Anyone know what was the Sympathy Award that she got? Is it a new category? The explanation was for those hard scenes that she had to go through shooting this drama. I think something like fan votes,.... and the prize was a pack of patches (LOL) and a golden throne in a form of a giant message chair....

I thought it was voted by 100 idols and it was for the most physical hardship a character had to endure. Correct me if I am wrong, maybe the english translation was incorrect.

Yes, to most everything you have written. (The truncated parts, too! :))

The highlighted section, though, has inspired me to question whether the drama defines love as happiness, or as something larger, itself. While happiness is certainly a component and indicator of love, MLSHR seems more focused on demonstrating a clear range of the mutative, transformative qualities of love through time.

We start with a modern, jaded, 21st century view of love, then turn to the innocent, first love of a teenage girl, and move on to:

Adulterous love (Soo and Wook), unrequited love (Myeong and Wook; Eun and Soo; Jung and Soo), love masked as duty (Wook and Myeong), sisterly/maternal love (Soo and Myeong and Soo and Oh Sanggoong), maternal love gone awry (Queen Yoo and So), paternal love (King Taejo and his sons, particularly Moo and So), filial love (the princes and their father; So, Yo, Jung, and Queen Yoo), brotherly love (the princes as a whole and Moo and So, So and Baek-ah, and So and Eun, in particular), forbidden love (King Taejo and Oh Sanggoong), forsaken love (Oh Sanggoong and King Taejo; Soo and So), platonic love (Soo and So; Soo and Eun; Soo and Baek-ah; Soo and Jung), carnal love (So and Soo), unrealized love (Eun and Soon-deok), love after breaches of trust (So and Soo), love against all odds (So and Soo), sacrificial love (Soo and So), possessive love (So and Soo), obsessive love (So and Soo), exhausted love (Soo and So), more maternal love (Soo and her daughter), and love across time (So and Soo).

At so many junctures in the drama, love is a catalyst for change, an actual active agent. It spurs characters forward, into new territory or decisions; then mutates into something else, not unlike the water that runs dry and reappears as clouds. In contrast to some dramas, love in MLSHR is not a passive or static entity, to be locked in a cabinet once it has been “attained.” Its causative and mutative nature cannot be contained and it moves like water – fluidly but relentlessly – through the characters’ lives, shaping them as a stream shapes river rocks.

Thus, we see the characters age and we see their understanding and expressions of love mature. The Hae Soo who fell for Wang Wook and threw Wang Eun a birthday party, at the beginning of the tale, is not at all the same woman who left her lover to give birth to a child she would not raise. Similar transformations have affected all of the characters. The intersections of life’s obstacles and their hearts’ yearnings have taken them to very different places than they were a decade or more earlier.

To return to your points, I concur that personal happiness is not the endgame for MLSHR. The final goal is not a pairing – because such a limited, mortal form would, again, attempt to lock in a box that which cannot be contained – but, instead, the creative energies that result when love spurs people to attempt to mold their surroundings. When Gwangjong looks at the palace and cites the futility of his life’s work, he is filled with regret, but his love for Hae Soo is palpably strong, as is his desire to use their love to bend time. The difference for us, as viewers, may lie in associating the “love” in this drama with a propelling energy, rather than equating it with “happiness,” because those moments in the show are, indeed, fleeting.

You left out Chae-rung's love for Wang-won which was a major catalyst for the disasters that followed, and a betrayal of her sisterly love for Soo.

The sudden and, frankly, bizarre combination of the genre and fantasy categories - when they had been split for every other award category - is I, believe, one source of the disappointment with the final selections. Perhaps SBS felt that it compensated for the combined categories by naming two winners, but it created a highly-competitive and small field, such that at least one person was bound to be burned. In this case, Lee Joon-gi took the hit.

I think a more natural split in categories would be modern vs sageuk. Anyway, I hope Joon Gi will be happy with the awards he did win and let us, his fans, feel bad on his behalf about the acting awards that he should have won but didn't.

I don't understand why Jang Geun Suk won Top Excellence in Daebak. Why is Daebak a full length drama and not Moon Lovers, and to be honest I like JGS but he wasn't good in Daebak, maybe another political award because it is his comeback drama?

