Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, “Serendipity’s Embrace” tells the story of young people finding true love and fulfilling their dreams after accidentally running into their first love from 10 years ago. Kim So Hyun stars as Lee Hong Joo, an animation producer who is afraid of love due to painful memories from her previous relationship—and who undergoes an unexpected change after running into Kang Hoo Young (Chae Jong Hyeop), who witnessed some of her lowest moments from her past.

Yun Ji On stars as Lee Hong Joo’s first love and ex-boyfriend Bang Joon Ho.

Serendipity’s Embrace: Episodes 3-4

“Success or love? That boring dilemma is back again,” one of our characters says this week, and truer words have never been said. Our male lead struggles with this dilemma and by mid-week, he seems to have made his choice. On the other hand, his first love’s first love struggles to come to terms with the choice he previously made, but there’s nothing much you can do to bring back a ship that has already sailed.

We learn an important fact about Hoo-young this week: when it comes to Hong-joo, he’s an “act first, ask questions later” person. Last week ended when he stepped in to help Hong-joo get rid of her ex-boyfriend, and only after the encounter does he think to ask who exactly the ex is. Hoo-young is shocked to hear that Mr. Ex is Bang Joon-ho a.k.a the author whose novel he helped Hong-joo to write a book recommendation for back in high school, and the soldier Hong-joo sneaked out of school to confess to. I mean, golden boy Hoo-young was supposed to go to Seoul National University for an interview for the International Math Olympiad, but this dude followed Hong-joo all the way to a military base outside of Seoul. She legit asked him why he was following her, and my boy replied, “I don’t know either.” Pfft. Such a loser in love behavior.

Uncle Wook freaks out when he realizes that Hoo-young’s first love is Hong-joo — and not Hye-ji — and that she’s the reason his nephew postponed going back to the U.S. by a week. “What if you end up liking her more?” Wook asks. Uncle doubts that Hoo-young can win Hong-joo’s heart, and it doesn’t help that he has been promoted at work and his mom — and the boss/founder of their company — wants him back at the head office immediately.

 

While Hoo-young stews in his dilemma of returning to the U.S. or staying in Korea and pursuing love, our clueless heroine and her equally clueless bestie carry on with their mis-matchmaking business. On one hand we have Hong-joo sailing the Hye-ji × Hoo-young ship paper boat, and on the other, we have Hye-ji trying to set Hong-joo up with her colleague, SOHN KYUNG-TAE (Hwang Sung-bin) — who likes Hye-ji. Sigh. “How come you haven’t changed in ten years?” Hoo-young asks Hong-joo during another of her matchmaking schemes, and she gets upset when he adds that she’s still clueless and stupid. That last part wasn’t necessary, though.

“Something” comes up at work, and Hong-joo leaves the scene for Hoo-young and Hye-ji to carry on with their date. But Hye-ji has finally picked up on the undercurrents between our leads, and she asks if Hoo-young likes Hong-joo. His expression tells her everything she needs to know, and she confirms that he has liked Hong-joo since high school. Hye-ji is not impressed when she learns that Hoo-young has no plans to stay in Korea. And as Hong-joo’s guardian, she doesn’t want doesn’t want her friend to get hurt again.

 

It’s finally time for Hoo-young to return to the U.S., and he just ups and jumps into the cab without saying goodbye to Hong-joo or his other friends. On his way to the airport, we get a flashback to their military base excursion, and it turns out that Hong-joo was not able to confess because Joon-ho had been transferred to a remote location and he was going to be unavailable for the next six months. Welp! Hong-joo was disappointed to the point of tears, and Hoo-young was not impressed because Hong-joo’s soldier crush should have sent her a letter if he was going to a place where visitation was not allowed. “What is with this punk?” he asked. But look in the mirror, Hoo-young, a similar punk is staring back at you.

In the present, Hye-ji calls Hoo-young to inform him that Hong-joo got into a car accident. Mr. Act First, Question Later turns his cab around, and it’s straight to the hospital. Hoo-young steps into the role of Hong-joo’s guardian, and he’s by her side when she wakes up. She assures him that it wasn’t a serious accident and that she’s fine, so he can leave. “Stop telling me to go. I’m not going anywhere,” Hoo-young retorts. Hong-joo is taken aback by the passionate outburst, and she tells him she doesn’t want to bother him over nothing. But Hoo-young takes her hand and puts it over his beating chest. “Do you still think it’s nothing?” He asks, and I part swooned, part guffawed at this.

Hoo-young’s concern — wrapped in a bouquet of charm and swoon — penetrates Hong-joo’s armor, and she suddenly finds herself in a state of hyper-awareness around him. “This is crazy,” she whispers to herself before telling him not to flirt with her. She reminds herself that her best friend likes Hoo-young, but it’s too late. Hye-ji has already disembarked from the delulu ship, and is now resolved to push Hong-joo onboard the true ship. Best friends over first loves!

