‘Kami no Shizuku’ is the original title of the manga. In the book, there are 2 male characters. The hero is Kanzaki Shizuku, the son of international wine critic, Kanzaki Nodaka, and he is a cheerful, spontaneous character. The father Nodaka dies and his inheritance is passed on to Shizuku and one other male based upon the father’s will. The other character is, Tomine Issei, a brilliant wine critic, for whom wine takes priority above all else, will do whatever it takes in the name of wine, he's a coldhearted enemy and a man with a dark side to his nature. [oh, love to see yong joon in this role!]

According to Agi Tadashi, Tomine Issei’s physical appearance is modeled after YJ. And from the news reports that came out it seems that this is also the role that Yong Joon might take.

Thank you so much for creating the drama thread for Drops of God.

I hope the shooting will start the soonest, of course after YJ' recovery from the shoulder operation.

It's different when he's active leading the Korean Wave. :)

this news was posted earlier in byj thread. the rumour about yong joon taking 'drops of god' as his next project surfaced towards the end of the shooting of twssg last year. news about his next project resurfaced again when he announced in japan that they are currently under negotiation with someone [not really sure who] about a drama based on a japanese manga.

now that it has been confirmed that he will take the drama [producing as well?], what's one the fans mind now is what character he will take and who will be playing the other lead role.

Yonsama, ‘Role of Coldhearted Enemy

and Fukuyama Masaharu’

‘We are really happy that the next drama Yonsama will appear in

seems to be a project based upon a Japanese comic.

Perhaps filming may take place in Japan

and if he is to co-star with a Japanese actor,

there is concern as to who the co-star will be.’

(one fan)

The other day during his Japan visit,

Yonsama himself made the comment,

‘A drama based upon a Japanese manga is being planned’

as this magazine has reported,

that popular manga is ‘ami no Shizuku’

which is currently running in ‘Shukan Morning.’

(Kodansha Publishing)

The hero is Kanzaki Shizuku,

the son of international wine critic, Kanzaki Nodaka,

and he is a cheerful, spontaneous character.

The father Nodaka dies and his inheritance is passed on to Shizuku

and one other male based upon the father’s will.

That male, Tomine Issei, a brilliant wine critic,

for whom wine takes priority above all else,

will do whatever it takes in the name of wine as a coldhearted enemy

and a man with a dark side to his nature.

The story unfolds as the two clash in a fateful search

for the chosen ‘12 Disciples’ ‘Drops of God’ wines.

‘It would be natural for Yonsama to take the lead role of Shizuku,

but Tomine Issei has the appearance of suits and glasses

which is similar to Yonsama’s look,

and there is also the desire to see the gentle Yonsama play a cruel male.

Which part he will play is a big topic among the fans.’

(another Yonsama fan)

‘Kami no Shizuku’ is written by a brother and sister duo

under the pen name of Agi Tadashi.

When we asked them directly, we received this reply.

‘The truth is that in the spring of 2007,

we had wine together with Yonsama in Seoul.’ (Agi Tadashi)

The Korean translated version of ‘Kami no Shizuku’

became the biggest selling Japanese manga in Korea

and it was introduced numerous times in Korean newspapers,

on TV, in magazines and even now,

the series has created a major wine boom.

Mr. Agi continues. ‘YJ also loves wine

and he seemed to enjoy reading ‘Kami no Shizuku.’

The truth is that we told him that we are also fans of YJ.

Tomine Issei’s physical appearance is modeled after YJ.

Because we are fans of each other,

and being that we both are wine lovers,

led to our meeting in Seoul.’

Loves Red Wine More Than White

The location of their meeting was Gorilla,

the restaurant that Yonsama operates.

Yonsama wore a black suit, white shirt, a narrow dark gray tie,

as Mr. Agi revealed his meeting with Yonsama in this way.

‘The thing I remember after meeting with him was

how very kind and sincere he is.

For example, when we were dining

and the others would become so absorbed in talking

that they wouldn’t notice that YJ had served everyone,

dividing up the food among the plates;

he is a casual, considerate person.

Also, even though we had a lengthy conversation,

not once did he boast about his own experiences.

That made me even more of a fan instead.

Also, he showed this side to himself. Yonsama,

who is known for his love of cameras,

also brought his camera to this occasion.

