  1. The fact that Hye Sun's movie was chosen to be shown to officials from Congress as a reflection of the a real life problem that needs to be addressed is more important, and socially relevant, than any box office success or critical response could ever be. If ever an arrow hit the bullseye this is the one. If laws become changed and a society becomes improved in it's treatment of people (as all of GHS's movie messages have addressed), no amount of critical praise, or monitary gain, comes anywhere close in terms of cultural impact. Nice going, GHS! You are truly people's champ...  =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

  2. If we can't have her coming back as a bubbly, and cute character, then I'm ready for her to play the femme fatale in her next drama. She's finally embracred her feminine look and we all know that she has the goods to pull this off, so I'd like to see her reappear as a character who will knock the viewers socks off both visually, and artistically. We all know that she's got it. She's a grown woman now. It's time for her to flaunt it. I think that she could shut a lot of mouths by opening them... @-) :-O :-S  :)] #:-S :)>-

...My 2 cents --  To appreciate Koo, it takes deeper thinking, heart & appreciation of human genuineness (her need to create & to communicate her ideas and the tenacity of pursuing her dreams); that why a lot her fans are older and are international (western thinking- more open).  Her journey will be a long one with ups & downs- but necessary as she needs to see things herself.   HS is doing this publicly, so she has to deal with negative comments, but at the same time, she has great support from her fans as well...

Your point about Hye Sun's fans (particularly in this forum) being older and subject to a western type of thinking is well stated. I believe this to be true regarding many of her most loyal fans. I've always gotten the feeling that those who would detract from her her goals, and accomplishments, are mostly among those who are generally younger, female, and a majority of whom her own countrymen. It's rather unfortunate that an obvious thread of jealousy is at the root of the most negative, and biting, attacks. It's just so much healthier (both coming and going) for ones inner person to be supportive and complimentary of other's accomplishments than it is to be spiteful and petty. We should celebrate each others triumphs as we would wish to to celebrate our own. There are plenty of actions out there that might warrant our scorn and disdain. Being determined and having the courage to push one's self to the limits of one's own abilities need not be among them.:)>-

  4. We're right there with you, Elizabeth! :)>- Although each of us supports, and admires, Hye Sun for all the wonders that she creates, I'm quite certain that every one of us prefers to see her pretty face staring out from the screen in another drama more than anything else... :)

  5. Welcome aboard, @chin7088! As far as critical analysis goes, as you say, none of us has seen the film so it's difficult to judge it's merits. Personaly, having huge faith in GHS and wishing the best for her probably clouds my judgement, as well. What I don't condone is taking in box office totals as a reason to pan the film, or passing judgement upon the artist's direction in her own personal life and career pursuits. This piling on, join the crowd mentality, is often born out of envy upon the viewers's part for people who are successful and independent. Goo Hye Sun is who she is. Who is anyone else to tell her which path to follow? If you don't like her work, don't patronize it. But accusing her of lacking direction, or actual talent, I call b.s. on that... [-X

  6. Not having seen her movie, but knowing the theme and it's dark images, I'd have to agree that the problem with it's gaining mass appeal lies here. The people of South Korea have experienced so much tragedy as of late that they indeed need something to smile about. Hye Sun, and her actors, know that they are doing their best, and that a person's best will still not always result in mass appeal. Is she adding to a resume of buried treasure that will someday become rediscovered? Only time will tell. Like it, or not, people are in love with the happy, plucky, Geum Jandi/Yang Gukwha image that made Goo Hye Sun a star in the first place. And, who could blame them? :-?? It's difficult to accept a known talent moving out of their type-cast image, and more difficult still to grasp to those talents creating darker characters. There is nothing new under the sun as each artist has faced this difficuly since day one. Bob Dylan was booed lustily for showing up with an electric band at the Newport Folk Festival, in 1965. The Beatles had girl fans crying as if their idols had died when they grew facial hair and escaped their moptop image. Change is not always an easy thing to accept. [-(
We do know this though: Our girl is as fighter. She is a supremely talented, and motivated person who will not be tied down to a chosen image, and will not be kept down long by any lack of positive popular opinion. She is the person that we know her to be. And, I believe that she will be proven right when things are held in the proper perspective down the road. Not even Alfred Hitchcock had a hit movie every time out. Yet many of his earlier "flops" were later judged to be masterworks. Both Citizen Kane (Orson Welles' 1941 classic, which is widely regarded as the greatest movie of all time) and It's a Wonderful Life were box office failures in their initial runs and are now revered as the absoulute zenith of great film making. ^:)^
Will GHS's early films later be judged differently? Only time will tell. But be certain of this: She will pick herself back up,  dust herself off, and those who she has shown loyalty to will continue to show loyality to her. You can bank on it. Me, I'd much rather put my trust in the opinions of someone like Shim Hye Jin than the average critic or moviegoer.
    How about you? :-?

