There is no denying that Ae Sin loves Eugene but this are trying times and war is brewing...It may look that way, that Ae Sin was going to use Eugene to pull the impossible mission but (from what I understood...personal Interpretation so I may be wrong) the day when Eugene's life was spared and accepted to be an instructor in the military academy...Ae Sin and Eugene are already comrades (secret ally)...the scene with Go Sang Hong and GDM is also a testament when the grandfather explains why Eugene has to be the one to kill Mori. Furthermore the scene in the bridge when Eugene told Mori that he just made up his mind and will kill him. So I think Ae Sin went to Eugene as a comrade seeking for aid...well Eugene's response is of personal and as a lover...I cannot blame him...their love story is really complicated blossomed in a world of chaos but I remember that Ae Sin mentioned that if love is just limited to one then no different love stories can be ever told. (something along those lines)

He refused the first time and wanted to leave the country (revenge - parents, fear that she didnt accept his origin and for her safety, when she cried a lot and gave him hope he stayed longer)

Eugene became an instructor to train her companions. He hoped that he would prolong the fall of the country for a few days and would like to gain in her eyes once again (love despite grandfather's objection).

After the fall of the Go family, she disappeared for two months (he heard only about the killed soldiers in the temple). When he started missing her and met her, they started arguing (I'm on Eugene's side) and after a moment of reflection she said that she would keep in touch and stole the music box. She gave him hope again that she cares about him.

She disappeared for half a year and didnt give a sign of life. She appeared with a request and a promise that she would go with him to the USA. She heard that he was leaving the country. She again gave him hope she cares about him despite his anger and doubt.

He saw no reason to kill Takashi Mori. Now he can try to fulfill his promise to her grandfather. On the preview we can see the colonel, his child and his wife (it is possible that he left for Japan and this is place where Eugene want kill him). He will want to destroy the wall that Lord Go set - a tragic character who wants to save the woman he loves and being happy/being with her.

The question is whether she wants to use him only as a companion or fulfill a promise to a man who loves her and repay him.

He spent two years in Joseon and many his actions was mainly for her.

Aeshin: There is another man in my heart. I will walk alongside him and won't marry anyone.

Aeshin: I have let another man into my heart. And I'm risking my everything for him. There is no going back and I have no regrets.

Aeshin:  This has nothing with him. I have trained to the point where i dont need a shield,  I dont intend to use him as one in any way (realy? he was quite often her shield - when she almost was japanese hostage - and in Japan it will be the same because she need him for safe trip)

Lord Go "What on earth do you whish to do with a man like this? Do you wish to die with him?" (old customs? noblewoman and former slave relationship? execution?)

Aeshin "I want both of us to live, Im trying to live"

    Lord Go "How preposterous"

Lord Go: You knew about his origin?

Aeshin: This is not his fault. Every step toward me must have been extremely difficult to take. I learned how far it must have felt when I decided to run to him. So please...

She angered Lord Go,  broke off engagement, risked her social status and now she has radically changed? The collapse of her family was a matter of time because of being anti-Japanese opposition. She killed Lee Van Ik and took her revenge for the death of her parents and the fall of her family. Now she was hiding (wanted criminal) and ran with gun for almost a year in the forest, which makes no sense and makes Eugene more hurt. She probably had some partisans missions at the time.

When I thought she was growing up and made herself more mature she took a few steps back now.

I hope that she will make the right choice - more mature choices and not childish before she met Eugene.

She will choose Eugene and give up the fight for great cause and falling country.

She could give up love and not get this stage. Now she must make a choice.

I remember back in my college days with my siblings one of my sister would go in the streets to rally and my mom would be so worried because they are abducting and torturing students and label them as one of the rebellious group in the mountains...Watching Ae Sin holding a gun, my sister's words back then keep ringing in my ears, "You don't understand what revolution means..." I think it's the exact same scenario in the case of Eugene...In one of Ae Sin's conversation with Hina after her hair was cut she placed her country first in the Hierarchy when she was telling the important things in her life thus the motto, "Country first before anything else..." justified and explains it well.

