  1. Netflix Korea video with Song Joong ki, Director Kim Hee Won and SCreenwriter Park Jae Bum is out with English subtitles.  It's really interesting and fun.  I just wish it was longer! I would seriously listen to them do commentary about every single episode.

For those of you sad about SJK‘s interpretation of the ending, JYB has come to the rescue.

"Even if she can't be there all the time, I think she will go to there even only for a while. I don't think she will leave him alone." - Jeon Yeo Been (in courtesy of twitter)

Love how they’re both constantly channeling their characters even in real life. It’s such a Cha Young thing to say and do. So carefree and stubborn. She accepts him wholeheartedly and will go down to the fire pits of hell for her man. SJK’s like VC who has this overprotection over CY and in a way he’d rather lose her if it meant she will be out of danger’s way. I get this is what he means by she isn’t his shade but rather an agony because he loves her so much. He has such a longing for her but he doesn’t feel he deserves her that’s why he keeps pushing for them not meeting again. But JYB’s like “Nope she’s coming! She’s never leaving him alone.” I’m here for it.

Cutie with short hair. She always shines so bright! She’s such a CenCha Shipper.

I'm glad she gave us a more hopeful interpretation  of the ending!  I really enjoyed finally hearing from JYB about her role and the drama.  i love her describing the drama as a "miracle" and a "gift":please:

    Ah, Vincenzo!

Could someone share with me their theory on what happened to Inzaghi?  Was his disappearance ever explained or did I miss it?

SJK thought of him as a guardian angel for Vincenzo.  The screenwriter and director talk a bit about Inzaghi and what he represents in the new Netflix video I posted above but didn't say what happened to him in the end.

It's been a while since I've been on this thread. And I must say, since the show finished I suffered withdrawal. The chemistry between the cast is best I've seen (not exaggerating) from the bts etc you can see the cast adore each other. I was already a big fan of SJK and was bitter he didn't get more recognition for arthdal chronicles but at least Vincenzo has been a hit and rightly so.  I've become a solid fan of Jeo-been even if I liked her in be melodramatic, I'll definitely follow her further works. What a ride this show was though, how they balanced humour,  suspense and not to forget the hot chemistry even if there wasn't much skinship.

Right now I'm in a slump, suggestions are very welcome.

I think we are all struggling tbh. I'm still looking for a drama to compare:brokenheart:

Song Joong Ki Reveals Key Advice That Helped Him Film “Vincenzo” + What The Drama Made Him Realize

Thanks for posting!  It was a really, really good interview.  I appreciate the reporter doing his research about Ombre Mai Fu because it allowed for an even deeper analysis of Vincenzo's character from Song Joong Ki.  i really do love listening to his thoughts and experiences.  So interesting the Song Ban Jang nickname only came about later.  That part about how Vincenzo love for Cha Young is painful is so heartbreaking but it's beautiful too:heart: SJK really loves Cha Young and their relationship-maybe more than Vincenzo does haha!

Sorry for doubting you J-Wide. I'm so excited we are actually getting an interview and a beautiful new photoshoot:yaaa:JYB looks so hot in the new pictures but I will miss her gorgeous, thick shiny hair.  I suppose her new role called for shorter hair and considering the short gap between finishing Vincenzo which she worked on for so long and starting her next drama, it probably makes it easier to get into her new character if her look is very different.  SJK's new GQ photoshoot looks so gorgeous too:wub:

No need for a season 2 if we get sjk+jyb in another drama. Actually I’m not quite sure if season 2 will work because it’s hard for it not to be monotonous. I’m down for a Mr Mrs Smith spin-off so VCY would be a married couple but if not it’d be too similar to season 1. Instead give us a deep passionate romance with lots of kisses because they’re such great kissers lol.

Any idea which awards ceremony is next? Hoping more Vincenzo cast members get nominated because they deserve it. Also we’d get a small reunion.

I would love to see them act together again either in a season 2 or another drama/film:wub:  It's a pity it is rare for Korean couples to star together in the same drama more than once.  I understand your priorities about what the drama needs to feature lots of haha :kiss_wink:

Thanks for this video and the SJK video.  It's nice being able to understand when the accounts add English subtitles:D

Every time I watch this scene I can't believe originally it was only going to be one kiss.  They are soulmates who are in love, forced apart for a year, not sure when they will see each other again, finally admitted their feelings.  Thankfully, JYB and SJK knew best and added the second kiss :smooches2: From SJK's interviews he definitely wants them to have a happy ending.

Did her agency not allow her to give interviews? What's going on? Strike when the iron and publicity is hot!

It's very unusual decision for JYB's agency to decide no post-drama interviews.  This is what all agencies dream of for their up and coming actress: winning the lead role in one of the hottest and most popular dramas of the year and the subsequent publicity.

While going through my stash of stationary at home this weekend for a Mother’s Day card I came across one that was made by a friend many years ago. Beautifully drawn forget-me-nots and hand written besides these delicate blue flowers was this...the first verse from Longing by poet Matthew Arnold. It immediately reminded me of the way VC and HCY looked so longingly at each other at the end of Episode 20. It broke my heart and still haunts me.

Come to me in my dreams, and then

By day I shall be well again!

For so the night will more than pay

The hopeless longing of the day.

That is beautiful but makes me so sad.  I'm feeling more downbeat about the ending after watching the English sub of his SJK's live.  He mentioned he was playing it more cheerful like he will see CY again but the director wanted them to play it sadder like they likely won't see each other again:tears:

Hoping she’ll grace the cover of a magazine and give us the in depth interview then. It’s totally possible!

So happy for the opportunities Vincenzo has given the cast. They deserve all the success in the world.

