What does it take to get her back on the small screen?  I am sure she is missed so much.  How much does it take to product a 16 or 20 episode drama?  What will it require her come back?  I'd like to know then maybe we can do something about it.   Seriously!!!

It's hard to know what to say. The pressure campaign, from whatever entity refuses to back off, has obviously rattled production companies and Hye Sun herself as she has apparently gone completely underground. As in the case with her fellow peer, Yoon Eun hye, another actress who enjoyed immense popularity before a similar public faction used it's will to continue their one-sided attack, leaving both talents frightened, unprotected, and defeated, I believe that KHS has resolved herself to give up fighting, maybe never to return, or to wait it out hoping that it may finally fizzle out. Groups who run these organized attacks are special breed of crazy and show no sign of releasing their victims as they believe it makes them powerful and not the sullen, sad figures of jealousy and loathing that they truly are. Be that as it may, I'm happy that our girl hasn't resulted to the drastic measures that has cost their lives of so many within the industry who are no longer with us. It's a sick world in places and we all suffer from it. Even the monsters who make it so.

How was she a villain? She was the main protagonist's first love.

By dumping her first love for the rotten guy that she ended up with while after chasing money. Somewhat like the character of Oh Yoon Hee, who went from good (vowing to protect her daughter and fight back against the purveyors of injustice and sociopathic behavior, in episode one of season one) to unforgivably evil (murdering a poor orphan girl who had no one else in the world to protect her) to diabolical (sleeping with the enemy while moving up floors in the penthouse) to heroic martyr (giving her life to save another's.) It's the murder of Min Soel-A, that did it for me. You can't go back from the murder of innocents. For me, I've seen enough of Eugene's dark side. She picked up awards for her soiled dove characters in both of these dramas. I'm ready to see her sunny smile and caring person return. I respect your personal choice for her though. I only began this drama to see her again, and am impressed with the many faces that are new to my eyes, but this drama has been mostly a labor of loathe, for me. I'm compelled to see it through, but am hoping to meet these players seeing happier days in the future. :)

My question is gonna be super stupid, but what make Song Hye Kyo so popular, outside of her body/Face?

Isn't that enough? A lot less talented and less refined people have remained popular despite being less talented and largely lacking in social graces. But actress Song brings beauty, talent, and character into the mix. I don't follow her career closely (I've seen just three of her dramas), but people who are as extraordinary physically attractive as Song Hye Kyo are rare in this world and will become popular just for that reason alone. With SHK, you get a well-rounded and likable person (from what I've heard) to go along with the mix. But even if it were down merely to her beauty and charms, that would be enough. Let's face it, many of the people who make their living in the Korean entertainment (or any other country) do not look like most of us. They are scouted and hired for their looks and, generally, work very hard to grow and maintain their talents and popularity. When you look like a Song Hye Kyo, you are going to continue to be noticed wherever you go. Despite huge pressures put on her as the two decade reigning people's choice as the goddess of the industry, she remains much the same as when as the day she debuted. It's easy to root for people like this. It's not always easy to win the hearts of both genders without incurring a certain amount of jealousy and rancor. SHK has done this. Good for her! :)

  4. The only reason that I tuned in to watch The Penthouse, in the first place, was because it featured Eugene among it's main players. The opening episode of season one ended with a spectacular flying kick, by the character of Oh Yoon Hee to the face of one of the criminal abusers of her daughter and her declaration that this was not over and she would see her daughter gaining her way into the prestigious, but horrible institution where bullying, assault, and occasionally, murder appear to included in the curriculum. I felt it was a great start and settled myself into watching a drama where certainly this would be heroine would, eventually, deal with the bad guys and put things right. This unraveled very quickly as we were treated witnessing unrelented abuse and torture foisted upon a poor, hardworking orphan, eventually killed at the hands of the only apparent "good guy" in the drama!

Knowing that these writers had a habit of changing the past, resurrecting the dead, and rewriting this tale of woe from episode to episode, I held out hope that the character of Oh Yoon Hee, although in her mind had already crossed into evil by even thinking about murdering some poor, unfornite innocent, had been too drunk to remember, and it was only in her mind that she became the murderer. However, after experiencing one ridiculous "jump the shark" episode after another, we finally see Oh Yoon Hee meet her fate while attempting a superhuman effort (Would the writers actually grant her real superpowers this time?) by attempting hold back two cars from forcing her off a cliff. The cars won, Oh Yoon Hee was pitched into the sea, the two cars following after and her body found, cold and dead, later to be wrapped in plastic, entombed inside of a wall at Hera Palace, and finally laid out on a slab in the morgue while her daughter grieved and swore to take out her own revenge plot.