I have to give the writer and director a big round of applause...the drama not only conveyed the story telling in the dialogues but it was also translated visually...I place this drama personally as a contender with NiF franchise...

The heroes and heroines in this drama are often talking about sad ending BUT I am betting my two cents that there is always sunshine after the rain.

Historically South Korea and USA are very close allies...they even called it, "The relationship forged in blood..."  I think this line says it all for the upcoming and final episodes...

Aeshin cant lie and hurt Eugene all the time. I think she will go with him to fulfill her promise after what will happen in Japan (he'll probably save her again :/).

She has to pay off the debt and spend the rest of her life with him. If she does not understand it, she is an emotional vampire. She has heard several times that the country is falling down and cant do anything. Taking away a bank certificate from the country should be enough.

If it does not happen, writers could destroy her character. There is a border/limit between when you fight for the homeland (sacrifice) and the promise you make to the person you love (especially when you use this person, this love destroys him, I'm starting to wonder if she loves him the same way)

If Mrs Haman died it could be one of the reasons why Eugene would challenge Mori to a duel. She was like a mother to Aeshin and we could feel her concern for Eugene (she accepted him and treat well)

Of course, the Go family massacre also matters

it is political suicide and probably this will lead to the stop of the annexation (the document is on its way)

writers wanted to speed up but it will happen according to history - 1905

Aeshin and Eugene could become symbols of resistance and fight - they dont have to take part in the following years and can go to the USA (they can flee because of a political scandal - massacre japanese soldiers by RA and duel when Mori is killed, Aeshin loses her home anyway and is wanted, Eugene is an American)

Hopefully... I hope she's ok but have to prepare for the worst.

But I think she got shot (accidentally) by the bullet from the Japanese soldier that Lady Cho hit with her arrow. Everything so chaotic and happening so fast. But.. who knows.. your thoughts might be right. They didn't show her face after she fell.

Maybe barque - I really think shot was not deadly and japanese soldier missed essential parts of the body

The problem is that sometimes you see blood and sometimes there is no blood effect (japanese soldiers)

    so that's just my guess

  5. Eugene probably kill Takashi Mori in duel (Jemulpo Temple)

(the duel of officers is frequent in these times in many countries, they were often fought when they were offended or some honorable case)

Mori probably will want see result his actions and Eugene go with Kyle/american soldiers

Mori: "You have been making a stand where you shouldn't be"

Eugene: "Because I'm going to kill you"

preview after ep 18, both of them has not spoken these sentence yet

  6. @marfisa No offence, just my opinion.

    Mr. Sunshine is fictional series.

I know they are fictional heroes/characters and many events are made up but I have respect for sad/dark history and this series show this period.

Perhaps this is a form of accounting for the past or an attempt to evaluate it. Sometimes directors of movies and series choose difficult topics.

@charray  RE: Eugene tied up - Ooh! This is intriguing. Is that Lee Jeong Mun's side profile (in blue dress) in one of the pics? Did he order the arrest? The soldiers around Eugene - they're Joseon ones, right? The Japanese have a blue tinged uniform. But the red bands on their sleeves and caps are throwing me off and  making me think that they're Japanese soldiers.

Joseon soldiers (military uniform) and probably Lee Jeong Mun

    1. EC got into trouble with his actions

    2. Joseon wants to solve the problem with RA, they arrested RA members when they met?

Maybe the meeting and conversation EC-Lee Jeong Mun is a warning against something more dangerous (executions, pacification of partisans) and they be released or they only let go EC?