Agreed, I feel robbed of the BTS especially of CenCha moments. Each time they show the two, they always cut it short. The most generous they were was the bts of episode 20. That’s why I want to buy the dvd but I’m afraid they’d be the same and rob me again so we will see. I want a long directors cut version of the kisses and bts lol. Otherwise it wouldn’t be worth the purchase. Though there’s the commentary which will be fun too.

I'm hoping for at least a magazine interview now as it looks like she didn't do the usual round of post-drama interviews:persevere:  I'm really enjoying the interviews from the rest of the cast though.

I'm not sure why they cut their BTS scenes together because I'm sure there were a lot and usually dramas play up the couple BTS chemistry.  The BTS were so short at first too although the got longer as the drama progressed.

This thread on Twitter compiles the deleted scenes that we know about but I'm sure there are tons more:

Thank you@raziela!  The channel that posted the livestream took the video down due to some audio problem during  the chat and will reposted soon once it's fixed.  Don't worry, SJK is taking a break until July so hopefully he'll recover by then.  I'm happy to hear that him and the cast are hoping for 2nd season (and possible 3rd season) to be announce and a chance to travel to Italy for real.   I feel unlike most K dramas productions I've seen,  both the crew and cast really look after each other both mentally and physically.

Vincenzo really changed his life and now he is hoping to play an even darker tone.

Poor Sungcheol panicked like the rest of us when there was no preview of 17 after the 16th episode week

I wondered why they took it down. Thanks for explaining.  I thought this month he was going to resume filming his movie that was paused because of the pandemic?  I don't know if I can deal with a darker drama.  I hope it has a hopeful ending:tears:

What does everyone think about Mr Nam making paper planes at the end?  Was that supposed to be symbolic of something?  I don't think Park Jae Bum added that for no reason.

I noticed Cha Young calls Inzaghi by his name when she and Vincenzo are conversing like it's totally normal.  I would have loved a scene where Vincenzo tells Cha Young he is friends with a stray pigeon he had named Inzaghi and her response:D

Exactly! Even the Geumga Plaza Residents got mini interviews. It’s upsetting, really. I wonder if it’s because she recently did interviews regarding night in paradise where she briefly touched on portraying HCY that’s why they feel no need to interview her again. Honestly I’d love to hear more from her. Her take on some of the questions sjk was asked such as her most memorable scene, chemistry with the cast and crew, and more! She was robbed and so were we. Not fair! Hopefully she’s just late in her interviews? Also want to see a pictorial of her.

Anybody planning to purchase the dvd? I’m thinking about it. :D

*Sigh* Maybe she and her agency have just decided not to do any:confounded: On the plus side at least a new endorsement was announced for JYB today:w00t:  SJK had two announced recently and KDY had one announced too.  Happy for them all. SJK live youtube chat details.  It seems he cut his hair a bit after the wrapped up.

Thanks for posting! It was so fun and nice to get a bit more Vincenzo now we have to face our first weekend without it:tears: So now both Joong Ki and Yeo Been have told us they took pictures of each other but they never gave us a single picture together:relieved:

Kim Sungcheol /Min Seong was a great guest.  You can tell him and SJK are good friends.  I was laughing so much him teaching the "correct" way to say Tae Hoooo~

More tidbits from the fan meeting Q&A (credit for translation @ritika on Twitter):

    - SJK's thoughts on Inzaghi:innocent:

    q: what happened to inzaghi?

a: i think inzaghi came all the way from italy when vincenzo came to korea. you can see a bird fly by in the first ep. it’s a fantasy element of course. but he’s kind of like a guardian angel for vincenzo

    - SJK prefers iced sewage waste to espresso:P

q: do you drink espresso in real life?

a: i drank it once but it was too bitter so i never drank it again. while filming i drank an americano

    - Agent An

jaejae said she loved ahn giseok and joongki said “im chulsoo was the first actor to be casted for vincenzo... ppl gave him a lot of love in cloy... it’s very hard to act the way he does bc he has to act cute but also he’s so obsessed with vincenzo”

    - Even SJK isn't sure if the tenants know about the gold:lol:

q: so, do the tenants know about the gold??

a: i’m confused about that too. like do they know? do they not? i’ll ask the actors later in our group chat we have. i personally have no idea if they know or not. or maybe they know? yeah i think they must know

    - Vincenzo vs. DOTS:o

q: who would win if yoo si jin and vincenzo fought

a: sijin is our country’s best soldier. vincenzo is a mafia. i think vincenzo would win bc yoo sijin stays within the law while vincenzo doesn’t care.

    - Joong Ki suggested Kim Sungcheol for the Min Seong character

joongki asked sungcheol to cameo in vincenzo and he was like “oh ok, sure!” but once he got the script he thought “omg this would be fun, but i don’t wanna do it”

sungcheol said “minseong is so bad but he loves vincenzo so much”

    - Cha Young is always his number one:wub:

    q: chayoung or minseong

a: of course chayoung. i don’t even have to think about it

    - About the photo book

q: i want the vincenzo photo book!

a: it was a staff photobook. ppl mistakenly thought i made it, but our actors all gathered in the waiting room and park seokdo said he did it before and we should do it. without the staff knowing we all made it together and gave it to them
    ritika
he said it’s not available to give out bc it’s the memories btwn the vincenzo actors and the staff

Joong ki's three favourite moments from Vincenzo:

1st: montage after Mr. Hong's death in Episode 4 Choi Myunghee dances over classic music after killing someone. It made him angry but he loved her expression so much.

2nd: when the tenants are waiting for Vincenzo to comfort him after his mother's death "I got goosebumps while filming, watching it, and even now. Vincenzo begins thinking, 'am I qualified to lead these people?'"