Usually, the actor / actress already know who will be the winner 1 day before, and what i see LJG also didn't surprise when he didn't get the top excellence, he already 15 years in this industry i think he already know how the award work, maybe if SH have 15-16% rating the things will change LOL

I am not sure about them knowing ahead of time because some of those winners looked really really surprised, Kang Ha Neul included.

well SBS had to ruin it and confirm my worst fears. They actually awarded top excellence actor to LMH over LJG...now I said it earlier face palm, face palm, face palm.I will face palm until my face becomes flatter than a pancake.I can not argue against the daesang and I would not be so mad if the top excellent actor went to maybe only kim rae won not that he was better than lee joon gi but I wouldnt be so mad like I am now.Anyway my oppa Joon Gi is going places far beyond Korea so he really isnt really losing out on anything.Itis just sad when your home country doesnt acknowledge your talent. And anyway scarlet took 6 awards and lobts only four.I am still happy for my dear moonlover team cast and they had fun and looked beautiful.

I used to be a fan of LMH, Faith and City Hunter are some of my favourites, BUT, LJG's acting is way superior, even my sister who is not a Joon Gi fan was surprised that he did not get an acting award for Wang So.  I think SBS wants to keep LMH happy so that he will choose SBS projects in the future since he is now doing dramas again after 2 years.

But well i think MLSH have done their best tonight, not too dissappointed too,

i think Hallyu award only have one winner ( not sharing )  and announce before daesang LOL

maybe for top excellence they look for the rating too, Doctor and LOBS have same rating 20% beside JG already get so many top excellence award ahahahahha

and beside when JG got Hallyu wave and best couple, i feel like Fans effort tp vote everyday finally pay off

Well, I hope he is happy with his awards which were voted by his fans. We will never disappoint him unlike SBS, seriously, no acting award for Wang So ??? LOBS isn't even finished screening. When HSK walked in really late I had an idea that he would get the daesang because someone must have called him to get him there so late, but I had hoped LJG would get the top excellence award at least.

    ...I need a hug *siiiiigh*

At least we got best couple!! Manse!! How many awards is that total? 6? 7 if you count the sympathy award? Still better than expected if you went by ratings alone!

It's been real, and it's been fun, but it's bedtime now! Happy new year Eclipses!!! :)

I really think the sympathy award should have included Wang So. His character was put through a lot since childhood :w00t:, the scar, bound to the roof and shot at, the wolves, the poison, the save Soo from arrows and get a festering wound, the pelting he got from the citizens in the rain ritual, not to mention all the emotional stress he got from mother dearest !

At least Moon Lovers got recognized by SBS with more awards than we expected, and there is still the Baeksang Arts Award in May which I hope he will win the daesang or at least be nominated.

Lost to senior actor for Daesang is ok but losing Top Excellence to the two actors whose performance is sub-par compared to his is unacceptable. I was hoping that he was up for something bigger when he lost to KRW and LMH. It turned out they feel that it is sufficient that he won the Hallyu Star Award when his acting is far superior.

Yeah I am disappointed that he didn't win an acting award for his portrayal of Wang So. I felt the top excellence to KRW and LMH was a political choice, otherwise why give it to both of them. The competition was tough but LJG's acting was the best.

Kang Ha Na is the young actress who gave the best performance in MLSHR. How could they passed her over an idol. No offense, but Seohyun still has a long way to go. I think even Z.Hera deserving the award more.

I think she wasn't nearly as good as Z Hera or Kang Hanna. I don't understand why she won it  smacks a bit of politics here.

    @hiluna and @40somethingahjumma

I completely agree about Tarantino. He is not my cup of tea.  I also wished there was more martial arts in MLSHR as I enjoyed watching LGJ and even Z.Hera do their maneuvers.  I do wonder if LGJ liked that Monk killing scene and if that was a big draw for him to do this drama. I noticed in his IG videos that he dressed up as a Kingsman once and it made me wonder if he admired that movie and desired to play a similar role (Ala Colin Firth).  That movie also has over the top action/killing scenes.  That said, I do remember LGJ said in an interview that he might not be able to do action movies for much longer.

So back to MLSHR.  Looking forward to SBS!

Can I wish for pretty poses on the red carpet?  Smiles and hugs?  Daesang, best couple and KWAVE recognition? OST performances? An announcement from SBS that they will release special episodes? Or that they will start Season 2 in the next month?