    Hi, @KDramaLogic

I'm not a native speaker, sometimes my thoughts are hard to read :) I even have an outline of the entire American-Japanese clash scene at the Go family residence and all conversations (EC/Japanese officer, EC/Aeshin, EC/Lord Go) because I think this will be place where many things happen and they resolve few problems and new ones will appear :)

I assume that Eugene and Aeshin will be actively involved in RA actions related to their troops. It seems to me that Lord Go will accept the relationship of Eugene and Aeshin. Dont forget that Aeshin is a woman and cant walk 20-30 miles with a few kilos of equipment like Eugene (the hunter is not a soldier and has not undergone specialized military training).
Her participation will be accepted only if she goes through a new training and leaves when things get complicated. Eugene can make mistakes in the command to save Aeshin. I think he will be aware of this and will force her to leave if he says so. I think that she will agree because he will threaten her that he will leave and she will never see him again.

Now I will write a few scenarios and I am curious how you refer to the topic. I'm a bit expanding thoughts or ideas from previous post.

    1. I wrote that HS's father will be murdered, his property confiscated and his wife will be thrown out onto the street.

Let's change the script a bit. HS's father accidentaly hear about japanese troops "pacification action" in near future. He objects that he will not allow it but they threaten him that he will be killed, his property confiscated and his wife thrown out onto the street. Even though he knows about it, he decides to remain silent fearing the fate of the family.

Maybe he will decide to reveal the plan but it will be too late... The japanese troops set off faster to the destination "Mountain".

    What would you do?

    2. Eugene and Aeshin set off to the planned action with thirty companions. When they return to the base they can see the bodies of their dead companions and destroyed base. A group of Japanese soldiers (similar in number) stayed to look for valuable things. Thanks to experience, Eugene knows that the traces of the fight are fresh. There may be a much larger enemy unit nearby - several hundred. If they get into a fight, he can die, Aeshin and the rest of the survivors. He is responsible for their lives and will probably wait until they leave (looking for more survivors?) or withdraw. The rest will probably want to get revenge, but he will not allow it and japanese soldiers leaving base.

    What would you do?

    3. HS's father feels guilty of a massacre and he meets Eugene revealing the truth. I assume they will come to an agreement. HS's father will stay in Korea, work with Japanese (collaboration - milder version, he will try avoid a deeper participation in cooperation) and take care of Go family property, servants, aunt after Lord Go death because he is very old person (EC and AS go to USA). Of course, he will also save his property and family.

Maybe he'll try to save more people too in secret. HS stay, forgive father (maybe marry Hina? I have no idea at the moment what do with her, Lee Van Ik reminds the real person who signed the annexation of Joseon/Korea) and may save his newspaper after 1907 (engaged or married Hina). He will publish a censored newspaper, but also an underground newspaper about Japanese crimes. After the death of his father, the young master takes care of both properties. Maybe Aeshin will return with children in 1945 or her descendants?

    What would you do?

    Edit:

These fictional scenarios are similar to real characters and decisions taken, for example, in XXX (country). I wrote them based on knowledge about what was happen in XXX - based on real characters and events.

This post is more to reflection and to see a wider picture for soompi users.

THIS! I have to use your words, since you so perfectly put it. AS' character indeed took a very weird turn. I can't see her ambitions of free and independent Korea and it's very mind-boggling, since she was pretty much the only main character who went against every expectation and took parts in some controversial operations, but suddenly AS in the latest episodes stops being the patriot and her feelings for the homeland is nowhere to be seen. I really can't figure out what the writer is trying to establish with AS' character. A noblewoman going around dressed in man's outfit fighting with a gun against everyone who disrespects her country is now nothing more than a woman in love who daydreams about living in the US with her lover... Okay, there's nothing wrong with her being in love but AS' path is more of a downgrading rather than a development and it's very disappointing to see a woman so strong who was ready to sacrifice all of her interests for the sake of the country now talking about wanting to give her heart to a man who doesn't even know where his loyalty lies...