3rd: Ending of episode 20 where Vincenzo walks away after kissing Hong Chayoung and stares at the camera

"I think it’s a scene that wrapped up our show very well."

Anyone know if there’s a chance our Yeo Been will attend Baeksang though not nominated? Dying for a chance to see our OTP reunite because this withdrawal is heavily weighing on me. I’m not familiar with Baeksang so not sure if only nominees attend or? Though with covid precautions they might try to keep the attendees at minimum but how awesome would it be? Bonus, our eyes would be blessed with gorgeous JYB in a gown. Also I forget if there’s such thing as a best couple award? Please enlighten me.

Btw SJK has an online fan meet tomorrow and it was announced he’ll be bringing on a special surprise guest. I’m manifesting it to be JYB (would be fitting since it’s a fan meet following Vincenzo) though chances are slim. The only female counterpart he has ever invited to his fan meet was his now ex wife so he’d probably steer clear of that but I just want to put it out into the universe anyway. Also because JYB deserves so much more recognition than she has received for Vincenzo. Tell me why she didn’t get any press coverage after the airing of the drama? I wanted to hear her take on some of the things regarding the drama too. SJK was sweet to give her a lot of credit in his interviews but I wished we got to hear from her too.

Non-nominated guests do attend Baeksang but I don't know about Baeksang this year.  I would think the guestlist would be restricted because of Covid. No, they don't have a Couple award at Baeksang.

I am so sad how she is nowhere to be seen after the drama.  I was looking forward to her thoughts on the drama. Her interviews are always delightful because she is so articulate, intelligent and warm.  She is the lead in one of the most popular dramas in the last year and highest rated cable dramas ever but no interviews, no photoshoots...nothing.  I don't understand it.  I miss her:criesariver:

IKR. It goes to prove how professional actors are. When the director shout action they become their character and in that world.

I could feel the tight bond and friendship the cast and crew developed over the months, applaud to the casting director to find such amazing talents. Most of them want a second season, including KDY even if he had to be a ghost next to Vincenzo. LOL!

I hope SJK and Heewon PD won at Baeksang, I hope JYB will be there too as announcer. And I hope Vincenzo will get a lot of nominations in other awards shows. They deserve it.

Oh, Life after Vincenzo, what should I try to watch next?

Yes!  It's amazing to see the contrast.  Although as cute and funny as the behind the scenes I have to admit I can see why the scene was kind of messy onscreen because they were literally working out how it was going to work as they shot it. I remember I mentioned after episode 19 the blocking and timing of the scene could have been improved but now I can see they didn't really have time.

The competition is tight but I really hope they can win.  I think if nominations had come out a bit later after Vincenzo had completed it would have received even more nominations.

It's really hard to move on :criesariver:

Kwak Dong Yeon had some great adlibs too: Han Seo calling his brother scum in the final episode; Han Seo being all giddy at the ice rink after Vincenzo left; The "grandma" adlib when Vincenzo shot him:lol: The second account thread in the spoiler bar has a lot of highlights from KDY's interview where he talks about the adlibs.

    Last BTS hiiiks....

I'm not a shipper of actors, but dang these two are so sweet to each other.. :kiss_wink:

I didn't know that SJK is such a warm and affectionate person, no wonder the cast, staff and crew seem to adore and respect him not because he's a Hallyu star. I was not a fan before but, I do now.

Thank you for posting. The contrast between the amount of fun, chaos and laughing when they were filming the CY hostage/HS death scene compared to the violent, dramatic showdown onscreen:lol:  It is such a bittersweet feeling to watch:criesariver:  So much sweetness, fun and laughter with this amazing cast and crew but also knowing it's finally time to say goodbye to them after all these months. I'm really impressed with the amount of flexibility the director allowed the cast and all the great ideas they came up with.  In the cast interviews all the actors have talked about how many of the now famous and memorable scenes were actually ad libs.  Even in this last episode it was JYB and SJK's idea to add the second passionate kiss:smooches2:

I agree with you about SJK. This drama has given me a newfound appreciation of him, not only as an actor, but as a person too.  I was a fan of Jeon Yeo Been before this drama but now I adore her even more. I also loved so many of the supporting actors and will look out for their future performances.  It will be hard to find a combination of actors with this talent, warmth, connection and camaraderie again.  It is genuinely a pleasure watching them all act together led by the excellent director, Kim Hee-Won, who created such a pleasant atmosphere on the set and writer, Park Jae-Bum who gave us these memorable characters.  Thank you to the whole Vincenzo team for an unforgettable drama:heart1:

The trailer for 57th Baeksang Awards has quite a few Vincenzo scenes.  Even Myung Hee and !ngazhi made an appearance! I was surprised to see so much considering the drama only received two nominations.  The award ceremony is next week so wishing good luck to our leading man and director:hwaiting:

Korean fans are asking for international fans help voting in the Popularity Award category which is decided by fan votes.  Please vote for Song Joong Ki if you have Tik tok:

That's one of the loophole. And that brings me back to my unresolved question about his nightmare. Just like you i also got the same impression that he unwillingly joins the mafia life and regrets what he's done. But after trying to see the drama from PJB point of view and connecting it to HYC's last request for him to be the monster, as well as his conversation with the monk about his anger, i get the feeling that his mom's death and that last nightmare is the turning point.

All of this time before the last nightmare happens he only helps CY for his own benefit. Avenging his friend/mentor, getting back his building to save his gold, helping CY whom he cares for. It is never about other people. He's never that noble. This aligned to his way of sharing the gold. He shares it only to those who is directly involved.