 

To convince Hong-joo that she’s over Hoo-young, Hye-ji says that she’s dating Kyung-tae — and the man malfunctions for a second before seconding the motion like his life depends on it. His love life actually depends on it, but that’s a story for another day. That settled, Hye-ji leaves the nursing of the recently-discharged Hong-joo to Hoo-young, and the man smiles — like he has resolved to do every five minutes in this show — when he realizes the set-up going on.

As Hoo-young drives Hong-joo back home, we get another flashback to the military base excursion. They missed the last bus because she tripped and he paused to check on her instead of flagging the bus. Hoo-young ended up falling into a construction pit and swore never to get into anything with Hong-joo again. But guess who ensured that her photograph — that he stole from the picture board at school — did not get wet in the pit? Hong-joo jumped into the pit because she thought he was going to drown, and dumb and dumber spent the whole night down there until some soldiers found them the next morning.

In the present, Hong-joo laughs at memory, and mentions that she is only just recollecting it because she forgets bad memories easily. It’s a bad memory for her because the excursion was to see Joon-ho. But “that memory was about us,” Hoo-young counters, and Hong-joo’s hyper-awareness strikes again.

 

To ramp up the romance, Hong-joo begins to have racy dreams about Hoo-young — and almost carries out an exorcism on herself to cast out the lustful spirit. Hehe. But the Nile is her favorite body of water, so she chooses to push him away by downplaying the nature of their relationship. Hong-joo friend-of-a-friend zones Hoo-young, and he wonders how many times she can dump him before he even confesses. Co-ask! But Hoo-young is determined not to let go of her this time.

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Serendipity’s Embrace: I feel like I pretty much know what this story is and where it’s going, but despite that element of familiarity (one could say predictability), I’m drawn in for two reasons: the execution and the tropes. On the execution side, while I wouldn’t say it’s doing anything clever or new, the characters are endearing, the friendships are feel-good, and the dialogue zips along with funny banter and bickering. On the trope side, this just happens to be one of my catnip storylines: Guy falls first, girl is oblivious, and flashbacks provide a gradually intensifying reveal of the depth of his attachment. Plus, I do happen to love when the guy hides his soft underbelly with a gruffness that outwardly seems cold but is really just awkward. Admittedly Chae Jong-hyeop could be doing more to draw us in, because the acting is just okay although the setup is great, but I’m trying very hard to let that be enough. To offset that, Kim So-hyun’s happy-go-lucky and occasionally dumb character comes off mostly sweet — it’s giving School 2017 and I am not complaining. I’m very much enjoying the present-day, real-time friends-to-romance awakening and hoping the show can keep it up.

Serendipity’s Embrace: Episodes 5-6

It’s a chill week in serendipity’s corner, and we get confessions, confirmation of feelings, and a truckload of smiles. Our hero finally gets his lady love after ten years of longing, but how long can his happiness last when he hasn’t properly resolved the issue that drove them apart in the first place?

Our serendipitous love story resumes from last week’s dead fish kiss, and Hong-joo puts us out of our misery by pulling away. She tries to brush it off as a prank, but Hoo-young replies that it was never a prank. Not now, not ten years ago. “I liked you then, and I like you now.” Hoo-young has to remind Hong-joo to breathe after his confession, and she turns him down as she takes in air. “I didn’t like you then, and I don’t like you now. And I won’t ever like you,” she replies. Whoa! Slow down, sis. Hong-joo attempts to pull the “we’re friends” card, but Hoo-young reminds her that they’ve already kissed. It’s time to start thinking seriously about if they’re just friends and nothing else.

While Hoo-young is happy and relieved to have finally confessed, uncle Wook is worried that his nephew still hasn’t returned to the head office. Is he going to quit his job when there’s no guarantee that things will work out between him and Hong-joo? “What’s first love anyway that you’d risk everything for it?” Uncle asks — and he’s in a shitty mood because his first love and Hong-joo’s boss, BAE HYE-SOOK (Yoon Jung-hee), is driving him crazy with her choice of parking space outside their office building. Petty Hye-sook is holding a grudge because she was saving up to buy the building and Wook bought it first. Lol. Real estate waits for no one, ma’am.

 

Hong-joo begins to avoid Hoo-young after his confession. And in a flashback to their high school days, we see her at the bus stop excited to show him her newly filled — animation director — career form. But he’d left before she crossed the road, and she later found out that he emigrated to the States. Maybe his abrupt departure is why she’s hesitant to start anything with him. “I can be happy without a relationship,” Hong-joo declares — but not when she’s got meddling friends. Heh.

