" House #13 and Mailbox #234  --- Why are they different?  I know Korea had a different system for naming houses & streets --- Why are THESE numbers (#13 & #234) different?"

    letters_from_home.jpg?w=500&h=333

The number 234 at the Mailbox is the land oriented lot number that has been used for the past 100 years

    New_Street_Name_Article_01.jpg

Sample of the new street address sign was introduce in 2011 & taken full effect in 2014 with "a house shaped" signage for home. Under the new system the sign shows the street name Hyoja-ro 7 gil & the large number 17 is the building/house number which is more simplified & consistent

Therefore the house shape blue signage which is marked 13 is the house number under the new system

MTS calls JR after his "death" for money

MTS had asked JR to place money at the Line 3 Bulgwang Station, Station Rental Lockers No. 15 & password is one of the children birth date

    3751045453_6ae209d472_o.jpg

Once a upon a time, you may have coin lockers, now lockers in Korea subway are electronic using a 6 digit password as a key

Just to note the location, Bulgwang Station is the domineering feature when you leave the station is Bukhansan Mountain & especially nearby to Suri Peak (수리봉)

Although I personally have never hike Bukhansan Mountain or will never take up hiking as a sport....but there are other interest

    food-alley-1.jpg

Immediately leaving Exit 1, there is the Bulgwang Food Market although it is better known by its Korean name "Meok Ja Gol Mok" (먹자골목, literally Let's eat Alley) Although it is aimed primarily at the large number of hikers on their way to or from Bukhansan Mountain, the street isn’t anything terribly special, just a large concentration of restaurants ranging from galbi (갈비, short ribs) to fermented skate (홍어, Hongeo, a must try in your korean bucket list, if you dare) to bindaetteok (빈대떡), with a healthy sprinkling of noraebangs, pool halls, & bars for some post-hike fun.  The majority of the patrons in the area were of course weekend hikers, decked out in their colorful backpacks, caps, and visors.

In Exit 7, you have the Jeil Market ( 제일시장 )

    MTS grievances with Chairman Choi

MTS: Chairman's shoes, each morning, I will shine those shoes to spit shine was my duty (job). Our Father will shine your cars, while I squat at the side to shine Chairman's shoes. When I do shine your shoes, I was really happy...do you know why...ptui!...ptui!...Ptui!,...it is because I could "spit" to my heart's content to polish

For those who still shine shoes & boots like I do, spit shine or bull polish refer to a method for polishing leather products in such a way to give an extreme high shine effect. It is commonly use in the military as a traditional method of presenting leather accessories & boots for inspection. The finished effect should leave the surface of the leather as reflective as a "mirror". Contrary to the name suggest  in "spit shine", no spit is require in my polishing of my shoes

Chairman Choi: Then who are you?

MTS: Just an ant....(gaemi, 개미)...An ant that is just beneath Chairman shoes...at any moment under Chairman's feet that is so easily able to be squash & strive in effort to survive, don't know for myself whether I will be able to survive being step on & don't know my own cause of death....our father...froze to death...do you still remember

    Chairman Choi: What?

MTS: He was begging to be pardoned, all night kneeling at front gate of Chairman house, begging forgiveness by submissive bowing his head onto the ground...on that day....it was so bitterly cold that even Hangang River had become frozen solid....it was such a day. Morning came as I came out to polished the shoes...I discover that my father was kneeling there, his position with his head still drop onto the ground...frozen to death. He was so frozen...that there was no way for us to comfortably lied him straight on the ground

Chairman Choi: Then what you are saying...the person who had pilfer the medical supplies...was indeed....your

MTS: yes....that household staff in actual fact...didn't do any of the act, but was push to be made a scapegoat & all blame fall upon to him...that foolish household staff

Chairman Choi: Therefore...it is because of your father that you married Ji Ri

MTS: Yes.....for the sake to snatch Cheon Nyeon Pharm from Chairman hands, as my own....scheme to plan to get close to her....I had to betray the woman oI had loved, as for Chairman daughter, I had never love her....never not once had I thought her as a woman.....She is so easily dupe.....in so many way than once....

    Chairman Choi: Get out!

Korean drinking culture. Drinks are usually accompanied by anju (little side dishes that will go well with drinks).....not just the simple peanuts & pretzel

Most Korean will able to pull out soju, beer, maekgolli out of the fridge, definitely for anju, the simplest form will be anchovies (myeolchi) & a container of gochujang (Korean chilli paste) as dipping

Soju, Dried Anchovies & gochujang, you can find them in every Korean household fridge without fail, as they are also use for cooking

Koreans believe that eating something spicy or salty, or both, helps absorb some of the alcohol. I am not sure if that is the case, but drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea

Twin sister YK & HK heart to heart talk

YK comes in bringing jug of water to the bedroom

For your information, Korean sleep on heated floor known as Ondol (underfloor heating) & the heated floor if you are sleeping directly onto of it with only some bedding, will sap you dry out of moisture & you will feel very thirsty in the night, hence the drinking water in the bedroom

YK: What is wrong with that expression of yours?...You have the looks as though you have just lost/misplace a winning Lotto ticket

    HK: Do I?