His intention starts to shift after her mother's death. I think here's when the nightmare plays an important part. He sees the child who has just lost his parents because of him. Then he sees his mom hugging him and calling him. I think it gives him understanding that he and his mom is a victim of the corrupt system. Topic of capitalism is brought up several times in the drama. And seeing the bigger picture, his mom and the geumga people are all the victims of capitalism. They are forced to choose harsh life to survive the jungle. His old self, a mafia who backs up other form of capitalism/businessman, creates another Joo Young who needs to survive at young age. It's a cycle that needs to stop.

At that time his priority is revenge. His anger of her mother's death can only be relieved by paying back the criminals nth times of what they did. He knows it's not right, so in the end he consults it once more to the head monk. That in the end he goes back to his old way to relieve his anger and he'll feel regret and anguish for the rest of his life. The monk reassures him that Buddha will still compliment him if he brings down the evil just like how Vaisravana keeps yakshas and rakshasas in check. I think this is when his intention truly changes to taking the mafia way to tame the villains. And I also think that this gives him the hope that he deserves small portion of luxury called attachment to this world/love/affection and that pushes him to make effort in the relationship with CY.

He said the island serves several purpose. A hideout, a refuge for the loved ones and place of healing. So the way i see it is that he's building the good mafia organization consisting of people similar to him who are unwillingly put in difficult grey field due to the capitalism and providing safe place called Jipuragi island for those involved.

This post is so, so so brilliant and insightful.  I hadn't even thought about the meaning of the images in the nightmare and the addition of his mother and stopping the cycle of capitalism that oppresses the weak.  Or that his conversation with the monk and identifying himself with Vaisravana allows him to see a greater purpose and also believe that he is worthy of some love/affection.

The finale is certainly controversial and brave.  I do really love that this drama made us think and has led to so many interesting conversations here. The morality debate conversation between @Noname @Le_Amarant @peachfuzz is super interesting to read and I think you have all made very valid points.

SJK himself said Vincenzo is a Villain, he shouldnt be in the society, and its sad that people find Vincenzo character refreshing in a society where the "right" way which is judgment by law is not always just nor fair, and favor powerful ones.

Is this the Song Joong Ki quote you are referring to? “I thought Vincenzo was more heinous than the four villains combined. I just think I got more support from people. In fact, he is a person who should not be supported."

I have to admit i was surprised when I saw SJK said this but I can somewhat understand his thoughts in that it is awful someone like Vincenzo is needed at all because the so-called justice system is so corrupt and unjust.

  13. Very much enjoying reading all the many comments, posts and debates about the ending and the writer's intent.  It is interesting because watching episode 17 to 20 I was thinking the drama had become exactly what a lot of people wanted it to be at the beginning. Remember in the early weeks of the drama when many people were complaining and disappointed by the light tone, it wasn't dark enough, there was too much comedy, Vincenzo was too tame, his wins were too small, he needed to go back to his brutal mafia self, etc..? Then people gradually began to accept and love the story, the characters and were lulled into a comfortableness until episode 17 when the drama became more like what people were expecting it to be at the start and they weren't ready!  I do agree the tonal shifts could have been handled better and that's why some people feel especially cheated.  It is heartbreaking because after two and a half month we want these characters we have come to love and care about over the past two and a half months to have a truly happy ending in a better world rather than a dark, bittersweet (and Han Seo's death) ending in a still very dark world:cry:

As much as i loved this drama I agree it wasn't perfect but still I haven't been this invested in a  drama and its characters in a long time. As @bee_wannabe stated above I think this finale was ultimately a manifestation of Park Jae Bum's own frustrations at corrupt society couple and influenced by his own moral beliefs.  After this very dark and bittersweet ending I'm certain the struggle over the ending that made them delay for a week was deciding if they should/could go as dark as they did ( @TheaN's comment about the "Spear of Atonement" being made quickly at the end backs this up).  I think up until episode 15 or 16 the writer was still undecided about how dark he would take the story and the character of Vincenzo and whether there would be happiness and redemption.  Once the writer made the decision to have Vincenzo's mother murdered was the tipping point (ETA: just saw @bee_wannabe had the same opinion about the killing of Vincenzo mother in her latest post)

Me too, I might be the minority too, but I find the ending satisfying, its not perfect but it stay true to the theme.

From the begining it was about Vincenzo journey in finding his purposes, that he is not just a killing machine. He was always restless, there is this duality within him, he doesnt bat a eye when killing his enemy, but at somepoint his choices in life, bothers him.

Untill he went to Korea, meet the love of his life, the geumga residents, and the evil corporate with deep rooted corruption within society, that he realize he doesnt have to change ways to find redemption. He needs to be strong to protect the people he cared for.

He could punish evil in his way, because lets face it law will not always just and fair in protecting the weak and hopeless. He finally make peace with himself.

I do agree there are some unnecessary death that could have be saved, and I get why many fans were upset.

Great analysis of Vincenzo.  He was restless, he was lost, he was unsure who he was and who he wanted to be, he lies to CY and trying to distance himself from that life from a while. Finally, in the ending episodes when he accepts that dark side of himself and no longer hides who or what he is from CY and finally has a sense of purpose.

Also Does anyone realize the Inzaghi Vincenzo relationship foreshadowing with respect to Vincenzo and Korea. It starts with irritation to annoyance to disgruntled compromise and finally acceptance to ultimate allies. Just like how Vincenzo and Plaza people's trajectory falls. Inzaghi's absence relates to Vincenzo's absence from Korea. Inzaghi left in ep 18 - the episode from which Vincenzo's imminent departure has been foreshadowed. Inzaghi never came back just like Vincenzo!!