When he accepted the role there was an interview and he said that it would not be an action role, so I was pleasantly surprised when he showed some action at the beginning episodes.  I guess he was comparing it to Joseon Gunman which had lots of action. I saw that Kingsman impersonation of his and yes, he looks like he is enjoying it so I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to play a James Bond type of role. I think it would be fun for him if played with a bit of light humour and not too dark and serious. Maybe a remake of True Lies (Schwazeneger and Jamie Lee Curtis), I loved that movie.

I am anxiously awaiting news of the awards so please post here vids and news pretty please. :)

Haha yes, I love to watch that on repeat as well.

Have you seen the Kill Bill movie scene called The Bride vs. Crazy 88?  It is an over-the-top scene where 1 protagonist kills 88 attackers with a similar sword  (do NOT watch unless you can handle lots of blood, "humor" in dismemberment, massive carnage, over the top acting, etc).  My guy loves that scene and I believe he was "dissing/not impressed with" the Wang So scene just to be funny and annoying to me.

Kill Bill is not my cup of tea, too much violence but I did see that scene which turned me off that show. That scene was too fake and done by stunt person compared with the monk scene done by LJG himself.  The monk scene was much more tastefully and elegantly done.

I thought I saw some clips of Jealousy Incarnate.  May have to check that out!  I don't know if it is the LGJ effect, but I tend to drift towards the Saguek dramas.

And way to spread the MLSHR love!  I keep checking to see when it might be on Netflix.

I showed the Monk Killing scene to my Wang So, believing he would love it as he loves Kill Bill/Quentin Tarantino.  His response?  "Not possible, no one can keep up that cardio.  And he is too pretty."  :anguished: But then again, my Wang So is snarky to the extreme and doesn't understand watching Kdramas, even though he is a Netflix addict.

You should show your Wang So the bts for that monk scene. LJG certainly had a good cardio workout with that scene :) I found it so funny when a cameraman founding him lying there with the dead monks after shooting that scene.

Murasakimi reason: Stubborn refusal to give viewers some sort of payoff at the end...

My POV, the director and the writer are actually brave. They did the right thing. Meeting of the OTP in the modern time could ruin this epic drama. It could just be like some of the kdramas with really bad and anti climatic ending.

Well, I I have read similar comments even in MLSHR thread,  not necessarily the title but the substance of what she wrote.

In addition, If she's disappointed that the producers won't release the drama in DVD or Bluray then, I agree with her. Seriously, I only want the SBS version and those already released behind the scenes.

You are right, there have been many comments in this thread of disappointments so take what DB says with a grain of salt. I think there was too much hype before the drama screened so everyone expected it to be perfect. The article isn't wrong about the drama not living up to its potential because it could have been so much more. It was just a few jarring details that sent a red signal that something was not right, otherwise the mistakes may have gone unnoticed like in other dramas. It was still a very good drama and mostly well produced.  I tried to re-edit the whole drama for my own personal viewing and found a new appreciation of all the work that went into making it. I tried so hard to cut scenes but they are all so precious then I end up just watching instead of editing and crying my heart out . I am giving up on my project until I get over MLSHR a bit more. I do like the ending as it was and the tragedy is that she will have to live the rest of her life without him like he did without her.

What do you expect from MBC? Both dramas are with them. Even their Daesang is decided by public votes. Apparently, it's been the 3rd year since they started doing that.

So I have high hopes as MLSHR is with SBS just like Iljimae.  If rating was the basis for award,  LJG should have won the Daesang for  Iljimae, a drama rated as high as 32% but it went to Moon Guen Young in Painter of the Wind, a drama that only rated as high as 15% and even rated 10% or less in some epi. Did MGY really perform better than LJG? Maybe? But I thought they consider the number of years in Television. MGY was a child actress so she's been to many as compared to LJG who's drama Iljimae was just his 3rd drama.

If we talked about TV rating of MLSHR, objectively speaking, it has actually rated decently considering TV viewership as whole has considerably lost its big chuck of its share to online streaming. MLSHR has been rating 1st-3rd on CPI. Actually mostly 1st, even surpassing the ever popular Infinite challenge on 10 out 20 Episodes.

I know many would agree with me, LJGs portrayal of Wang So was on another level. Seriously, I am curious if he could top that performance. I am sure he can if we only consider his ability to perform but can he find another character as rich, interesting and as challenging as Wang So again. Maybe he can but it may take a while. It took him 10 years to find Wang So.

