SpoilerAlthough he didn’t want to admit it, Pei Wenxuan still remembered that at the beginning of their marriage, when he lifted Li Rong’s veil, she raised her head and looked up at him with embarrassment and curiosity. Then, when they exchanged cups of wine, she said in a frank manner: “Wenxuan, no matter how we came to be together, having become husband and wife, I still want to live with you for the rest of my life.” At that time, he also seriously thought that he would live with Li Rong, have children and live peacefully for the rest of their lives.
That was, until Li Rong found out that he liked Qin Zhenzhen.
In truth, he didn’t even know what kind of feelings there were between him and Qin Zhenzhen, whether it was love or merely responsibility. They grew up together as children, and he only had her in his heart and hoped to live with Qin Zhenzhen for the rest of his life, but he could not do so.

That day, they were sitting in the carriage on their way home, and Li Rong was silent. He was a little panicked at that time and wanted to explain, but he didn’t know what to explain because he felt that no matter what Li Rong said, she would be right.
Then, Li Rong returned home and after entering the bedchambers, she walked to the table and poured tea for herself. She turned her back to him and asked: “Do you like her?”
Pei Wenxuan stood at the door. He actually intended to say no, but he felt that it would not be completely truthful, so he replied honestly: “I can’t forget her.”
“What is your relationship with her?”
Li Rong held the cup of tea and looked very calm. Pei Wenxuan still told her the truth, their engagement when they were young because they were childhood sweethearts. After his family had fallen, the Qin family annulled the engagement, and Qin Zhenzhen was forced to marry into the Eastern Palace…

After he had spoken, Li Rong didn’t speak for a long time. That silence became a deeply engraved impression of that night for Pei Wenxuan.

“No.” He answered immediately. He looked at her, “You’re my wife.”
“I’m not your wife.”
Li Rong looked at him with a serious expression: “I’m just your ally.”
These words stunned Pei Wenxuan. Li Rong turned and looked out the window and calmly continued: “In this marriage, you and I had no choice and only did it for power. Truthfully speaking, there’s not one bit of love between us. You have someone in your heart, and I have someone in my heart. It’s just that we didn’t make it clear before and had some misunderstandings. Now that it’s clear, it doesn’t matter.”
“It’s not a big deal either,” Li Rong laughed, her tears seemed like they could fall at any time, “Why didn’t you say so sooner?”
Pei Wenxuan stared blankly at her. He wanted to deny it, but he felt that Li Rong wasn’t wrong either. There was no such love between him and Li Rong because it was impossible for a person to truly love two people at the same time. He already had Qin Zhenzhen in his heart, so how could he make room for Li Rong?
Seeing that he still had not spoken, Li Rong lowered her head and softly said: “If you make it clear, then it won’t be a problem. We will live as we have in the future, but I hope Pei daren remembers this in his heart:
I’m not your wife, and you’re not my husband. I don’t care who is in your heart, and you don’t need to care about who I am with. You and I will have our own lives, and we will each have our own happiness.”
“As long as Pei daren promises me,” Li Rong looked at him, her eyes sharp as a hawk, “You and I are allies, so we must never betray one another.”

withdrawal syndrome yup, i could really get used to a 100% happy ending + a three-scene bonus episode of domestic bliss, cdrama-land should shift to this in the future, honestly the Double has one of the best endings. We’ve seen many great c-dramas that start off great and the ending was a mess ,The double’s ending covered every single person in character🫶.

Character-wise it was actually quite solid until the end - the characters’ personalities were consistent (or logically developed), the actions taken by them were consistent with those personalities, mains and secondaries alike. It was visually beautiful and the OTP had great chemistry , So basically - a really fun watch beginning to end.Was it worth watching this for 40 eps? 🤔 (I think so).
Finally I am glad that we exchanged/shared our thoughts with this c-drama 🙂. By the way, I am thinking to watch The Princess Royal (Zhang Linghe) chingu maybe if you have time check it out🙂 (not yet release )

Finally finished The Double. Overall, it was entertaining. I will say that the final 4 episodes were rushed. I was actually waiting for the war scene (especially the famous Xiao Heng scene revealed in the trailer) but it was only shown in the last 10 minutes of ep 40 which made it anti-climatic to me (still a beautiful shot but I needed more fighting scenes). It was too short.
I completely understand why they had additional filming for the 5-minute epilogue because the ending scene of ep 40 was not satisfying at all. I liked how the epilogue was a glimpse into their married life.
The plot fell apart by the end,a feature often seen in cdramas, they crammed 20 eps’ worth of plot into 5, introduced new characters and plotlines last minute.