Thanks so much for this analysis. I have been trying to understand Inghazhi's disappearance.  The depth of the writing!

Thanks very much for sharing the SJK interviews @Le_Amarant and @bee_wannabe  This drama has made me appreciate SJK so much! Love reading his insights and knowing that this drama and his experience has been such an important and special one for him - emotionally and professionally.

Netflix and it's crappy translations didn't properly the flirtiness (and hotness:flushed:) of their kiss conversation correctly.

Thank you to this Twitter account which has been doing the good work and highlighting all the missed nuances in the NF translations:

Vincenzo shows his love for Cha Young in so many ways that saying the sentence "I love you" isn't really necessary.  I appreciated that the drama showed that Vincenzo was still writing to Cha Young every month using the same words she learned just for him.  His way of telling her he was safe, he was thinking of her and how important her words were to him.  I think if not for Covid-19 we probably would have got some overseas scenes.  i also saw a great Youtube comment that the name of Vincenzo's island is another tribute to Papa Hong and now there are two "final straw" refuges for people: Jipuragi in South Korea and the island of Pagliuzza in the Mediterranean sea.

The Min Seong cameo was a hilarious surprise and I'm so happy Cha Young cleared Vincenzo's mother of her murder charge and put away Min Seong's mother too.  in a very dark episode those were some of the few moments of lightness.

I noticed that in the coffee shop scene they spent a second or so showing the inside of Vincenzo’s coffee cup after he finished his coffee. Reminded me of Turkish coffee readings (the cup was also smaller similar to Turkish coffee I think) and the leftover coffee seemed to reflect the yin yang sign again. In Turkish coffee readings that can mean two Messages either ‘find your balance’ or ‘infinite love’ for CenCha going back to the table scene when they fell asleep after getting drunk in the same yin yang shape I’m guessing it means infinite love which means it should be a happy ending :)

if not the yin yang sign it could also be interpreted as the letter S which also stands for ‘happiness’ but I think the yin yang and infinite love is the more relevant symbolism here.

A couple of days late but thanks for highlighting this.  We got a happy ending of sorts and there is no doubt they complete each other:)

It seems that I am of minority here who LOVED the ending to bits. It was a very satisfying ending for me. Major kudos to the writers for sticking to their guns. They allowed Vincenzo to embody a mafia's murderous and tenacious ways to the very end. Vincenzo is probably one of the best-written anti-heroes I have seen in kdramas. He remained dark and merciless till the very end. We even got confirmation that he still continues to lead the same tenacious ways. This drama was never written to show a mafia's redemption arc or atonement. It was done to reiterate that the world can be so evil, that there would be instances where justice should be served mercilessly. With that in mind, Vincenzo is able to justify his existence as someone who uproots evil mercilessly, when the law is no longer sufficient to punish the monsters. As an audience, I feel so wrong rooting for a character like Vincenzo, but at the same time, this is what dramas are all about. We all have that inner monster in us and if I can allow that "monster" in me to be satisfied by vicariously living through a drama character, the writers have done their jobs. Thank you writers for not being cowards!

I totally agree you. I LOVED this episode and this ending!  it was well-written, brave and truly beyond my imagination as the cast were promising. Park Jae Bum truly deserves all the praise because this is how you write an anti-hero and his journey.  I actually had goosebumps during the last 15 minutes.  Just wow!:yay:

    Quote

This drama was never written to show a mafia's redemption arc or atonement.

Quoting you again because the bolded needs to be said louder for everyone.  I think a lot of the audience mistakenly made that assumption at first (myself included) and so did Vincenzo for a brief time. However, It was made very clear during the talk with Mr Tak in the beginning of episode 16 that Vincenzo is always going to be villain and that is something Vincenzo himself had to learn to accept:

Mr Tak to Vincenzo in episode 16: "Leaving the past behind and becoming a new person.  Forget all that.  Do what you do best.  That's what you can do to help the wold"

Vincenzo can't become someone new or try to be someone he isn't.  He can use his villainous methods to help others but he is never going to be "good" in the traditional sense.  This is something Mr Hong, the senior monk, Cha Young and Mr Tak all recognised and accepted about him.

:fullofhearts:Vincenzo and Cha Young are now officially my favourite drama couple ever. I loved both of their strong, independent and unique characters and the way they handled the romance was bittersweet but perfect for these two true anti-heroes. So romantic and we finally got incredible kisses in character:wub:  "Villains never break up because they are tenacious even when they love"  He literally said he loves her and they will never break up. He has committed himself to her for life.  He has a whole island and a room waiting for her! Both Cha Young and Vincenzo are working and dispensing justice and helping others in their own ways but Vincenzo will come back at least once a year for a diplomatic event and she will go and visit him.  He was confessing to her in his own way throughout the episode.  He even compares them to the fated lovers in the Chilseok folk tale who were forced to live apart and could only meet each other once a year.  You can't get more romantic than that!

(The story of Chilseok from wikipedia)

    Spoiler

"a heavenly king had a daughter called Jiknyeo (Hangul: 직녀, Hanja: 織女), who was a talented weaver. One day, when she looked out of the window while weaving, she saw a young man, a herder called Gyeonwu (Hangul: 견우, Hanja: 牽牛), just across the Milky Way, and fell in love with him; the father allowed the two to marry. Afterwards, Jiknyeo refused to weave clothes, and Gyeonwu did not take good care of the cows and sheep. The king grew furious, and ordered the couple to live separately, allowing them to meet only once a year. On the seventh day of the seventh month of each year, they were excited to meet each other, but could not cross the Milky Way. However, crows and magpies worked together to form a bridge across the Milky Way for the couple. After a while, their sadness returned, for they were forced to wait another year before meeting again. It is believed crows and magpies have no feathers on their heads because of the couple stepping on their heads. If it rains on that night, it is believed to be the couple's tears."