Was this the end of Oh Yoon Hee? In a story where the dead are often resurrected (or, at least, replaced with an exact twin) you could still hold out hope. But wait, there was another resurrection in the offing? Heading for the very least likely option, we see the still mysterious breathing body of Logan Lee, covered in third degree burns, somehow not blown to bits in that same powerful explosion that destroyed everything that he stood three feet away from, in Dr Frankenstein's laboratory awaiting his new life.

Logan Lee! The very same cowardly crybaby who, instead of charging into the scene and rescuing the girl who had been plucked and harvested to save his pampered life, watched impotently as they led her away to what would eventually be the trail of unrelenting misery, and torture, that led to her eventual death. Logan Lee!

This is the character that the writers chose to return from the dead? It's not just the fact that his character only grew any actual "character" after these heinous crimes against humanity could no longer be prevented, or any proper justice handed out, but who out there among the watching public, in anticipation of this drama, was actually out there to see this Logan Lee guy? Among those serving in this stellar cast, the most famed, and acclaimed member is quite obviously the person who has long been noted as the country's national fairy. I can't be the only person out there who saw this drama as a comeback for Eugene and another opportunity to see her acting skills at play. We did get to see her play an array of emotions and and character traits. We saw her be good, turn bad, try to make up for the bad, then disposed of like the poor unfortunate lass whose demise was behind the main plot of this torturous, bad guys always win, snuff film. The good keep dying, and the bad keep on partying.

Logan Lee?!! As long as we are going to resurrecting the dead, and apparently have the powers to do so, can't we bring back the one that most of us came to see in the first place? Why do I get the feeling that Oh Yoon Hee will eventually wake up from this nightmare and it will be her her daughter's first day at school where she will become feted and honored as the person who overcame great personal strife to win her place and gain acceptance from her peers and instructors? Wishful thinking, on my part. I don't think that any of us will ever actually awaken from this nightmare. The drama will end, and we'll walk away with that "thousand yard stare" that combat soldiers get from being exposed to, and numbed by too many unexplainable atrocities to comprehend.  On the good end though, the series is beautifully filmed and the players each look marvelous. Great packaging. Terrible product!

  5. The not recognizing close relatives is mostly a K-Drama plot device just as it is in the case that male characters will pretend that they are not find many of these extraordinarily pretty female characters attractive. This goes against the laws of nature. Even babies can tell who the prettiest people are and each of us carries unmistakable physical looks or traits carried on through our bloodlines. Even with our features masked, our movements and inborn tendencies will betray our origins. I often find myself frustrated by these unrealistic plot devices, but know well that they are part in parcel to the play. A mom would know her own kid if he or she was covered in mud or only revealing their eyes through a mask. :rubchin:

  6. This may of interest. She's seems very happy and and proud to share some of her works here. Goo Hye Sun's channel on YouTube features many chances to see what she's up to these days and show support by visiting her site. Be sure that you use the closed captions button as some are fully subbed. This one is:

I want to know if this thread is over? Because sadly it´s been almost two months since no one  commented on Koo Hye Sun here

I wouldn't think so. We just need for our girl come back into the fold and make a drama, or something with mass appeal for people to have something to talk about. A YouTube channel is nice, but we all got to like her through her screen works, of which there have been none in years.

  8. For me, Eugene has always been both a great actress and one of the most beautiful people in dramaland. Great beauty is more often than not followed by an undercurrent of toxic jealousy. Had her acting talent ever been suspect by those doing the casting, she would have been relegated to minor roles, or out of the business long ago. She doesn't need acting as her only go to as we all well know. She is a person of various talents. The extraordinary beauty and charm is just the cherry on top of the sundae.

Thank you for the warm welcome, obbor4. I will check out those links for sure.

Just wondering, did most of the people here deactivated and moved to  her IG or just stopped being fans of KHS? It would be so sad if it were the latter.

