Jang Ki-yong returns to TV as realistic hero in 'The Atypical Family'

Actor Jang Ki-yong is returning to the small screen after a two-year hiatus to serve his mandatory military service, playing the lead in the new JTBC series, “The Atypical Family.”

The romance fantasy series, set to premiere on Saturday, follows a family of heroes who lost their supernatural powers due to their own distinct reasons. The family’s son and a single father, Bok Gwi-joo (Jang), has the ability to travel back in time, but after an incident, he suffers from depression and loses his power.

One day, a mysterious woman, Do Da-hae (Chun Woo-hee) comes into Bok and his family’s life, bringing changes to their powerless days.

“I felt a strong attraction when I read the script. The distinctive characteristics of each hero family member was interesting, and I felt a thrilling excitement that with this character of Bok Gwi-joo, I could pull off an unexpected type of acting,” Jang said during the press conference for the series, held at Stanford Hotel in Mapo District, Seoul, Thursday.

The actor shared his excitement for his comeback, adding that he took a different approach with this series than his previous works.

“My 20s have always been hectic. And for the first time, I’ve had a hiatus and I realized such time is needed. I didn’t have much peace of mind before. But with this series, I felt peacefulness for the first time when preparing for it,” he said.

“Because it’s my first work in almost three years, I’ve prepared a lot and wanted to do well. Personally, I’ve had a proud and fulfilling past eight months (while filming).”

Director Jo Hyun-tak, known for leading the smash-hit series “Sky Castle” (2018), helmed the new series.

The director noted that the series combines several genres with the irony of relatable stories from the fictional setting.

“The story begins as a family who completely lost their superpowers struggle to regain them. This process is both comical, poignant and desperate. It will encompass various genres,” he said.

“The series belongs to the realistic hero genre, where elements of reality and fantasy intersect continuously. I aimed to portray the fantasy storyline with a realistic touch and present the realistic aspects in a fictionalized manner.”

And such irony was what drew actor Chun to join the series. “I’ve been longing to do a story about family. In the script, there was this fantasy setting to an everyday story of a family. I liked this paradox,” she said.

“(The series) has a lot to show, while it’s a very practical story about people living in today’s society. (The viewers) will be able to relate and get comfort from the series.”

Chun also added the series offers a unique chemistry between the two lead actors.

“When Jang was cast for his role, a lot of people were surprised (to see us playing counterparts). It’s an unexpected combination,” she said.

“This was Jang’s first work in three years and I haven’t done much melodrama genre so we said ‘let’s rely on each other,’ and the chemistry went well.”

*** During the presscon, reflecting on his return to acting, Jang Ki Yong shared his enthusiasm for his first role post-service. “There was a strong pull toward this character. That’s why I chose Bok Gi Joo. There was a unique charm about the hero family, and the script was fun. I felt excited that I’ll be able to give performances even I can’t predict. Playing a father wasn’t easy, but I focused more on being Bok Gi Joo rather than just a father, which required a lot of thought and preparation. I read the script a lot, talked extensively with the director, and we had many rehearsals. It was challenging but fulfilling." Moreover, Jang Ki Yong expressed excitement about working with Chun Woo Hee, noting, “She was an actor I’d hoped to work with someday. Our on-screen romance has its sweet and sad moments but carries a poignant depth. We relied on each other a lot during filming, and the synergy was good; we had fun shooting.” The drama premiered on May 4th at 10:30 PM KST.

@backstreetboysfan  thanks for sharing this. I hope the drama's rating will increase as the story progresses. It does not waste a lot of time in bubbling the mystery though there are still a few plot lines left to be uncovered. It would be interesting to see whether the story will focus more on romance, fantasy or mental health. It's interesting.   :kaching1:

*** Jang Ki Yong gives life to Bok Gui Ju’s painful past, including the loss of his wife, which he portrays with lifeless eyes, an indifferent tone, and slumped movements in ‘The Atypical Family’.  He's showcasing a never-seen-before dark aura. He interacts tensely with his mother, coldly with his father, while deliberately saying hurtful things to his sister. However, Bok Gui Ju shows a softer side in front of his daughter, displaying hesitation even to knock on her room door. Jang Ki Yong’s portrayal shifts dramatically when recalling his past. His character smiles brightly during the happy times with his wife and when holding his newborn daughter.   :cutekitty:

Jang Ki Yong Makes An Unexpected Confession To Chun Woo Hee In "The Atypical Family"

Get ready to feel the butterflies during the next episode of JTBC’s “The Atypical Family”!

“The Atypical Family” is a new fantasy romance drama about a family that once had supernatural powers, but lost them after suffering from realistic modern-day problems. Jang Ki Yong stars as Bok Gwi Joo, who once had the ability to time-travel but lost his power after becoming depressed due to a devastating accident.

Spoilers

On the previous episode of “The Atypical Family,” Bok Gwi Joo miraculously regained his ability to travel back in time. Not only that, but while he had previously been unable to change the future—making it impossible for him to save anyone, no matter how much he wanted to—Bok Gwi Joo was inexplicably able to touch Do Da Hae and change her fate.

In newly released stills from the drama’s upcoming third episode, the dynamic between Bok Gwi Joo and Do Da Hae begins to take a romantic turn. After learning that Do Da Hae is the only person he can touch during a time-slip, Bok Gwi Joo becomes confused, and he winds up seeking her out at her place of work to make a desperate “confession.”

However, his courage only lasts a moment before he turns away and reverts to defeat and despair, with a dumbfounded Do Da Hae looking on as he falls apart.

Meanwhile, Bok Gwi Joo’s mother Bok Man Heum (Go Doo Shim) watches the entire scene unfold with an unreadable expression.

The seriousness of Bok Gwi Joo’s expression as he speaks to Do Da Hae piques curiosity as to what he might have to say to her—and what changes their relationship will undergo.
