How ‘The Killer’s Shopping Mall’ Spinoff K-Drama Will Parallel ‘The Killer’s Shopping List’

Lee Dong-wook and Kim Hye-joon will star in 'The Killer's Shopping Mall' as an uncle and niece duo. The spinoff K-drama has some parallels to 'The Killer's Shopping List.'
Published on January 18, 2023

In April 2022, tvN released the comedy mystery thriller K-drama The Killer’s Shopping List. Actor Lee Kwang-soo starred as Ahn Dae-sung, who helps his parents run the local supermarket after failing the civil service exams more than once. He soon starts to see clues of a murder. It was announced The Killer’s Shopping Mall would be an upcoming spinoff of the K-drama starring Lee Dong-wook and Kim Hye-joon.

‘The Killer’s Shopping List’ has Dae-sung noticed clues to a neighborhood murder

As a child, Dae-sung had impeccable memorization skills. But, as an adult, he still manages to fail the civil service exam for the past three years. While unable to find a job, he helps his parents run their local neighborhood supermarket. The K-drama takes a turn when there is a murder in the neighborhood. Dae-sung’s girlfriend, Ah-hee (Seolhyun), is a police officer and finds a market receipt at the crime scene.

As her only lead, she ropes in Dae-sung and his mother to help her uncover the killer. Dae-sung uses the receipt to help determine who could have bought the items. He begins to suspect everyone close to him, while the biggest clue of them all was under their noses the entire time. But as Dae-sung furthers his investigation, he too becomes a suspect when he appears at the right place at the wrong time.

The K-drama is a fun mystery to solve alongside the main characters. The Killer’s Shopping List is based on a novel of the same name by Kang Ji-young. Soompi reported The Killer’s Shopping Mall K-drama will also be based on Kang’s novel but serve as a spinoff to the 2022 K-drama.

‘The Killer’s Shopping Mall’ K-drama has a niece face the truth of her uncle’s sudden death

The spinoff K-drama will have a few differences and similarities to The Killer’s Shopping List. The Killer’s Shopping Mall K-drama will focus on a niece and uncle duo. The niece is raised by her uncle after the death of her parents. Her uncle runs a shopping mall. Everything is going well until the sudden death of her uncle. The niece is forced to face the truth about his death and the possibility of foul play. Fans will again get invested in a riveting murder mystery with hints of comedy.

The Killer’s Shopping Mall has some clear parallels to the 2022 K-drama with the implications of a local murder that needs solving. The overall character descriptions are somewhat similar. There is a family element as Dae-sung gets help from his mother to solve the murder, while The Killer’s Shopping Mall has the niece solve her uncle’s murder.

Kim Hye-joon inherits A Shop for Killers from Lee Dong-wook

by tccolb

A new poster and teaser have arrived for Disney+’s upcoming action A Shop for Killers, a secret business that our heroine Kim Hye-joon (Connect) comes to own, inheriting it from her shadowy uncle Lee Dong-wook (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) when he suddenly meets his death.

After she lost her parents, Jung Jin-man (Lee Dong-wook) had taken in his niece Jung Ji-ahn (Kim Hye-joon) and the trailer opens with a glimpse of their past, when the child Ji-ahn – played by Ahn Se-bin (Evilive) – had asked if Uncle will only be gone for a short while. Jin-man reassured her that he’d be back soon. But we quickly cut forward to the present, where the now adult Ji-ahn is faced with Jin-man’s funeral.

We then start to see suspicious people appearing in Ji-ahn’s vicinity, including an armed Seo Hyun-woo (Celebrity) and Geum Hae-na (Cannonball). In voiceover, we hear Jin-man’s advice to his niece: “Listen well, Jung Ji-ahn. Those who bark are the ones who are weak. If they were strong, they wouldn’t bark.” As Ji-ahn prepares for a fight, Uncle Jin-man continues to guide her through her training: “Open your eyes wider, the more scared you get, and look straight. You have to get stronger.”

Meeting with Park Ji-bin (Blind), Ji-ahn consults him on her current predicament, revealing the text message that she received from the bank. Someone deposited 70,000,000 KRW to her account and the total balance is now 18,753,000,000. Yowzers. Digging deeper, they then find that the business Ji-ahn now owns is a website that sells weapons.

It doesn’t take long for the danger meter to go haywire and we hear Jin-man’s final warning that, “Every decision comes with responsibility. I’ll leave the choice to you.” With the intermittent text screens, the teaser then closes on the deciding question to our heroine: “The dangerous inheritance that your uncle left, will you continue to run that shopping mall?”

Production for the action drama is being led by a team of three with PD Lee Kwon (Rescue Me 2) having a hand in writing and directing, working together with PD Noh Kyu-yub at the helm and co-writing the scripts with Ji Ho-jin. Disney+’s A Shop for Killers will be holding their grand opening on January 17.

'Killers' shopping mall' Lee Dong-wook's transformation... "From just an uncle to a suspicious shopping mall owner"

BBSIMAGE_20231227082657_6e6476f5058076bb

Lee Dong-wook predicted an unprecedented acting transformation in Disney+'s original series <Killers' Shopping Mall>, which will be released on January 17th next year.

<Killers’ Shopping Mall> is a stylish new wave action film that tells the story of the survival of the niece ‘Jian’ who becomes the target of suspicious killers due to the dangerous legacy left behind by his uncle ‘Jinman’. In this work, Lee Dong-wook plays the role of ‘Jeong Jin-man’, the only family member of his nephew ‘Jian’ (Kim Hye-jun) and a mysterious uncle who runs a suspicious shopping mall, and shows the most new acting transformation in his filmography.

The sight of him lying down as if everything bothers him or looking at his nephew with an indifferent expression is reminiscent of the uncles we commonly see around us, making us look forward to Lee Dong-wook's life acting. In addition, the sharp atmosphere and tense gun action, which are completely opposite to the tsundere uncle from appearance to eyes, are predicted, raising curiosity about the hidden story of 'Jin Man' and raising expectations that we will be able to see Lee Dong-wook's colorful charms.

BBSIMAGE_20231227082705_b47d1534fe4e64b3

Regarding the character 'Jin Man', Lee Dong-wook said, "I was attracted to the character because it was something I had never played before," and added, "This is a character who will make many people (who will see the work) wonder, 'What on earth is that person thinking?'" and said, It is said that the mysterious narrative and charm of ‘Jin Man’ will unfold in an interesting way. He continued, “For ‘Jin Man,’ his niece ‘Jian’ is a special person. He said, “I am the only blood relative left,” and “I think I need to develop the strength to protect myself, so I act very bluntly on the outside,” foreshadowing that he will show a special uncle-niece chemistry with Kim Hye-jun, who plays Jian.

He also shared his thoughts on filming, saying, “(In previous works) there were a lot of actions with fantasy elements, but in this work, the actions were more realistic and were used in actual combat, so it was new and fun.” Adds anticipation for the actions.

BBSIMAGE_20231227082718_fe8e121b64199008

Director Lee Kwon, who was in charge of directing this work, revealed the reason for casting Lee Dong-wook, saying, “It is a different image from the original ‘Jin Man’, but I thought it would be fresh.” He continued, “There was a close-up scene in the first filming, and I looked at the screen and thought, ‘It’s done. “I was convinced that Jeong Jin-man’s appearance was perfect,” he said, expressing his satisfaction and high praise for his ability to digest the character. In this way, Lee Dong-wook is expected to captivate subscribers by delicately depicting the character's three-dimensional emotions as well as spectacular action through <Killers' Shopping Mall>.