Sang-pil ropes Hong-joo into a beach trip with Hoo-young, and Wook and Hye-ji are also invited. Hye-ji has been looking to buy Kyung-taek a meal for going along with their fake relationship the other day, so she brings him along too. But on their way, Hye-ji learns that her dad has arranged for a blind date between Kyung-taek and her sister, and she’s disappointed because she has already started catching feelings for him. Awww. Hye-ji, part jokingly, part seriously asks Kyung-taek if he’d like to date her instead, and he malfunctions again — before denying having any such feelings for her. Mr. Robot, please!

 

Despite the rejection, Hye-ji intends to pursue her feelings for Kyung-taek, and Hong-joo asks if Hye-ji isn’t afraid of losing everything — the good relationship with him, the memories and even Kyung-taek himself. Of course Hye-ji is afraid, but she wants to try regardless. Hye-ji’s determination encourages Hong-joo to warm up to the idea of dating Hoo-young, but commitment is not an easy decision when she’s had major people in her life walk away: her mom, her aunt, and Joon-ho.

Hong-joo eventually decides to take a leap of faith, and she tells Hoo-young she doesn’t want him to go back to the U.S. “I’m not going,” he replies, and we get a proper kiss. Cue: Hong-joo and Hoo-young’s cheesy dating era, with pockets of cute awkwardness here and there. Hehe. When they return to Seoul, we learn that Hoo-young already sent his resignation to the head office, and he tells Wook not to mention this to Hong-joo yet. Hmmm. Isn’t it too early in the relationship to start keeping secrets? But I suppose Mr. Reckless in Love has a plan.

 

Hye-ji third-wheels Hong-joo and Hoo-young’s first date because Kyung-tae is sick and he can’t hang out with her. But Hoo-young did not wait ten years to reunite with his first love just so he can wait a second longer to hang out with her alone. He drives Hye-ji to Kyung-taek’s house to go be with her sick crush — and he’d relocate with Hong-joo to the moon no questions asked if it guaranteed alone time with her. It does, actually, but that’s not the point.

Hye-ji meets Kyung-tae’s mom who likes her immediately, and Mom is already printing wedding invitations in her head. But Kyung-tae firmly maintains that there’s nothing going on between him and Hye-ji, and this is Hye-ji’s last straw. Honestly, I’m not sure why the many denials when from all indications, Kyung-tae likes her. I don’t think I’ve seen a second lead couple serve more angst than the main leads, but here we are. And it’s just unnecessary in this case.

 

Anyway, back to our lead couple and their cute love, Hong-joo wants to know what Hoo-young likes about her, but he also doesn’t know. According to Hoo-young, when Hong-joo calls his name, his heart beats so fast it aches. He doesn’t know when it started, he just found himself waiting for her to call his name. That’s when he knew he liked her. “I really don’t know what I like about you or why I like you. You never gave me time to get used to you,” he says, and she replies that neither did he. The good news is, now they’ve got enough time to get used to each other. Or do they?

Like a wrecking ball, Hoo-young’s mom and boss, BAEK DO-SEON (Kim Jung-nan), arrives in Korea with one goal in mind: to take her son with her back to the States. It would seem that Hoo-young’s parents had issues before Mom took him abroad, and Mom has zero love for Seoul and everything it represents — Hong-joo included. But while Hoo-young has gone with his mom’s plans for him for most of his life, this time, he intends to start making his own decisions. Unfortunately, when two stubborn elephants fight, it’s the grass — in this case, uncle Wook — that suffers. Prayers up for Uncle, because he is going through a lot at this time.

Serendipity’s Embrace: I can’t decide if this drama is moving too slow or too fast. Parts of the story are boring and drag at a snail’s pace, but the actual romance feels like it’s progressing faster than our characters’ emotional development, especially since Hong-joo’s ex — and Hong-joo’s lingering feelings and trauma associated with her first love — is coming off like an unwanted third in their supposedly monogamous relationship. Meanwhile, Hoo-young is diving head first into this romance without checking to see how deep the water is because at any moment his mommy might show up to drag him back to the U.S. In short, I don’t find their romance (and the pacing thereof) all that appealing, but there isn’t anything else airing in the Monday-Tuesday slot so…*shrugs*

"Serendipity's Embrace" Stars Say Goodbye + Tease What To Look Forward In Final 2 Episodes

The stars of “Serendipity’s Embrace” have shared their thoughts ahead of the show’s final week!

Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, “Serendipity’s Embrace” is a tvN drama about young people finding true love and fulfilling their dreams after accidentally running into their first love from 10 years ago. With just two episodes left to go, the drama’s leads took a nostalgic look back at their experience filming the series—and they also hinted at what viewers should keep an eye on as the story winds to a close.

Kim So Hyun began by telling viewers, “Thank you so much for loving ‘Serendipity’s Embrace’ and feeling the butterflies together with us. I hope that it brought you even the slightest bit of healing while you watched.”