Because Yonsama is an aspiring director,

he was even photographing the wines at an event like this

and the customers.

The photos that YJ shoots carry his distinct flavor

and exuded the richness and sensitive emotions of the subjects

he managed to capture.’

(Mr. Agi)

Yonsama has a wine cellar in his home in Korea

and shows it off to friends that come to visit

because he loves wine so much.

‘He is like us in that he loves wine

and he can hold his liquor quite well (laughs).

His face was slightly flushed (pink colored).

He looked so good holding a wine glass in one hand

and took on the appearance of Tomine.

We talked about the wines that appear in the manga

and how he drinks them.

When he travels overseas, he buys wines to bring home

as he seems to be researching the various wines of the world.

I don’t know if he has an obsessive aspect to his nature

when he likes something,

but he is passionate about research.

YJ seemed to love red wine more than white wine.’

(Mr. Agi)

Then the talk also turned to the drama which weighed on their minds.

‘It is truth that YJ and we would like to see this manga made into a series.

We would like YJ to play the role of Tomine Issei

and we believe that this role will bring out a new appeal for him.

Also, I believe that he wants to play the role of Tomine Issei

and was considering the role.

The only thing is that the formal contract has not been signed yet.

That is why unfortunately, details cannot be discussed.’

If Yonsama desires to take on the enemy role,

this would be the wish of the fans mentioned earlier in this article

but the topic continues to expand

as even Korean fans are saying the co-star will be Song Seung Hoon,

and the debate starts up.

Amidst this, if there is to be a Japanese co-star’

the first choice given among Yonsama fans is Fukuyama Masaharu.

‘The manga hints that both Shizuka and Tomine

are brothers with different mothers?

That Fukuyama has something different from the character

with his soft expression and kind eyes similar to Yonsama’s image

originally became a topic of discussion.

Based on just that, the talk first turned to Fukuhara Masaharu

being a good choice for the co-star.’

(separate Yonsama fan)

If this is going to be a joint Japanese Korean production,

there are difficult problems

such as what language will be spoken, will subtitles be added,

and if Fukuyama becomes the co-star,

the news about him will increase and fans can’t help

but have expectations about this project.

We immediately asked Fukayama’s management agency,

‘We have not heard anything about this,’

was the reply we received.

If that is the case, when we asked Mr. Agi, who said,

as previously written in this article,

that the contract and details still remain unsettled,

‘Fukuyama-san? He’s a bit older than Shizuka’(laughs)’ he replied.

The current situation looks difficult

but on the other hand, there is this other news.

‘If this becomes a Japanese Korean joint production,

I have heard the talk about Fukuyama Masaharu being a good choice as co-star.

But the talk of Yonsama securing the rights to the manga for a drama adaptation

is not to be taken lightly,

and all of the actors in Korea have a possibility of being cast.

It is just that Yonsama treasures his Japanese family and is thinking of them.

There are many fans desiring to see Fukuyama cast in the role

so we are anxious to see the next development.’

(ad agency staff)

The red wine selected by Yonsama and served at Gosireh in Shirogane

is proving to be popular with fans.

Just talking about Yonsama may be enough to possibly put one in a mellow mood.

Hi hi Marikoo and Liezle..thanks for starting the Drops of God thread...looking forward to this drama! Will be so interesting to see YJ play the role of a coldhearted man with a dark side.

Thanks liezle and marikoo for starting this thread. Will be following you gals.

And yes, shrimpy, i think YJ is interested in this role cos it's different from the ones he's done. I can imagine him playing this role. He can look pretty cold and scary . . . I wouldn't want to be on opposite side against him. So . . . I'd just happily stay a BYJ fan :)

BYJ's next work is 'Divine Water Drop'

[sports Donga]8/27/08 07:48

"Rapidly progressing including copyright, etc.…He could become a producer"

BYJ's next work.

Fittingly to the title of the zenith as well as the beginning of the Hallyu hot wind, new work of him, who is quietly undergoing rehabilitation at present, is getting attention not only domestically but also from entire Asia.

BYJ showed off strong presence with drama 'TWSSG' last year, and recently entered ambitious walk toward coming back to acting. Drama 'Divine Water Drop', originally based on a popular Japanese comic, is the one that gathers expectation as his come back work at present.

