HK FilMart: Hefty Pre-sales Titles Head Showbox Slate

Korean production and distribution combine Showbox will unwrap a slew of big-budget titles for pre-sale at this week’s Hong Kong FilMart convention and rights market.

“Assassination,” currently in post-production, reunites director Choi Dong-hoon with several members of his team from 2012 megahit “The Thieves.” Returning stars include Gianna Jun (“The Berlin File”) and Lee Jung-jae (“Big Match”), matched with Ha Jung-woo, star of “The Chaser.” They are joined by veteran supporting actors Oh Dal-soo and Cho Jin-woong, who have recently added record breakers “Ode to My Father” and “Roaring Currents,” respectively, to their credits.

Veteran actor Song Kang-ho (“The Attorney”) and young talent Yoo Ah-in (“Thread of Lies”) head the cast of “The Throne,” which also launches at FilMart. Set in the Joseon dynasty, the period drama features crown prince Sado, who is locked up in a rice chest because of his father’s political decision. Period drama specialist Lee Joon-ik (“King and the Clown”) is set as director.

Two other titles got launches at last month’s European Film Market in Berlin: crime drama “The Classified File,” directed by Kwak Kyung-taek (“Friend”), and “Inside Men,” starring Lee Byung-hun, who is mired in scandal at home but has a booming Hollywood career, with credits including the upcoming “Terminator: Genisys” as well as “Red 2” and “G.I. Joe.”

Lee’s agency BH confirmed that he is expected next to star in Film Bridge’s legal thriller “Beyond Deceit” alongside Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins and Malin Ackerman. Both “Classified” and “Inside Menn” are now in post-production and set for release later this year.

Showbox’s lineup also includes completed titles such as the local box office hit “Detective K: Secret of the Lost Island” and Yoo Ha’s “Gangnam Blues,” both of which have already sold to a swath of territories in and outside Asia.

'Assassination' poster unveiled

The overseas promotional poster of upcoming crime film "Assassination," starring actress Jun Ji-hyun, has been unveiled.

The film stars Jun in the lead role alongside male actors Ha Jung-woo and Lee Jung-jae as coconspirators and partners in crime.

"Assassination" is set against 1930s Shanghai and Seoul, which was under Japanese colonial rule from 1907 until the end of World War II.

Jun plays freedom fighter and nationalist sniper An Ok-yoon in a change of roles from her more lively and sensual choices in the past.

Jun is dressed in a notably unrevealing outfit, presenting an austere image while holding a rifle, in the Western-style film poster revealed earlier this week.

Her costar Lee plays gang leader and Korean provisional government agent Yeom Seok-jin, while actor Ha plays contract killer Hawaii Pistol.

Director Choi Dong-hun previously worked alongside Jun, a popular actress and celebrated Korean beauty, in the 2012 crime blockbuster "The Thieves," which he both directed and cowrote.

"Assassination," which is in the second half of production, is set for release in Korea this summer.

Assassination international movie poster

Upcoming South Korean movie ‘Assassination’ which is led by Ha Jung Woo, Jun Ji Hyun, and Lee Jung Jae, and is the 5th work by director Choi Dong Hoon, has recently unveiled its international poster.

In the poster, Ha Jung WooJun Ji Hyun, and Lee Jung Jae are seen wearing 30s styled outfits, and their expressionless faces brought out the tragic mood of that period.

Jun Ji Hyun takes on the role of An Ok Yoon who is the leader of the assassin group, and an elite sniper. The role is a departure from Jun Ji Hyun’s usual bubbly image, as she is seen displaying a profound deep gaze with her eyes, and shows the strong desire to see Korea’s independence.

Lee Jung Jae plays Yeom Seok Jin who works as an agent from the interim government, and is the brains behind the Assassination as he gives orders to An Ok Yoon’s group. Ha Jung Woo meanwhile plays a contract killer within the group called Hawaii Pistol, and will kill anybody for 3000 dollars.

‘Assassination’ takes place in Shanghai and Kyungsun during the 1930’s, and tells the story of independence fighters, agent from interim government, and contract killers coming together to carry out an assassination plot against the imperialist Japanese traitors.

The movie will open in cinemas this summer.

Actress Lee Yu Bi was recently asked whether having a famous mom improved her career chances. The actress who had roles in the drama "Pinocchio" and the film "Twenty" is also the daughter of famous actress Kyun Mi Ri, who appeared in such hit dramas as "Jumong" and "Queen Inhyun."

When Lee Yu Bi was interviewed by OSEN, she said she does not mind the fact that interviewers often bring up the subject of her mom. The implication is that she might not have landed such roles if she had not had a well-connected mom.

She's not offended and figures she will eventually be judged on her own merits.

"I don't really mind it," she said. "It's true that I am my mother's daughter. But if I am diligent and consistently do my best, as time passes I think people will naturally accept me on my own merits. I think that people around me care more about labels than I do."

Having famous parents may definitely improve your chances of landing role but if you don't have the talent to pull off that role, you probably won't continue to land them.

Another actress who got her start because of an acting parent is Jang Na Ra. The star of "Fated To Love You" and "Mr. Baek" is the daughter of Ju Ho Sang, a theater and film actor and a producer. She first appeared in a play with her dad when she was in elementary school and her first drama role was also with her dad. But she had plenty of talent and continued acting to become a star in her own right.

Ha Jung Woo, who appears in "The Berlin File," The Terror Live" and "Fasten Your Seatbelt" is the son of actor Kim Yong Gun, who is far from retired. Kim Yong Gun had roles in "A Secret Love Affair" and "Doctor Stranger." Kim was the actor who posed for the portrait of Ji Sung's grandfather in "Kill Me, Heal Me."

Brother Cha Hyun Woo is also an actor. He was last seen in the drama "The Great Seer."

In the case of Choi Min Soo, who played prosecutor Moon Hee Man in "Pride and Prejudice," you could say acting is his family's business. He is the son of two acting parents and two of his grandparents were also actors.  His dad was actor Choi Moo Ryong and his mom was actress Kang Hyo Shil. His grandparents are actor and director Kang Hong Shik and his grandmother is actress Jeon Ok.