I don't know that anyone has deactivated other than Hye Sun, herself. Personally, I am a fan of GHS through her dramas, while noting her exploits in other areas, but generally waiting around for her to play another character on the small screen. If you came to her to admire her work as an actress, there hasn't been any since the health problem that saw her leaving her last drama after six episodes. A real pity as her performance in You Are Too Much looked like another great chance for her to shine.

Hi! I am new here - well, newly signed up but I have been lurking for a while now.

You could say I am a new fan of Ku Hye Sun. It was around maybe late 2018  I think when I saw Boys Over Flowers on Netflix. I remember many years ago how I've heard people talk about this drama so I decided to watch it. Although I found the drama funny, even at times when it wasn't supposed to be funny, I was drawn to it - especially to the Jan Di and Ji Hoo pairing. I know it's only a drama but I really adored the 2 of them, I really thought they looked good together, so I started looking for Boys Over Flowers fanfiction where the ending was different.

Anyway, I also looked up both actors, behind the scenes videos of the show, and I was impressed especially with KHS. I was amazed at how talented she was. Such a jack(ie) of all trades! I even watched her other dramas like Absolute Boyfriend, The Musical, Take Care of Us Captain, Angel Eyes, and Blood. I wish I could find the earlier ones with subs: The King and I, and Strongest Chilwoo. I wish to one day be able to see her art exhibit.

When I discovered this soompi forum, I have started reading from the first page - even cross-referencing BOF promo related posts on Kim Hyun Joong's page hehe.

Like all of you as a fan of KHS, I wish her success and real happiness. I hope she completely heals from all the pain she has been through and not mind the haters. From what I see on some Facebook groups and YouTube comments on her videos - even from a decade ago, a lot of people admire her talent and beauty.

I also want to add that I saw The Manager episode she was on. What a hilarious show!
It was also quite touching how she is treated like family by her management agency.

Hi @SidheartA, and welcome to the Goo Hye Sun Soompi page! As a long time fan of this incredible person, I commend of your ability to do the research and find out for your self just how remarkable and diverse in talent, and tenacity, this person has been and remains. I became aware and completely hooked on her through the KBS affiliate, in Los Angeles, and through my favorite all time drama Pure in Heart (aka Pure 19, or Hearts of 19) which ran on local television nearly fifteen years ago. Due to this long running daily drama, I also became a fan of several of her co stars (Lee Yoon Ji, who played the second lead actress and is also the picture that I have for my Soompi picture which you see here, being one) which lead me down the path to many other dramas and players over the years. Soompi was probably the main site that opened up this world to be and I couldn't be more thankful. We do have a great crowd here.

Being as you are on a search to back track dramas of hers, or just about anyone else's, I know of a site that is a never ending source of the latest and many of the greatest dramas, that being DRAMACOOL. Never is there ever a charge, or anything invasive to your system, and it is like a huge library of Asian dramas (including those from Japan, Korean, China, etc.) and movies. I don't know of any other site that has so much to offer in this area.

The address to Goo Hye Sun's first major starring role, Pure in Heart (which will keep you busy for several months following the plucky heroine, 'Yang Gukwha', played exquisitely by our girl!) may be found here:

    https://dramacool.so/drama-detail/pure-19

It's not as high quality, in picture, as other, more recent dramas, but is fully subbed and will guarantee that you fall in love with another one of her characters just as we have for Geum Jandi and every other fictional person that she has brought to life. She was about 22, at the time, and a sweeter character you would be hard-pressed to find. Along with this drama, her page at the site will give you all of the others that you seek. That treasure trove may be found here:  https://dramacool.so/star/koo-hye-sun

Happy watching, and welcome to the club!! :)

  11. This show is well acted and I'm watching the series because it features Eugene, but I'd have to agree with the concern about the violence inflicted upon, and by adults and other children upon the victims in this story. The repeated cruelty towards the orphan child, who'd made good on her own despite tremendous odds, at the hands of a group morally bankrupt millionaires, and their horrible spawn is devastating to see. I keep waiting for the good guys to get some justice and am treated to the same sort of "snuff film" replays of these horrendous crimes against humanity in every segment. Other than the scene where Eugene kicked the guy's teeth out, in episode one, it's been the bad guys winning. I don't need to see that little girl bloodied, and begging for her life, before being thrown from the building again and again. It may be just a drama, but you have to relive the torture repeatedly. Let's move on already!

