"Chief Detective 1958" To Showcase Wild Team Investigation By A Quartet Of Detectives

MBC’s new drama “Chief Detective 1958” has unveiled more stills ahead of its premiere next week!

“Chief Detective 1958” will serve as a prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which ran for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and achieved an incredible peak of 70 percent ratings back in its heyday. The drama will follow the story of Park Young Han (Lee Je Hoon), a passionate detective who boasts the highest arrest rate when it comes to petty thieves, as he teams up with three charismatic colleagues to break the norms of corruption.

The newly released stills bring all four detectives from Jongnam Police Station together as they stand firm with determination on their faces. Especially, the stills offer a sneak peek of “rookie detectives” Cho Kyung Hwan (Choi Woo Sung) and Seo Ho Jeong (Yoon Hyun Soo), adding an extra layer of excitement to the anticipated duo of “veteran detectives” Park Young Han and Kim Sang Soon (Lee Dong Hwi).

In the new stills, Cho Kyung Hwan, a robust young man from a rice shop, holds a rice bag with one hand and exudes a sturdy and dignified presence, while Seo Ho Jeong, an elite student from a prestigious university, is seen in his go-to bookstore with a neat appearance and intellectual vibe. As they seem to have no resemblance and appear far from being typical detectives, curiosity arises regarding what kind of role they will play in Jongnam Police Station.

Regarding the drama, Choi Woo Sung briefly commented, “I was already familiar with the original ‘Chief Inspector’ series, and the fact that it’s not a reboot or spin-off but a prequel format appealed to me.” He also described the character’s charm, saying, “He looks strong and intimidating on the outside, but he is actually a warm and kind-hearted person. I aimed to portray Kyung Hwan’s immaturity and the dilemmas it brings.”

Yoon Hyun Soo, too, shared his excitement about taking part in the project by saying, “I remember preparing for the audition to my fullest. Perhaps it was because of that eagerness I was able to participate.” He further explained his character Ho Jeong, stating, “Although he makes mistakes out of too much enthusiasm, his sincerity toward his dream is admirable. I hope viewers will follow his journey as he transforms from a studious young man into a real detective.”

The first episode of “Chief Detective 1958” will air on April 19 at 9:50 p.m. KST.

Chief Detective 1958 released a highlight teaser.

Set in an era of chaos, Chief Detective 1958 tells the story of Detective Park Young Han, who, unable to see human dignity being trampled upon, joins forces with three colleagues to shatter the corrupt authority.

Chief Detective 1958 is a prequel to Chief Inspector. The K-drama takes place in 1958 when Detective Park Young Han was appointed to Seoul.

The teaser commences by showing the old Park Young Han (Choi Bool Am). He says, "The one who can beat a persistent person is even more persistent."

The scene then shifts to 1958, when Park Young Han (Lee Je Hoon) was a passionate young Detective catching criminals with his team, including Kim Sang Soon (Lee Dong Hwi), Cho Kyung Hwan (Choi Woo Sung), and Seo Ho Jeong (Yoon Hyun Soo).

From Kim Sang Soon disguising himself as a bank robber to Park Young Han breaking through among gangsters, the extraordinary teamwork of these detectives piques interest. Park Young Han determinedly says, "If we can't solve this case, a person's life might be ruined." However, in the face of external pressure of power and the harsh reality, even he can't help but feel frustrated.

When the team's guiding principle, "Let's ensure those who commit crimes are punished," which has never been violated, is shaken, even the stalwart Park Young Han begins to waver. He points a gun at a criminal without showing any shred of mercy but cries out of frustration at being unable to execute justice.

The teaser raises curiosity about the challenges Park Young Han and his team face, and how they will overcome them.

20240416232923_Choi-Bool-Am.jpg?s=900x60"Chief Detective 1958" Shares Sneak Peek Of Cameo By The Original "Chief Inspector" Choi Bool Am

Apr 16, 2024
by E Cha

BC’s upcoming drama “Chief Detective 1958” has revealed a glimpse of Choi Bool Am’s highly-anticipated cameo!

“Chief Detective 1958” is a brand-new prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which ran for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and achieved an incredible peak of 70 percent ratings back in its heyday. While the original show was set in the 1970s and 1980s (present day at the time), “Chief Detective 1958” will be set even earlier, in 1958.

Lee Je Hoon will be playing a younger version of the titular chief detective Park Young Han, who was played by Choi Bool Am in the original series.

The upcoming first episode of the drama will feature the return of a legend: Choi Bool Am will be making a special appearance in the premiere as an elderly version of Park Young Han, who is now old, experienced, and full of hard-earned wisdom.

Choi-Bool-Am.jpeg

Director Kim Sung Hoon described Choi Bool Am’s cameo as “inevitable,” explaining, “Because Choi Bool Am is essentially Detective Park Young Han of ‘Chief Inspector,’ I thought that an appearance by him was inevitable. By showing the elderly version of Park Young Han, who might seem ordinary on the outside, I wanted to say, ‘Okay, look carefully from now on. I’ll show you how extraordinary this seemingly ordinary person was.’ And to those who remember the original ‘Chief Inspector,’ I wanted to say, ‘Everyone, the true chief inspector is back.’”