Finally! The way they shine!
I how some people aren’t finding this couple spicy enough and without conflict, tensions, the ups & downs. All of that makes sense and in other dramas I might feel the same. But what hits for us can be so particular & personal. And for me this time, I’m just relishing how this person that she never knew (before losing everything - being betrayed by husband & in-laws, drugged to be humiliated by a strange man & labeled an adulterer, buried alive and left for dead - this enigmatic man who jailed her and taunted her when they first met…) Now he’s became her solace and a safe place.
She can drink with him and feel free & secure. She can bring him to her intended grave and share her repressed greviances. She can come to his chambers after an attempted sexual assault and sleep peacefully as he watches, waking with a smile. She can trust him implicitly to retrieve her tortured brother and keep him safe. She walks out of that prison and she KNOWS he will be there to take her home. The confidence in him!
Everything else in Xue Fangfei’s life is difficult and complicated. Everything else is a battle. Her father and newly returned brother, she loves them very much, but she also feels immense guilt and they need caretaking and healing.
She has so many burdens that I really like that her love interest is, in a way, simple. They have been cultivating this mutual feeling together, slowly letting it simmer, and now they’re ready to express it openly. He wants her to be herself, and he wants to love her.
And as a viewer that’s what I want for Xue Fangfei: that this one aspect of her life has no battles. It can be easy and drama-free. Just good.

SpoilerI loved the interaction between Li and the Duke. She knows he rushed back for her. And she fully tells him what he is planning. She also knows he’s upset with her. She miscalculated with Yurong, which lead to her almost being hurt and Shijie getting involved. She did break her promise, and this is the first time he’s ever remotely raised his voice to her in anger. Li apologies, but I love she knows exactly how much the Duke is balancing - his responsibility to the kingdom and his need to protect her. She is willing to enter his game fully, and not be a liability. They are headed to the same end after all.
I always enjoy the scenes with the Emperor and the Duke and this was no different. I knew they were close, but had no idea that they go back to childhood. The Duke admits that Li is not a pawn and he has fallen for her. Because of their history, the Emperor relents, slightly, and says to protect her. I will point out when the Duke promises to be loyal, there are qualifiers to his statement.

SpoilerI was so caught up with the showdown between Xue Fangfei and Shen Yurong. It was heavy with grief which I wasn’t expecting at all. She gave him one last chance to do the right thing, to turn himself in, and he knows it’s his last chance….and he still can’t do it.🙁
Then he attacks Li, which she doesn’t expect, but she’s saved by Shijie. It one of more surprising aspects of the episode Li just blurts out her story to Shijie. Maybe it’s because she trusts him, but I also think she’s quite shaken by being back in that house and Yurong’s attack on her. Shijie calls her Xue Fangfei and promises that he is sincere in wanting to help her. Later, he also says he is fine with her not being Jiang Li since she has greatly helped his family. I wonder when he knew.

SpoilerNow that she’s taken care of Jiang Li’s revenge, Li is refocusing on Yurong. She gets him to come to her house, and she torments him. He’s ill equipped to handle her and her smarts. Again, everything she says had a secondary meaning though this time Yurong is sure she is his wife.
I am convinced that the title “The Double” has nothing to do with Li being the “double” for Xue Fangfei and everything to do with sheer amount of conversations that have double meanings. Of course, I don’t actually know how literal a translation the English title is but regardless, it is fitting.

I feel like there is a very messed up parallel in both Duke Su and Crazy Princess getting their "pawn" wounded in Ep 13/14Spoiler
Because obviously we like Duke Su, but he did invite Jiang Li to an assassination play on purpose and it's his fault she got stabbed (he brought his gold fan, he knew it'd be dangerous).
And then both Duke Su and Crazy Princess also try to undress Shen and Jiang Li (allegedly to treat the wound), Li stops the duke, Shen lets it happen (probably because he knows resistance is futile/dangerous).
This whole thing started because Crazy Princess started interfering in Shen's life and now Jiang Li has another incredibly powerful person taking an interest in her. She keeps trying not to get involved, because she knows Duke Su is unpredictable and literally everyone is afraid of him. Even with her new status, Su walks into her family's coming of age ceremony uninvited and everyone just deals with it and gives him one of the best seats. She has no idea why he's helping her or if he'll get bored of it and stop.
For all that both Jiang Li/Xue Fangfei and Shen have done on their own merit, they are both at the mercy of unpredictable puppet masters, for better or worse.