    Hi,

Thoughts - i dont need answer, just read this my dear :)

The Mountain - future base Righteous army

Have you ever wondered how long it will last? Maybe the emperor try take away his lands after some time (Eugene)? Maybe he will betray them and send an army that will murder everyone or most of them? ( I have a feeling HS father oppose it and will be murdered as high rank joseon officer, Choi properties confiscated and HS mother maybe thrown out onto the street :/)

I doubt that Japan will get his hands dirty and force the emperor to solve the problem with RA. Maybe Japanese troops will attack the Mountain and the emperor will be powerless or say them where they hiding? I have the impression that under pressure he does strange things (forged letter and murdered missionary). He is a very weak emperor or he born in bad period and lost because he had very strong enemies in region. Japan won wars with China, Russia and they had alliance with the USA or very good political relationship.

Some of the rebels who survive may leave the country or give up further fighting (Eugene, Aeshin, HS, Hina?). Why? Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905, Following the Protectorate Treaty of 1905 between Korea and Japan, which stripped Korea of its rights as an independent nation, the presence of American soldiers will lose their sense and deployed troops will be taken away (Eugene, Kyle). Korea was obliged to become a Japanese protectorate by the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905 and the "reforms" were enacted, including the reduction of the Korean Army from 20,000 to 1,000 men by disbanding all garrisons in the provinces, retaining only a single garrison in the precincts of Seoul. On 6 January 1905, Horace Allen, head of the American Legation in Seoul reported to his Secretary of State, John Hay, that the Korean government had been advised by the Japanese government "that hereafter the police matters of Seoul will be controlled by the Japanese gendarmerie" and "that a Japanese police inspector will be placed in each prefecture". A large number of Koreans organized themselves in education and reform movements, but Japanese dominance in Korea had become a reality.

I came up with a brutal scenario?

This can be reason why they lose hope (betrayal and lack of support) and decide live and be happy. Most of the people they knew would die, run away from the country and maybe few hide in the woods and resist like hunter Hong.

RA in 1905 consisted of many separate units commanded by independent commanders. I do not remember exactly but it was in 1908 that they formed an alliance. Previously, they had acted separately and probably didnt work together because the commanders were people from high classes and low classes or they had different opinions.

The English school will be liquidated and most of these girls will die according to my thoughts, many RA members and people like French Baker, former slave hunters, scholars - they are secondary protagonists but their death does not matter? The main characters dont have to die but the price they pay will be huge because lose almost everything what they loved or was precious. I think this series is about survival and being happy after horrible experiences. The series goes in the direction where the main characters have a chance to survive and go in different directions (China, America, Europe, Japan).

This is just my opinion and we dont have to argue and write essays.

Downgrading? The RA 's cause is not to fight for the country, but lapdog of the King, doing dirty work for them. AS is now freed from being just a YES man, she's capable of realizing the diverging path of RA not adhered to what she believes in. Eugene helped her realizes that what she has been fighting for, would not allow the slaves to live prosperously in Joseon, only aristocrat can thrive. AeShin is now freed from the chain that bind her down in following orders, she can now differentiate which order would benefit Joseon.

Her romance with Eugene freed her from the cage of Aristocrat, she is determined to save Joseon, a place where all the people can live happily. She is now totally freed from discriminating against the lower class people, as proven by her deep love in Eugene. Her willingness to defend her love of lower class origin, by agreeing to her grandpa and live the rest of her life alone. Her grandpa wanted her to get married through which she can be shielded from danger and she refused stating that she has trained to the point of capable in protecting herself. When her grandpa ask for Eugene, knowing Eugene will get hurt by his slave origin, she promptly reject the idea, and try to shoulder all of the blame on herself. Name me the last female character in kdrama that feature similar inner strength?

If you read the history of Joseon, there's pretty much nothing can be done to save it at this point in time. Unless the writer willing to twist the history. Also, if you watch EP 16, the rewind of their beach data, AeShin mentioned about heading to Shanghai to meet his father's comrade, and continue to fight for Joseon eventhough she's far away from home. FYI, after Japan annexed Joseon, there's a temporary Joseon government set up in Shanghai to continue the fight against the Japanese.

