“Project Silence” has confirmed its release date with new posters and a trailer.

On June 13, it was confirmed that the film “Project Silence” is set to release on July 12. Alongside the news, two posters and a trailer were unveiled.

“Project Silence” tells the story of people grappling to survive amid the chaos caused by untethered military experimental dogs. These dogs are unleashed at the bridge, which is on the verge of collapse following a series of collision accidents amidst dense fog.

The two posters capture the characters caught in security camera footage as they confront the unprecedented disaster. Among them is Jung Won (Lee Sun Gyun), an administrator of the Security Office who heads to the airport to send off his daughter Kyung Min (Kim Soo Ahn) to study abroad. Additionally, tow truck driver Jo Bak (Joo Ji Hoon), who hurries to the scene upon hearing about the accidents, and Dr. Yang (Kim Hee Won), the senior researcher behind the secretive “Project Silence,” are seen in the posters.

The red warning sign at the center of the posters, along with the caption, “All survivors become the target,” underscores the imminent danger these characters face.

‘Project Silence’ confirms July 12 opening

20240613050712_0.jpg

“Project Silence,” an action thriller by director Kim Tae-gon, confirmed its theatrical release on July 12, according to the movie’s distributor CJ ENM.

The film revolves around a national security officer Jung-won (the late Lee Sun-kyun), who is stranded on a collapsed bridge shrouded in thick fog on his way to send off his daughter at the airport. Ju Ji-hoon appears as a tow truck driver Jo-bak, who appears on the scene to clear crashed cars from the bridge. Veteran actor Kim Hee-won stars as doctor Yang, who is behind the secretive experiment called “Project Silence.”

A trailer unveiled Thursday shows an out-of-control military experimental dog rushing toward the car on the bridge covered in fog, while Jung-won and his daughter Kyung-min are trying to escape it.

Scenes showing a helicopter crash, a gas explosion and a bridge falling to the sea hint at the movie’s tense situation.

The movie was invited to last year's Cannes Film Festival in the Midnight Screening section, which showcases genre films that have both critical and commercial appeal.

At Cannes, "Project Silence" was sold to buyers from 140 countries, including France, the US, Germany and Japan.

Meanwhile, Lee’s other movie "The Land of Happiness" will also be released in August. The movie, directed by Choo Chang-min, depicts the story of a lawyer, Jung In-hoo (Jo Jung-suk), who defends a soldier named Park Tae-joo (Lee) during a trial involving the assassination of President Park Chung-hee, according to NEW, the film's distributor.

*** I just finished re-watching "Blood Free".   The drama gives a lot of food for thought. It’s just that the series is a bit too slow at times but, suspenseful and the whole thing looks very polished.  The intelligently written story will keep you in suspense. The drama does not follow the usual Korean drama tropes. This drama is a total change of pace. The use of video gaming tools and drones to fight the bad guys is sure to please. CGI and cinematography are great. Imagine a world where meat is bio-technologically generated. This eliminates the need to slaughter animals. I love a great romance drama. This isn’t it. But, gosh, Ju Ji Hoon is a manly man.

*** Ju Ji Hoon's  radical transformation in the movie "Project Silence"  by wearing long hair was his idea. Interestingly, his unique and remarkable appearance in "Project Silence" was reportedly not planned in the script. Instead, it was Ju Ji Hoon himself who recommended the long-haired visual. In previous years, he also suggested to the director if he could do a bold hairstyle in the 2018 movie "Dark Figure of Crime." He asked the director if he could shave his hair off. The usual sleek and dapper looks as seen on  "Blood Free,"  in the new movie he has a completely new look. Ju Ji Hoon takes on a challenging role as a tow truck driver Jo Bak in the movie "Project Silence." For his big-screen comeback, Ju Ji Hoon transforms into a not well-groomed Jo Bak. Initially screened at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2023, "Project Silence" will have its theatrical release on July 12. In addition to this, Jo Bak will also be teaming up with his adorable pet Jody, which will be the film's highlight and not be missed.   :heart4:

Director, co-star remember Lee Sun-kyun as posthumous film 'Project Silence' sees local release

A still from upcoming thriller film ″Project Silence″ [CJ ENM]

A still from upcoming thriller film ″Project Silence″ [CJ ENM]

"Project Silence" is a new thriller film by director Kim Tae-gon that will finally hit local theaters on Friday, more than a year since its initial screening at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May last year. The film has faced numerous challenges and hardships since the Cannes screening, with its biggest being the film's lead actor Lee Sun-kyun's drug scandal followed by his death in December 2023. The director said the film has undergone significant changes since Lee's passing.

"All I thought of was that I had to do my best to complete the film, thinking that was what I could do for Lee,” said Kim in an interview with the local press on Wednesday in central Seoul.

"Project Silence" tells the survival story of people trapped on a foggy bridge leading to an airport, where experimental military dogs are on the loose, creating a deadly environment. Lee portrays Cha Jung-won, a single father and government security administrator, while actor Ju Ji-hoon plays Jobak, a tow-truck driver willing to do anything for his own survival.

Both the director and Ju shared their fond memories of working with Lee, highlighting his substantial contribution to the film during an interview with the local press. Kim noted that Lee's input was invaluable in shaping the characters' movements, emotions and overall dynamics, especially given the film's limited setting on a bridge in the aftermath of a massive car crash.

“Lee helped a lot in that area, including the action in the film, before and during shooting,” Kim said, adding that Lee brought a realistic dimension to the character of Jung-won, drawing from his own experiences and personality. Initially depicted as a typical warmhearted father, Lee transformed Jung-won into a more nuanced character.

