Synopsis  Korean Movie ALIVE
One day Jun Woo wakes up and sees a note left by his mother that his parents are gone for a while so he is alone at home. Jun Woo is a gamer who is quite well known and used to broadcast his games live, that morning he found comments discussing news on TV.

He rushed to turn on the TV and found that his apartment complex had been filled with panic because a mysterious virus infection was spreading there. The origin of this infection that is transmitted through bites and cuts is unknown, but the number of infected people who exhibit cannibalism continues to increase. Meanwhile, unstable internet and telephone signals made it difficult for him to communicate with his family. In the midst of despair several times he recorded videos and uploaded them, and shared photos as a signal to ask for help.

Meanwhile there was only a meager supply of food and drinking water, on the 7th day the tap water went off which made him even more desperate. On the 15th day he missed his family so much that he was so sad after awakening from his hallucinations. Jun Woo tries to find a signal when he gets a call from his mother, but he hears the voices of his mother, father, and brother screaming in panic as they face the infected creatures. This really made Jun Woo shaken and so angry that he decided to hang himself.

On the 20th day, in the midst of his suicide, he found a laser beam entering his room which made him cancel the suicide. Jun Woo finds out the whereabouts of Kim Yu Bin ( Park Shin Hye ) who still survives in the apartment unit opposite. They started communicating.

Because food supplies were really running low, Jun Woo ventured into his neighbor's apartment, took some useful items until he got a walki-talki which he then gave to Yu Bin through the rope that connected their apartment. Their communication is smoother, to the point of planning a rescue mission together.

Realizing their increasingly unsafe situation, based on Yu Bin's observations, he invited Jun Woo to move to another place, namely the 8th floor of Jun Woo's apartment.

In this action they must pass through a crowd of infected creatures, at this critical time they are saved by an apartment resident who is still alive. With trepidation they accepted the person's help until they were given a meal. But that's all, it turns out that the middle-aged man has an ulterior motive. Yu Bin, who was still alert, realized that something was strange, but then he fell unconscious and so did Yun Woo.

Yu Bin was put into a room which turned out to be the figure of the man's wife who had been infected. He deliberately did that to feed his wife. Yun Woo finally woke up trying to save Yu Bin.

Because the atmosphere was suddenly quiet inside, this man opened the door lock to see the situation inside, but it turned out that Yu Bin managed to survive and in the end his wife attacked the man. Yu Bin also ventured to shoot them.

It wasn't long before the sound of helicopters was heard near the apartment complex. The two of them were desperate to get out to the roof of the building, of course a group of infected creatures were still chasing them.

When they got to the roof they didn't find the helicopter and started screaming desperately for help. The horde of infected creatures enters the roof, with Jun Woo's last line of defense shooting at him. It was a touching moment, after a rescue helicopter appeared behind them, and they were successfully evacuated.

Korean Movie Review  ALIVE
As the title suggests, this film shows an interesting storyline that focuses on the survival efforts of Yun Woo and Yu Bin, isolated in their apartment. The acting skills of experienced players, namely Yoo Ah In and Park Shin Hye , have definitely met expectations.

The realistic portrayal of the characters, especially when Jun Woo has not met Yu Bin, is enough to make the audience feel how sad, worried, and frustrated he feels.

Although there are not many scenes that show assassins against infected creatures, the tension can continue to be felt in the scenes of hiding their existence in order to survive. The character of the infected creature is also described in great detail and the ferocity is sure to succeed in making the audience feel horrified. The theme song and sound effects that fill this film also make the atmosphere even more tense.

Not the first Korean film that tells about the struggle against zombies, previously there was the 2016 film Train To Busan, starring Gong Yoo and Ma Dong Seok and the 2018 film Rampant , starring Hyun Bin, but it was still fun to watch and even though it was released during a pandemic, in fact Alive can prove to be able to reach  1 million viewers in just 5 days since its release. Recommended to watch on Friday night.

The Best Korean Dramas on Netflix Right Now

UPDATED MAR 12, 2022

The world of Korean dramas is a strange and beautiful place. The South Korean entertainment industry is slowly growing to worldwide dominance, as Kpop, Korean movies like Parasite and Minari, and Korean television series take the world by storm.

The term Korean drama, or Kdrama, refers to almost any South Korean fictional television series, no matter the subject or genre. That includes comedy, romance, sci-fi, horror, you name it. Most of these television series are based on webcomics, a form of storytelling similar to comics that originated in South Korea. You should generally expect a love story no matter the genre (save maybe horror), and the same actors are in pretty much everything. Fair warning, almost all Korean dramas have quite outlandish premises, but that’s honestly what makes them so good. You just have to learn how to accept the strange and unexpected and go along for the ride.

Recently, Netflix has become the go-to place to find the best Kdrama offerings for US audiences, with many shows being labeled as Netflix Originals. This partnership, as well as the overall shift to streaming, has also changed the business and structure of Kdramas, as previously, pretty much all Kdramas were around 16 episodes long and one season only. Although Korea and their media is still generally conservative, the international audience is definitely shifting perspectives to be more inclusive and representative of all types of people.

In order to help you jump headfirst into this new and expanding area of television, here are 28 of the best Korean dramas available to watch on Netflix, both original and not.

Editor's Note: This list was most recently updated on March 2022 to include The Silent Sea, The Heirs, and All of Us Are Dead.

The Heirs

Directors: Kang Shin-hyo, Boo Sung-chul

Writer: Kim Eun-sook

Cast: Lee Min-ho, Park Shin-hye, Kim Woo-bin, Kim Ji-won, Kang Min-hyuk, Kang Ha-neul

While it may not be the freshest take on K-Drama, this star studded cast created one of the most watched Korean dramas on the planet. Essentially a Cinderella story (or even a Gossip Girl story), Park Shin-hye plays Cha Eun-sang, a regular girl who gets mixed up in the business of a bunch of heirs to rich and affluent families. Chief among them is the Kims. As the daughter of the live-in housekeeper, she lives at their home and is enrolled into their high school. There she meets Kim Tan (Lee Min-ho), the scion of the family, and the two fall in love despite the odds. Both Lee and Park were coming off of big projects at the time The Heirs came out and this quickly became a massively popular show. A perfect time capsule of what Korean dramas were trying to achieve back during the 2010s. — Therese Lacson

Memories of the Alhambra

Writer: Song Jae-jung

Director: Ahn Gil-ho

Cast: Hyun Bin, Park Shin-hye, Park Hoon, Chanyeol

A true amalgam of genres, Memories of the Alhambra takes place mainly in Granada, Spain with a Korean cast. A science-fiction drama of sorts, the series follows the CEO of an investment company, Yoo Jin-woo (Hyun Bin), who travels to Spain in search of the creator of an AR game in development that feels way too real. When game and reality start to blur and someone is killed, Jin-woo, with the help of the developer’s sister, Jung Hee-joo (Park Shin-hye), must find the bug in the game and fix it before more people die.

Memories of the Alhambra is a breath of fresh air for Kdramas due to its setting and innovative premise. While at times the story lacks sense, the concept and execution are spot-on, and honestly, you can’t help but fall in love with Hyun Bin.