  7. Happy birthday, Goo Hye Sun! A special lady who has touched so many of us from far, and near, and inspired so many across cultures, genders, and age grioups. There have been a great many people who I have admired and looked up to in this world. Most being teachers, famous people in history, athletes, and musicians. In Goo Hye Sun, they've each met their match, and many become exceeded in my heart. She (as we all know;)) is a rare person in this world. Like many of her characters, she is the human embodiement of what a pure soul, and a cheerful willingness to become successful and true to herself, despite any, and all, obstacles that lie in her path is. Every bit of the love that has come her way has been richly deserved, and paid back tenfold to all of us, her fans and admirers by this charismatic, beautiful, and uber-talented dynamo. So happy birthday, Goo Hye Sun, and happy Goo Hye Sun's Birthday to all Sunnies, the world over... <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P

  8. For K-dramas, I'd go with her portrayal as Princess Lee Jae Shin in The King Two Hearts, or the best of all long running dramas, Pure in Heart (also known as: Pure 19, or Hearts of 19), which is 167 episodes of delightful comedy, emotion filled drama, and the best overall cast of any show that I've seen. But, seriously, she's won at least a half dozen awards for her acting, so it would be hard to call any single one her definitive best. :-? :-?? Happy hunting! :)>-

  9. Now that is how to properly write a film review. :-bd Note how author Justin Chang allows his review to mostly outline the film, and it's performances, for what they are, and not how he would like for them to be.  :-? We are given an account of the film, at hand, and not the critic's suggested rewrite of how it should have been done. Nicely done, reviewer Chang. =D>

"....That's so impressive that though HS doesn't understand Mandarin, her acting with the other actors & actresses were so seamless- HeySun-ssii, you're one amazing actress ^:)^  ^:)^
One last thing on AB- it's fun to watch HS doing a lot of facial exaggerations in AB since it's based on a manga- my daughter read manga so I've seen this unique characteristic of a manga/anime.   And our HS does that too well!!..."

  11. I never speculate over who will paired up with Yoon Eun Hye in her projects as the lure, for me, is always her. I do, however, envy those who will get the privilige of sharing the same space with her warm presence, bubby personality, and beautiful face, and form, for the ensuing weeks of production. Oh you lucky dogs, you... :)>-

"Daughter proves a big step in the right direction for Ku, though I'm still not convinced she has what it takes to be a full time filmmaker. However, following this marked improvement, I'm eager to see what she takes on next."
He is not convinced but then he saw the marked improvement on GHS and he will be waiting eagerly what GHS will make next :D :x

See, I told you he was a bleep! ;) I know a cookie cutter review when I see one...[-(

  13. While none of us has seen GHS's film, I think that it is relevant to point out that critics (be they art, drama, writing, etc.) by, and large, are a people who have received an education in wordplay, and the ability to employ a thesaurus, in order to convince the reader that they are indeed, the smartest, and wisest person in the room. Relying on a checklist of cliches, and heavily influenced through their own individual focus, it often becomes the reviewer's main goal to turn the attention away from that being reviewed to the words written around it. Throwing in French words (who among us didn't feel the need to immediately google the word vraisemblable:-??) and jaded, uniformed passages such as:
"Where the film most overplays its hand is in its caricatured representation of the mother. Though the character comes from a real place, veteran actress Shim Hye-jin lays it on too thick in her portrayal of a foul-mouthed, violent mother. Rather than a nervy, repressed middle-aged woman, she seems more like a lunatic."
And, "Least convincing is when the film is at its most serious, highlighting the horrific abuse that the daughter is subjected to. Rather than shocking, these come off as ludicrous and upset the tonal balance of the film."
This  kind of  mindset has me wondering not one bit if reviwer Pierce Conran has ever been the victim of child abuse, or knows anything about the realities of mental illness. Those who would habitually abuse children, animals, men, women, etc are very much cartoonish, incomprehensible, and most definitely fit the description of one who is a "lunatic"  Are there realities, and behaviors, in our world that defy logical purpose, or description? Maybe not where Mr. Conran lives, although I suspect that it does occur. :-S
Having read hundreds of critiques, nearly all written by people in love with their own works, and who didn't quite make the cut as actual artists, I tend to put little stock in them. I won't even say that they are being dishonest with themselves. But, they are not always honest with us. Honestly, I don't really give a hoot, one way, or another. Goo Hye Sun is not an actress who dabbles in being a director. She is a director with three feature films and a growing resume of shorts and cfs to her credit. Lastly, The United States does not have the final word on what passes for excellence. People of different cultures see things from a different points of view.  We put out plenty of sub-par stuff over here. That's what attracted me to Korean drama in the first place...:)>-