As for his experience working with Choi Bool Am, the director recalled, “Although it was brief, he discussed each and every line of his dialogue with me, and he found meaning in each line. He also shared a lot of opinions about the costumes, props, and set, and he did his utmost in every single scene.”

“The focus and passion he showed on set really touched the hearts of many staff members,” Kim Sung Hoon continued. “I myself felt really proud and honored just to have been able to work with Choi Bool Am, even briefly.”

Actor Choi Woo Sung put extraordinary effort into transforming into the character of Cho Kyung Hwan. This actor's new look is expected to evoke nostalgia in viewers who enjoyed the classic 1971 drama Chief Inspector.

Premiere Watch: Chief Detective 1958

by missvictrix

03.36459373.1.jpg

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Action, mystery, drama, crime, human
Episode count: 10
Global streamer: Disney+

Reasons to watch: It feels like it’s been forever in the making, and hyped for even longer than that, but the remake of the long-running Chief Inspector series from the 1970s and 80s has finally met 2024. Except not really, since the drama takes us back in time to 1958, and will act as a prequel to the original series. Because there’s nothing quite like taking a dated, classic TV show and putting some fresh film-making and, you know, Lee Je-hoon in there. Joined by Lee Dong-hwi, Yoon Hyun-soo, and Choi Woo-sung, this drama promises us a bit of everything. And that’s exactly what I’m counting on. (If the fun they’re having at the press conference sets the tone, we’re in good shape.)

TL;DR: Lee Je-hoon is back serving more justice, this time in 1958 with his ragtag team of cops

As the drama 'Investigation Team Leader 1958' is about to be broadcast for the first time, attention is focused on the character relationships.

15483063_1294353_428_org.jpg

MBC's 'Investigation Team Leader 1958', which will be aired for the first time on the 19th, is set in 1958, an era of barbarism. Detective Park Young-han, who specializes in apprehending petty thieves, teams up with three unique colleagues to break down the absurdities of corrupt power with common sense and serve the people. This drama depicts the story of being reborn as a detective.

It will be broadcast as a follow-up to ‘Wonderful World’, which ended on the 13th.

It is a prequel to 'Investigation Chief', which aired from 1971 to 1989, and was directed by PD Kim Seong-hoon and written by Kim Young-shin. According to the character relationship chart released prior to the broadcast, various characters appear in addition to the main characters Park Young-han, Kim Sang-soon, Kyung-hwan Cho, and Seo Ho-jeong.

Park Young-han, played by actor Lee Je-hoon, is the character played by Choi Bul-am in the original work. In 'Investigation Team Leader 1958', he is a detective in the first investigation team of Jongnam Police Station, who has the highest rate of arresting petty thieves in Gyeonggi-do.

He is a steely old man and an impregnable hillbilly who absolutely believes in self-righteousness and benevolence and retribution. He is scary to the bad guys, but he is also everyone's big brother who embraces even the neighborhood orphans and beggars.

Lee Dong-hwi played the role of Kim Sang-soon. Kim Sang-soon is Jong Nam-seo's 'mad dog', a person who is crooked and cynical about everything.

Choi Woo-sung is a famous character from Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do, and plays Gyeong-hwan Cho, a lucky worker at a rice shop in Jongnam Market. Yoon Hyun-soo plays the role of Seo Ho-jeong, who grew up properly in a professor's family, but goes against his parents' wishes for the first time in his life to become a police officer. Seo Eun-soo is expected to give a passionate performance in the role of Lee Hye-joo, a foreigner who runs a bookstore called ‘Jongnam Seorim’. While interest is focused on how many episodes 'Investigation Team Leader 1958' will have, it was organized into 10 episodes. It airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 PM and can be watched on OTT through Wave and Disney Plus.

In a nostalgic nod to the golden era of Korean television, the upcoming MBC Friday-Saturday drama "Chief Detective 1958" has unveiled its first batch of OST artists, sparking excitement among music and drama enthusiasts alike. The announcement, made by the OST production company Blending through their official social media channels on April 12, has set the stage for what promises to be a captivating blend of past and present.

"Chief Detective 1958" serves as a prequel to the iconic drama "Chief Detective," which aired from 1971 to 1989 and starred Choi Bul Am. With a narrative set before the original series, it boasts the inclusion of actors Lee JeHoon and Lee DongHwi, whose involvement has already garnered significant attention. The original drama's memorable dialogues and theme music played a crucial role in its popularity, raising expectations for the new OST.

Leading the vocal charge in this much-anticipated lineup is BTOB's main vocalist and leader, Seo EunKwang. Known for his exceptional singing ability since his debut, EunKwang's participation raises the bar for the upcoming soundtrack. The titles of the pre-released tracks – "지피지기백전백승," "여전히 그댄," and "달빛" – hint at a diverse range of styles, sparking curiosity about how these songs will enhance the drama's immersion and emotional impact.

"Chief Detective 1958" is set to premiere on April 19, airing every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 PM KST on MBC. As this drama seeks to bridge the gap between two eras, the inclusion of modern music talents in its OST lineup not only pays homage to its storied past but also introduces a fresh layer of anticipation for what is poised to be a memorable auditory and visual experience. With such a dynamic blend of history and contemporary artistry, "Chief Detective 1958" is gearing up to be a must-watch, promising to deliver not just a trip down memory lane but also a showcase of today's musical prowess.