  12. I don't know if I'll be watching this movie, as the subject matter just tears me up every time that I read about another young person ending their own life feeling that there is no one to turn and that it's just not worth it. We only go around once, you know? The two senior actresses in this film are always so good though that I feel almost compelled to see it. It's the few weeks after, however, when you can't get the characters out of your own head that scares me. The reason that I prefer Korean dramas over movies is that the "good guy" generally wins in the end and there are lessons learned. In tragedies, there is no lesson, no one wins, and the viewer is left only with tearful sadness and a feeling of personal futility. :tears:

  13. This is my second go round with Hong Soo ah and her new look, and it's still sort of odd for me to hear her voice coming out of this face. I must say that the surgeons did an amazing job of not only making her still beautiful, in a different way, and that she still comes off as likable whether she's playing good or evil characters. I do miss her old look though. I've always thought that she was both unique and gorgeous, and so full of comedic energy. I wonder if she still plays baseball? :)

Finally found this community open for discussion on this drama. I noticed most of the users on another site are quick to dismiss Penthouse and Sky Castle having similarities. I think there are clashes with both stories - but this one's on affairs and their focus to get into the arts school. Also the characteristics of the wives, children, and husbands, two mothers with a dark tensions, the murder mystery, the resident clubs, the children's competition. I can almost imagine them as subtle variations of the characters in Sky Castle. (So yeon- mixture of seo jin since all the other residents kiss her RickRoll'D, hye na- anna lee, ye seo- je ni, a set of twins with one rebel and one chill, etc). I know makjang dramas like this usually follow tropes but idk feels kinda iffy when I compare the two kinda like when I watched gone girl then saw 'my dangerous wife' (that kinda feeling vibe). Last time that happened was 'graceful friends', but that didn't turn out well - but it did stray away from castle vibes after a few episodes.

So far Penthouse has an emotional trainwreck that makes me angry, upset, and much more because the characters are so difficult and despicable. There's so many families and so much individuality for them to show but in summary, they're all jerk-y rich with status inferiority issues. It's taking an emotional toll on the kids because they're turning out just as bad as their parents (and maybe even worse). There's no repenting for these kids and adults, they're all hopeless spawns of the devil. I know that Eugene's the representative of heroic justice in this hell of dehumanized beings, but the writer makes it so hard to continue just to watch her growth. Ro Na isn't making it easier.

Eugene's character is supposed to be the bleach that cleans the awful people in this drama. But no much fresh air today to breath on Eugene's side. Such a pity for Ro na's competition though - in this decade, all the entry terms would've been displayed on the website, wouldn't it? There's no way she wouldn't know about about the guidelines and expectations before registering unless it's an 'open for calls' competition. They should've realized Soyeon is a conflict of interest - she's part of the jury yet, and clearly has power for manipulation. Eugene should've expected her daughter to never get in... but Ro Na's reaction was over the top. She is at a stage of teenage rebellion, but blaming her mother for not coming from privilege and faulting her also for the manipulated competition; knowing about Eugene's tensions with Soyeon - is just plain wrong.  Just because you don't get into one school doesn't make your life over. It's like one minute Ro Na is a tolerable character then the next, you want to smack her. She watched her mother is being RickRoll'D on and trampled by a witch lady, and Ro Na pushes her aside screaming 'I want to sing'.  Even if she wants to sing, she should've come back after hearing Eugene out. Today's epi where Eugene sang with Ro Na when she went into panic mode before the competition was kinda sweet though minus the end.

Lee jiah is such a quiet one. She's so timid and nice (or is she faking it?) yet her kids turned out to be disastrous tyrants with bratty behavioural problems (especially the twin daughter, even though they're not biologically hers). No way she didn't know something was going on with her kids and husband behind their back.

Her husband is a two faced pretentious douchebag for cheating and physically abusing their children. It makes sense his children ended up the way they are.

But with his affair with soyeon: It's like c'mon dude, you're next to a huge transparent window smacking it up - when you don't want to be discovered - again, in your residential building. Just asking to get caught...

Soyeon - not much to talk about her other than how witchy she is for abusing wealth and power. Her affair with kijoon I don't really get - other than the thrill? and her husband hating her.

