It’s official: Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun will be starring together in a new romance drama!

On June 19, JTBC confirmed that the two actors would be playing the leads in its upcoming drama “Welcome to Samdalri” (literal title).

Helmed by “When the Camellia Blooms” director Cha Young Hoon, “Welcome to Samdalri” will star Ji Chang Wook as Jo Yong Pil, a man who has faithfully stayed in his hometown on Jeju Island all his life in order to protect its residents.

After losing his mother, who worked as a haenyeo (female diver that harvests sea life for a living), at a young age due to a mistaken weather report, Jo Yong Pil makes up his mind to become a weather forecaster and protect the elders of his hometown. However, his passion and refusal to let misinformation slide earns him a reputation at work as a stubborn troublemaker who isn’t afraid to argue with his boss.

Meanwhile, Shin Hye Sun will star as Jo Sam Dal, who grew up together with Jo Yong Pil as his close childhood friend. Unlike Jo Yong Pil, who was content to remain in his hometown of Samdalri, Jo Sam Dal made it her mission to get out of their small town and move to Seoul.

After years of toiling away as an assistant in the fashion photography industry, Jo Sam Dal—who changes her name to Jo Eun Hye in Seoul—finally succeeds and makes it to the top. However, when everything she’s worked so hard to build comes crashing down in the blink of an eye, she returns to Samdalri, where people still know her as Sam Dal and not Eun Hye.

Although Jo Yong Pil and Jo Sam Dal used to be joined at the hip when they were younger, these once inseparable friends are no longer in contact with one another due to an incident that drove them apart. But when Jo Sam Dal returns to Samdalri, they find that the longtime affection they once had for one another comes rushing back all too easily.

“Welcome to Samdalri” is currently scheduled to premiere in the second half of 2023.

Are you excited to see Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun in this new drama?

Welcome to Samdalri tells the story of Sam Dal, who, unlike Yong Pil, who has cherished the local stream, rises to success outside of the town only to lose everything and return home, seeking solace and healing. The drama revolves around individuals who remain fragile and immature even as adults, providing heartwarming moments and laughter.

Directed by Cha Young Hoon, known for When the Camellia Blooms and Forecasting Love and Weather, and written by Kwon Hye Joo, known for Go Back Couple and Hi Bye, Mama!, Welcome to Samdalri will be their first collaboration. Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun will take on the lead roles.

Ji Chang Wook was cast as Cho Yong Pil, a weather forecaster at the Jeju Island Meteorological Office. Cho Yong Pil is a notorious troublemaker who defies the headquarters' control. He constantly challenges the weather forecasts issued by the headquarters and engages in verbal disputes with the head of the meteorological office. Having lost his mother, a haenyeo (Jeju female diver), he nurtured the dream of becoming a forecaster. He passionately protects and loves Jeju Island, especially his precious "Samchun" (a term used to refer to adults in the Jeju dialect). He continues to excel as a weather forecaster despite being labeled a troublemaker.

Shin Hye Sun will bring life to the role of Cho Eun Hye or Cho Sam Dal. Growing up, Sam Dal dreamed of leaving the island as soon as possible, leading her to embark on a difficult assistant living in the fashion photography industry under the alias Cho Eun Hye, enduring hardships for eight years until she reached the top. However, her hard-earned success crumbles due to a certain incident. Eventually, she returns to the stream where she dreams of success and is still called "Sam Dal."

Yong Pil and Sam Dal, both born and raised in Samdalri, have always been inseparable, spending more time together than apart. However, they lost contact for several years due to an unknown incident. As Sam Dal returns to the hometown cherished by Yong Pil, the long-separated pair will embark on a heartwarming and exciting journey of rediscovering their deep affection and love.

The production team welcomes Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun to JTBC, stating that they anticipate the two actors, who exude bright and cheerful energy, will elevate the success of JTBC dramas in 2023 with their exceptional performances.

They further mentioned that Welcome to Samdalri is a drama where director Cha Young Hoon and writer Kwon Hye Joo's unique skills are concentrated. Amid a fast-paced world, the drama will encourage viewers to reflect on the value of their lost dreams, memories, and the countless connections that pass by fleetingly.

Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun Welcome us to Samdalri

by tccolb

Welcome_to_Samdalri-a00.jpg

With tvN’s See You in My 19th Life kicking off this past weekend, busy bee Shin Hye-sun confirmed casting for JTBC’s romance Welcome to Samdalri as her next project – acting opposite Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me).

As we can surmise by the title, the drama takes place in the beautiful Samdalri, a small town located on Jeju Island. Here resides our hero Jo Yong-pil (Ji Chang-wook), who works as a local weather forecaster. For his colleagues, Yong-pil is a PR nightmare – always arguing with head office directives and stubbornly sticking to what he believes is the accurate forecast of the day.

But Yong-pil’s passion stems from losing his mother to the sea during a diving accident caused by a weather report miscalculation. In order to prevent the same fate for his beloved townspeople, Yong-pil is determined to be the lookout and safeguard for his hometown.

Although Yong-pil always had a big heart for Samdalri, his once childhood bestie Jo Sam-dal (Shin Hye-sun) had always dreamed of leaving. As soon as she was old enough, she crossed the channel to live in the big city of Seoul, where she dropped her bumpkin name and became known as Jo Eun-hye instead.

Putting her nose to the grindstone, Sam-dal succeeded in gaining fame as a talented fashion photographer. But despite the years it took to build her career, all it took was one incident for everything to come crashing down. The story then sets off with Sam-dal returning to her family home to rest, where she is reunited with her estranged friend.

Directed by PD Cha Young-hoon (Forecasting Love and Weather, When the Camellia Blooms) with scripts penned by Kwon Hye-joo (Hi Bye, Mama!, Go Back Spouses), JTBC’s Welcome to Samdalri is slated to air in the weekend slot later this year.

In an interview with MBN, the actor shared the details about his upcoming drama, saying, "For now, Welcome to Samdalri is in the middle of filming, and I'm working diligently. I think I'll continue to do the same in the future to bring better works. In Welcome to Samdalri, I expect to show a completely different side of myself. It would be more feel-good and lively compared to The Worst of Evil.

"I like the title Welcome to Samdalri. Although I also like The Worst of Evil, I feel like the title is a bit too grandiose compared to the essence of our work. This is just my personal opinion. I [might] get scolded by the director [for saying this]."

20231102055257_Welcome-to-Samdalri.jpg?sWatch: Shin Hye Sun Struggles To Avoid Her Childhood Friend Ji Chang Wook In Upcoming Rom-Com Drama

Nov 2, 2023
by S. Kim

JTBC’s upcoming drama “Welcome to Samdalri” (literal title) has unveiled its first teaser!

Helmed by “When the Camellia Blooms” director Cha Young Hoon, “Welcome to Samdalri” will star Ji Chang Wook as Jo Yong Pil, a man who has faithfully stayed in his hometown on Jeju Island all his life in order to protect its residents. Shin Hye Sun will play Jo Sam Dal, who grew up together with Jo Yong Pil as his close childhood friend. Unlike Jo Yong Pil, who was content to remain in his hometown Samdal, Jo Sam Dal made it her mission to get out of their small town and move to Seoul.

The newly released teaser clip begins with the story of the Samdal residents who are excited by the news that Jo Sam Dal has returned to town. The more people are excited, the more embarrassed Sam Dal is. Since she was young, Sam Dal’s goal was to leave the small island and go to the big city of Seoul. Her return to Samdal suggests that something bad has happened to her, leaving her no choice but to return to her hometown. Due to this, Sam Dal says in an annoyed voice, “It’s a secret that I’m here,” while trying to avoid being seen by people.

There is another reason why Sam Dal wants to keep her return a secret—her longtime childhood friend Jo Yong Pil, whom she lost contact with a few years ago for an unknown reason. After hearing the news of Sam Dal’s return, Yong Pil desperately looks for Sam Dal, but Sam Dal tries her best to avoid Yong Pil by hiding behind a pile of trash.