I was saddened by Han Seo's death but I was kind of expecting it given the Biblical allusions we have had from Han Seok with the Babel Tower. I think this was supposed to parallel with Cain & Abel. I said a few weeks ago that they were making him more and more likeable to the point that it made me nervous they were going to kill him and after his conversation with Vincenzo in episode 19. ..  At least he died doing good and sincerely helping his real (non-blood related) hyung:bawling:  Weirdly, Seung-hyuk's murder actually shocked me more. I was not expecting Han Seok to have him knifed on the court room steps and the press taking pictures as he lies there bleeding out:o

Cha Young stated yesterday that someone like Han Seok is never going to be punished by conventional justice methods and Han Seo states this episode that he wasn't punished when he murdered multiple people in middle school. He is someone who Vincenzo's type of brutal justice is needed for because the world is set up to protect people like him no matter how many people they hurt.  That's why it is satisfying to live vicariously through Vincenzo as he finished them off so cruelly in this episode. Myung Hee and Han Seok got what they deserved and I'm impressed the drama didn't shy away from their torturous endings.

I was surprised by the absence of Inzaghi this episode but nice to see he was mentioned by Vincenzo and Cha young when he was talking about the bird bridge to bring them together.

The ending credits were amazing and got me so hyped again!  What an incredible, thrilling and emotional and fun journey this drama was. Thank you to everyone in the thread for making watching this unforgettable drama such an unforgettable experience :heart1:

He even arranged for the lesser known actors to be seated in the middle, while he sit on the side, cited that he will get a lot of exposure from the camera anyway.

That is so sweet of SJK!  It is sad because they can't have a wrap party because of COVID-19 so this is a way to have some fun together one last time.  I thought that was such a courteous gesture from SJK so he and JYB took a back seat so the supporting cast could be in the centre.  The video also ended with credits for all of the supporting actors first with JYB and SJK last which I also thought was really nice.

Now, now. Give Hanseok a break. He pulled the trigger without aiming first. Besides, it looked like he was shocked to realize he had shot the "love" of his life. Pfft. His audacity is really something.

If the writer had given us more of his backstory with CY, I whould have believed him when he said he loved her. At least in his twisted way. But they didn't give us anything. Instead, they dropped it right after CY found out his real identity.

Their backstory would also add colors to Hanseok's character. Now he's just staight up villain. The obly thing keeping me from fully hating on him is his face. Heheh.

Agreed.  That wasn't at all believable because they never really developed it and dropped the Han Seok having feelings for CY about 10 episodes ago. I think they should have kept the love triangle route for his character and his twisted feelings for CY because at least it would have given Han Seok's character a bit more dimension than angry, violent psycho and spiced up the dynamic between him, CY and Vincenzo.

I don't know if anyone has said this but if vincenzo had helped hanseo with the crazy dude CY wouldn't have gotten shot.

I have so many questions concerning Myunghee.  Why did she frame herself for hanseok? is she in love?

Also I hope Vincenzo doesn't kill the owner of Wusang law firm. He does deserve to go to jail though

I agree with you and also with @Le_Amarant's reasoning about why Vincenzo made the decision he did. I think the problem was the way the scene was set up.  The blocking for the characters in the scene was kind of clumsy or they could have had CY be more tied up so it took Vincenzo longer to free her.  The way they were spread out, how easily he untied her and time elapsed it seems like it would have been totally feasible for Vincenzo to untie her, CY to get away or fully out of harm's way and Vincenzo to help out Han Seo.  Usually I would be annoyed about the female lead being used as the bait in the ending episodes but I think we were all expecting this scenario so I can accept it this once:lol:  I hope this doesn't mean CY is going to spend the whole of episode 20 sidelined and unconscious in a hospital bed<_<

I did love that other than that she wasn't the typical damsel in distress and unlike many dramas characters she was smart enough to realise that when a guy dressed in black with a mask and hat is heading towards you in a parking lot, you should be worried!

Myungee and Han Seok's relationship is so creepy.  I think they seem to have some kind of non-romantic Oediplal relationship going on.  She almost acts like his mother at times and I don't believe she would take the fall for anyone else.

The scene with V being clingy made me realize that he actually has no friends, lol. Apart from Guemga family, Mr Cho and HanSeo he’s all alone in Korea though that’s about 15 people. It looked like he had no one to hang out with with Cha Young busy.

How smart was Cha Young to hit the kingmaker dude right when he was talking about the gold. I bet she didn’t want him to spill the beans thus the guemga tenants still don’t know about it, I wonder if they will ever find out about it. But V has to share it 7 ways now including to include the monks.

why does Vincenzo have to leave anyway? Is it because of his passport? Or he has to send the gold somewhere(Malta)?? I don’t get why he has to leave at all.

And even the head monk isn't available.  I thought that part was funny too because he usually goes to the monk when he needs advice.  Maybe he was going to ask him for advice about a ~friend~ who likes a girl lmao!

I loved Cha Young sneaking away and hitting the Kingmaker!  Yassssss girl!:fiercebunny:

Good question about leaving.  Firstly, he has committed a lot of crimes and made a lot of enemies during his brief stay!  It would be safest for him to get away and lie low for a while. Also he had other plans and obligations before he got involved with Jipuragi that he needs to sort out.  It was never in his plans to stay in Korea long term.