Ma ri and her daughter are spoiled eggs. (Jin Ji hee plays that annoying spoiled daughter pretty well like usual)

Joo hee doesn't show up tons, but her character is bearable but her family's not.

Wow, the kids tho. The addition of their stories made the plot more frustrating to watch. All the rich kids are such entitled snoots - but that's expected of wealthy upbringing and bad role models . They're young but so wrong in so many ways. The female twin aka the Ringleader, even with a sad backstory of abuse with her brother and not being biological, has no excusable pity from me for her treatment to Anna (even if she lied). The way the kids all disappeared, bagged Anna, dragged her into a secluded junkyard to shame her for lying and getting first place was a real nightmare.

I thought soyeon's daughter was the only saint in their crew but boy, I was wrong. Not one child in this drama seems to be likeable minus Anna.

Side things that bothered me in this drama:
-If Hera palace is really that huge, shouldn't they have more residents...? I'd expect to see more than 4 couples in that tiny club

-Kinda funny for the writer chose classical singing as the kids' choice of competition though. lol wouldn't majority just go into kpop or become soloists. I know half their kids are being forced into this path, but not everyone is gene-d with  superior vocal skills for this. There's like 5+ kids+the tutor+Ro Na and they all happen to want to go into classical singing...

-If the anna lee's the same age as the twins and also in middle school, it's kinda questionable how she even got hired in the first place. I assumed the rich hire children from other rich through word of mouth or etc. and I would expect the sophisticated meticulous soyeon to do a background check on her but she somehow let that slip? (Makjangs are notorious for using background checks and dna tests on everyone suspect) Anna's choice of wig disguise is no different from her regular haircut. They're acting like it's the iconic sailormoon reveal.

This is truly makjang, but at a frustrating level diminishing it no different than the ones I watch in daily and weekends. Great cast but execution could be better.

I think I'll still stay though but two seasons will be a rough patch. It's been so long that I've written such an angsty summary of a drama because my head's splitting apart thinking about what I just watched.

I agree 100% with everything that you've observed regarding the first two episodes. Episode One left me lifted, knowing that Eugene's character had her hackles up, and was ready to fight tooth and nail to bring these people down. Anything, and everything, went completely to hell in episode two. The parents, and their horrible spawn are not at all redeemable, at this point. And this is before the eventual tragedy that we know the tutor will face. I'm still here for Eugene, but it's going to be a painful ride to the top of that penthouse. :sweatingbullets:

  15. Thank you@larus. The first time I read it, I thought that the baby was a girl, but wasn't sure after reading it again. I like the idea of a sister and friend for Lani to pass her knowledge onto, just like she does for her mom.  I wish that we had a supermom show like they do for the men. I'd love to see Yoon Ji's children meeting up with Eugene's two girls and the little ones currently on the show. I really miss seeing Yoon Ji in dramas though. It looks like she is going to be really busy for quite some time, though.

  16. Goo Hye Sun is a part of that golden age of Korean actresses that includes the likes of herself, Kong Hyo Jin, Song Hye Kyo, Lee Bo YoungLee Yuri, and so many others (as mentioned by @gelisiacarras, in the above blog.) Outside of the controversy (which may hurt her because production companies have shown a huge tendency to bend to public sentiment) with Goo Hye Sun's ability to shape-shift and play such a variety of roles would seem unlikely she would lose her leading lady status. A proven entity, she has shown throughout her career that she is quite capable of carrying any production she appears in.  Despite the repeated, organized, and contrived efforts, by a jaded minority bent upon submarining her career (for various reasons: jealousy, avarice, low self-esteem, etc.), she remains quite popular and is seen in an admirable light by her contemporaries, friends, and within the industry.  I cannot imagine a huge talent like hers dying on the vine or taking a backseat at this relatively young age or even later on down the road. Her beauty, talent, and reputation demand that she remain the focal point of productions, unless she chooses to move down the list in order to change her image or further  challenge her craft. She hasn't played any dark characters or femme fatales yet and she certainly has the goods to pull it off. In just six episodes of her aborted drama, You Are Too Much, we got a glimpse of her stepping outside of her usual role hinting at a possible move, for her, into deeper waters. In my estimation, there is no role that could be offered to her that is beyond her scope. Surely the industry knows this. If it is her wish to return to acting. I predict that she will be back in a big way...