YK: Hmm....you do.....I had heard this mentioned before that this room was formerly Choi Jin Eon's study room.....who was almost my Hyeongbu ( 형부 )

Hyeongbu ( 형부 ) is the address for your elder sister's husband

HK: What is with calling him Choi Jin Eon?....Just because I call him Choi Jin Eon, that you must follow suit

YK: Then how am I suppose to address him....Hyeongbu?....Choi Jin Eon ssi?....Choi Jin Eon Nim?...Honestly speaking....he & I are born of the same year

In actual fact YK refer to JE by using Gae (개) in Korean means “a dog”, but when Gae (개) is used as a counter, it is used for counting things and objects, similar to the Chinese word 個, so YK is address JE as "the thing"

Dong Gap ( 동갑 ) means same age or born in the same year

    HK: What....with he?

YK: When is his birthday then?...I am in April....so that makes me his Noona, am I not correct?

    HK: That is so....

YK: Honestly speaking, he look so far older than I, even in compariosn with Seok yi (BS), he looks very much older, among the four of us, he looks the oldest the most....with such an old in appearance, we can consider him as an old man.....with regards to the matter in accepting his proposal...is that matter been accomplished?

    HK: Hmm

    YK: Why is that?

HK: Didn't you not allow me to go with a man who I had been with, not to return to him again, I felt what you had said was very true

YK: Therefore what you are meaning to say there....is that it is because it is my fault then

    HK: Hmm (Nods)

YK: Aigoo:...When was the time that you are so obedient in adhere to listen to what I say to you...therefore...if I was to say to you, to resume to live life with him, would you had return to live life with him again

    HK: Oh! (nods)

YK: What with you?...What is really your actual feelings right now, Eonni

HK: What my feelings are is already not any important...moreover there is a clear definition reality that it is not possible for us to be together

YK: Do you long for him?

    HK: Hmm (nods)

YK: Do you still love him like before?

    HK: Hmm (nods)

YK: But it is not possible to be together

    HK: Hmm (nods)

YK: It is not as though that he had died...that he is no longer around...why is there not possible.....it is sufficient that you are just 20 minutes drive away by car that you able to meet...why is there...just give him a call on your handphone, you will able to hear his voice...Eonni...why is there....why are you holding back...actually what is the reason to...for whom are you holding back for...if this is for the sake that it will bring benefits to you, then hold back...if this is for Hyeongbu (JE) sake then hold back, but however if the reason aren't...then there is no need for you to hold back...Eonni?.....With death...there is nothing else you will be able to do...when a person is gone...at that time...there is really nothing you will able to do

HK realise the fate of YK with Kim Seon Young

    HK: I am sorry

YK: There is nothing to be sorry...just be together...when there is a possibility to be together...then be together, Eonni....the both of you can just go & confront the matter together....resolve the matter together. When the person died (Kim Seon Young), I had no knowledge at all...the person who was having a hard time....also didn't know he was in such a precarious situation...it is possible that it is because of me that he had done so...but however, now I am having a hard time...at that time...at that time, if I knew...if at that time, I could have read him better, there is a possibility that I could have save him....please don't pass up a chance in Eonni's own happiness.....there is nothing more foolish than that....this is really...making me all tear up (cry).....within this 5 minutes, don't talk to me...I will not be holding back...& have a cry

HK comes to give solace embrace to her twin sister (YK) who is crying

"辭職書"  written on the envelope (resignation letter)

"What do you make of the fact that Hae gang wrote hanja instead of Hangul?   In All the dramas I've ever seen, can NEVER recall seeing it done like that.  I know the "Resignation Letter" when I see it ---Even though I've never heard what "Sa Jik Seo" means!"

I suppose writing "  "辭職書"  than "사직서"  look more elegance

Strange, I have seen in many dramas that the resignation letter, the least the envelope is written in hanja "辭職書"

Just to quote one recent drama...in the another SBS drama -  Remember - A Son's War Episode 10 around the timing of 15:12....In Ah tender her resignation letter as a prosecutor to Prosecutor Hong & she wrote or print  "辭職書" on her resignation letter, there is a scene in 16:01, where Prosecutor Hong picks up In Ah resignation letter & her envelope is written  "辭職書"

"If you'd care to tell me more ? ---I would love to hear in more detail.  If Yong Gi wrote one using hanja I wouldn't have been surprised (when she worked for CNP) -- But why would Hae Gang do it?"