This whole scene was so cute!  Poor jealous Vincenzo. I love that he was pretending to work and then asking her 20 questions before she goes:lol::lol::lol:

I just thought they looked so pretty in this scene:wub:

  19. Episode 18 was awesome!  From the beginning with the Geumga plaza family saving vincenzo and FINALLY showing us all their hidden skills.  i loved the title cards and images for their hidden pasts: LMAO Mr Tak's hair :lol::lol: and Mr Ahn's head of Vincenzo's fanclub. "Oh my Consigliere!":lol::lol:  Mrs Kwak was boxing her son in their first appearance and now it all makes sense! Shocked Chef Toto is a Korean wrestling champion (I had to Google Ssireum and learned it is traditional Korean wrestling) :o

Our Cha Young was back after her lack of scenes last episode.  She was hard at work and back to her usual sassy self this episode!:happyshakes: So happy seeing all her character development from the old selfish Cha Young to Cha Young who is teary-eyed with happiness winning the case for the residents and will risk her life for others.  The CenCha moments were back in full force as well. We even got Jealous!Vincenzo and he finally promised he will come back! There were so many great moments between them today before the last painful one. We are all so invested in this show and the characters.  It's funny we were all expecting that something would happen to CY at the end and we knew she would be kidnapped but I was still shocked.  I actually screamed out loud even though I know she will be alright:cries: The look of fury in Vincenzo's eyes though:onfirex:

Now the court case is out of the way, it's time for them to finish off the villains.  Vincenzo is really showing his dark side recently.  Now we know from that chilling scene last week his Mafia nickname was Gatto sazio - the cat that's full toys with a mouse all day before eating it. The way he played with and killed Prosecutor Jang is scary especially as we know he has met his family.  I can't wait to see how he will deal with Myung Hee and Jang Seok.  Will Vincenzo change his rules about not harming women and children?  Or just get someone else to harm her?  Is it wrong that I kind of want Seung-hyuk to get a lesser punishment. Maybe it's just because I find his cowardly, selfish character so entertaining but I don't think he is as evil as those two.

Now Han Seok has just gone full psychopath but he is still such a "cheap villain" as Cha Young called him. Doesn't have the guts ior smarts to take Vincenzo on head to head so uses CY as bait:angry: Kwak Dong Yeon is so good as Han Seo.  THe way he idolised Vincenzo is adorable and he broke my heart when his brother re-appeared,  You can see the PTSD in his actions from all the years of being traumatised by Han Seok.  Still, his relationship with his new hyung gave him the strength to rebel.  Please let him survive to run Babel legally and hang out with his Vin-hyung:bawling:

We were right about the monk's moving the gold.  The scenes of them moving the gold with the help of Vincenzo, Cha Young, Mr Nam and Miri were so funny:lol: I wonder where Vincenzo has hidden the Guillotine file?

On a side note, I think they are one of the most equal relationship in K-drama couple, they listen and respect each other opinion and the protect each other. CY protects VC as much as VC protects her. She took a bullet for him! Gosh..

I agree with this so much.  It is so refreshing! I think it is one of the healthiest, romantic non-toxic relationships I have seen in a drama couple:wub:

The pre-released scene, Vincenzo tells Han Seo that he will leave Korea once he settles everything. He’s wearing the same outfit as he was during his drink with Cha Young. Didn’t want the writer to go the route of noble idiocy but looks like he is. Instead of a confession, we will probably get Vincenzo telling Cha Young to distance herself from him for her own safety. I want to flip tables!! Just two episodes of romance is too much to ask for unfortunately. :bawling:

Let me put on my clown make-up!  There was me thinking his return last week meant he had a change of heart about leaving Korea:bawling:

Well this drama isn't really a romance drama. So it is kind of expected that there will not be too many romance element

Personally, I went into this drama just expecting a hint of romance.  Given the writer's track record I wasn't expecting us to get anywhere near as much romance as we have.  I think I am too greedy now we received so much more than I expected in previous episodes  :flushed:

as I understand it I have never seen a bride in black, white the color of tradition, I don't think the type of dress is a wedding dress, however, they could be witnesses of a marriage.

However, it could be the party for the promise of marriage that is often used to do with families, black goes well with green.

Same. I have never heard of brides wearing black at an Italian wedding unless it was a conscious style choice. Traditionally, they wear white to represent innocence and purity.

Right! I really wasn't expecting any MAJOR twists or surprises. It is making me apprehensive. Should I be excited? Nervous? Scared? Happy? Sad? :idk:

For some reason I am really nervous about all the hot air balloon hints especially as Seok Do only gave Vincenzo one ticket. I really hope I am overthinking:fearful:

my one theory about the gold is that it’s buried under the cross that Vincenzo helped the monk carry many episodes ago. So earlier the gold was protected by Buddha and now the cross.

That's my theory too. That is why they have been going out begging for alms more than usual. They are secretly taking out the gold and hiding it in the Church.

I thought this part from the ep 17-18 making video was so sweet! SJK and KDY helping Yoon Byung Hee (Mr Nam) as he doesn't know how to skate

@mystic62Happy news for SJK fans!:relaxed: I wonder if there will be English subs

I can't make sure whether she always eats when she's not killing or not. But at the special episode the actress is asked the question : eating is MH's trademark. while eating is she actually planning for a murder/destroying others? The actress herself says that the eating act symbolizes predator eating its prey. That it is inevitable that the strong one will destroy and eat up the weak one. (Take it with a grain of salt since i'm not fluent in korean. I count on the written korean caption, google translate and my own interpretation)

Very interesting!  Thanks for explaining about Myung Hee's eating

Who here believe our lovable Inzaghi will be the savior to Vincenzo again in the final episode.   It's ironic that he brought karmas to almost every Italians who came to Korea to kill Vincenzo.  I predict Paolo will the next victim of the pigeon mafia once he lands in the country to deal his step brother and Luca would get along much better with the bird compare to our consigliere

:lol:I wonder what Inzaghi's disappearance in Episode 18 symbolises. I am sure there is a symbolic meaning behind Inzaghi and the evolution of their relationship.  He and Vincenzo have become closer and closer as Vincenzo becomes more and more comfortable in Korea. When Vincenzo decides to leave for Italy (temporarily), Inzaghi doesn't come to the window.