The RA at this point in time, did not fought for REVOLUTION, rather they just fight to maintain status quo. There's hardly any value of patrotism in it.

If any character lack development, it's Dong Mae.

Yes, thank you for this post. I agree :)

Aeshin, Eugene and a few other characters are just a few interesting people in this period and are unable to stop Japanese domination in the region. The question is whether they will fight until the end and they will die buried in nameless graves or maybe they will fight until they realize that they have the right to live (after many terrifying experiences - war) and decide survive and they will choose different places (Japan, Joseon, America, China, Europe).

Some soompiers do not notice that someone may want to live :)

  11. @KDramaLogic peaceful opinion :)

Aeshin grow up (she changed very much from 1st episode, especially recently in connection with RA and her relationship with EC).

She will not change her rebellious character and certain habits so quickly and she needs more time. She already noticed that Eugene's decisions are thoughtful and calm and many other things but she fight for her man right now. Even DM works for her and I think Lord Go will discover and understand that she protects the family more than he does. Maybe even give her leadership because he getting old and not keeping up with the changes. Eugene become new leader RA when potter resign (many mistakes even though I like him in general). It is time for young people to defend their homeland and people they love.

  12. "Royal Investigation Bureau (Uigeumbu, 의금부, 義禁府) - It was an investigative and enforcement office under direct control of the king. It chiefly dealt with treason and other serious cases that concerned the king and served to arrest, investigate, imprison, and carry out sentences against the suspected offenders, who were often government officials."

    I change my thoughts.

HS father (he dont look like soldier :)) is only commander of the army garrison (looks like old Joseon military uniform but i cant find rank) in Hanseong or can be part Royal Investigation Bureau? :)

  13. @kansas424 Many of us have a different point of view.

We exchange knowledge and thoughts more. (sometimes borrowing heading?)  We try not to argue :)

We try to read between the words spoken by the characters (KES), the meaning of the scenes and we try to speculate what will happen next on the basis of the storyline and history.
Most of the main characters are gray - they have advantages and disadvantages, a sad past or they will have a sad future (few characters or all die?).
I myself try to understand the story told by writers. The series tries to tell us something and we have to draw conclusions after the last episode.

@inna75 thank you :) I forget about French Baker (small role) and he realy can be useful this time (Dong Mae).

DM rescued by RA makes sense.

RA has many spies and information about the danger can be transmitted in various ways.

    ???

DM will probably kill the assasins when they want to make sure he's dead. Maybe they accidentally say something about Go family before brutal death. He probably knows that the French baker belongs to RA.

    ???

HS father is probably the police commandant (preview). It seems to me that thanks to him, EC will be talking in the police office with grandfather. He trying to leave the past behind them by making this huge repayment? (HS father and mother also seem to be victims of this tragic day, grandfather was evil man )
Grandfather Go is a stubborn donkey and will probably raise his voice and will  argue.

Eugene will let them out of arrest because the granddaughter is worried.

  15. Theory Speculation

American soldiers and Japanese soldiers - clash.
It is just a theory but I think the third party could come - RA. They found out too late and will come when it will be over. The Go family leads them and pays them. It is their duty to protect them from danger. I think the potter will apologize to Eugene and maybe even could give him leadership.

  16. "If you want my silence, you have to either kill me or trust me"

At first I thought it was EC Allen conversation but I think this can be EC Grandfather conversation :)

EC is sitting on a chair and you can see the Joseon flag. I think he used his influence and this is a police office. He release grandfather and scholars from arrest. He raised AS and despite his opposition (EC AS relationship) she probably is worried.

  17.

this series is slowly beginning to annoy me :/

    Thoughts Preview...

AS didnt become a concubine :) She went to meet the Empress or Emperor (subject: english school). I leave AS Empress conversation...