Ju emphasized the real-life chemistry between himself and Lee, which translated seamlessly onto the screen.

“We both were people who couldn’t separate themselves from work,” Ju said, recalling that nearly every day, he and Lee met up for drinks to discuss their shoots.

“I think that the real-life connection showed on screen,” Ju said.

Another important part of the film is the military dogs, which the director drew inspiration from his actual experience.

“I once traveled from Mokpo to Seoul on foot during a difficult time. During that trip, I met some wild dogs who kept following me, which was frightening,” he said. This encounter inspired the inclusion of the 11 military dogs in the film, all created through computer-generated imagery (CGI).

Both the director and Ju described the challenges of working with CGI, particularly in creating believable interactions with the virtual dogs. Ju, who had prior experience with CGI in films like "Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds" (2017) and its sequel, noted that the larger cast in "Project Silence" presented unique difficulties. Each actor had to convincingly react to the CGI elements, which required careful coordination to maintain consistent levels of fear and tension.

“As fear is an abstract concept, the level of how each actor expressed their fear was also different. So it took some time to arrange such detailed levels throughout the film,” Ju added.

For Ju, however, CGI was not the only challenge he encountered. Ju said he also faced physical challenges during the shoot. He suffered inflammation of his salivary gland after performing a fire-spitting scene himself, despite having a body double available. Additionally, being a tall man with a height of 187 centimeters (6 feet, 1 inch) made it particularly painful for him to perform scenes while in a car trunk.

Despite these hardships, Ju felt his efforts were validated by the positive feedback from reporters at Cannes. Director Kim also made significant edits to the film after its Cannes screening, aiming to enhance its pace and tension. The final edit, completed on July 5, reduced some elements to prevent the film from feeling overly stifling or dull.

A still from upcoming thriller film ″Project Silence″ [CJ ENM]

"I wanted to remove some parts that seemed excessive," Kim said. "As the film takes place on a foggy bridge, I aimed to reduce the stuffiness and dullness that the audience might feel.

“I believe that this film is more tense and speedier than any other,” he added.

'Project Silence' director, Ju Ji-hoon recall working with late actor Lee Sun-kyun

By Lee Gyu-lee

Seven months after the death of actor Lee Sun-kyun, one of his last films, the disaster epic, "Project Silence," is set to premiere in local theaters this Friday.

“This film has been labeled as ‘Lee Sun-kyun’s final work,’ but as a director, all I could think about was making it well … But I believed I shouldn't deliberately avoid or excessively include elements to avoid that title. I felt preserving the integrity of this work was the best way to honor Lee,” the film’s director Kim Tae-gon told The Korea Times during an interview at a cafe in Jongno District, Seoul, Wednesday.

“I made the film exactly as I originally envisioned. How the external factors affect (the audience) when perceiving the film will vary depending on each person's emotions.”

The big-budget disaster blockbuster revolves around Cha Jung-won (Lee Sun-kyun), who works for the Office of National Security and gets trapped on a foggy bridge with his daughter after a series of car crashes.

With the bridge on the verge of collapse and pursued by another threat — weaponized dogs from a military project — Cha struggles to find a way out to survive and protect his daughter. Alongside fellow survivors, including Jo Park (Ju Ji-hoon) and Doctor Yang (Kim Hee-won), he fights to ensure their safety.

Ju plays the role of a free-spirited tow truck driver who initially clashes with Cha. After reuniting during the disaster, the two, who often bicker, gradually stop butting heads and join forces for survival.

The actor shared that the differences in their acting approach led them to work closely with each other, recalling Lee as being meticulous.

“He was a good colleague and a good actor. It’s not my place as a less experienced actor to judge him, but he was undeniably a trusted actor. His personality was also very straightforward,” Ju said.

“I am the type of person who is like ‘Let’s just give it a try.’ But Lee was someone who would rehearse in great detail until all the question marks were resolved before shooting (a scene). In big-budget movies, there are inevitably many scenes that are unrealistic but accepted as cinematic fiction. So, we had a lot of conversations to make adjustments together.”

Despite over two decades of acting experience, this was Lee’s first time leading a disaster blockbuster. The director expressed confidence in the late actor, believing his extensive and diverse repertoire would allow him to portray the character convincingly.

“Lee had a wide spectrum as an actor, starring in director Hong Sang-soo’s work, in melodramas and sentimental series like ‘My Mister.’ But, he hadn't done a disaster film before. And since he was also a father, I felt he would understand the relationship between a father and a child better than anyone else, so I offered him the role,” Kim said.

“At first, he was hesitant because he’d never done this genre and felt the pressure of playing Cha who leads the film. However, he did an excellent job as the central character, and I was very satisfied.”

The film had its world premiere at last year’s Cannes Film Festival as a non-competing film for Midnight Screenings. Since the premiere, the director revealed he had edited out about six minutes of the film's running time to make it more fast-paced and less sentimental, in order to suit the tastes of audiences today.

Also, the fast-paced, entertaining blockbuster genre was what appealed to Ju, leading him to play the comical character that gives some moments of humor amid an intense, life-threatening disaster.

“This film is made as a popcorn movie. I was drawn to the fun elements, fast pace, tension, and excitement this movie offered as such film,” the actor said.

“(Jo) plays the role of a ‘comma’ in this film. It's a functional character that gives a moment to breathe,” he said. “Rather than intentionally trying hard to be funny, I aimed to naturally radiate the wit that the character of Jo had. Personally, I enjoy the comedy genre.”
