IU takes a feeling, a slice of emotion, and gives it just enough context to be understandable and widely relatable. The core of the song is a distilled sentiment. It may be wrapped in post-World War II and post-Japanese colonial history. It may have trappings of MLSHR. But most of all, it is about an emotion-soaked moment. 

So, for me, "Through the Night" is a love song and a song about coming to terms with being separated from a loved one. The singer is not bitter; she sends hope and warmth to the one far away. She longs, but with a sense of happy expectation. What keeps them apart? Who knows? But she is not sad. She is fearful, but reasonably, humanly so.

In my own fantasy, IU wrote this song after her Taiwan concert and LJG's Taiwan fan meeting. After they clicked so amazingly well before their friends, their families, and their fans, work schedules (and trips to places like Hong Kong) probably pulled them apart a bit. I like to think that IU penned the song when she was thinking about this amazing person who had entered her life, who was momentarily out of reach, and whom she just couldn't wait to see, again. She might have had a hard time expressing how she felt, so she wrote her feelings in a cryptic poem and, rather than mailing or hand-delivering it to the intended recipient, she packaged it with other trimmings and sang it to him, instead.

The words are hers. The sentiment is hers. The song is a confession, IU-style.

it has been previously stated that the mv and song showcases the feelings of rereading a letter not sent after time has passed. I guess that's why we have short haired IU and long-haired IU by the end cause it signifies that time has passed.

Yikes ... Theory One... I guess it can be interpreted that way, BUT there's too much throw back to MLSHR in the MV especially with the hairpin, so ... don't think it's about Voldy. Personally I think she was inspired by the sad love story of Wang so and Hae soo, because JE usually gets her inspiration from books she reads or movies she watches (cmiiw).

@meeibe16 lol... but I got a feeling it might not be too far off from the real reason they broke up. Remember when she did the chorus for Seulong of 2AM?...I think it was rather similar, it's also about the guy breaking off with the girl (if I remember correctly??) But for this particular song, I'm leaning towards her being inspired by MLSHR, or, she could have been inspired by MLSHR back then when she wrote the chorus as well.

To be honest when I hear the lyrics, I don't know but it remind me the mysterious drawing she draw that we spotted. The reunite kiss, sosoo sleep, hand shadow and pegasus scene.. she drawing herself sleeping with short hair yawning and beside her was mysterious guy... did you guys remember this??

i think its good if she was inspired by the tragic love story. i mean MLSHR is one of the best kdrama right..

the theory one? i guess hes on the other side. its not wrong as interpretation can vary from what angle u see.

omg!!!! Boyz II Men's song with that lyrics (..throught the night) actually kept playing in my head before the MV was released!!    but now, I'm having "Your Song" (sang by Ewan Mcgregor) vibes to it,  aside from the SHR feels..

When see JG's Update, my focus run to the time when he posted it. It's exactly at 6:03 PM in Korean Time hahaha just 24 hours after the MV released. I also notice the Shakehands emoticon, Oppa do U want to congratulate her with indirectly way?  Kkkk

Let's stick with the mellow, gentle, and sweet impression chingu. Haha

Songs can deliver different interpretations, others might have seen it that way, and indeed we can just ignore it if we feel like it. I also felt a lump in my throat with the first theory. 

I just marveled over JE's song and worked hard on the YT views over the last 24 hours. Anyhow, the moment I saw the star in the beginning of the video, my heart screamed P-E-G-A-S-U-S! I guess my heart is very Moon Lovers specific! Haha...

As the song went on and she sang "it's that I love you" in the first verse, I cringed and remembered somebody out of MLSHR zone. That's how strong she has affected me that I was led to think about my own memories while listening to such a masterpiece.            

I hope we get answers or concrete hints for this song's inspiration straight from her in the future.
