the star of his crime thriller The Merciless, which premiered as a Midnight Screening in 2017. The cast also features Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun.

Hong Won-chan’s crime action drama Deliver Us From Evil, starring Hwang Jung-min (Veteran) and Lee Jung-jae (Assassination), was also in post. His film Office debuted in the midnight slot in 2015.

Im Sang-soo’s new film Haengbok-eui Nararo (aka Knocking On Heaven’s Door but no official English title has been set yet) was also in post. Choi Min-sik (Old Boy) and Park Hae-il (The Host) co-star as two men who set off on a journey in search of happiness. The director previously competed in Cannes with The Housemaid and The Taste Of Money in 2010 and 2012 respectively.

Other Korean titles nearing completion included Lee Joon-ik’s historical drama A Book Of Fish, also starring Seol and Byun Yo-han (Socialphobia), although it was not clear if it would have been to Cannes’ tastes.

Ryoo Seung-wan’s highly-anticipated action drama Mogadishu, about North and South Korean embassy diplomats forced to cooperate when civil war breaks out in Somalia, was not expected to be ready in time for a Cannes splash.

Spoiler

There had been hopes that Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui’s Love After Love would be submitted but it got stuck in post-production after the Covid-19 pandemic struck. It is an adaptation of Eileen Chang’s 1943 novella Aloeswood Incense about a young woman from Shanghai who heads to Hong Kong to continue her studies, but ends up working for her aunt, seducing rich and powerful men. Hui was last in Cannes with Boat People in 1983.

Septet: The Story Of Hong Kong – a omnibus of seven films by renowned Hong Kong directors Johnnie To, Hark Tsui, Hui, Patrick Tam, Sammo Hung, Wo Ping Yuen and the late Ringo Lam – had also been submitted.

Chinese titles with parallel section potential also originally included Wu Hai, the second feature from Inner Mongolia director Zhou after award-winning debut Old Beast. Set in the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia in Northern China, the crime drama revolves around a heavily indebted young entrepreneur, married to a woman from a wealthy background, who turns to desperate measures. The production would not now have been ready in time.

There was also strong buzz around Chinese-Austrian director and Michael Haneke protégé CB Yi’s debut feature Moneyboys, starring Taiwanese star Kai Ko as a young Chinese rent boy who sells his body to support his family.

From Japan, Cannes habitué Naomi Kawase’s adoption drama Three Mothers was also expected to be ready in time. Seven of her films have premiered in Cannes to date. She was there most recently with Radiance, which debuted in Competition in 2017.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s World War Two epic Wife Of A Spy was also nearing completion as the pandemic hit. Kurosawa, also a Cannes regular, was last in Official Selection with Before We Vanish, which played in Un Certain Regard in 2017.

From elsewhere in Asia, Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who won the Palme d’Or in 2010 for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, was also believed to be close to completing post-production on his Colombia-shot, Mexico-backed English-language debut Memoria, starring Tilda Swinton.

There was also strong buzz around Vietnamese director Le Bao’s debut feature Taste, about an out-of-work Nigerian footballer who enters into an intense ménage-à-cinq with female middle-aged acquaintances for three days of communal living. Le Bao’s work has been described as being in the vein of Bi Gan and Weerasethakul.

Indian submissions included Prithvi Konanur’s urban thriller Where Is Pinki about a middle-class couple on a desperate search across the city of Bangalore for their eight-month baby after she is seemingly abducted by their housekeeper. It is Konanur’s third film after Waves, which premiered in Toronto in 2012, and Railway Children.

Director Park Chan Wook will return with a melodrama. And Park Hae Il and Tang Wei will star in the new film.

According to the movie industry on the 19th, director Park Chan Wook is currently finalizing the script of his new movie Decided to Break Up (working title). It is rumored that his new melodrama film will present deep emotions.

Also, director Park Chan Wook reportedly decided to work with Park Hae Il and Tang Wei after checking the schedules of the actors that fit the role.

Initially, he started working on The Ax, Le couperet, which he had long been preparing, after finishing British television drama series The Little Drummer Girl. However, the movie faced various issues such as investment, so he has begun preparing for a new film.

After struggling among several projects, he selected the melodrama genre as his next film and worked on the script.

As soon as Park Hae Il completes filming director Kim Han Min’s Hansan (literal translation) and Tang Wei finishes working on director Kim Tae Yong’s Wonderland (literal translation), the two will join director Park Chan Wook’s new film in earnest.

Decided to Break Up is currently preparing to start filming this fall.