    ???

If she went to see the emperor, he would realize she have puffy eyes and would probably ask why? (japanese spies murdered his beloved empress Min few years ago).

AS will tell the truth that she cant be with the man she loves because her grandfather is opposed to the relationship. The adviser knows that this is EC and he will say his name. The emperor will probably be curious how it happened that a noblewoman and a former slave are in a relationship. AS probably will tell that she saw in him what other people didnt and fell in love with him. The Emperor appointed him an instructor at the royal military academy.

The question is whether the emperor will show support "I appointed EC as an instructor and I thought about ties him more strongly with Joseon - marriage" Grandfather will be against it anyway (stubborn donkey :)), but it will show the Emperor's support. Either the advisor and the emperor will say that they cant force her grandfather and cant change the laws and will only show concern.

    ???

I think writers again try mislead viewers.

DM probably seriusly wounded warn EC in american legation - reason why he take soldiers and they go save Go family resisidence and be in time. You forget he works for Aeshin and EC saved his live. Where else would he learn about the danger?

Go family is anti-japanese and grandfather organized meeting.

Japanese soldiers will withdraw because they will not want to conflict with America. Joseon has not yet lost his independence and the Japanese interfere in their internal affairs.

EC want protect Aeshin and her house. EC already knows that he can only prolong the inevitable. (annexation)

EC protects grandfather and the anti-Japanese faction, but this is not his main goal. Grandfather will understand that he was wrong? I hope he will give Aeshin this time. (stubborn donkey)
I am fed up with this in the plot and the problem is being extended by writers (KES please end this here)

After this incident EC will get into trouble. Coming of Lee Van Ik (Minister of Foreign Affairs) and police commander (HS father?).

The first shoot was for a warning.

Probably they both threaten each other during the conversation in american legation.

"If you want my silence, you have to either kill me or trust me" - EC and minister Allen conversation? - too many incidents in which Eugene took part

    ???

I wonder what will happen in the city. Grandfather and scholars beaten by soldiers or police and imprisoned.

Maybe he couldnt intervene being still in Joseon?

    ???

This photo looks like a reminder (photo shot in american legation?). Maybe they will not survive fights with Japan?

many rebels take pictures of themselves.

  18. @rubie

thoughts preview - this is my opinion (many intentional misleadings and this is reason why we make mistakes :))

Grandpa will be against it (american soldier). AS will reveal that EC has avenged her parents and he did nothing in this matter (almost 30 years). Then grandpa will agree because EC avenged his son. Then he will allow EC and AS to go to the USA.

AS is too different from other women. After the broken engagement she become the object of gossip. She is also in a relationship with EC (american soldier). Grandpa will ask him to go to the US for her safety, she will not be able to stay in Joseon because of customs.

She will want to come back and defend her homeland and Grandpa/family (goodbye). EC will ask for transfer and will come back to Joseon. He said in last episode "I want Go Aeshin not die" - love and protection. He dont care Joseon ( he is sincere in this matter). I think that he will use "come here, Come here"  AS EC hug?

    Edit:

    my thougts:

HS proposal is misleading because AS tell him the name her man - Eugene Choi.  He just found out what his family has done to him. He will withdraw the marriage offer. He tell EC that AS has revealed the truth and has been punished. If writers go in this direction HS will behave like a real man.

Any ideas on who this Joon Young character will be? I have read speculation that he is son of Song Yeong ( the RA member in Shanghai, one of the four in the pic with Ae Shin's father). Another speculation is that he is the King's son but his name points at the first scenario being more plausible.  Thoughts?

Do we know for sure if this funeral BTS is from filming long done or is it part of the final filming that has been going on recently?

It's hard for me to answer this question, if certain scenes were made earlier and now they finish filming. They can throw old shot scenes or new ones. Intentional misleading and maintaining viewers' curiosity with this series.

As you can see it works. :)
