Synopsis

The main character, Hong Gil Dong, is Minister Hong's son born of the maidservant Chun-Seom, during Sejong's reign in Joseon dynasty, in the capital of Seoul. Gil Dong practiced Taoist magic since a young age and would someday become a splendid individual, but due to his illegitimate birth he carried the grudge of not being able to address his father and siblings. His family feared Gil Dong's unique skills would be the root of calamity someday, thus they hired assassins to get rid of Gil Dong. Upon escaping danger, Gil Dong left to wander and became a bandit leader. Gil Dong schemed to seize treasures from Hae-In-Sa, and afterwards with the name Hwal-Bin-Dang (army saving the poor), with skills and Taoist magic, he seized fortunes from the corrupt officials all over the country and gave them to the poor people, but did not take a penny from the common citizens. Gil Dong captured treasures from the governor of Ham-Kyeong and the governor submitted a report to the royal court. Thus, Hong Gil Dong became a wanted grand offender by the criminal capturing branch of the government. Even the top police general, Lee Heup, tried to capture Hong Gil Dong, but Lee was only made a fool. Despite the King's order to capture him, no one could escape from suffering by Gil Dong's magic of ho-pung-hwan-woo (act of calling for wind and rain) and dun-gap-jang-sin (act of disappearance to hide onself). The royal court then appeased to Minister Hong, and with support by Gil Dong's brother In Hyung, they petitioned to make Gil Dong the Minister of Army and War. Gil Dong came to Seoul to become the head of army and war ministry. Later on, Gil-Dong left his homeland toward Nam-Kyeong, but discovered the nation of Yul-Do, which was scenic with mountain and streams. He conquered the goblins and saved the beautiful woman, who were captured as hostages, and became the king of the Yul-Do nation. Then, upon hearing news of his father's death, he returned to his native land and mourned for 3 years. He later returned to Yul-Do nation and managed his nation well.

Hong Gil Dong - (Kang Ji Hwan)

An illegitimate child born from a servant. His birth mother died as soon as she gave birth to him.
At the age of 3, he showed signs of being a genius by memorizing the Analects of Confucius & Book of Mencius without anyone teaching him. Because of that, he became the target of jealously and caution. He was treated as a black sheep in his home. His father neglects him, his stepmother treats him like a bug, and on top of that, he was also being tortured by others. His brother, In Hyung, recieved lots of love from his mother, Mrs. Kim, while Gil Dong grew up lonely without a shield.


Heo Yi Nok - (Sung Yu Ri)

Her true identity is that she's the only daughter of Minister Ryu Geun Chan.
Without knowing her true identity & past, she grew up as the granddaughter of Heo No In, a physician and a crook.
Without any reason, she always dresses like a guy, wearing her grandfather's clothes, just because guy clothes are comfortable.


Lee Chang Hui (Whe) - (Jang Geun Suk)

King Sun's only child.
His brother, Kwang Whe, who is Choi Sook Bin's son, was already crowned prince and then became King.
Chang Whe was sentenced to death. With his mother's sacrifice, he and court lady Noh were able to escape. To everyone, he is the dead prince.
He and court lady Noh make a living as a merchant, while waiting to make a comeback. He lives each day waiting to take revenge.


Teacher Hae Myung - (Jung Eun Pyo)

Gil Dong's teacher.
I think Gil Dong learned Taoist magic from him.
When young Gil Dong went to learn martial arts from him, he tortured Gil Dong a lot so Gil Dong doesn't respect him.


Heo No In - (Jung Gyu Soo)

Yi Nok's grandfather.
Sometimes, he is a physician and sometimes he is a crook.
Eventhough he is shallow, he is a nice man and sincerely loves Yi Nok.


Court lady Noh - (Choi Ran)

Chang Whe's biggest supporter.
She put her life on the line to protect Chang Whe, the queen's only son.
While trying to save Chang Whe from the fire, half of her body got burned.
Although she has a dark side, the reason why she is living is so that she can get back Chang Whe's existence and throne.


Minister Hong (Hong Seo Hyun) - (Kim Yong Woo)

Gil Dong's father.
Although he was aware of Gil Dong's abilites, his fate of being an illegitimate child was something Minister Hong felt bad about it but at the same time cursed.
He serves Kwang Whe and Kwang Whe trusts him too.
Eventhough he kills 10 people, he is a character that will have charisma left.


Lee Kwang Hui (Whe) - (Jo Hee Bong)

Chosun's current King.
Choi Sook Bin's son. Since there was no prince, he had no choice but to become the Crown Prince.
When King Sun gets a son, Chang Whe, at an old age from a young Queen, Kwang Whe feels that his position as the Crown Prince is threatened.


Seo Eun Hye - (Kim Ri Na)

Minister Seo's only daughter.
She is like an ice princess. She is smart and has a good education.
Because she's a girl, she knows that she can't accomplish anything and that she must go through an arranged marriage someday, which she really dislikes.
She knows that Minister Hong's oldest son, In Hyung, likes her but she is more interested in that family's illegitimate son, Gil Dong.


Hong In Hyung - (Kim Jae Seung)

Gil Dong's half brother.
The oldest in the Hong Family. When compared to Gil Dong, he has a sense of inferiority because he ends up looking like just a normal person.
Always nervous and weak, he is scared of his father and is a mama's boy, listening to everything his mother says.
He loves Eun Hye.


Shim Soo Geun - (Park Sang Wok)

Chosun's best Casanova.
Although he has a naive side and has a quiet temper, he does have a good body.
While he is simple, he also has strong friendships.


Jung Mal Nyeo - (Cha Hyun Jung)

Chosun's best sexy lady.
She likes to drink and her head spins are fast.
She doesn't really care about her life. But she is exclusive towards Soo Geun.


Yeon - (Moon Se Yun)

He has a personality like the oldest son. He is always prudent and believes in Gil Dong.
He has a lot of talents so there is nothing that he can't make.
He invents new items and can also copy something once he sees it.


Gom - (Maeng Sae Chang)

He is the bandit group's post man.
Because he likes Gil Dong and respects him, he tries to copy what Gil Dong does.
Yun cherishes him like his own biological brother. Gom trusts Yun but treats Soo Geun differently.

Eun Hye's father.
He is the core of Chosun's power.
He cherishes and cares for his daughter, Eun Hye, a lot. He is a mania for Chinese goods.

The palace's hidden power.
Although he always stays quietly next to Kwang Whe, he doesn't think Kwang Whe should be King and that the throne should be given back to Chang Whe.

haha antm, i dont care about the cast, haha all i care about is that its another Hong Sister production, haha i wonder what they did this time for the screenplay, i have a feeling they're going to do that modern twist thing like they did for Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang, since there is a similar guy name Hong Gil Dong in history, haha should be interesting, haha they have yet to disappoint me ! Or maybe they do try to stick to the story about Hong Gi Dong and do a period drama, either way im watching to see what they bring to the table.
