On July 10, SBS’s upcoming drama “Good Partner” held a press conference with director Kim Garam and actors Jang Nara, Nam Ji Hyun, Kim Jun Han, and Block B’s P.O.

 

Written by an actual divorce attorney, “Good Partner” will depict the humorous struggles of two very different divorce lawyers: Cha Eun Kyung (Jang Nara), a star lawyer for whom divorce is her calling, and Han Yu Ri (Nam Ji Hyun), a rookie lawyer who is still new to divorce.

 

Director Kim Garam described Jang Nara by saying, “She is truly intimidating and has an old-fashioned aura. That’s an unflattering way to describe it, but she captivates everyone with her strong presence. She exudes tremendous charisma, which amplifies the highs and lows of the character. Just watching Jang Nara in this drama will leave you breathless.”

 

 

Jang Nara will star in the drama as Cha Eun Kyung, a straightforward and sharp-witted veteran lawyer known for her efficiency-driven approach. Newlywed Jang Nara explained her decision to take on the role by stating, “When I first read the script at home, my husband read it together with me. His strong recommendation influenced my choice. He has a significant stake in it.”

 

She went on to shyly share, “While seeing the sad or unjust stories [depicted in the drama], I sometimes wonder, ‘Why do people get married?’ But then I return home after work and affectionately ask my husband, ‘You’re back?’ It’s like that.”

 

When asked if her views on divorce shifted during filming, Jang Nara replied, “Avoiding divorce would be great if possible, but I now understand that it is sometimes necessary. Life can bring discord, and some relationships are toxic. I’ve come to see divorce as serving a practical function and something that needs to be a readily available [option].”

 

When asked which lawyer she would hire if she were getting divorced, Jang Nara responded, “I wouldn’t necessarily want to meet the character of Cha Eun Kyung. But if I were getting a divorce, I’d want Cha Eun Kyung to handle my case.”

Meanwhile, Nam Ji Hyun will play the role of Han Yu Ri, a bulldozer rookie lawyer who has no tolerance for injustice.

 

Describing her chemistry with Jang Nara, she said, “As a new lawyer, [my character] and Jang Nara’s character have different stances on cases. We argue based on our respective logic, and sometimes one of us prevails. Initially, we clash a lot, but over time, we begin to influence each other. I think it will be fun to watch that process unfold.”

On July 14, the new drama starring Jang Nara and Nam Ji Hyun enjoyed a significant jump in viewership for its second episode. According to Nielsen Korea, “Good Partner” took first place in its time slot across all channels with an average nationwide rating of 8.7 percent.

Finally happened to watch episode 1 and 2. And I just love it. The intro, the humour within it and the sound effects are too good. Jang Nara and Nam Ji Hyun are so on point with their respected characters. Jang Nara looks so elegant in suits. She seriously smells like a real business woman. I haven't seen any drama of Nam Ji Hyun before but she really caught my attention towards her.

 

Really enjoyed the premiere. Can't wait for the next episode. The fact that the drama is written by a real divorce lawyer is keeping me most intriguing. Let's see what Cha Eun Kyung has for her cheating husband under her sleeves.

Good Partner tells the story of star divorce lawyer Cha Eun Kyung (Jang Na Ra) and rookie lawyer Han Yoo Ri (Nam Ji Hyun). The show portrays the dilemmas people experience when they face unexpected breakups that were not part of their life plans, and aims to deliver empathy and catharsis as it follows divorce lawyers striving to make the best choices in the harsh game of life.

Good Partner: Episodes 1-2

Jang Nara and Nam Ji-hyun butt heads as divorce attorney colleagues with very different ideals in this legal workplace drama. While I wouldn’t call it fresh or unique in terms of legal dramas, it was a solid premiere that hints at more interesting things to come from our leading ladies and their dynamic.

 
EPISODES 1-2

 

Going into this drama, I was most excited about seeing Jang Nara and Nam Ji-hyun together, and they do not disappoint. We get the expected jaded sunbae and idealistic hoobae dynamic, but thanks to our charismatic leading ladies, they feel like real people rather than just stereotypes.

CHA EUN-KYUNG (Jang Nara<) is the ace attorney at major law firm Daejeong and has handled high profile cases that have made her a household name. She’s tough, laser focused, and unforgiving. She’s so exacting that the team is hemorrhaging new hires. Enter HAN YURI (Nam Ji-hyun), the most recent fresh-faced newbie attorney who gets stuck on the divorce team. It’s not exactly her dream position as she’s never thought highly of divorce law, which Eun-kyung knows since Yuri voiced that opinion in Eun-kyung’s law seminar a year ago. Not exactly a winning first impression on either side. Now, to motivate Yuri, Eun-kyung stipulates she can transfer to the corporate law team if she wins ten divorce cases.

 

It’s trial by fire for Yuri from day one. Her first client is PARK JONG-SHIK whose wife accused him of cheating and wants a divorce. He claims she’s always been excessively jealous, which his adult son corroborates, but he won’t agree to a divorce. Yuri believes him right away and is determined to get the divorce denied, which Eun-kyung scoffs at as naïve.

Naturally, Yuri is naïve as this is her first position out of law school. She’s not prepared when the plaintiff springs text messages corroborating the affair in court or for the vitriol she receives from the plaintiff and her family. She’s also not prepared for having to make ridiculous, obviously untrue arguments on behalf of clients to win a case.