When asked to name the scene from the drama that stood out the most in her memory, Kim So Hyun replied, “The most memorable scene for me was when Hong Joo and Hoo Young were trapped in the pit.”

As for what viewers could look forward to in the final two episodes, the actress remarked, “Please stay with us until the very end to find out what kind of choice will be made by Hong Joo, who has a strong fear of the person she loves leaving her.” She added, “I think it’d be good to keep an eye on each character’s choices and growth.”

 

Chae Jong Hyeop summed up “Serendipity’s Embrace” as “a drama that draws you in quietly and naturally.”

“All of the scenes from the beginning to the very end of ‘Serendipity’s Embrace’ remain vivid in my memory, like ‘live photos,’” he continued. “I started out thinking that I wanted to make viewers’ hearts flutter and leave them with lingering emotions, and I hoped that they’d look back on past days and reminisce happily. I am infinitely grateful that many people watched and loved the drama so much.”

In terms of what viewers should keep an eye out for, Chae Jong Hyeop teased, “I think it’d be good to keep an eye on how Hong Joo and Hoo Young will continue their relationship, as well as how the emotions and relationships between the characters in the drama will be wrapped up.”

 

 

Meanwhile, Yun Ji On chose the scene where Kim Hye Ji (Dasom) warns his character Bang Joon Ho as the scene he found most memorable.

“I think it’s a scene that really showed the narcissism of the character, with Joon Ho not listening to anything he isn’t personally interested in,” he explained. “The character of Joon Ho is extremely different from my real-life personality, but I think I learned a lot from playing him.”

Regarding the final two episodes, the actor teased, “Please keep an eye on how the conflicts between the characters, which have grown as a result of Do Sun’s arrival, will unfold.”

Yun Ji On went on to add, “The love stories of the other characters will give you fuzzy feelings as well, so you can safely look forward to them.”

3 Emotional Scenes In Episodes 5-6 Of "Serendipity's Embrace" That Left Us Teary-Eyed

With just two episodes left, “Serendipity’s Embrace” is finally approaching its conclusion. While the last episode was filled with the heart-fluttering romance between Lee Hong Joo (Kim So Hyun) and Kang Hoo Young (Chae Jong Hyeop), the audience also got a deeper look into the main couple as well as Bang Joon Ho’s (Yun Ji On) struggles. Here are three emotional scenes from episodes five and six of “Serendipity’s Embrace” that left us teary-eyed.

Loss of Hong Joo’s teenage love

 

Hoo Young’s inability to confess his love for 10 years is something that most viewers found slightly frustrating. But in episodes five and six, we finally learn what actually prevented teenage Hoo Young from confessing his true feelings to Hong Joo. Spoiler alert: it was his mother.

Years ago, after the main leads spent time together in a ditch, they grew closer. The teenage Hoo Young, deeply in love, even buys all of Hong Joo’s favorite animated movies to gift her. But just as he is about to give them to her — and probably confess his crush — he receives a call from his mother, who informs him that they are moving to the States. When Hoo Young tries to reason with her, she bluntly tells him that she never reconsiders her decisions and ends the conversation.

What could have been a decade-long love is abruptly cut short simply because Hoo Young’s mother decided to move to another country for work. Moving for work is not unusual or evil. However, not allowing your almost-adult child the right to choose whether they even want to accompany you is entitled and toxic behavior — something some parents often consider their right. This flashback once again highlights the unhealthy nature of Hoo Young’s relationship with his mother.

The unchangeable love that changed

Hong Joo once told Joon Ho that the color of her love for him was black — something that couldn’t be changed by adding other colors. In last week’s episode, a drunken Joon Ho demands an answer from Hong Joo as to why her love had changed. How could something alter even the darkest shade? Unfortunately, it seems he forgot that the white color of loneliness, distance, and uncertainty has enough power to lighten even the darkest hues.

Based on a popular webtoon, “Serendipity’s Embrace” tells the story of young people finding true love and fulfilling their dreams after accidentally running into their first love from 10 years ago. Kim So Hyun stars as Lee Hong Joo, an animation producer who is afraid of love due to painful memories from her previous relationship—and who undergoes an unexpected change after running into Kang Hoo Young (Chae Jong Hyeop), who witnessed some of her lowest moments from her past.

In the previous episode, Lee Hong Joo and Kang Hoo Young confirmed their feelings for each other and started dating. However, their sweet moments were short-lived as various obstacles began to shake their relationship. Bang Joon Ho (Yun Ji On) confessed the reason he had no choice but to leave Lee Hong Joo in the past, and Hoo Young’s mother Baek Do Seon (Kim Jung Nan) warned that she would not return to the United States alone, hinting at an impending crisis in their romance.

 

Amidst this situation, the newly released stills capture a tense confrontation between Kang Hoo Young and Baek Do Seon.
