Kim Rae Won Changes from His Adorable Image and Plays a Thug in “Mr. Socrates”

Popular star Kim Rae Won plays a bad richard simmons role in his new movie “Mr. Socrates”. His 180 degree change in image reveals clearly his strong will to show people that he’s an actor rather than a star.

“Can he play a thug role well?” This is a question out of suspicion. Kim Rae Won’s face is almost perfect as a sculpture. Since he became popular with “Attic Cat”, viewers have always loved his adorable image. He’s cute and playful. In the TV series “Love Story in Harvard”, Kim Rae Won was still a good-looking and straight college student.

But in “Mr. Socrates” scheduled for premiere on Nov 10, he’s changed to a hateful thug, Ku Dong Hyuck. He extinguished a cigarette with his tongue, swear words continuously spilling out of his mouth. He cheated his father who’s in jail to get his money; he’s totally no respect for any moral values.

“It’s like I’ve been always eating cooked meat and this is the first time I taste raw meat. It’s a very new and strange experience.”

Kim Rae Won has always been very serious with his work. He’s famous for studying his scripts so thoroughly. This time he has thrown his whole self into the filming sets. He’s been keeping this Ku Dong Hyuck feeling throughout the 2 months of filming. When he didn’t feel right, he’d stop working, for 2 hours, 3 hours, just to discuss with the director.

Finally, the movie is well liked. Response from the previews is good. Suspicious viewers revealed their very surprised looks. Everyone is surprised by a Kim Rae Won who looks 100% like a thug with very convincing expressions and behavior.

The lines of the scene when he said bad things to an old man in the underground train are 100% on site inspiration. The one he extinguished the cigarette with is tongue was not rehearsed but shot right away. During the process when KDH was trained by the criminal ring to become a cop, the scene that he’s tortured is so vivid. He was hung upside down from the ceiling and dumped into water. The crew kept asking him to use a substitute actor for this but he insisted on finishing that himself. In the middle of the story, KDH had a 1-to-many fight with gangsters. In all the fast punching and kicking scenes, he did those all by himself with no stunt.

“If I’m obsessed with one thing, I’ll do it with my life.” For his physical training, he spent 5-6 hours a day. He started playing golf 3 weeks ago and he’s reached the 90 strokes standard. As he’s been living alone since 14, his cooking skills have standards above people who take cooking as a hobby. When he goes fishing, he can make sashimi with the fish he’s caught on site. He always go to 淩晨 seafood market to buy high quality seafood to make dishes. Sometimes just to buy some rare mushroom (松茸), he goes to the village markets for a walk.

His best cooking skill is shown in the “soft stewed soup” (a soup cooked with squids and other ingredients). According to his manager who’s tasted that, he can make it with the least ingredients and it has a light but very good taste. KRW’s acting is just like this soup, without any pretence, and with addition to his sincerity, his image on screen impressed viewers strongly with a lasting charm. Pleased viewers tend to think of his performance again and again.

미스터 소크라테스 (Mr. Socrates) has become the recipient of one of the strangest records in Korean film History. There isn't a single female character in the film. There's a few extras and really minor characters, but not a single woman with a line of dialogue. Choi Jin-Won [Director and Writer of the film] said: "Since I don't know women really well, I wanted to tell a man's story." But it could have been different: people on the set joked that the atmosphere without women was a little too downbeat, so they wanted to get some female characters in anyway. But at the end, Producer Choi Yong-Gi said that since it was a world the director didn't know about, he would have preferred to go as planned, without women, lest it all became an exercise in awkward moments. So here's our new, unpleasant little record: no women on screen. I'm sure someone will take the joke, and do the other way around. Maybe a parody of 실미도 (Silmido) with all women...

Kim Rae Won: No Reasons For Not Marrying a Japanese Woman

Kim Rae Won’s Japanese Fans Meeting was held at 7 p.m. in Lotte Hotel, Seoul on Nov 6.

About 180 fans from Japan and 20 reporters attended this fans meeting.

The part of the event which attracts the greatest attention is the Q&A section when fans asked about KRW’s marriage and his thoughts on Japanese women.

Questions from the fans: “What do you think of Japanese women?” “How about marrying one?”

KRW answered, “Though I haven’t thought about this, I’ll say I have no problem with that. Because of the language barrier however, I haven’t any chance to get in touch with any Japanese ladies yet. Anyway, there shouldn’t be any reasons for not marrying a Japanese woman.” His answer was followed with shouts and cheers from fans.

KRW, facing such questions with a tendered look, added, “Hope somebody will introduce one to me.” And this resulted in an uproar and wild applaud.