While Eun-kyung disagrees with Yuri’s approach to the case, she doesn’t step in or override Yuri. One thing I like is that despite Eun-kyung being harsh, she’s not mean. She doesn’t deride Yuri or make her life difficult for no reason – she just has high expectations. But you get the idea Eun-kyung wants her hoobaes to succeed, even if few make the cut. She seems like the type who usually can’t be bothered to train a baby lawyer, but she could be a great mentor if she decided to be.

 

Yuri turns out to be a fast learner and thinks well on her feet, winning her first case and impressing Eun-kyung (not that she shows it). The trouble is Yuri isn’t sure she wants to be good at this. She feels like she’s ruining lives by defending cheaters and coldly focusing on earning money regardless of the people who are hurt. And she has some experience being on the other side: her father left her and her mother for his mistress.

Yuri’s idealism and lack of enthusiasm for the job worry her sunbaes who are tired of losing all their newbies, so young attorney JEON EUN-HO (Pyo Ji-hoon) works extra hard to befriend her. Meanwhile, attorney JUNG WOO-JIN (Kim Joon-han) – the only person not afraid of Eun-kyung – encourages her to go easy on the Yuri. And rightfully so because Yuri has already started typing up a resignation letter.

The newly released making-of video highlights the professionalism of the actors on set as they navigate challenging conditions. Ahead of a crucial court scene, Jang Nara meticulously practices her lengthy dialogue. When the cameras start rolling, she momentarily stumbles over her lines, but quickly recovers on her next attempt after apologizing for the slip-up. Despite the seriousness of the scene, the off-camera camaraderie is evident among the actors.

Later, Nam Ji Hyun helpfully supports Jang Nara during her close-up shots in their outdoor scenes by staying in character behind the camera.

Meanwhile, during a pivotal dinner scene where Nam Ji Hyun’s character seeks advice from P.O’s character, filming is repeatedly interrupted by loud noises like passing bikes and bus announcements. Both actors handle the interruptions humorously, persisting until they nail the scene.

If you thought divorce was just a matter of signing papers, think again. The premiere episodes of “Good Partner” gave us a taste of the complicated process of divorce, which is rarely a black-and-white situation. Jang Nara stars as Cha Eun Kyung, a famous divorce attorney and mother with unsurpassed intuition, while Nam Ji Hyun plays Han Yu Ri, a naive new hire with a deep dislike of divorce. As they work together, their contrasting outlooks on divorce challenge each other’s views on cases.

A lot happens in the first two episodes, including heartbreaking divorces and a dose of shocking betrayals—here are four unanswered questions that will be keeping us at the edge of our seats until the next episodes air.

1. Will Han Yu Ri stay on the Divorce Team?

The show starts with rookie attorney Han Yu Ri excited to be hired at Daejeong, a major law firm. She walks into the office on her first day, thinking she’s been assigned to the Corporate Team, her first pick.

However, her smile disappears when she realizes she’s been assigned to the Divorce Team, the team she despises the most. It’s later revealed that Han Yu Ri dealt with her own father leaving her and her mother for someone else, so her dislike of divorce makes sense.

When she meets senior divorce attorney Cha Eun Kyung, Yu Ri tells her there must have been a mistake and asks how she can get on the Corporate Team. Eun Kyung tells her she has to win 10 cases in a row, and afterwards she’ll let the CEO know that Yu Ri wishes to change teams. But by the end of the first episode, after winning a case where her client was actually at fault, Yu Ri is already drafting her resignation letter!

Will she stick it out and try to win 10 cases or submit her resignation before that?

2. Why hasn’t Eun Kyung done anything about her husband’s affair?

Probably the biggest shock so far was the devastating cliffhanger of episode 1: Yu Ri catches Eun Kyung’s husband Kim Ji Sang (Ji Seung Hyun) sharing an intimate moment with Eun Kyung’s coworker (shamelessly at Eun Kyung’s office, no less).

On the previous episode of “Good Partner,” Han Yu Ri once again became overly invested in a client’s situation and failed to maintain appropriate boundaries while working on a case. But just when Han Yu Ri had decided to leave the firm, Cha Eun Kyung made her a surprising proposal, asking the rookie lawyer to personally handle her own divorce.

 

In newly released stills from the drama’s next episode, Cha Eun Kyung’s gaze is cold as ice as she faces off with her longtime assistant Choi Sa Ra (Han Jae Yi). Up until now, Cha Eun Kyung has pretended not to know about Choi Sa Ra’s affair with her husband, but the charade appears to be over now that she has made up her mind to get a divorce.

 

 

Meanwhile, another set of stills hints at further turbulence awaiting Cha Eun Kyung at work. Her boss Oh Dae Gyu (Jung Jae Sung) seeks her out and angrily confronts her while pointing at the tablet in his hand, suggesting he’s just read something that he doesn’t like.

 

Seemingly trying to defuse the situation, Jung Woo Jin (Kim Jun Han) steps in front of Oh Dae Gyu to block his path, while Han Yu Ri and Jung Eun Ho (Block B’s P.O) look shocked at the noisy scene unfolding before them.

 

 

The “Good Partner” production team teased, “After making up her mind and undergoing a fierce transformation, Cha Eun Kyung will officially declare war on Kim Ji Sang and Choi Sa Ra. Please look forward to the ‘womance’ between Cha Eun Kyung, who has decided to get a divorce, and Han Yu Ri, who will be fighting together with her.”