Hanseo you baby. The scene in episode 17 where HanSeo was happily skating after Vincenzo left the skating rink (after he tripped HanSeo) was so cute, like a happy child after getting a pat for doing something good. That scene sold me that he was on V’s side.

And also after joining V’s side, his whole look has changed, his hair is always down with Vincenzo and the pin in his tie is also gone. The details in Vincenzo are so good. It’s like he no longer feels  suffocated by HanSeok knowing he has Vincenzo on his side.

HanSeo was so cute!  Good observation about Han Seo's styling now he has his new nice hyung, Vincenzo on his side.  The costume and hair team for this drama really deserve recognition because the way they have used styling to compliment the story is so masterful.  Vincenzo's  styling has also found a middle ground.  At the start he was always Mafia style unless he was at home.  Then for the middle episodes until his mother's death he seems to moving away totally from his Mafia styling with loose hair, less formal clothes.  Now his styling is a mix of both his Mafia styling and a slightly more relaxed style as he embraces both sides of himself.  SJK looks incredible in every scene of course:wub:

I don't think this is necessarily correct. Their love languages are different. Chayoung's love language is words of affirmation (and maybe physical touch), so she's always declaring her intentions verbally or physically.

Vincenzo's love language seems to be acts of service (and maybe giving gifts) - staying in Korea to help her take down Babel, plotting the pig blood drop because she mentioned she wanted to see it, buying her that jewelry set, pressing the button on the bomb so she didn't have to bear that burden, and ultimately, getting off the plane for her. Maybe he is thinking to himself, "WTH, how much more obvious can I be?".

People just conflate expression of love with words and verbal declarations.

I like that distinction about their love languages.  I might even say "touch" for Vincenzo because Vincenzo inadvertently touches Cha Young a lot^_^ but i do think Vincenzo will have to verbalise if their relationship will ever go anywhere beyond friendship and partnership.

Hollllld up. That's Aristotle's Twin Flames theory, which is THE original soulmates theory in Western canon. It's not a friendzoned quote at all. I just finally paid closer attention to this. Netflix butchered the translation. If HCY was quoting Aristotle's Twin Flames to Vincenzo, then it's as big a declaration of love as you can get.

Cha Young definitely said friendship in Italian (according to italian speakers) so it looks like she made the mistake and thinks she is only talking about friendship.  I expect Vincenzo knows the real quote

Though they are entertaining to watch and carry their scenes well, its really strange that there was suddenly so much of Han Seo and Director Han in these two episodes. I don't think these two were intended to be the main side characters. I wonder if the director/producer saw that Geumga Plaza crowd didn't fulfill their potential, and hence, decided to do last minute changes instead. Even Han Seok, the real villain, seems to have reached a plateau where character-development is concerned. He got sidelined in these two episodes and all he was allowed to do was look angry, fume, plot and be frustrated again.

There was so much potential for the development of HCY and VC relationship but it seemed rushed. After his mother's death, all there was was the pat on the back by the stream. I am not sure why there was the need to bring Luca to persuade VC to go to Italy (for what?) and then a quick about turn. That story arc took all of 20 minutes. It was like they needed some tension but didn't have time to play it out.

I agree. This is just my opinion I think the writer realised he made a mistake with the Plaza residents by writing them so unlikeable and two dimensional for two thirds of the drama when the he saw the audience reaction towards them was so negative.  He's tried to redeem them in the last third but it was a bit too late.  Also there are just too many of them-especially since he added Mr An and Bye Bye Balloon-that he seems at a bit of a loss on what to do with them all.  I also think he increased Han Seo's role because KDY received a positive response for his acting in his early scenes.  However, I actually think the evolution of Han Seo's character arc and his bromance with Vincenzo has been very well handed and seems organic.  I also think Jo Han Chul is hilariously good as Han Seung-hyuk.  Self-preservation is his motivation. Not sure if you have watched the excellent Secret Forest/Stranger but I saw him compared to a more comedic version of the smarmy, self-interested, corrupt Seo Dong-jae character (played by Lee Joon-Hyuk) and I think that is so accurate.  I kind of hate him but his scenes are so entertaining at the same time.

I agree Han Seok has not quite lived up to that incredible reveal moment in episode 4.  His character just isn't smart and strategic enough.  I still think this is down to a rewrite revealing his true character early and scrapping what I think was the original plan for the character to be working with Jipuragi and potentially more of a love triangle before finding out about his betrayal.  I have seen some tweets guessing the new character who kidnapped Mr Cho might be the final boss they need to defeat. His nickname is "The Kingmaker" and he even had a "King" playing card as his backdrop in his lair.  This also ties back to the chess metaphor Vincenzo used.

I felt the Vincenzo/Cha Young relationship seemed more like their usual selves in episode 18 than the strange distance in episode 17.  Maybe because Vincenzo was no longer wrapped in grief? The warmth was back but it was still hindered by the lack of CY screen time.  It was rushed but I think the whole Luca appearance was just to show Vincenzo making a conscious, active decision to stay in South Korea even when he was needed back in Italy. Korea is now his priority and where he has found his family...of course, him looking at the pen from CYis significant to one of the main reasons he wants to stay;)