It is going to be tough finding a better fit than Wang So for him. Most of the modern dramas have heroes who aren't very complex. TBDAW was good for him because of the dual personality and playing a father in Two Weeks was new for him. I keep watching dramas now and can't help thinking if this role or that role would have been good for him  I don't mind him in another Goryeon period sageuk but maybe it is too soon after MLSHR.

I hope there will be good news for our MLSHR cast this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed for them.

That is not the SBS website. And since LJG has confirmed his attendance, I have even higher hopes. I am expecting he'll take home Daesang & Top Excellence, non-negotiable. :)

The website looks like an Australian website. I've checked the nominees, looks like the selection are for dramas broadcasted  from Oct-Sep. MLSHR maybe included in next year's selection.

OH! Thanks, I just saw the SBS logo and thought it was official. :sweatingbullets:

I am 100% sure he's on the nominees for acting category. Top Excellence, no less.

Based on LJG performance as Wang So, it's a masterpiece, he'll take home the Daesang & Top Excellence. Non-negotiable. :):) If he were just a newbie I would only settle with Top Excellence. But since he is a veteran, he so deserves the Daesang.

    He debuted in 2001, so

    2001-2004 as struggling actor

    2005-present as top actor

I think 15 or 16 years in the industry can be called a veteran.

I don't dispute the fact that he is a veteran actor and deserves the Daesang. I have been a fan of his for awhile and I have watched all his shows since Iljimae. I had expected him to win for Two Weeks, then for SWWTN because he upped his level of acting there so now I don't want to be disappointed because he was phenomenal as Wang So and really really deserves the Daesang, Here's hoping you are right! Cheers!

Seems like not many big stars name in attendance. And it's weird that there is none from LOTBS Team? Idk how I feel about this exactly. I do hope LJG will win Daesang but with the absence of possible contenders (KRW, JJH and HSK), it just makes the category less epic because we do know SBS will only reward those from the pool of attendees especially for the biggest prize. Triumph over fierce battle actually feels more epic and glorious and I was hoping for that for LJG. Anyway, can I dream that LJG to be paired up with PSH to present award for at least one category? I very much would like to see those two as a pair, even only on stage as presenters. They were after all, almost an OTP should she did not turned down Joseon Gunman.

They should really only award finished dramas.  It really doesn't make sense to include unfinished ones which may go up or down in quality, don't see how they can judge an unfinished product. It is like announcing that the winners are already pre-chosen for the year. My Soompi friends, please do not get your hopes and expectations up, I still do not see a list with Lee Joon Gi nominated for any acting awards. It is enough that we cry so much watching the drama, no need to cry about awards as wells. What will be will be ! Let us just enjoy watching them together again on the red carpet.

I complete disagree in those dramablogs.  Objectively speaking, the main plot of this drama was actually really about Wang So from being the abandoned prince to becoming the King of Goryeo. The romance part of the OTP was just really a subplot. I think many viewers have mistaken it as romance drama. Rather than the romance, it tackles on relationships of characters that has an impact on Wang So.

Re: Moon Lovers is made as if it like an extended movie. I think eventually they are moving into this style of drama-making. After Moon Lovers, I really find other drama's to be really slow.

    Anyway, to each his own.

I agree with you. The drama seems to want to have something for everyone but the way I see it, the main plot is really how the 4th prince overcomes his terrible childhood to become one of the strongest emperors in Goryeo. I tend to divide the pacing of the drama into Ep. 1-4, the introduction of Wang So and even though he didn't seem to have much screen time, the other characters were always talking about him so that is okay. Ep. 5-10 was dragged out with the Soo-Wook romance which could have been shortened or replaced by more political content. Ep. 11-14 the deaths begin and Hae Soo's character becomes very ambivalent and frustrating. Ep. 15-20 finally seeing the OTP happen but not enough time together and his ascension and actions as an emperor were too downplayed.  I think this drama started off as an adaptation of the novel but it was really fighting to go a different direction once the main characters began to develop differently from the novel. I still prefer it to the original C-version which didn't move me much but to be honest I can't remember watching the whole C-version, more likely just skipped through it years ago. Oops! I got carried away and this really belongs in the moon lovers thread. Sorry folks!