Why wouldn't HK have the knowledge to write hanja, as I had already mentioned the subject before, that Korean do have some basic foundation in writing hanja (chinese characters)

"would folks know how to write only the hanja in their name or do korean kids learn some rudimentary chinese in school?"

Korea stop teaching Chinese in 1971, but it is offer as a separate language curriculum, as they do with English.

Most Korean will have some substantial knowledge of the Chinese vocabulary & will able to write hanja if require

If you have a Chinese vocabulary of 3,500 character into your knowledge, you can consider yourself a practical reader

1,000 frequent character, you can get by, a knowledge of 500 highly frequency character, you can read a Chinese children bedtime story

In Joseon  Cheonjamun (천자문 千字文, literally 1,000 word classic) was the primer & the standard text book for learning the Chinese character (hanja). Common people who are so busy cultivating the land, don't have time to eat or rest, let alone to study...brought about Sejong to invent hangeul for the common folks

" The very concept of "hanja" intimidates me no end.  I find myself thinking, "Where would I begin?  How would I get by?".......So I'm always  impressed

It took me 3 years with 3 times a week lessons of private tutoring to able for me to comprehend the Chinese written language

This is why the elite & ruling class of Joseon comprise of scholars & academics revered the Hanja because of the complexity of the hanja & protest to Sejong for invented the hangeul for the masses as they wish to control the illiterate citizens...giving a tool for them to be literate is dangerous

" just out of curiosity, so is it just the names that can have hanja influence and so can have different meanings?"

Korea throughout history have been subjugate to China, the Sino influence is very adamant in the Korean vocabulary or lexicon, it is because of the complexity of the Chinese written language to master therefore Sejong the Great decided to invent a simplified written language for its people based on the people who already have the vocabulary but no written language

"is korean like other languages where you can break down the word into roots/prefix/suffix etc

No, I don't think so, it is a written language based on phonetics

"or do you have to know the hanja root in order to guess the meaning/origin?...."

As for Chinese character (hanja), it is more derive from logogram & pictogram

    http://www.chineseonthego.com/write/pictogram.html

the Chinese character does have a Chinese radical or classifiers called Bushou ( 部首, literally Section Header )  in its component character, this is often a semantic indicator

For instance, in a Chinese dictionary, you had to look up the Chinese radical in order to look up a word & they are place according to the number of strokes in a character, there are 16 fundamental strokes (similar to letter of an alphabet) in the chinese character, where composition of different stroke makes a Chinese character with attachment of complex order & rules that need to be strictly abide

Character can range with just one stroke or a character word which consist of 57 strokes although there is an obsolete character that have 64 strokes

"does anyone know what "woo" means in korean? find it interesting that the writer has populated so many of the kids names with "woo". so there is WJ -- Woo Joo; found out MS kids are named Hyeok and Ji Woo. SIS son is named Kyung Woo. what is with all woo? does it signify anything?

Then you need to find out what is their Hanja (Chinese character) to the name "Woo" (우) to know the meaning. On its own Woo () is just a sounding word since hangeul was invented based on corresponding sounds on the shape of the mouth makes, therefore Hanja (Chinese character) is still used & Korean still write their name in Chinese characters

For example the meaning of words to the words "Woo" (우),

‎(Chinese character ) means the right side

     ‎(Chinese character ) means foolishness

    우 ‎(Chinese ) means superiority, excellence

    우 ‎(Chinese character 友) means Friend

우 ‎(Chinese character  ) is Sino Korean word for rain, although many will know the native Korean word for rain is "비"

HK & Chairman Choi exchange of words when Chairman Choi "destroy" the fountain pen that he gave to HK

With regards to HK being liable to be prosecuted over Mido pharm who had brought justiciability against HK

HK informs Chairman Choi, although she can't avoid being liable to be prosecuted, but she tell that she most probably will receive a suspended sentence, even if she was to serve time for her sentence, the least she will have a future after that to follow, while the crimes that Chairman Choi had committed will see him spending the rest of his life in jail, even a 10 years sentence will deem a lifetime for him considering his age

As for fountain pen, had a timeless elegance & great sentimentality.....I bought my first Waterman fountain pen on my first paycheck & until today, will sign important documents with the pen & an icon feature in my working bag

" toilet roll and detergent powder?  again, can I ask why? "

When Korea was an impoverished country, toilet rolls & detergent were pricey items that not every household could afford. Practicality wins over sentiments for housewarming gifts

In addition to that, the bubbles produced by detergent (seen as wealth bubbling like soap suds) & the length of the sheets of toilet paper represent prosperity. Some people will come bearing gift in the heyday were matches, nowadays scented candles to new homes that would light up good fortune & happiness, sometimes people will bring embers from their old home to continue the fire of prosperity in their new home as well

But nowadays, don't discount a nice bottle of wine as housewarming gift