  14. Thanks for the shout outs @cheerkoo, and @Geuntangdi:) I happy that each of you took a look at the Hello,Franceska series and found it to be funny. I was elated that director GHS referenced that particular role (out of the many that Shim Hye Jin has played!) as it gives a great indication of the range that the SHJ has as an actress, and I'm sure played a big part in our director's choice to cast her as the co-lead in Daughter. 'Franceka' is indeed funny, but also includes many serious, thought-provoking, and poignant scenes. You can find the first two seasons (52, 22 minute episodes) at GoodDrama.net, which is a great, free, source for drama. There literally hundreds to choose from there. @-) If you go on and watch a few more episodes, comedic actress Park Hee Jin will appear, and is guaranteed to have you in stitches.  :)) Both she and SHJ were also featured in 2012's comedy Heaven Sent (aka I Need a Fairy) which is another incredibly funny romp... :)>-

  15. I really enjoyed the long, informative, interview with Shim Hye Jin and Goo Hye Sun. (And I, also, would like to give thanks to Cheerkoo for interpreting it for us! =D>) I was elated that Hye Sun mentioned Shim Hye Jin's performance, as Franceska, in Hello, Franceska, as an example of how she, as an actress, can deliver a diverse range of characters who (like that dramedy) can have you laughing one minute, and tearing up the next. As I mentioned before, I really thought I'd struck gold when I tapped into that one a few years back. This lady can be any character that you need. It's easy to tell why she's in such demand, and how she can afford a house like the one she where she lives.  ^:)^

Can't wait until the premier! Best wishes to our wonder woman for a rousing success. I think this may be the one...:)>-
  16. Wow! Yoon ji looks radiant and that room was certainly filled with a large number of seriously beautiful, and talented people.  #:-S Actress Do Ji Won ( who appears at the beginning of the second video provided by @conankung) is 48 years old! Does this woman ever age? :-?? I'm so happy that our princess will be entering another phase in her life, am looking forward to her new drama, and to seeing her for many more years to come... :)

  17. I would like nothing better than to learn the GHS and the entire cast of Pure in Heart were in attendance at Lee Yoon Ji's wedding. That drama is where I first found those two brilliant, beautiful ladies, and those are the characters I remember them as the most. Maybe Gukwha could catch the bouquet and get the ball rolling in her own regard... ;)

  18. I know that our sweet, adorable, princess prefers simplicity, and definitely marches to her own beat. But, part of me would like for her to be able to return home, at the end of each day, to a palace the likes of her co-star in her upcoming movie:

This is a palace befitting a queen!  :P
  19. I really wish that KBS would re-release Pure in Heart so that we could watch it again with a quality print instead of just the low quality one available online. The show holds up, and every episode is a gem, but those beautiful ladies need to be seen in the original, pristine colors, and definition. I certainly agree with @frisco's assessment of Hye Sun's physical attributes. She definitively has it, both coming, and going...  :-O

  20. Shim Hye Jin (GHS's costar in Daughter) has long been one of the great screen beauties and was one of the most popular movie actresses of the 90s. She got her start while tagging along with her sister (who was a top model) at a photo shoot and became popular in a nationally run Coca-Cola ad.

To me, she'll always be the beautiful, ax-wielding, vampiress from the comedy drama, Hello Franceska. Best of luck to the two ladies and I hope that the film will be a huge success...:)>-