A source at BYJ's agency, BOF, said on 26, "We are examining the 'Divine Water Drop' as his next work for resuming acting activity, " and "We are hoping that to become a full scale come back work for his acting after the animation 'WLS' where he will play voice acting."

As to the 'Divine Water Drop', every time it became a subject of discussion for making into a drama domestically all the while, BYJ's name appeared along with it as a main actor many times. However, as there was no follow up news, it has been remaining simply as a wish list by production company or his fans.

However, a source at his agency suggested that appearance of BYJ in the 'Divine Water Drop', which had not become concrete all the while, has been pretty much progressed recently. In particular, as they hinted a possibility that he could set out as a producer of the drama along with his agency, making it to attract more interests.

Saying that "At present, discussion on the copyright of the drama is almost reached at a stage of conclusion", this source confirmed that "Although competition has been fierce all the while among domestic companies for purchase of copyright of this comic, it is true that we are discussing it as the first priority."

The Comic 'Divine Water Drop' is the work that is attracting huge popularity domestically also along with wind boom that is blowing in entire region in Asia. Brother and sister of Akitatashi, original creator of the comic, who are known as BYJ's enthusiastic fans, have shown extraordinary love to an extent to take him as a model for a main male character, Tomine Itsei, in the comic.

In particular, BYJ is a wine mania as recognized by himself as well as others. Saying that 'His knowledge of and love for the wind excel pretty good sommeliers", a person close to BYJ hinted that "The point that the Comic 'Divine Water Drop' used wine as its subject could have worked as a bit attraction for him more than anything."

On the other hand, as will for BYJ's appearance in and production of the 'Divine Water Drop' is becoming visualized, a rumor floats around in some circle that even a wind posting his name will be marketed.

That is 'BYJ Wine' taking after BYJ's English name. In overseas, popular stars run 'wineries', that are wine farms' and, further on, would put out products with their names themselves as brands.

However, regarding the rumor of 'BYJ Wine', a source at his agency strongly denied saying "There is not an item at all that has been discussed yet."

Having undergone a shoulder surgery sometime ago, after coming back home (Korea) quietly, BYJ is known to be in full swing in preparation for voice acting for the amination 'WLS', along with rehabilitation therapy as he quietly stays home at present.

Winter Sonata's Bae Eyeing Kami no Shizuku Drama Role

posted on 2008-08-27 13:01 EDT

Bae Yong-Joon, the actor who became a household name in South Korea and Japan with his starring role in the Winter Sonata (Fuyu no Sonata) drama, is considering a drama version of Tadashi Agi and Shū Okimoto's Kami no Shizuku (Les Gouttes de Dieu or The Drops of God) wine manga for his next role. Bae's agency said he is starting the process of developing and negotiating for the drama version. The manga has been so popular in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan that sales of specific wines labels and years mentioned in the manga have spiked in Taiwan and other Asian countries.

The story follows a young man's quest to identify the twelve wines described in his late father's will. Writer Agi's family are big fans of Bae, and Agi had actually modeled Kami no Shizuku's young wine critic character, Issei Tōmine, on Bae. The manga has been running in Kodansha's Morning magazine since 2004.

Bae and his Winter Sonata co-star Choi Ji-Woo are reprising their roles for the Korean/Japanese animated film version of the Winter Sonata drama.

I'm happy that they(BOF) have confirmed the project! really thrilled and looking forward to seeing our BYJ taking on the role of Tomine Issei ,which is 'wee bit evil' but very talented guy who will go to extremes for victory.

I'm reading the manga til vol.10 and i like the storyline very much...and in the manga ,Shizuku is really a cute and spontanous guy......he is clearly the main lead in the story but not sure how they will do so in the drama version so that BYJ is the lead.

Yong Joon-ssi ,Hwaiting!

A source at the Key East told in the morning on that day that "The 'Divine Water Drop' is a Japanese comic, which acclerated domestic and overseas wind hot wind as over 2.2 million books were sold in Japan and 2 million books were sold in Korea," and "Although many domestic and overseas companies has been interested in copyright of its original book all the while, because it is the best seller work that attracted world-wide popularity, Key East concluded a contract on copyright for making it a drama in Korean language with Kodansha on 28."

Continuing on, this source added, "We were able to conclude big project contract where everyone in Asia was interested in," and "We will do all our best (for the drama) to be able to make another good energizer again in domestic entertainment business, based on good original work that moved many people."
